Thirty Lashes [Tsubine/Kohaku]
Fri Aug 09, 2024 6:36 pm
"Stand up." Tsubine tapped the wooden sword he held against his thigh with growing impatience. The fact he had to tell Kohaku to stand was bad enough. Kohaku should have stood up without a second thought. "Lesson five—if you are not standing, you are dead. Stand up quickly and return to your feet." Tsubine repeated the same lesson he had given Kohaku dozens of times at this point.
Tsubine and Kohaku had been sparring for what felt like hours. The black compression shirt Tsubine wore was finally starting to get damp with sweat. Not through Kohaku pushing him, but through excessive repetition. Then again, that was what forged this place's meaning. The dojo underneath Tsubine's manor was a private one. Only those that were his personal guard, Kanna, or his rare student were allowed down here. It was a sacred place—a place whose wood pillars were marred with the marks of live blades missing their intended targets.
"Come at me again." Tsubine didn't raise his sword with his command. He stayed relaxed and as if stuck pacing. The training was for Kohaku's sake, not for Tsubine's. Kohaku was one of the few he saw real promise in, and he was grooming the young man to be part of his personal guard. In fact, Kohaku would likely have a more important role than even that if he could only get his temper in check. Maybe it could be beat out of him.

Kohaku Okumura
Kohaku had lost track of time. He was always extremely focused when getting the chance to train with Tsubine, but something was wrong… off. The fact was, they had been training for much, much longer than they normally did. Kohaku didn’t even notice. He was covered in sweat, his legs were weakened, and the grip on his wooden sword was proving loose and difficult to re-tighten. He’d do it though. Kohaku would not give up on a single training session, not in this place.
Using his energy to tighten his hands and soften the pain in his legs, Kohaku was back on his feet and ready to continue fighting. A deep breath and he was back in stance. “Yes, sir!” Kohaku ran forward to close the distance, swinging the wooden blade downward at an angle that would cut a real blade across his chest. And immediately after, he twisted and swung the blade horizontally toward Tsubine’s side. Each attack was accompanied by yells, the sounds of a dedicated student.

Tsubine liked Kohaku's spirit. That was what gave him hope for the kid. The yell. The charge. It was good form. But it wasn't something Tsubine was going to just let happen. The first strike was easily dodged with a side-step. Tsubine was ready to knock Kohaku down with an outstretched leg. He'd trip the kid and—a combination attack? By this time, Kohaku was normally only doing straightforward strikes.
Kohaku's attack came at a bad angle for Tsubine, so the timing was right. He barely blocked the strike with an awkward move that pushed him to move. ...Or at least that was likely Kohaku's goal. If he moved, he'd end up with bad footing. Instead of allowing himself to be forced back, Tsubine used his free hand to smack Kohaku's blade down. The resulting loss in momentum allowed Tsubine to reverse the grip on his sword.
An upward swing brought the sword to Kohaku's chin—forcing his mouth closed and sending him stumbling backwards. Tsubine effortlessly spun the sword back around to a normal position. He faced Kohaku, this time his own sword held to the side. "Again."

Kohaku Okumura
‘DAMN IT.’ Kohaku cursed himself a hundred times for messing up again. ‘This is why I shouldn’t try anything fancy.’ The strike to the underside of his chin was painful. He stumbled back and lost control of the reiryoku he had been using to keep himself moving. He dropped to the ground and was out of breath. If he kept this up, he wasn’t sure how long he would last, but… oh fucking well.
Kohaku was once again back on his feet, reiryoku surging through his body, giving him just enough strength to keep fighting. With another yell and the determination to finally land a strike on Tsubine, he run forward. This time, he swung his sword from a downward angle and up toward Tsubine’s waist, as if to bisect the man at an angle with a real blade. Luckily, this one wasn’t real, though, chances of hitting were very low for someone like Kohaku. Still, he tried and tried again.
He attempted another combination attack, so after that upward swing, Kohaku immediately brought the blade back down, aiming at Tsubine’s shoulder. Again, he kept going, yelling with each attempt. A slide of his foot off to Tsubine’s right, he continued yet another upward strike, all three attacks creating a large and awkward “Z” over their continuation. At this point, Kohaku was sweating, barely catching his breath, but he was r-ready… to mo-…ve… once… mo…re…
Kokahu’s vision suddenly blurred and he became dizzy. The young man stumbled forward until he lost his footing and landed in a soft thud on the dojo floor. “H-H-How long…” Kohaku asked through breaths. Sometimes, reminded Tsubine of the time was the only way for either of them to accept that they needed a break. Hopefully, it worked this time. Of course, it was never a guarantee…

Tsubine avoided the first strike. A simple step backwards helped with that. The second strike he expected and was able to block with his sword. And then... Kohaku surprised him again with a third, desperate attempt. Unfortunately, the kid was out of energy and was putting everything into it. There wasn't enough strength in the blow. It swung in a wobbly arc. Tsubine caught the sword mid-swing. He rammed the pommel of his sword into Kohaku's chest, pushing him back.
Before Tsubine could call for him to go again, Kohaku stumbled. Tsubine sighed. There was frustration with Kohaku not being where Tsubine thought he should be. There was frustration with himself over pushing the kid to collapsing again. He walked away from the collapsed figure of his student and grabbed a towel. He tossed it back at Kohaku so it landed beside his face. "We're done for today."
"Your strikes are telegraphed—you charge head-first and try to end it in one strike. This isn't Jigen-ryū, and you're not big enough or strong enough to do that." Tsubine wiped sweat from his neck and turned away from Kohaku. "Do more of what you did at the end there. The second strike and the third strike were good ideas." You just happened to be going up against me was left unsaid. Kohaku was good for his level. He just was nowhere near Tsubine's.

Kohaku Okumura
‘We’re done for today.’
Kohaku’s limbs just gave out under him. He collapsed onto the dojo floor, breathing heavy for a few moments before a towel landed by his head. He grabbed it and wiped sweat from his brow, taking a moment to rest before finally sitting up.
‘Telegraphed, huh…’ Kohaku knew he was pretty obvious with a sword. His skill actually lied more with spears. He focused on that when he discovered how his shikai worked. Still, he wanted to be more like his boss and teacher: a weapons expert, so he kept trying new ones. “Understood. I’ll do better,” he promised… again.
"So, who was that chick the other day?" Kohaku suddenly asked as he pushed himself back to his feet, legs shaky the entire time. He grabbed one of two bottles of water that they had brought with them and downed a large amount of his own. "You know, the one that went with you to Lady Shirazumi's grave." Kohaku was never allowed in there, so whoever this woman was irritated him. A bit of envy...

Tsubine trusted Kohaku's promise. It wasn't the first time he made the promise, and it wasn't the last time. The first time he had, Tsubine gave him an ultimatum: the moment you stop doing better, that's the moment you're out of here. It would have sounded like a threat—keep training or I won't teach you. In actuality, it was his way of saying that's when he'd have nothing more to teach Kohaku. They ended up effectively being the same, so he never corrected that thought.
Tsubine raised an eyebrow at the sudden curiosity as to who Kaminari was. Kohaku hadn't been around back then, nor was he part of Tsubine's entourage the day he and Kaminari reunited. "A friend. Not just to me, but to Kanna as well. She hadn't heard of Kanna's passing and, well, with a bit of a chance encounter, she wanted to pay respects." Tsubine thought for a moment. Why was he asking? Maybe... "You sweet on her or somethin', Kohaku?"

Kohaku Okumura
Ah, so the woman was an old friend. Funny, she was never mentioned before. Kohaku didn’t trust her… Of course, he didn’t trust anyone that suddenly appeared near the boss and his bra-… kid. His kid. Kohaku raised an eyebrow at Tsubine's question, though, and then snort-laughed at the thought.
“Oh yeah, definitely. She’s pretty damn plain, but she's definitely got a nice fuckin' ass,” Kohaku said with definite disrespect toward Kaminari. However, it was intentional. Kohaku was curious how much he'd defend the girl. The fact that Kaminari was allowed in with them pissed him off... So, how close were they?

"Language, kid." Tsubine chuckled, and then thought. "But you're not wrong, she does have a nice ass. Kanna was pretty envious of it." Tsubine drank some of his water, then he sat on an overturned punching bag. "If two women could make a kid, those two would have made a mankiller. ...Probably literally if the kid inherited any of their power."
Tsubine pointed the half-filled water bottle at Kohaku. "But no, tell me. What's got you interested in her? Only people you're interested in are those that get too cl..." Tsubine smiled widely—knowingly. "Kohaku, are you jealous?"

Kohaku Okumura
‘Yeah, but didn’t Kanna have the tits?’ Kohaku thought, but did not have the courage to ask. He kept that one to himself. “What? So, that chick was strong or something?” Kohaku asked, blinking at the implications of Kaminari and Kanna’s estrogen-ramped child. The mental image was something he definitely wanted to shake… or loved. He wasn’t sure, but large tits and ass were always a good time.
“WHAT?!” Kohaku retorted just a tad too instantly. “No, what th-…. Okay, you know what… I’ve been here for years, and not once have I been able to go in and pay my respects with you and the gremlin, but the moment this random bimbo,” Kohaku held his hands in front of his chest, squeezing the air to signify breasts, “…shows up, she gets an immediate invitation, so maybe I was a little pissed.”
"I mean..." Kohaku rubbed the back of his neck. "I get it now... She was a friend even before I was around, but she's been gone. Just kinda sucks... I guess..."
