Re: Restoring Order, The Aftermath [Byakuya, Yuuto, Unohana]
Mon Oct 21, 2024 10:42 pm
Yuuto’s response left much unanswered, prompting Byakuya to raise an eyebrow. Once again, his brief pause to carefully choose his words allowed Lady Unohana to speak first. It was surprising how aligned their thoughts were. They had discussed similar matters in the past, particularly the Gotei as a relic of Yamamoto’s era. Since then, Byakuya had been considering ways to move beyond that legacy, and Unohana’s remarks regarding Yuuto’s conviction echoed his own. Byakuya simply turned his gaze to Yuuto, awaiting a more definitive answer.

YUUTO HISAKAWA | STORMSWORD
The emphasis on that word, believe. It felt as if he were a child, being questioned by a parent. Yet, he would be remiss if he denied the truth. In all his time in the Stealth Force, he had fallen to the habit of telling half-truths, never committing fully. Or, perhaps that was merely an excuse. Nevertheless, it needed to stop. Yuuto took a moment before answering. He closed his eyes, took in a deep breath, before quietly exhaling as his eyes opened, turning to look at Unohana.
"I believe that power is meant to be put to use, and someone of my power is obligated to protect what others cannot. And I shall bloody my hands as much as I need, in order to ensure that happens."
There were still people who trusted him to do his best to make the world a better place. Even if the name changed, his job, that trust, the overarching goal of protecting the cosmic necessity that was the Soul Cycle, that wouldn't change.

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
This was an answer of youth. Of naivete. Even Byakuya had looked upon him with question before. Retsu had pierced the pustule of noncommittal with her interrogation. It definitely had more feeling now. Perhaps she had struck the right nerve. But that wasn't going to be the only nerve she was going to strike. She narrowed her eyes at Yuuto briefly. She had an opinion, but it needed something more. If this were a recipe, she still needed the eggs and butter. Yuuto's choice of flour was definitely a big part of this. But if the other ingredients were spoiled, then it didn't matter how good or spoiled that flour was. She did not break eye contact with Yuuto as her conversation shifted. "And what do you think of that answer, Byakuya Kuchiki?"

Byakuya sighed softly, a barely perceptible sign of disappointment at Yuuto’s answer. It lacked the decisiveness and understanding he had hoped for, yet there was still potential within it. He remained silent for a moment, weighing the response and its implications. It was the answer of someone young, whose hopes had yet to be destroyed by reality.
“It is a non-answer,” Byakuya finally spoke, his voice calm yet firm. "But, there is potential in his words." Byakuya's gaze moved to Yuuto, "But Yuuto, understand this: the cycle and its balance are paramount. Our duty is to preserve the Soul Cycle and ensure that balance is maintained. Above all else, that must remain our focus. Without it, there is nothing to protect." His gaze remained fixed on Yuuto, ensuring the weight of his words was understood. "The choices we make are not for the sake of power or tradition, but to protect that balance. If you can grasp the significance of this, there may be a path forward."

YUUTO HISAKAWA | STORMSWORD
His fingers tightened around his sword. Though no threats were said, the air in the room suddenly felt...heavier. As Unohana narrowed her eyes, he could feel a sense of tension rising. While she never took her eyes off him, his gaze moved to Byakuya as he spoke, eye twitching briefly. It was a non-answer, and he hated that he could recognize it. Yet, what he hated more was that he knew that Byakuya was right. The cycle, the balance, that all came before everything else.
He had spent so much time trying to justify a childish sentiment, despite the nature of his work. He wanted to protect people, to make them feel safe just from seeing him step onto the battlefield. Yet, with the existence of the cycle they were to keep in check, none of it mattered. Death, ultimately, mattered little. It was just a transitionary phase. From one life to the next, endlessly.
"Why is this the only way we can protect?"
His voice reflected his frustration. His fingers coiled even tighter around his Zanpakuto, trembling in idle silence, though he had no intention of unsheathing it. It was frustrating beyond belief. But, he couldn't deny it, no matter how much he wanted to -- or how much he had already tried in the past.
There was no place for a hero when this world, by nature, ruled against it.

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
"Why is this the only way we can protect?"
"Because it is simply the way the Gotei has succeeded in the past." Her answer was swift. Retsu crossed her hands before her waist. She would not be threatened by Yuuto gripping his Zanpakutō—if that was even his intention. "The moment the Gotei attempts to move into something more, that is the moment it has failed. Even if Kagayaku-no-Murasaki Gotei United's failure was not her fault, the fact remains that it did in fact fail."
"How many Captain-Commanders has the Gotei, in both the form of the Gotei Thirteen and the Gotei United, cycled through in past century? There was certainly a time where Captains were a revolving door—when only three of us had served longer than century. During that entire time, we were led by one person... and not one of us are Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto."
"There is no guarantee that the idea proposed today will succeed in the short term, let alone the long term. Instead of arguing over ideals and what should or should not be protected, what the three of us—and more, truthfully—should be doing is figuring out what is to be done about the situation at hand. " Retsu fully turned to Yuuto—her gaze bearing down at him. "Yuuto Hisakawa, you are young, but not so young as to need babysat nor a hand to guide you to an opinion. There will be sacrifices. There will be those we have to abandon to maintain the world. What I ask is not if you are ready to spill blood, but if are you willing and able to let blood be spilled and do nothing about it because it would not be your job to intervene."

YUUTO HISAKAWA | STORMSWORD
The frustration never seemed to end, nor did the inherent desire to deny, no matter the truth. The fact was, the Gotei United failed, and the root of it all, no matter how deep he thought about it, would always, inevitably, lead back to that they tried to go beyond their station. There was a reason why Yamamoto's Gotei had reigned uncontested for over two millennia, after all.
There was, however, the imperative, the priority -- figuring out what needed to be done right now. The Shinigami who shared the Gotei's values needed to see that there was still a place for them. The cycle needed to be corrected and maintained.
Yet, even in the mundanity of death and reincarnation: life always endured. While there was beauty in such a thing, it would not be his job. nor his role to try and go beyond what he had to do as a Shinigami. His fingers slowly released their grip on his sword, the hand coming to relax on the tsuba.
In the frustration, he only realized then that he hadn't inhaled. So, taking in a breath, the slightly narrowed eyes closed completely, and Yuuto quietly exhaled. As his eyes opened again, his gaze turned toward Unohana, one that burned with purpose and conviction. For once, he didn't try and make some long, flowery excuse. All that was needed was simply...
"I am."
No longer would he revel in denial. It wasn't something a Shinigami, much less a Captain should do. It was time for the "hero" to die, and time for the "Shinigami" to be born -- an irony that was not lost on him.

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
"You will be held to that, Yuuto Hisakawa." Retsu turned to Byakuya and closed her eyes briefly. "I need not ask you the same question. I still remember your face and words atop Sōkyoku Hill. If it is for the 'order' that you seek, you will sacrifice anything and anyone." These two statements were but facts and a reminder of who she was. It was a reminder to Yuuto that she was not the only one who could or would keep him to a higher standard. It was a reminder to Byakuya that she knew who he was. And it was a reminder to herself that she was the mentor to both of them in this sense. She was the wise hermit whose mountain of medicine had been her recluse's refuge.
She opened her eyes once more. She looked past the two of them and to the midday sky. It was not a sunny day. There was too much smoke for it to be anything but gloomy. If it were sunny, the dark circles under her eyes would be visible. She was tired of more than just fighting and healing. She was tired of seeing failure. She was tired of people trying to be Genryūsai Yamamoto. The moment one person felt they were him or could surpass him? That was the moment they lost their vision. No one person could. "I will provide my counsel so long as I do not feel as though I am being a custodian. The moment I am cleaning up after others' failures, that is when my aid will end." Retsu was going to let Byakuya take the lead on this. But that was just it. Let him. If Byakuya failed, she would no longer let him. That threat would linger with the weight of eight-thousand styles.

This was why both Unohana Retsu and Hisakawa Yuuto were essential to Byakuya’s endeavor. Retsu, ruthless and precise in every word, possessed the wisdom and experience necessary for such a task. Yuuto, though with a very different approach, was trustworthy, loyal, and unexpectedly charismatic for someone with his skill set. With the sudden shift in his life, he was prepared to take the next step. Whether respected or admired, each of them had the ability to draw in shinigami willing to follow them, himself included.
At last, they had agreed. Byakuya exhaled quietly, turning to face the aged desk. He picked up a file and silently opened it. With a stern gaze, he looked to them, "Then we begin."
