EXPANSIONS

Understanding of Power Minutia: Being someone who has gone through the process of developing powers multiple times, as well as just having a tremendously honed perception over the course of his life, Vanyel has attained a heightened understanding of how they work on a technical level. Primarily, this trait has been what allowed him to redevelop his old powers considerably quicker than most others would when creating them.

This is accomplished through extensive knowledge and memories relating to the flow of energy and its motions. However, while this does not allow him to simply bypass the mechanics of more technical powers, such as illusions or other mentally based powers, he is able to break down such a power to the fundamental technicalities for its function, such as identifying the condition and/or trigger required for activation.

Master Martial Artist: Vanyel’s life has always been one paved with martial prowess of all forms. Initially learning Taijiquan and Southern Dragon Kung-fu as a child, studying bladed weapons and firearms during his time in the yakuza and later in life, Vanyel’s skill and potential in the martial arts is unquestionably his greatest skill. This is something that has led him to develop and create his own styles, unarmed and with sword, drawing inspiration from various martial arts across the Living World, something that has also resulted in an immense amount of knowledge of all Living World martial arts.

Furthermore, this allows him to learn and understand weapons, martial arts, and individual technique at an otherworldly speed compared to most. For example, when viewing any martial art in the Living World, he could understand its technical fundamentals within a very short period of time, and be able to properly analyze and fully understand it within days, if not hours. As a result of this, there is seemingly no limit for his creativity, experimentation, inspiration, and potential.

  • Nán Liáoyá: Yíngwéi [南獠牙: 楹围, South Fang: Pillar Encirclement]: A derivative of his original Dragon Dance style, inspired by both the ceremony itself, as well as the basic component of baguazhang’s stance and movement training, circle-walking. The style uses a sword to enact movements intending on mimicking those of a dragon, coiling and uncoiling with flourishes to constantly be generating and keeping momentum and centripetal force. Akin to the parent style, it utilizes constant aggression to overwhelm an opponent, while remaining diligent with its footwork to keep up with evasive defense in circular motions.

  • Běi Liáoyá: Sānshí Shuǐ [北獠牙: 三十二水, North Fang: Thirty-Two Rivers]: Partially inspired by the sword forms of Taijiquan and its roots in fencing, as well as silk-reeling from its inspirations, this sword style was designed around swift and wide, as well as heavy swings to deflect, create space, or suddenly attack. The user’s footwork is in constant motion, shifting between steps to close the gap or avoid, as well as to create space, similarly to its swordwork. Due to its inspirations, there is also a notable adaptable flow to this constant movement, even while on the defensive, alternating between fast attacks and slow, methodical deflection.

  • Běi Zhuǎzi: Juǎnsī [北爪子: 卷絲, North Claw: Reeling Silk]: Heavily inspired by the silk-reeling motions of Chen-style Taijiquan, this style centers around the concept, utilizing the alternating fast and slow movements, basics striking practices and the overall basis of linear movement from Bājíquán, as well as deriving aspects from the footwork of his own Thirty-Two Rivers style.

Inarguably the style most open to adjustments and versatility, the general stance and footwork allow for easy addition and change from any style in the Living World. The slow movements of silk reeling especially are brief and difficult to predict, with immediate blasts of incredible power, adding into its unpredictability, and the simplicity of the modified technique allows for one to easily mix aspects of styles together, allowing for unique expressions of fa jin.

  • Nán Zhuǎzi: Qī Chūntiān Xiānshēng [南爪子: 七春天先聲 , South Claw: Seven Spring Heralds]: Inspired by the Plum Blossom form in advanced sets of Southern Dragon Kung-fu, it follows the base Dragon Style, though also mixes together the linearity of Bājíquán, the bodyguard style. To utilize both style’s preference for fast, precision striking, the user also enacts the zhenjiao, Bājíquán’s “charging step,'' to rapidly close distance.

Due to the linear inspirations, rather than actual movement with its footwork to promote evasion, the principle is instead practiced through upper body rotation via straight and zig-zag movements, emphasizing the idea to “ride the wind,” and force an enemy into action with its opening step, utilizing that to follow-up and react to punish their opponents.

I. Supporting Material

» Summary: While this is primarily meant to be an update/expansion to his natural skills to better reflect his overall character, this is something he has demonstrated in-thread, particularly his mastery over martial arts and ability to understand and break down powers. This is the main thread where it's been relevant in actively dissecting and understanding other people's powers. There have been others where he takes a more analytical approach to how powers work on a fundamental level, but not relevant to this trait specifically. It's one that I wanted to include from the beginning, but was unsure as to how to formulate and describe it.

In An Insidious Call, the main source for this is in his last post, where he takes a notable amount of time to think and break down Kurai's powers, figuring out how a power like that could theoretically function, before finally understanding what the activation requirement would be. Dawn's Disciples and Wax On, Wax Off both are threads where Vanyel assumes the role of a teacher, showing his intricate knowledge of separate martial arts with very distinct and different origins. He adapts to each scenario well, and is able to give sound advice to both students in order to let them understand the art better and grow as fighters.
