KAMINARI HATAKEYAMA
It came by no surprise to Kaminari that the citizens of the Rukongai were noticing the changes out here. When something has strong as the Gotei shifts, the rumbles roll along to anything it touches. Kaminari could only sigh after hearing that. She was hesitant to speak with a little girl holding the man’s hand.
Wait. Oh shit. Her? Kaminari blinked. She remembered having a conversation with a woman that seemed to recognize her. She wasn’t sure how well that conversation went at the time, but okay. Yeah, she had re-met Kei some time in the last year.
“Uh, no… No new memories, or old… None returning, I mean,” Kaminari said, sort of stumbling over her words. “I have heard of that Saionji family, though. So, you’re connected to them? I met Kei a while back. At some point, she and I did a photo shoot together? Obviously, I don’t remember too much of that, but I met her.”
"Ask me a question; I wanna talk too," Mayumi whined, pulling on her Dad's hand. "It's not fair that I get ignored just because I'm little. Treat me like a big girl!"

Tsubine was somewhat surprised. He didn't think they would have known one another—and definitely not in the way she said. He imagined the two of them doing a photoshoot and his face turned a little red. Thankfully Mayumi was a child and changed the subject for them. It got his mind off of racier thoughts. He smiled down at his daughter. "Of course, Mayu."
"Have you been learning anything exciting from your tutor? And where's that bokken I bought for you? J said you were taking it everywhere you went."

KAMINARI HATAKEYAMA
A little girl wanting attention from her Dad was the cutest thing. ‘ADORABLE.’ Kaminari couldn’t help but smile at Mayumi’s behavior. It was too damn cute.
"Oh, I left it at home for today cause we were coming to the graveyard. But anyways, it's all stupid cause it's math. No one needs math. I'm gonna be a Shinigami when I grow up, and all they do is fight monsters. If I'm not a Shinigami, I'm gonna be a baker. They don't need math either! Just flour and stuff..."
Kaminari was about to die after hearing that. Measuring is math little lady. But that brought up another question... Why did Tsubine need someone to escort his daughter? Where exactly was 'home' then? Questions to ask later.

Tsubine was glad that J hadn't confiscated it like he threatened. Tsubine said it was important for her to learn. J argued it was too big for her. Tomato-tomato. It'd work out. Hearing her talk about what did bring her joy. "Even bakers need math. How many cups of flower are you going to need for three-dozen cookies? And then what if only half of them want chocolate chip in them and the other want sugar cookies? You'll find yourself using math a lot more than you think. Remember what I said, being a big girl means you gotta do things you may not like. Math may be one of those things you may not like but have to do anyway."
The buildings gave way to trees, and the sky became muddled with leaves as they disappeared under the canopy. The trio (and escorts) soon arrived at the stone wall that gave way to the cemetery of irony. This was a place for the dead to revere their dead. "Just the three of us." The guards nodded and did not follow them in. One handed Tsubine a pail with a variety of items inside—including a bundle of brightly-colored hibiscus flowers.
The grave markers were old. These were not the gravestones of great people. These were not the gravestones of wealthy. Some were written in Hiragana—as that was the only way some residents could read. And tucked in a corner was a thin stone pillar with only two wooden plaques. The first plaque read "Kansuke Shirazumi" in Hiragana and had only a single year. The second read "Kanna Hanashiro-Shirazumi" with much more information. It had a date. Today's date, just seven years past.
Predicting the question from Kaminari, Tsubine explained. "Kansuke was my father. I don't know how he wrote his name, nor his birthday. I only know the year he died. When I finally made enough money, I bought this little marker to be the Shirazumi family grave. I found the only place not taken in this old graveyard and carried it here myself."

KAMINARI HATAKEYAMA
“I know, but that’s not math anymore; that’s measuring. Math has letters in it now, so it’s confusing.” With the strict tutoring that J had this child under, it was no surprise she was getting to higher level maths at this age. Most children didn’t get there until a couple years later. “What baker needs to find the area of a triangle using a stupid math formula? None of them. I can measure without it.”
Kaminari couldn't help but laugh after that one. "You know, she's got a pretty good point. Why is she doing advanced math so you- No, excuse me," Kaminari looked down to Mayumi. "Why are you doing advanced math so early?"
"Uncle J says I am advanced for my age and none of the other stuff was challenging me, so I needed to do something for older kids," Mayumi explained, a proud smirk on her face as she swung her arm that wasn't attached to Dad.
"Is Uncle J often that strict?" "Yes, always. He likes routines otherwise he gets stressed out, and when Uncle J gets stressed out, he comes out here to drink and challenge Daddy. Auntie Kei has to clean up after he comes home, and then is grumpy all day," "Oh, really? Challenge in what?" "I don't know. Drinking the adults soda, I guess. I have a feeling Daddy wins alot because Uncle J always comes home and can't walk right. It's funny until Auntie Kei finds out... Then it's scary."
It was toward the end of their conversation that they entered the canopy of trees and Kaminari noticed the shade. She looked around at the cemetery, something odd to find in the land of the dead, but she got the meaning of it. People lived lives here. In some ways, calling them “the dead” was just… wrong. They were people, but a little different and on a different part of the cycle of life.
They came to Kanna’s grave and Kaminari froze in place. She glanced over to the other grave, curious as to who this “Kansuke” was, but was more focused on Kanna herself. She read the plaque… ‘Seven years ago,’ Kaminari could feel that tightness in her chest, the bottom of her eyes wetting, but she blinked it away. ‘No, no…’ She was grateful when Tsubine spoke up and used it to calm her mind.
“I see…” she muttered and looked back to Kansuke’s marker. That was a rather loving thing to do. ‘A good Dad and a good son,’ Kaminari thought, even though Tsubine contradicted her before. Out of respect, she took a step back and let the two of them have their time with Kanna. While waiting, Kaminari couldn’t pull her eyes away from Kanna’s marker, and each moment was a fight to hold back the sadness, the fear, the regret… All of it welling within her. 'Kanna...'

Tsubine was proud of his daughter. She was smarter than he was at that age. Tsubine couldn't read when he was that young—he could count and read numbers, but that was it. Her being so advanced filled him with pride. More importantly, it brought a smile to his face. He let his daughter lead the conversation from then on. She was enjoying talking to Kaminari, so that was a plus in his book.
Tsubine thought about having Kaminari help with the traditional ritual they performed. Most families didn't do this except during the even-more-ironic obon period in mid-August. Tsubine did it twice a year; once on the anniversary of her death and then again during the obon festivities. However, Kaminari seemed to excuse herself from this. After filling the pail with water, Tsubine had Kaminari hold his jacket so she had something to do and got down to his knees. He gently but thoroughly scrubbed the stone clean.
Mayumi had helped before, and she was given the important tasks of setting out the offerings—a colorful arrangement of Kanna's favorite flowers, a dumpling from the restaurant they had their first date in, and a horribly-folded origami crane. Mayumi pulled out a wrapped chocolate-covered strawberry from her pocket. That was her own part of the offering. Tsubine lit the incense and he and Mayumi once again joined hands.
They said a prayer in unison, then went silent. Even if Mayumi didn't like being here, she had the routine memorized. The final part was silent. They individually said something to Kanna in silence. Once they finished, they bowed and Tsubine turned to Kaminari and took his jacket back. Without a word, he gestured for Kaminari to take her turn. If she didn't, he'd gesture again with intensity. When she finally did, he'd pull Mayumi back and take a respectful step or four back. Some things weren't meant for others to hear...

KAMINARI HATAKEYAMA
Kaminari excused herself because, even though she wanted to be hear, it was hard to consider herself part of the family. She didn’t remember much of them, and they had grown without her. She did the simple job of holding his jacket, which sort of helped the awkwardness of her presence. For a while, she dazed out, staring at Kanna’s name, trying to recall anything else that she could.
Kaminari stood in a respectful silence and let the father-daughter duo complete their ritual. She did not expect Tsubine to gesture for her to take her turn. With wide eyes, she stared at him for a few moments. As he stepped back, she looked to the shrine. She felt obligated to say something now. Stepping forward, she knelt down, but was still and silent for a while. Trying to figure out something to say only caused a few weirdly familiar, but strange flashes to her mind. Each flash filled with a different emotion, ranging from anger to joy. Kanna, her best friend, was dead.
Kaminari tried to hold it all back, but it was like hearing that horrible, devastating news for the first time. Her heart pounded, she couldn’t seem to catch her breath, the tightness in her chest as she did her best to not make any noise was making things worse. Kaminari felt all of this sadness, loss, and grief all at once, as memories of Kanna began to return in gray. The woman sobbed uncontrollably, falling forward onto both hands. She lifted one hand to use her sleeve to wipe away the tears. “I’m sorry,” she said to the two behind her. “I can’t stop it… I’m sorry.”

Tsubine was stuck. He didn't know what to do. This wasn't the first woman he'd consoled. But it was different. When he had to do that for Kanna, they were together and there was a certain bond between them that changed how things would happen. When he had to do that for the families of men who died in his service, it was different. When he had to do that for those who lost people due to wanton violence, it was different. A friend mourning the loss of their own friend?
Tsubine reached down to his pocket and removed the folded kerchief. It was there for fashion's sake, but he didn't wear anything that wasn't also functional. He knelt down and handed it to her. "There's nothing to be sorry for, Kaminari." Tsubine glanced back to Mayumi, thinking she might have some insight. Instead, she took it as her cue. The little girl walked up to Kaminari's other side and wrapped her tiny arms as far around the woman as possible. "It's okay. I miss Momma too."
"We all miss Kanna. She was a special woman who brought a lot of joy into this world." Tsubine couldn't bring himself to hug Kaminari like Mayumi was. It felt a little awkward for him to hug another woman at his late wife's grave. Instead, he patted her back. It was still the connection he felt was the right way to go about this without the intimacy of a hug.

KAMINARI HATAKEYAMA
Kaminari took the handkerchief and uselessly dabbed at her eyes, but the tears wouldn’t stop. Realizing it was pointless, she stopped and just herself sob. This was embarrassing. She shouldn’t be breaking down like this; she didn’t understand why it came on so suddenly, or so strong. She muttered another ‘I’m sorry’ before she felt two little arms wrap around her. There was a quiet gasp as she looked back to Mayumi. She raised her arm from in between herself and the child, and then wrapped it around Mayumi in a tight hug.
‘That… I remember…’ Kaminari sharply inhaled as her sobs slowed down.
‘If something happens to me, you better take care of my kid, just like I’d take care of yours.’
‘How is that not already a given? But nothing is happening to you, so no worries.’
“Yes, she was,” Kaminari was still crying, but it was calmer. She rubbed Mayumi’s back a little before taking a deep breath and calming her mind even further.
‘I’ve got her, Kanna… I’ve got them both…’
Kaminari kissed Mayumi’s forehead suddenly, which surprised the little girl. “You are going to grow up even more beautiful than your mother, which is kind of breaking a few rules,” Kaminari said, trying to lighten the mood and behave more playfully. Mayumi’s smile widened and she giggled at Kaminari, releasing the hug. “And is completely unfair to the rest of the girls in this world, but…” Kaminari cleared her throat. “She told me once that she wanted a green-eyed girl. Did you know that?” “Nuh’uh.” “You are literally her dream come true.”
