Psychological Analysis
When Lucia was a younger woman, she was filled with optimism and hope for the future. She made friends easily, and could always be found helping others in need. With a smile at all times, Lucia wanted little more than to do her best and better the lives of people around her. In some respects, she is still that sort of woman. She still goes out of her way to help people when she can, and she still believes very strongly that people have the right to live a better life. That very belief is what pushes her most central tenet in this world, what has defined her entire life for the past several years:That Quincy are fundamentally, ontologically evil.
Even with that in mind, however, Lucia does n't believe in moving directly to violence. She, after all, is a Quincy herself. Other Quincy, she believes, could surely be swayed to her side, and to simply accept a gradual extinction without bloodshed. But such an extinction, she holds, is an absolute moral necessity. Those who stand in the way of that are those whose deaths are not only acceptable, but must be seen through.
Beyond her moralizing, Lucia is a straightforward enough woman, bright but without much inclination toward academics. She certainly isn’t unwilling to learn advanced concepts if it’s for the sake of her ambitions, but she has no natural talent or desire for such a thing. Her hobbies are instead more quiet pursuits, gardening being her favorite. The cultivation of life in even such a small way always warms her heart, and it’s during those quiet moments that her smile returns in its most genuine way. She believes, one day, that she can enjoy a peaceful life, but she refuses to do so when she knows that she has the capacity to make the world better.
RELATIONSHIPS
○ Klein Schwarzwotan: He supplies her with soul-synthesized gold tools, and as payment, Lucia allows him to use her body and abilities for research. She is keenly aware of exactly what the man wants from her, and is not particularly willing to give it.
○ Safira Aldrovandi: Whatever this woman’s inclinations are, Lucia isn’t really concerned one way or another. She doesn’t see eye to eye with the serpentine hollow, nor does she particularly plan to. It’s simply a matter of finding someone else who’s willing to support the annihilation of the Quincy.
○ Calliope Schwarzmann: During the initial days of her time serving in World War 4, Lucia looked up to this woman for being someone else that preferred to avoid violence. She might have followed after her at the end of the war, in another life. But, instead, Calliope's willingness to cast aside ethics for the sake of victory were but one more reason Lucia eventually broke down.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Sunnyglade family, in spite of their bright-sounding name, has a long history of profound hate toward Hollowkind, and toward much of the spiritual world in general. This hatred is born, as that of many Quincy no doubt is, of the circumstances which led to the Quincy genocide. Having been forced to protect themselves from Hollows, which would consume their very being, they have grown to hate those Hollows; having seen Plus spirits grow to become Hollows in time, they have come to hate those spirits; and having seen the Shinigami wipe out the Quincy for the crime of self-defense, they have come to hate the Shinigami. It is because of this hate that the Sunnyglade family cultivated a family culture of ruthlessness toward spirits, and raised each and every one of its children to carry that same hate.
In that regard, only one child of the Sunnyglade lineage failed. Lucia Sunnyglade, a girl who was born without the temperament to feel such hate, always struggled to internalize the lessons her family taught. Her ability as a Quincy itself never had much issue; if anything, her bright-eyed optimism and willingness to persevere were more than enough to carry her through lessons that would have been difficult for most girls her age to grasp. It was not through some natural intuition that she accomplished this, but simple pluck, a grit that one would be hard pressed to replicate through teaching. When it came to the mentality of the Sunnyglade house, however, she could not match it. She would willingly kill Hollows when instructed to by her father, certainly, but she would rarely do so without prodding. Were it not for her skill in the Quincy arts, she would have likely been considered a simple failure of a Quincy and let to live a civilian life, but her potential was far too great to be ignored. So, instead, she was continually brought to the field. Pushed to her limits, made to ignore those feelings of doubt whenever she took a life.
When World War 4 began, and word of the Vandenreich’s growth made its way to the United States, Lucia’s family spurned the organization’s message, but nevertheless worked with them, if only for the sake of mutual aims. The collaboration of the Vandenreich inspired Lucia during her service with them; she admired their willingness to work with whoever saw eye to eye with them, their ambitious worldview where all those who lived on Earth, regardless of origin, could share in one goal.
But working alongside them only proved to bring her doubts far more to mind. When she was asked to hold back, when shinigami and humans were asked to do more on the battlefield so that spirits could pass on peacefully, Lucia’s mind wandered, but even in spite of this doubt, she continued to serve. Her steigen was more than sufficient to carry her between battlefronts, to bring supplies effortlessly where they needed to be. Lucia took countless lives over the course of the war; by all accounts, she did her family tremendously proud. Had she fought on more storied and famed fronts, she might have been one of the most famous warriors from the conflict. Instead, however, she simply left a trail of corpses miles long in her wake. Demons fell by her spellcraft as easily as breathing; even the terrain seemed scarred where she traveled. Gebet allowed her no shortage of protection for her allies, yet she found herself comparing her own abilities, her time on the battlefield, to those other members of the Vandenreich, the non-Quincy who had been allowed to join despite their nature.
Not because she considered them inferior, but rather, quite the opposite. What good was her technique, when it obliterated a life so totally? Such a thought was the beginning of a vicious downward spiral, for every kill she had ever made echoed through her mind constantly. The weight of ending a soul’s very existence, when the cycle of reincarnation allowed one to find new life and new hope after death, was crushing. The nature of the Quincy, she came to accept, was an evil unlike any other. And so, when Lucia came home to her family, and saw evil in front of her, she simply cut it down. If her power was evil, then she would at least use it for the only good that it could possibly serve; to erase that very same evil from the world.
Where before Lucia had trained diligently for the sake of maintaining her family’s expectations, she now trained with a profoundly different aim in mind. She had seen exactly the scope of her kind during World War 4, and so she knew how arduous a road it would be to surpass them. Even so, she didn’t hesitate. She couldn’t, if she wanted to atone for her existence, and so she sought to train harder than ever possible. She traveled to the furthest reaches of the north, well within the Arctic Circle, and honed her body and her technique. With so little life, the spiritual density of the place was relatively low, and she wore the sanrei glove at all times in order to cultivate her strength further. She lived off the land, and for 3 years, she saw not a single other life, simply training without pause.
The time came, however, that Lucia felt herself plateau. She could go no further by simply isolating herself, but she would not ever dare to throw herself to the wolves and begin her cleansing. The Gotei was out of the question, she found; they had grown too willing to allow the Quincy to remain. If only they were inclined toward another genocide, she might well have gone to them. Instead, she brought herself to the single battlefield which she knew would lack any love for her kind, and went from the ice of the Arctic Circle to the beaches of South America. She certainly had no special love for the intrinsic negativity of Hollowkind, but even in them, souls continued their existence.
She didn't seek to simply serve. Lucia was a woman of absolute ambition. But she sought out the Arrancar of that place to help her improve, and assured them they would have her support in any endeavor that allowed her to purge Quincy from the world.
EQUIPMENT
○ Soul-Synthesized Gold Tools: While Lucia uses all of the typical tools of a Quincy, hers are all crafted from soul-synthesized gold, rather than soul-synthesized silver. This material, provided by Klein Schwarzwotan, is functionally the same in nature, but is created by Hollow means rather than Quincy. As such, the vast majority of Lucia’s spiritual exertions carry with them that same Hollow taint. These tools include a visor which allows her to utilize reikaku at significantly further ranges than her typical usage would allow, countless ginto and seele schneider, and two more specialized tools detailed below.
○ Artificial Arm: Rather than removing her sanrei glove, Lucia has bypassed the loss of power that would come with its removal by simply cutting off her own arm. It has been replaced by an artificial limb crafted from soul-synthesized gold, which functions no differently in her everyday life than a natural limb. Naturally, the limb is a bit tougher than flesh, but she is currently intent on turning it into a replacement Quincy Cross, though this endeavor has yet to find success. Because of the hollow nature of soul-synthesized gold, Lucia’s spiritual exertions take on a blood red tone, rather than the typical blue of the Quincy.
○ Chrysaor: A weapon made from soul-synthesized gold, this sword is capable of serving as a reusable catalyst for multiple unique Gebet, simply by a swift infusion of reishi into the blade. More important for Lucia’s purposes, however, is the fact that the blade can just as easily be used as a completely mundane weapon, free of Quincy ability. As such, it is her only method of killing which aligns with her ethical principles, and it could be said that this is a weapon of execution more than combat.
POWERS AND ABILITIES
○ Experimental Testbed: Lucia’s body has been adjusted and enhanced in multiple ways, to ensure she has the capacity to accomplish her goals. Her body, already honed to the apex of what would be possible through mundane means, has been further reinforced by means both spiritual and physical. Because of this combination of prior training and artificial fine-tuning, Lucia is well above even the average seasoned Quincy veteran when it comes to her physical capabilities. After all, if she cannot outclass them, she can never hope to purge them from the world.
○ Gebet: Having forgone use of her spirit weapon, Lucia’s understanding of Gebet is extensive. Her usage of tools made from soul-synthesized gold as catalysts, as opposed to the typical soul-synthesized silver, gives her an additional degree of versatility, as the infusion of Hollow energy allows her to modify these spells in ways that would likely not be possible otherwise.
-Grade I:
- Priamond: A relatively straightforward offensive spell, Priamond is a spell which uses Chrysaor as a catalyst, though in truth, Lucia could certainly cast it through a seele schneider, or indeed without any tools at all. Priamond takes the form of a simple arc of reishi, which shoots forward toward a foe and cuts as any similar basic offensive spell might.
- Incantation:
- "With equal arms and equal worth, I am forward set."
-Grade II:
- Mordant: A spell which can utilize either Chrysaor or a thrown seele schneider as its catalyst, Mordant is designed to inflict a burning, acidic wound. By replicating the acidic nature of Hollows, albeit to a lesser degree, the point of contact will begin to degrade slowly, burning away at the body of the victim over time. This is no different than any other attack of an acidic nature, however, and any sufficient spiritual exertion is enough to at least bring an end to further burns.
- Incantation:
- "From tragedy we learn pity,
And to abstain from venomous pleasures."
- Diamond: A spell designed to follow any casting of Priamond, Diamond is dangerous primarily because of the frequency with which Lucia already utilizes Priamond. After casting Priamond, Lucia needs only speak the first line of Diamond’s incantation, at which point the initial Priamond splits itself into smaller shards mid-flight. These shards can hover in midair for several posts, and upon speaking the second line, they will converge on Lucia’s intended target. This does mean that Lucia may set up multiple castings of Diamond without completing the spell, and upon speaking the second line of its incantation, all castings will simultaneously complete.
- Incantation:
- "The dreadful stroke arrives in its place,
And brings an end to even constant strife."
-Grade III:
- Furor: Upon casting this spell, bright red chains that glow like sunlight immediately burst from the Lucia’s back, though rather than seeking out an opponent, they instead wrap themselves around her own body. These chains can be manipulated to move her body however Lucia sees fit, regardless of her state of well-being, so long as she can still maintain the spell. Put simply, it is the Sunnyglade family variant of Ransotengai, and otherwise lacks any notable traits.
- Incantation:
- "The noble heart holds virtuous thought,
And fights unceasingly, day and night.
This tormentous passion is the duty of a warrior,
Which achieves might through the highest honor."
- Triamond: A spell which builds upon Diamond, this spell relies on an incomplete casting of Diamond. After having spoken the first line of Diamond’s incantation, Lucia may instead utilize the shards of Diamond for this spell. By speaking the full incantation for Triamond, all of the shards previously created will connect themselves by way of a web of reishi, turning into a sort of net. This net, on contact, is no different from other spiritual attacks by Lucia, and soon after completion the net will rapidly contract inward toward its central point. Lucia may, at any time, disperse the net, but she cannot disperse only parts of it. As such, if she is caught within the net, she too will be struck by it.
- Incantation:
- "Filled with doubled life and doubled grief,
Which feel as if steel has spilled my heartblood,
I abandon my sanctuary, and leap into the empty battlefield."
-Grade IV:
- Redcrosse: Making a short sign of the cross over her chest, Lucia then throws a set of 5 seele schneider into the air above her. Reishi quickly shoots from Lucia’s shoulders and ties itself to the seele schneider, creating a burning red cloak that flows around her with no impact on her maneuverability. This cloak pulls reishi toward itself with an extreme intensity, enough that it can often be akin to an aura of flame around spiritual beings. However, this energy is not used for Lucia’s own abilities. The cloak may be destroyed by targeting the 5 seele schneider which make up its tail, though naturally, one would need to be able to keep up with Lucia in combat to do so.
The true purpose of this spell, however, is only unveiled after it has been active for a duration of 3 posts total. Upon reaching 3 posts, the cloak ceases to draw in any further reishi, though it can now be weaponized by way of slashing with the charged seele schneider that line its edge. Instead, should Lucia choose to do so, she may destroy the cloak, and in doing so, reishi will pour into her body at an extreme speed. This influx of energy serves as a temporary staunching of even the most grievous wounds, and allows Lucia to function as if any previous injuries in the thread have been healed. This is only with regard to her actual health, however; the pain of the wound is still decidedly present.- Incantation:
- "Upon my chest, this bloody icon sits.
The memory of life extinguished,
For whose sake I bear this grudge.
To love beyond life, to love beyond death,
Their highest hopes lie upon my shield.
Good and right in deed and word,
Free of dread, yet filled with solemnity."
- Acrasia: A spell created for the purpose of binding spiritual creatures, this profane ritual is only possible on account of Lucia’s willing use of Hollow-infected energy. This ritual demands application of 6 seele schneider made from soul-synthesized gold, each of which must be accompanied by a recitation of one line in the incantation. This application is, in effect, impalement, though the modest and disposable nature of the seele schneider means that it need not actually pierce the opponent’s flesh, or even remain in place if impalement is achieved. So long as the seele schneider has made contact with the target and their spiritual energy, it is considered “applied,” leaving a blood read X-mark at the point of contact. Sufficient spiritual exertion can remove these applications, however; they have no particular impact on the target until the full ritual is complete.
Upon the ritual’s completion, 3 lines of red spiritual energy pierce through the target’s chest, though no actual injury is caused by their appearance. These lines manifest briefly in the form of an X-Y-Z matrix, with their meeting point being directly within the target’s heart. This binding combines the natural energy absorption of the Quincy with the acidic nature of Hollows; in effect, one’s spiritual exertions are burned away so long as this seal is in place. This seal is tremendously powerful, and is even powered by the target’s own reiryoku. Though tremendously difficult to place upon the target because of its elaborate setup, it is even more difficult for the victim to escape this seal if it is put in place, and it will last until Lucia herself undoes the ritual. Because of this, it is Lucia’s preferred method of incapacitating opponents that she intends to leave alive.
(Note: While this is technically something Lucia could accomplish in a fight, due to its complex nature, it’s intended primarily as something she can do to people she’s already defeated for narrative purposes.)- Incantation:
- "In bliss, in pleasure, in delight,
One intoxicates a lover to madness,
And with words of flower and silk,
They are put to uses most vile.
Thus I, too, am now beguiled,
For I am flesh, and frailty there is bred."
○ Blut: Though not as extensively developed as her Gebet, Lucia’s Blut is nevertheless impressive, as she has worked extensively to make up for any apparent “weakness” in her own capabilities even at the cost of her own well-being. Her efforts to develop her Blut have left her body visibly scarred, scorch marks caused simply by the effects of such intensive reishi burning her from the inside. When actually utilizing her Blut, these scars become wildly more pronounced, darkening intensely and looking as if her body has been freshly burned.
While she is perfectly capable of utilizing either form of Blut with no difficulty, Lucia has focused overwhelmingly on the development of her Blut Vene over Blut Arterie. Lucia’s Blut Vene, in particular, is not only meant to protect her, but to create a damning trap for those who crack her defenses. When Lucia’s Blut Vene is broken through, the reishi reinforcing her body does not simply restructure itself; rather, the reishi aggressively shatters itself outward, intent on striking back at the source of the damage. This, naturally, exacerbates whatever wound caused this reaction in the first place, but Lucia is unconcerned with such self-destructive methods.
In much the same way that her Blut Vene is self-destructive in nature, so too is her Blut Arterie, but in a much more straightforward manner. While Blut operates by moving reishi through one's cardiovascular system, Lucia's Blue Arterie is capable of pushing these principles to their most extreme, flooding every blood vessel, no matter how great or how small, with extreme amounts of reishi. This form of Blut allows Lucia to physically empower herself by an additional 100%, a fairly large boon by most metrics. However, utilizing her Blut Arterie in this way can only be done for a single post without drawback; any additional posts will lead to Lucia's Durability being dropped by a single rank per post beyond the first, lasting for the remainder of the thread.
○ Steigen: Lucia’s steigen, while perfectly well-developed in its fundamentals, is ultimately lacking in what one would call significant finesse or individuality. She is capable of utilizing it in battle without any risk of disorienting herself, but it is ultimately nothing more than a way to move for her.
SPIRIT WEAPON
○ Name: Britomart
○ Appearance: While she is not capable of manifesting her spirit weapon at this time, it at one point took the form of a very typical, if exceptionally large, bow. It is unknown what form the weapon would take if manifested through her artificial arm as the Cross.
○ Abilities: N/A
VOLLSTANDIG
○ Vollstandig Name: Gloriana
○ Vollstandig Appearance: In Lucia's vollstandig, the reishi that she absorbs makes it more visibly apparent how scarred she has become in her attempts to "correct" her existence. Countless efforts to adjust her powers, to remove them from herself entirely, manifest in myriad scorch marks that run across her body. A swarm of blood red butterflies swarm around her in this release, tending to cluster near her body simply for convenience's sake.
○ Vollstandig Abilities: When Gloriana is released, Lucia's upper capacity for reishi absorption is functionally removed; it is vital to note, however, that this does not increase the amount of reishi she can actually channel through herself, or her techniques, at any one time. Surplus energy she absorbs is simply siphoned off into the form of blood red butterflies. Because of this, it can be said that Lucia’s very presence in any area will, with enough time, eventually turn it into an area void of any ambient reishi. In spiritually rich areas, it is highly unlikely that such a thing would ever practically occur, but instead one might find the area flooded by so many butterflies that even seeing one's hand could be difficult. Utilization of sklaverei, similarly, can further create these butterflies.
Each of these butterflies, as an extension of this release, are capable of supplementing Lucia's capabilities in a multitude of ways. She may destroy the butterflies at her whim to power abilities, functioning as an external reservoir of reishi which remains fully under her command as an extension of her vollstandig. This need not pull the butterflies toward herself, however; because of the Vollstandig's nature as a spell itself, the destruction of these butterflies can act as the catalyst for any of Lucia's gebet, and those gebet can be activated from the location of the destroyed butterfly in question.
Wounds inflicted by Lucia’s gebet while in this release, on account of its nature, will not simply fester; the butterflies which make up much of its form will instead begin to form from the injury. A simple spiritual exertion is typically enough to remove the butterflies before they can fully mature, and such a thing is highly advised. Should the butterflies be given time to mature, which requires two posts, they will split away from the injury that created them, siphoning a small measure of the opponent’s own reiryoku and bringing it into the pool Lucia has access to by way of using Gloriana.
Finally, and perhaps most horrifyingly of all, is what Lucia may do to her own body in this release. While within Gloriana, Lucia can, if she so wishes, construct a copy of her body by condensation of a massive amount of butterflies, a near-instant effect simply accomplished by forcing the amount of reishi into a profoundly dense space. Due to the amount required, it is not likely that she would have any further reishi to utilize after such a technique; it would require her to functionally start from scratch, unreleased and without much ambient reishi to pull from. Nevertheless, this copy of herself is not simply a clone to be utilized in battle. It is, rather, a proper recreation of her own body. In the event that Lucia has suffered a lethal wound, or cannot find medical attention in time, she may put her own soul into the form of one of Gloriana’s butterflies, and move it into the new body, a feat that requires a single post of focused effort to achieve. Naturally, destroying this butterfly would simply kill Lucia, and so she does not utilize this technique in combat except for in the gravest of circumstances, particularly as it leaves her with little in the way of further combat efficiency for several days afterward, requiring replacement of many of her implants and the prosthetic arm she utilizes. It is, rather, utilized after fights which required her to treat her well-being as inconsequential.
