MAKOTO | VOICE OF THE SWORD

Dutiful was the word to describe Makoto, always diligently working. She was never late to submit work, she never missed training and everything flowed like clockwork around her. Rumours were that she focused too much on work and was distant. She deprived herself of pleasure, free time was just more time to work. It doesn't take long at all for people to start comparing someone like that to another person of similar character.

Seated Officer Arima was like the Captain Commander. Makoto pretended not to listen to the rumours, it bothered her to be compared to a woman she respected so much. The stories of her feat against the former Espada with Shunsui, yet her own level of power was comparable and even more respectible. Inspirational even. It was not because of that though that she imitated Abalia or acted in such a way people spoke rumours like that.

It was just different circumstances that happened to produce a product like that. So she resumed her training, fists striking the dummy while practicing her hakuda.

ABALIA KYORAKU-HAYDEN

It was quite rare that Abalia found herself in the training facilities for the Gotei United, but of late, she felt perhaps it would be for the best if she returned to them more often. It would be good to find some manner of physical activity to fill her empty time, even if she would have preferred to hunt down any unfinished work that might need doing. Mm, it was a bit busier than she had anticipated. Spotting a face she knew better than most of the others, Abalia approached her seated officer, offering a nod of greeting.

"Good afternoon, Miss Arima. Do you mind if I join you?"

She had intended to pursue her hakuda training rather intensively, once upon a time. She hoped she might perhaps return to these aims, and she found it quite fortunate to see a subordinate she already knew well practicing Hakuda. Of course, if Makoto wished to practice alone, Abalia would understand.

Fist against wood, rinse and repeat the process. Makoto enjoyed the therapeutic process of it all, just because she had a natural talent for zanpakuto and zanjutsu didn't mean she would neglect her body and this task was a nice distraction. She could fall into a meditative state of focus and forget all her troubles. It was nice, even though she often went to sleep sore.

"Hm?"

Snapping back to reality while finishing her strike, Makoto turned to face Abalia. The voice sounded familiar but she had not expected it to belong to the woman that was before her. If there was a woman that Makoto might be called a fangirl for it was the Captain Commander. Right up there with her former Captain himself. Never would she have imagined a situation where Abalia came and asked to join her.

"Captain Commander Kyoraku.. Of course, ma'am. It would be an honour for me to train with you."

She offerred a smile, looking past Abalia for a moment to take notice of the few members that noticed the two women that you probably wouldn't call normal. Sane even with their workaholic attitude, though for two very different reasons. Makoto never really understood why Abalia was the way she was, she hoped that Abalia didn't really know why she was herself either.

"What is it you would like to practice?"

It was very professional, even outside of working hours she didn't just switch off that part of her mind. She never did rest.

Giving a very faint smile of her own in return, Abalia thought for only a moment before responding to Makoto. Admittedly, she did not anticipate it being called an honor simply to practice hakuda with her, but she supposed that it did make some degree of sense.

"I do not wish to interrupt your current drills with my own intentions. But, beyond that, I have not trained in quite some time. I would prefer simply to join you in your current exercises, if they would be appropriate."

Abalia may have been the superior officer, but she of course would not expect Makoto to simply change her regimen on account of her intentions.

"That is fine. I am currently practicing Tainoumeiseki. It's nothing quite complex but I believing failing to maintain understanding of basic fundamentals in favour of more advanced techniques are restrictive towards one's growth."

It wasn't anything complex, it was familiar from most shinigami's academy days. So some familiarity should ring from it. Makoto was all for identifying her weaknesses and removing them from herself and while she worded it as only wanting to build on the basics even more, she knew it was only partially true with how much she struggled to avoid getting to aggressive in a fight.

"If that's something you would like to train I am more than happy to indulge you in a spar."

Strangely she felt at ease, normally she felt wary about sparring people out of concern that her sadistic tendencies might bleed through but there was a mix of respect and something else, maybe a little bit of fear given the stories of how Abalia's very gaze could freeze people in their tracks when she wanted to.

"Perfect. I believe that I remember much of the technique involved, but given I have not practiced in any serious capacity in quite some time, I believe returning to these fundamentals will prove very helpful."

It generally wasn't well known about Abalia, at least outside of her classmates from the Academy, but she had been considered a very promising student of Hakuda, though her lack of significant energy to utilize proved very detrimental to her overall potential.

"I would of course ask that you not hold yourself back for my sake, yes? I know that my position and my lack of recent practice may lead you to keep from offering your best effort, but I believe that I cannot learn properly against an opponent keeping their best from me. My only request would be to bear in mind that I am with child, but as tainoumeiseki does not focus on such specific targeted strikes or takedowns, I do not believe that will be too much concern."

Frankly, Abalia knew most might feel she'd just contradicted herself with those two stipulations, but she had confidence that her seated officer would understand the difference between keeping from endangering her pregnancy, and totally holding herself back in her technique. Makoto seemed intelligent, so far as Abalia could tell.

Makoto nodded to both Abalia and herself, fundamentals were just that for a reason after all. The information of her being with child though did throw Makoto off, such knowledge really made it hard to imagine going all out but she sighed, Makoto decided to focus on the techniques she wasn't comfortable in, so the efficacy of her strikes would be reduced even if she tried her hardest to execute them.

"Of course, yes ma'am."

She gave Abalia a chance to ready herself, idly thinking about how far pregnant her superior might be while getting ready herself. After she gave a sign to show she was ready and the seated officer gave a sigh of reluctance she didn't bother finishing, Makoto wasted no time in kicking off and closing the distance trying to strike at her chest, a little above the breasts which made her bite her lip.

She was holding back she noticed from that strike being thoughtful of striking the more tender area of her chest. At it's core though she did intend for it to be grabbed, so maybe she was overthinking it.

It had been a long while since Abalia needed to consider the many possibilities of an interaction in hand to hand combat, and it was quite immediately apparent to her that she was not as analytical as she had once been. Still, she could see the direction of the incoming strike, and while she did make the correct motions necessary to have stopped it, Makoto was still a touch too fast to be defended against.

"Mm, that was good technique. You are quick, though I am certain I am not the first to tell you as much."

Obviously, receiving a blow, even in training, had been painful, but that did not particularly dissuade Abalia. Instead, she simply looked confidently to Makoto, the faintest hint of her indomitable will clear in her gaze and in her voice.

"Please do try that again, Miss Arima. I believe with some time I should be able to properly react."

When she felt it connect she purposely pulled back, primarily to avoid excess force pushing Abalia off her feet, especially given her own fighting style with Hakuda being very orientated towards explosive force and destructiveness. Makoto didn't intend for her strike to actually hit though and once it did hit and she had quickly halted, the seated officer paused while staring at Abalia's eyes with her own red ones.

"Thank you for the compliment and yes ma'am."

She was prompted to repeat and that is what she did, only receeding her fist from Abalia's chest when asked to repeat. Makoto did intend to give her partner a chance to analyse and evaluate the situation, and finally the product of that situation in the way that brought her fist against her chest. So when asked to repeat she did exactly that, the same strike. Precisely done to the same specifications.

Another incoming strike, and though Abalia studied it far more intensely this time, she still did not have the immediate reactions necessary to stop the blow. One might reasonably assume that Abalia would find such a thing frustrating, but if she did, she gave no indication that it was the case.

"I do apologize, but I must ask that you bear with me until I am able to properly react. Once more, if you would."

Abalia's will was certainly becoming more pronounced now, her drive to succeed in even this simple exercise carried through her words. It was not a matter of pride for her, or disappointment in her failure. It was, ultimately, simply a matter of competence.
