For some reason, while in the arms of Ulv, something inside of her heart began to feel.. warm again. Verniy didn't know why or how Ulv did it but both her thoughts and heart started to calm itself down as if she didn't feel so overwhelmed in despair anymore. Her grip against her hand eventually loosened, a sign that her bottled up feelings were somewhat relieved.
She felt calmer than before, no longer having to confront these foreign feelings that she didn't know how to cope with. When Ulv came out with those questions to her, she hesitated for a bit because she didn't know how to provide an answer but still, she wanted to try her best to convey it.
"I left.. this place for a long time.."
She stopped for a bit and took a deep breath in before she continued.
"If.. I didn't leave Mirja out of my own selfishness, maybe she wouldn't.. have died."
Somehow, Verniy felt comfortable enough with Ulv that she could at least trust her and be honest with her feelings. At least, there is someone to hear her out -- even if she couldn't cry, even if she couldn't express her pain.
"I felt if I couldn't protect.. one friend.. then what good am I?"
