Grades are important
Mon Sep 24, 2018 5:41 pm
Reyla frowned as she walked towards the building where her evaluation was to take place, the echoing clicking of her sandals providing her with nothing to distract herself with as she made her way to her destination. Her recent move to the fourth division had come with a bit of a caveat, namely that in order to determine what tasks she'd be best suited for they wanted to test her combat potential.
The need for a test like this made sense, though it didn't necessarily make Reyla any more comfortable. Not that she'd show any nervousness, or that she wasn't well accustomed to, and secretly rather excited by, getting into combat she'd had the misfortune to be given time to do some minor research on the one evaluating her. Key word there being minor, all she'd had time to find out was the fact that her examiner wasn't in the fourth, and that she was extremely strong.
Hopefully this test wouldn't rely on how much damage Reyla was able to do to her opponent.
Regardless, Reyla was committed to provide a good showing, she wouldn't allow anything less from herself, and with that in mind she calmly opened the doors, strolling in with an air of confidence as she went to meet her trial.

Magnolia was the type of person who appreciated function, efficiency, and everything when it was working as it should. Unfortunately, her enjoyment of order often also meant that she found ways to restore it, or aid in it’s continued smooth flow. In this case, she had ended up after getting drunk two nights prior with some of the regular shinigami of the gotei united--had somehow ended up as the person who was going to do combat evaluations for new recruits. While it wasn’t a job that was entirely glamorous, which could be seen by magnolia currently sitting on her knees her back straight as an arrow as she was going through the process of cleaning her nodachi, a lovely battle-worn blade she fondly had called a “big bear sword”.
No one had been by, and the easygoing weather of the gotei united. With it’s typically picturesque blue skies, and easy going breezes were enough to make Magnolia sleepy. However, just before she contemplated the fact that her vice-captain, would probably chew her out if she fell asleep on the job, being the serious lass that she was--the sound of geta clacking against the floor below was enough to bring the wandering thoughts of magnolia back to the present.
Currently, her spiritual pressure was suppressed to the point that even to a trained combatant, she’d seem simply like another unseated officer. Her eyes shone with an almost magnetic quality as she glanced forward, the near imperceptible feeling of “static” being the main feeling that could be gauged within the room. When those time-worn double doors, with their traditional japanese architecture swung open, this new recruit would be met with the sight of magnolia slowly standing up, leaving her twelve foot long sword resting on the ground as she asked in a fairly straightforward manner.
”Hello, I am Magnolia. I take it you are here to be assessed? “

Reyla was greeted by the sight of a tall, fairly well built blond woman pushing herself up from a sitting position with the aid of a frankly overly large blade. From the smell in the air she'd likely just been cleaning the blade, though the what the blade implied more caught Reyla's interest.
While it was true that having a longer blade meant that more force could be put behind it, the larger the sword the harder it would be to control it's momentum, and given that she somehow doubted that someone who couldn't use their weapon would be given any kind of authority, testing or otherwise, in the seireitei it was a fairly safe assumption that the woman in front of her could also control that blade.
So why did she feel so weak? What Reyla had found out and what the woman's equipment implied was that the blond headed girl in front of her was an absolute powerhouse, not a normal run of the mill Shinigami. Something didn't add up here, unfortunately demanding an explanation would be uncouth and possibly detrimental to Reyla's evaluation, so she held her tongue and kept her face in a mask of serenity.
When she was close enough that she could be easily heard Reyla bowed to the woman, Magnolia, and Introduced herself. "My name is Reyla Natori, it's a pleasure to meet you." Normally Reyla wouldn't have bowed to anyone who felt to be of the level of strength that the woman in front of her projected, but all of her instincts screamed at her not to underestimate this woman.
Standing back up Reyla continued, "And yes, that is why I'm here."

Respect was often something earned, and not simply given. So when this new recruit bowed to magnolia, her expression remained in that pleasant, neutrally smiling mask. The sword that she had today was one of the many tools in her arsenal, however it wasn’t the weapon she was intending to use today. It wasn’t because she felt that none of the new recruits could force her to use a blade, but rather this particular blade would destroy a large radius with every swing, and it was simply not conducive to utilize it in the grounds of the seireitei, which was why Magnolia settled the blade down in a typical japanese style wrack, and then turned to face the evaluee once more.
Earnest. That was the first notion that entered her head about this girl. Earnest and Astute. While magnolia tended to not dwell on the more complex matters of her superiors, she did have a knack when it came for judging the character of a person. This girl would do well in a division that often had the reputation of the gotei in their hands on a day to day basis. However the more important question here had to be how well she was capable of fighting. Magnolia was fairly straight forward, her tone flowing smoothly like a flowing stream as she spoke to reyla.
”Very well reyla. You are free to start your assessment at any time you feel ready to do so. “
While magnolia said that, to the untrained eye all she did was faintly shift the back of her foot. It would make her seem to stand a tad straighter. To the trained eye however, it would be clear that magnolia redistributed the center of gravity of her body till it was sitting center-line. This would make it much easier for her to evade, or counter attacks as she needed to. There was also the fact that even though magnolia was smiling, there was a faint pressure being emitted from her, an aura all warriors seemed to carry that had been vetted and honed by battle. There was only a wisp of it lingering in her steady gaze, however it could still potentially be detected.
Now all that was left to do was wait for reyla to feel comfortable to start.

Reyla had no qualms admitting that she wasn't particularly skilled with hand to hand combat, or at all for that matter, but what skill she had with her blade meant that she had no doubt that the subtle movements that Magnolia had made were to prepare her for a fight, or at least to prepare her to dodge the hits coming towards her.
Reyla needed no other prompting to begin, and immediately fired off a spell. "Hadō number six, Nenshorai!" As Reyla swing her hand out a flash of red lightning leaped from her fingertips towards Magnolia, and even though there wasn't nearly enough distance between them for the spells blast to have much force behind it, especially since Reyla had skipped the incantation, the size and amount of light produced by the spell wouldn't decrease, meaning that with luck it would temporarily blind magnolia.
As soon as the blast was released Reyla leapt up into the air and created a platform underneath her feet as she drew her blade and pointed it towards where Magnolia was, prepared to follow her as she escaped the blast, and began to incant, "Bind them with the holy symbol..."

Magnolia's body shifted first backward on the first step, right as Reyla fired off her first spell. The second step magnolia made would be on a pivot, as her body barely avoided the flash of red, by moving to the left, that scorched through the room, her kimono getting singed by the close proximity of the attack.
"Hmm..., shes decisive enough, and her attack shows the logical progression of thought prompting her attack. " Magnolia thought faintly.
Magnolia had greatly restricted her speed in the movements that followed. However, she still moved explosively, like a flash to appear before the new recruit. Magnolia made sure, having based her attack speed off the reaction time Reyla had showcased, that Reyla would be capable of coping with it. She wouldn't make it easy by any means, given the angle of her palm thrust, and her naturally iron-like skin was still enough to cause the air to howl, and whip about in a faint gale around them.
The timing of this was very abrupt, and would most likely interrupt the incantation that Reyla was attempting to make. Further, the following thrust would aim to force Reyla from the platform in the air; intending to throw her back onto the ground. It would be clear that Magnolia was testing her actual combat aptitude: Reyla's skills, specialties, and her ability to adapt. It would be less apparent that Magnolia was testing her Intellect: forethought, mental deduction, as well as her willpower. All these things were important to the Shinigami.
Magnolia, for now, seemed to be taking a more passive role. She wasn't as apt to actively engage. After all, this was an assessment.

Magnolia was fast, in less than the blink of an eye she was in front of Reyla, one open hand rising fast enough to audibly tear through the surrounding air as in sped towards her, it was almost to fast for Reyla to react to.
Almost.
She knew that if she wanted to keep her focus she wouldn't be able to avoid taking at least a glancing blow, so she didn't try. As she spoke, if Magnolia wanted to interrupt Reyla's casting she'd have to do something more unexpected than rushing out of what was an obvious distraction, Reyla dispersed the platforms she was standing on and began to drop like a rock and managed to allow her off arm to relax just in time to turn it towards Magnolia so as to take the blow on her shoulder and transfer most of the momentum into flipping back and spinning as she fell, creating and pushing off of another platform as soon as she was angled correctly to rocket underneath Magnolia facing towards her as she finished the incantation, "Bakudo number 20, Binding Cross!"
Reyla used the flash of light generated as the sealing cross left the tip of her blade to cover her rapid decent from the ground, where she noticed she was definitely not doing well. She had no doubt that Magnolia was holding back for this, but even with doing everything she could to lessen the blow Reyla's entire left arm was throbbing with a dull ache, another hit like that and she doubted she'd be able to use the arm for the rest of the bout. What was more was that she was beginning to feel the fatigue in her legs from her rapid use of Shunpo, it wasn't a problem yet but Reyla knew her limits, and while her reserves for casting spells were fairly high she wasn't quite as skilled with using the more mobile arts that her kind were known for and if she attempted to use them to dart around the battle field like that any more she'd run out of energy well before she made a decent impression.
With all of that in mind Reyla took up a defensive stance, she doubted that Magnolia would allow herself to be caught by her binding, or that it would hold her long if it did, and prepared to meet her next strike.

Magnolia Everfrost
Song: UNKNOWN - Artist: UNKNOWN - Words: 1012
"...Good reaction skills, keen combat tactics, an ability to calmly assess the situation at hand as needed. "
Magnolia's thoughts continued to go down a path of logical progression, checking and gauging Reyla based on her proficiencies and shortcomings. So far Reyla had demonstrated fantastic combat logic, more then that though she had a calm and collected outlook, a trait essential in any form of combat.
Magnolia's eyes followed Reyla's motion as she dropped like a rock, seeing how she managed to mitigate a vast majority of the force, and even transfer it. She was impressed so far with how this shinigami handled herself, of course, that didn't mean that she was planning on going easy on her though.
Reyla had managed to complete her incantation, a blinding flash of kido flying upwards at Magnolia, who countered by utilizing one of the hakuda technique's standard to shinigami: Single Bone. The utilization of 40% of her strength, accompanied by her level of skill would be enough to crush the kido outright. It seemed --at least to magnolia-- that Reyla was extremely competent in kido for someone of her skill level. Based on the mastery in which was displayed for casting, and the strength of the cast techniques, she most likely focused on this skill extensively.
Based on the following criteria: 1-Combat Intelligence, 2-Skill, 3-Demeanor, Magnolia had a fairly good idea at this point what division she was going to recommend this girl for. However, there still were two important factors to take into consideration: Character & Morality. Which was why as Magnolia picked up the pace, dropping like a rock to land of the floor, only to then launch forward like a gust of wind to appear before Reyla she began to talk as she launched her flurry of attacks.
"If I said I would assign you to a prestigious position, but I told you that you had to lie, falsify information, or otherwise compromise the honor and integrity of the Gotei United to do it, would you do so?"
Her body moved in a flurry of motions, first starting with a punch, which would transition into an elbow blow. This, of course, would segway into a backhand that would flawlessly transition into magnolia's open palm grasping the hem of her Haori, after which Magnolia's arm would pull forward, and she'd utilize the change in motion, combined with a leg sweet, to flip Reyla into the air and throw her back a ways. Like any situation, there was a chance of Reyla managing to evade quite a few of these blows, especially considering Magnolia timed them so that they would be within the scope of her reflex time. The entire point of this was to gauge her potential, not hound her with the gap in power between them. After that exchange, Magnolia would shift back two yards, maintaining a firm fighting stance as she gauged this girl, and waited for her reply.

As Magnolia dropped Reyla knew that she would be coming in for a physical strike, or at least she assumed she would. Regardless it was clear that an offensive move was coming, so she reacted accordingly, "El Escudo!"
With those words a shimmering green barrier sprung up in front of Reyla just as Magnolia's first blow landed, the sheer strength of the blow causing cracks to spider web across it's surface.
The barrier withstood the first punch and the second elbow strike, but shattered with the sound of crashing glass as Magnolia's backhand came in contact with it, bits of the hardened Reiatsu actually flying back and scraping across Reyla's cheek, drawing a bit of blood. Reyla hadn't been cowering behind her shield without a plan of action however, and as soon as the barrier shattered she pulled her blade up , running the edge forcefully along Magnolia's fingers as she sliced off the chunk of her Haori that the woman had grabbed.
Unfortunately she wasn't able to jump out of the way of the leg sweep in time, and as she felt her legs pulled out from under her she tucked her head and arms in to herself and rolled away as she hit the ground, springing back up on her now aching ankles as soon as she was able.
Ignoring Magnolia's question for a moment Reyla curiously brought her free hand up to her cheek and pulled it away, looking at the blood. Before she could help herself her mind began to race with possibilities, though realising she was still in combat she halted herself, belatedly realizing that her notebook and pen were floating beside her, having been pulled out of her haori in her telekinetic grip as she furiously began to notate her thoughts.
Snapping her attention back to the matter at hand Reyla grabbed her notebook and pen out of the air and shoved them in her Haori before settling back into a battle ready stance and responding.
"That would depend on the purpose of the offer. If you mean that you were to offer me a position in the gotei as an officer for no real reason, then no. If you were to ask me to take the mantle of a high ranking member in earths government, or even in our own if the goal was to identify a mole or other threat, with an actual reason that necessitated the fallacy then yes. Information is a tool to be used as necessary."
Reyla had considered lying, but she felt that this was more of a trick question. After all, everyone's first response, regardless of the truth of the matter, to a question like that would have to have been a resounding no in an attempt to impress their evaluator.

Reyla undoubtedly was a gem. Her capacity for calmly reacting to the situation was stellar, she was also calm, and collected even now. As Magnolia's onslaught clashed against the emerald shield, she still studied, gauged, and assessed the girl in front of her. From the moment the shield shattered, and the girl sacrificed a part of her Haori, to the faint line that was drawn across the tips of magnolia's fingers, slight beads of blood dripping from the surface of her hand.
All of it, from the first action to the recovery at the end was superb. Magnolia took a moment to look at the sticky red line that graced four of her fingers and listened to what Reyla had to say. Her line of thought was perfect, even though Magnolia was simple, she indeed agreed--information was simply a tool. Throughout this ordeal it might be good to note magnolia had been rather mild-tempered, she had kept her emotions and opinions in check, silently gauging the opponent.
However, at this moment a brilliant grin spread across her lips. All she had to say was simply the expression of her own emotions.
"Interesting."
Magnolia seemed to sharpen her stance, exuding her will as she asked in a tone that was perfunctory once more.
"Then what about loyalty, honor, and integrity? What are those things to you."
The sharpness of Magnolia's gaze and the weight that was exuded from it was one of scrutiny. It would most likely feel like the golden-haired shinigami was capable of staring straight into Reyla's soul. It wasn't blatantly oppressive, but there was a pressure that was exuded from the look in her eyes. Combined with her stance it personified her own will, her own determination.
Magnolia had also very purposefully released this will, to see what kind of answer Reyla might give. After all, this was one of the most important questions as far as Magnolia was concerned. Talent didn't always mean they were a perfect fit for the division they were ultimately put into. Morals, Intentions, and Skillsets also played a fair bit into it as well. Magnolia already knew she could handle herself in a fight, now it was simply a matter of determining where she would best fit, and go from there.
