Personality: Gendo is someone with no morals. He is the grey area. He works for him and his goals only. Gendo is the type of person who can see and think about the welfare of an organization as a whole. In other words, he'd do anything to succeed. He takes drastic and extreme measures, by fair means or foul, or by hook or by crook, in order to accomplish his own purpose. Everything he does is for his goals. He will go against laws, other people, and others' moral codes to get what he needs. He feels no remorse whatsoever. Rather, he lacks remorse. He lacks empathy. He lacks sympathy. He does not care for what others want, what they desire, or even what they like. It's all about Gendo.

However, this isn't meaning to say that he feels he himself is a center of attention. Gendo would rather not be the center of attention. Gendo is a master manipulator, a puppeteer. Although Gendo pretends to follow Misaiko and Shimura's orders without question, he has his own agenda and tries (sucessfully) to manipulate them into furthering his goals. They currently don't have a purpose themselves in his goals, so he uses them mainly to further fund and expand them. Gendo does not write down anything related to his goals. He does not discuss his goals with anyone. Gendo and only Gendo knows what he plans.

Basic Magic: The Sugiura's have a list of their own Magic they use as well as Shinigami Kidō, you can have up to a bit of Kidō but not every single part of it, also mix it between the magic and Kidō. They cannot be a Kidō master, but can be quite talented at it. however a sugiura could be a master at their magic spells of course. depending on the the type that is.

Instrumentality is the name of Gendo's magecraft. It is special one that relies on concepts and only concepts. It is broken down into different categories as per its effects. All of it is done upon touch of his hands. However, he has special gloves that work against Instrumentality's effects. The basis of instrumentality is "rejecting the self." The main drawback of all of these is that the more he uses it, the more of his own self is lost. Instrumentality also requires Gendo to actually touch (with his bare hands) whatever needs to be affected.

Objective Instrumentality: Objective Instrumentality applies to everything that is a physical object without self-awareness. Trees, doors, computers, and even weapons without a soul attached all fit into this. Objective Instrumentality is the simplest of the three categories in terms of how it works. It rejects the self of the object. It simply converts the part of where Gendo touches into the energy that is most dominant around it. This does not mean the entire object does, but only where he touches it. If he touches a door, it makes a hole the shape and size of his hand.
Subjective Instrumentality: Subjective Instrumentality applies to things such as energy attacks, large clumps of spiritual particles, and other intangible things that Gendou can interact with once manifested by another. It does not work well at all. In fact, it's only good against attacks that have a defined target. It rejects the self as well, but it only works on the part of "what I am aiming for." This doesn't mean he can suddenly change an attack's direction. No, it means that it won't see its original target. To be honest, it only works on homing attacks. And it's really not even that effective as it relies on him touching it with his hands.
Human Instrumentality: This is the strongest form of Instrumentality. Human Instrumentality affects everything with self awareness. Human Instrumentality does not do what eith Objective nor Subjective does. For one, it works by rejecting the self of "individuality." Second, it does not destroy part of it; it destroys the whole. This would create an existence where nobody existed singularly, but merely as part of the whole. In Human Instrumentality, the flaws in every living being would be complemented by the strengths in others, thus erasing the insecurities in people's hearts. So instead of merging with a whole as-is, it works by keeping the person's "individuality" in a specialized container inside Gendou's right arm. However, it does not empower Gendou in the slightest. If anything, it weakens him. With a mortal body, he can not contain as much "indivualities" as needed for his plans. The other weakness is that it has to be bare-skin-on-bare-skin. Gendou can't perform Human Instrumentality without touching the skin of the other. However, that isn't to say that he can turn someone into orange goo by barely touching them. Human Instrumentality is different because of the scale. It takes a full-strength grab to do so. And Human Instrumentality also has one final drawback: those with a extremely high sense of self (see: Grand-Master in Willpower) are completely immune to it. Those with a high sense of self (see: Master in Willpower) require two grabs with a two post interval between them.

Character Background: Gendo Ikari was born as Gendo Rokubungi (六分儀, meaning sextant). Though virtually nothing is known about his childhood or young adulthood, what is known is that he was a brilliant scientist that furthered Beast Sugiura research by drastic amount. During study, he met Yui Ikari, with whom he started a relationship. Many who knew him thought that the only reason for his and Yui's relationship was her connections to the royal family; however, his connection to Yui went far deeper. He wanted to dissolve his self and her self to make them one being. He and Yui were married some few centuries ago, wherein he changed his surname to Ikari. In Japan, as in the West, it is highly uncommon for a man to take on his wife's surname after marriage. It could be seen to symbolize submission or "un-masculinity" on Gendo's part.

After finishing his study, they both worked together at Gehirn, which is the group that maintains Acheron. Rather quickly, Gendo became the leader. He met with both Misaiko and Shimura to request funding for a project to fully "contain" the Grail, which is kept deep in Acheron. His skills of manipulation were very apparent as he easily gained the funding. In 2401, Yui and Gendo's son Shinji was born. It was by then that Gendo had the mechanism to make his plan actuality. The funding had created a functioning Tsurugi capable of transmitting Gendo's Instrumentality. However, it required a soul. Gendo removed Yui's self and implanted it into what is known as Evangelion Unit 01. To keep his goals secret, he reported that she had died in trying to activate it.

After the "failed" activation test of Unit 01 and Yui's apparent death during this event, Gendo removed his friendly mask and became very cold and distant. This was even towards Shinji, whom he sent to live with a teacher on Earth and had very little contact with. In fact, he had made it seem like there was no Sugiura realm and that Gendo was human like Yui. Gendo remained in power with Gehirn after that still. Gendo entered into affairs with both Naoko Akagi and, later, her daughter, causing others to feel doubt on his commitment to Yui; however, Gendo was simply using them to achieve the means to accomplish his goals. And now, Shinji is old enough to be used... and so Gendo now plans to use his own son to re-awaken Yui, spreading Instrumentality throughout the worlds.
