She has extremely long, purple hair that she prefers to style in one thick braid, usually adding a small decoration with ornate hair pins. Synopsis: After a 300-year stasis, Maaya reawakens to find herself alone—her family seemingly gone, her powers diminished, and the modern world filled with mind-boggling technology. To her frustration, she also discovers that the Quincy have thrived in her absence, fueling her determination to rebuild her strength and carve out her place in this new world, but that’s not happening easily…
I. Personality
» Personality: After the wretched treatment Maaya experienced by her family and the man she thought loved her, Maaya has become convinced that Quincy, and their pride, are the root of the world’s problems. Their reckless and selfish obsession with power inspired Maaya’s mission to find a way to eradicate them completely or remove the capability of becoming a Quincy. Maaya’s goal is to break this vicious cycle once and for all, and above all, prevent innocent lives form being lost as collateral damage in the wars that Quincy so willingly create.
Because of her perspective, Maaya has come to see creatures like Hollows and Arrancar as more natural to the world than the Quincy. At least Hollows and Arrancar act on instinct and hunger, like beasts, rather than making a conscious choice to do evil. They also don’t disrupt the soul cycle with their actions, unlike the Quincy, who knowingly and willingly do so for their own selfish reasons.
Behind the ambition and determination, Maaya still holds a sense of grace and elegance. She is a soft-spoken woman, who has the memories of a three hundred year old battle fresh in her mind. After losing her child, her family, and everything she knew, Maaya puts her goal on the back burner to try an understand this new world she has found herself in. Maaya is still getting used to the advancements in medical care, technology, music, and so much more. Though she finds much of these advancements wonderful, especially in medicine and the abundance of delicious food, her frustration toward touch screens knows no bounds.
For the first time in her life, Maaya has full control over everything she can do. With this newfound freedom, she can’t help but want to explore her identity in this new world, but she hesitates a lot. There is so much she finds interesting, terrifying, and even downright disturbing. When she is not training and trying to regain her powers, Maaya is taking some time to get to know the world again. In these endeavors, she is noticeably jumpy and easier to scare, like when she decided eating ice cream was too risky because her brain could freeze if she ate too fast.
» Likes: Cell phones, computers, Internet… Air conditioners, flat Screens, movies, vehicles, bug spray, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, lotion, modern music streaming services, showers/baths, water heaters, electricity, coffee, football (the American kind), instant ramen, pudding, hot wings, frozen yogurt, tacos, bagels, pizza, spaghetti, soda… Food. She likes food and will try most things.
» Dislikes: Cell phones, computers, Internet… LED lights are too bright, movie theaters are always way too loud, audio books destroy the real experience, malls are too expensive, history sucks to read, meat made of plants doesn’t taste the same, vegans suck, vegetarians suck, virtual reality is too realistic, avocado is nasty, shellfish is horrid, and caviar is worse. The name Kaito is disgusting.
» Confused By: Gay people, trans people, global warming, video games, social media, space exploration, the existence of demons, and space travel
» Wants To Experience: A big casino, theme park rides, flying in a place, taking a cruise, riding in a bullet train, going sky diving, going bunji jumping, attending a big sporting event, going snowboarding, surfing, scuba diving, and eating ice cream.
I. History
» History: Maaya, born into the Shiino Clan, was marked as an outsider due to her mother’s marriage to a commoner, which led to her being labeled "impure." Her struggles with reishi only deepened her family’s disappointment, and she and her parents faced the threat of banishment if she did not succeed. Forced into harsh training, Maaya endured brutal sessions where older Quincy children targeted her out of disdain. In one session, she was relentlessly attacked, yet she kept standing back up. Her resilience intrigued the instructor, who allowed the torment to escalate. Pushed to her limit, Maaya’s desperation unleashed her hidden power, drawing on reiryoku instead of reishi to fire bolts of lightning at the other children, electrocuting her attackers and revealing her hidden strength. This turning point marked her transformation into a weapon for the Shiino Clan.
Maaya was reduced to little more than a weapon for crushing rival Quincy clans, but her uncontrolled electricity, influenced by her emotions, became a problem. To help her harness this power, a vassal clan crafted a specialized katana for her to channel her energy. However, when Maaya first used the katana, her electricity went haywire, revealing her true nature—not as a Quincy, but as a human with rare powers, explaining her struggle to wield Quincy weapons. Inspired, Maaya learned to shape her electricity herself, eventually refining it from a simple bolt into a beautiful, masterly crafted, purple katana. Maaya began sparring with her katana, discovering its unique "tomoe" mark. Driven by her desire for control where her electricity goes, she found that when marked with the tomoe, her electricity would relentlessly track her target until it struck or was dodged. She spent a year honing this ability and refining her combat skills in preparation for real battles.
Maaya faced her first battle at eleven, confronting a Hollow that was terrorizing a Quincy settlement. Armed with her katana, Hontō, Maaya’s ruthless nature became a vital asset. However, she quickly realized she lacked the necessary speed. When an ally was about to be killed, her desperation drove her to create her own step technique: accompanied by a deafening thunderclap, she blinked across the battlefield. As the Hollow lunged, Maaya unleashed a surge of electricity from her katana, shattering its mask and sending it back through the Soul Cycle.
Over five years, Maaya proved herself a quick learner and innovator. Watching her Quincy relatives, she developed her own techniques, adapting to reiryoku rather than reishi. Her accidental step technique became Raiho, and she created Kekkōran and Seidenki, a variation of her family’s “Blut.” The family limited her knowledge of Quincy spellcraft, fearing her potential. Through various tests, they discovered Maaya’s unique ability: her body adapted to others’ energy over time, making her harder to fight the longer a battle lasted. Resenting this “mutation” of her human lineage, they nevertheless saw it as a valuable asset, one they planned to exploit.
At sixteen, Maaya faced a powerful Arrancar, far stronger and faster than any Hollow she’d fought. With her katana, Hontō, Maaya dodged energy blasts, adapting gradually to the Arrancar’s reiryoku. Each time its blade struck her, she sent electric pulses through the contact, irritating her opponent and giving her an edge. Though outmatched in strength and speed, her spiritual adaptation increased her resistance with each attack, allowing her to endure even the Arrancar’s cero blasts. In a final and desperate move, Maaya’s weapon transformed in her hands as she was forced to adapt to the Arrancar’s strange. This gave birth to her Nihontō, a Naginata form of her weapon. Through it, she channeled her electricity to greater effect, allowing her power to paralyze it momentarily, delivering a lethal strike through its neck and officially defeating her first Arrancar.
During an event that Maaya personally calls the “Quincy Wars,” the Shiino family sought to subjugate rival clans and used her as a weapon against the incoming threats of the Gotei. Messages from Shinigami had just begun to arrive about Quincy dealing with hollow and unbalancing the Soul Cycle. In fear and arrogance, the Shiino targeted the Kamari family, a once-proud lineage of Quincy that refused to bend to Shiino Rule. Even though Maaya expressed serious reservations about dealing with the Kamari with such force, she was sent as the spearhead of the attack. It was during this battle that Maaya first utilized every ounce of her power. With swift, calculated attacks, Maaya dismantled their strongest warriors, her Nihontō dancing through their ranks. By the end of the battle, the Kamari family was completely wiped out, leaving only the memory of their resistance behind.
The Nagami Family was next on the Shiino’s list, though they were wiser. After witnessing the destruction of the Kamari, they chose to meet Maaya’s might with submission rather than bloodshed. However, a small faction within the Nagami still resisted, forcing Maaya to demonstrate the consequences of their defiance. In a brief but intense battle, she fought against the family's last holdouts, her Hontō flashing with arcs of electricity as she parried their attacks. Each clash only strengthened her, as the Nagami unleashed their arrows, unaware that Maaya’s spiritual adaption was feeding off their power. With each blow they dealt, they unwittingly enhanced her resistance, until their energy barely affected her. In the final moments, while using her Nihontō, Maaya immobilized the rebels with bolts of lightning before delivering the Shiino their victory, sealing the Nagami’s fate as vassals of the Shiino, but also unknowingly sealing her own fate as well.
When Maaya was forced into an arranged marriage with Kaito Nagami, she initially resisted. She secretly had feelings for another, and she did not feel like she would be accepted by the Nagami after slaughtering some of their strongest, but the Shiino and Nagami made a deal, where the Nagami would fall loyally in line under the Shiino if their leader’s son was wed to Maaya. In order to protect her parents and keep her family from fighting another senseless war, she relented to Shiino demand. Surprisingly, over time, she began to trust and love her husband as they built a decent life together. Unknown to her, however, he harbored his own ambitions and grudges, and once she had their first child, the truth of his intentional manipulations of her emotions were revealed. He never loved her and only wanted to birth an heir strong enough to one day untie the forced bonds the Nagami suffered through. Maaya’s fury reached an unspeakable peak after that.
During a meeting meant to untie the two families, or unite them further from the Shiino’s point of view, Maaya discovered more foolishness she could not abide by. They knew the Gotei was coming and demanded them to cease assisting with the destruction of the Soul Cycle, but neither family had any plans on listening. In fact, they planned to use Maaya again, force her back into the chaos of war in order to fight off Shinigami and preserve their selfish way of life. And so, the Quincy became her enemy. Maaya turned her blade on both sides, unleashing all the power she had cultivated over the years. The weapon they trained and used over the years came down on them with a vengeance. She killed all but a few, choosing to keep her mother, father, and child alive, but in doing so, their fear of her wrath led them to utilizing an old ritual, a gebet that sealed her and her powers away. Maaya fell into an unnaturally deep sleep, her body frozen in time and entombed in the family crypt until 300 years later, when she opened her eyes as the seal ran out of power.
I. Natural Abilities
» Natural Abilities:
Reiryoku-Starved Expert: In short, Maaya has a low spirit class, but high racial skills. With the keen knowledge and understanding of her own power, she created abilities that utilized reiryoku instead of reishi without having any sort of guidance. She was able to observe methods of Quincy and apply different techniques to her own ability creation at such a young age that she should be considered a prodigy, but there was no good comparison for her time. Even with this knowledge, however, the years she spent locked away have compromised her ability to use reiryoku.
Martial Artist: Whether swordsmanship, hand-to-hand, archery, or pole-arm mastery, Maaya has trained in all aspects of combat available in the 1700s; she notably has no skill with firearms. Maaya’s skill with hand-to-hand would be considered proficient, but it is not her main method of fighting. She finds herself most comfortable with a katana or polearm, specifically her naginata and “spirit weapon,” and she is considered very advanced in both of these. Her capabilities with archery, however, are actually below average, due to weapon preference.
I. High-Spec Powers
» Powers: Maaya’s powers manifested in the form of lightning out of desperation to defend herself from her family. Her body and reiryoku are used as a catalyst for the creation of lightning and it reacts to her thoughts and emotions. She can control and create small amounts of it without problem, but when her thoughts and emotions go free, sometimes it can too. This is why she created Hontō.
Note: Any ability with a ☼ next to it are abilities she knows she has, knows how to use, but cannot use because of inefficient energy stores.
Spiritual Adaptation: Assumed to be a “hybrid mutation,” Maaya has a special, passive ability that makes her more resistant to energy-based attacks the longer she is exposed to her opponent's energy. As the fight goes on, her body adjusts to their energy, slowly decreasing damage she takes. The longer she stays in the fight, the tougher she gets. For every energy attack that successfully damages Maaya, she gains a 5% resistance to the opponents energy, maxing out at 60%. Against Quincy, this resistance is 100% stronger, giving her more protection from their energy than from others. This means that each successful attack by a Quincy grants her 10% resistance to a maximum of 70%. Over time, this makes her nearly unstoppable against Quincy, making her a nightmare for them.
- Maaya can accelerate this spiritual adaption by intentionally taking a direct hit from an opponent’s energy-based attack, not physical. By bracing herself and focusing on the incoming energy, she rapidly forces her body to adapt. This ability allows her to gain double the normal resistance from a single attack—10% instead of 5%, or 20% against Quincy instead of 10%. This technique comes at the cost of temporary strain, slowing her movement by 20% for one post after the hit, but it can be a powerful gambit in longer battles.
☼ Raiho (雷歩; Bolt Walk): This is a high-speed technique that is more similar to shinigami’s shunpo due to the step requirement. Utilizing a burst of speed granted by her powers with lightning, Raiho is accompanied by a deafening thunderous boom, sounding at the start and stop of her step. Maaya has dedicated herself to perfecting this skill, so Maaya’s efficiency with Raiho, including the number of steps, speed, and amount that she can use, is extremely high.
- In performing dozens of small, rapid movements with Raiho, Maaya is capable of mimicking the “after image” abilities most commonly known to Shinigami. However, due to her high skill in the subject, she can do this at any angle that she desires, whether that be upside down, sideways, or leaning in unexpected ways. This allows her to attack from surprising angles, catching her opponents of guard, and preventing herself from being caught so easily.
☼ Seidenki (静電肌; Static Skin): Maaya’s Seidenki has one ability, and that is the application of an intense electrical shock that strikes an opponent that harms her. If struck by a melee attack, the shock travels up the body part, or weapon, and into the rest of the body. If struck by a ranged, energy-based attack, the shock travels along the path of the energy fired and back to the opponent to deliver the shock. The strength of the shock delivered is measured by her soul.
☼ Kekkōran (血行嵐; Circulatory Tempest): When activated, Maaya’s Kekkōran does one of two things, chosen at activation. The first is a hardening of her body or tensing of her muscles, making her much more difficult to damage. Mechanically, this gives her a 200% boost to her durability. The second is a regeneration ability that allows surface and muscle wounds to heal rapidly by electrically accelerating the rate at which her body heals. This can be done three times in a thread, but the energy consumption increases by 50% for the second and third uses.
☼ Hontō, [True Wisteria, 本藤]: By concentrating her electricity into the palm of her hand at such a precise level, Maaya creates a solid weapon in the form of a katana. This is Hontō, and it is used to help Maaya be more accurate with her lightning.
» Hontō Appearance:
» Hontō Abilities:
Passive: Upon summoning Hontō, Maaya gains a 100% bonus to her physical skills due to the greater efficiency her reiryoku works at when it’s in use.
Power: When the blade touches a surface, it leaves a purple tomoe mark at the contact point, or in the center of a person’s chest. Maaya can then shoot electricity from her blade, which locks onto the mark and follows it, like a heat-seeking missile. The electricity can strike other objects while tracking the mark, allowing for ways to avoid it. The strength and speed of her electricity is based off of her soul. On the fourth time that an opponent is struck with Maaya’s lightning, the bolt sends a powerful jolt through their body, causing a temporary paralysis that lasts one post. Once placed, a mark lasts the entire thread, she can apply up to a maximum of three marks at once. When a mark is struck by her electricity, it is used up and she can apply another. Maaya can remove a mark at will as long as she touches it.
☼ Nihontō [薾翻藤, Luxuriant Fluttering Wisteria]
» Nihontō Appearance:
» Abilities: Maaya’s Hontō transforms into Nihontō, a Naginata that matches her purple aesthetic. All of the abilities of her spirit weapon are transfered over. The abilities below are what she gains when using Nihontō:
- Ranged Application: No longer requiring the need to make contact with the blade, Nihontō allows Maaya to apply her tomoe mark at range by striking them with any form of her electricity. This is including the shock that happens with her Seidenki.
- Tomoe Stacks: Instead of one tomoe mark, Maaya can stack up to four on the person. For each stack, the damaging effect and speed of her lighting toward that target is increased by 100%, for a total of 400%. She can place marks on up to 4 people at a time, and a maximum of two marks can be applied in a single post.
- Triple Threat:When activating this ability, two more bolts of lighting fire every time Maaya uses her lightning, the bolts appearing on either side and mirroring the initial cast. This ability lasts for two posts
