RUKIA KUCHIKI

Every wounded shinigami that passed by Rukia's operating table was one more flashback to a century ago. Even with that mental tax, however, she couldn't take any time to deal with it. She just shoved it down, healed the wounded, made sure they were stable, and moved onto the next victim of the attack. Despite her working as a healer, the only thing that was keeping Rukia awake was disdain. Toward her former friend, toward the man who had betrayed them all, toward her brother, toward just about anyone that had done what she perceived as "not enough."

But even with as much work as Rukia felt she needed to do, she still understood that working endlessly was a recipe for disaster. She couldn't do her best if she simply went until she dropped. Stepping away for a moment, bags under her eyes and a dull frown on her face, she made her way to the other shinigami who had happened to be working on more or less the same rotation as herself.

"Suika. Come on. It's time for a break."

It was clearly an order, not a request. Rukia wasn't going to let anyone working under her collapse from overwork, either, and that was why she was ensuring that most of them could at least get some modicum of rest that she herself hadn't gotten yet. She led the way outside, wanting to get a little fresh air for at least these 15 minutes, and stared at the sky for a few moments before she spoke to the other shinigami.

"Thanks for sticking around here. You've been a big help."

Due to recent events that Shuten had somewhat participated in, and because of her capabilities, Shuten had been assisted in the relief efforts after the recent invasion. While blood may be on Shuten's hands due to her profession and position, she at least could assist in this way; healing. With her healing sake, the Suika was an excellent addition to those working as healers in the post invasion efforts. With a seemingly never ending rotation of people who needed healing, Shuten's attention was torn away by the firm voice of another Shinigami.

As Shuten's tired purple orbs deviated from her task and captured those of Rukia Kuchiki's own purple eyes. Like Shuten, she appeared tired from their un-ending task. However, Rukia's eyes seemed to hold something else, as if she was haunted by something that she was loath to speak of. It wasn't the Suika's place to pry, and she wasn't one to ignore an order from a superior. Without complaint, the Shinigami ceased her actions and left a few dishes of her healing sake behind for others to use in her absence.

"Yes Ma'am."

Brushing a strand of hair away from her face Shuten rose to follow Rukia, a similar exhaustion on the Suika's countenance. Walking through the kido-corps barracks was just a blur to the Suika, due to all that weighed upon her mind. The recent invasion, the state of the soul society, and all those she had seen today alone with injuries; some more severe than others. Once the pair of Shinigami were outside, Shuten pulled out her personal sake dish, sake, and poured some for herself. She also poured a dish for Rukia, if the woman desired it... If not, Shuten could drink it. Soon came thanks for the Suika's presence, and a gentle smile graced the petite woman's features.

"I'm glad to be of help... It's far more rewarding than what my typical skillset entails. Thank you for allowing me to help. Also, would you like a drink? There's no need to, but it is hard to beat Suika liquor."

Rukia wondered if she should really be drinking on the job, given how important this all was. But one cup of sake was hardly much of anything, and it wasn't going to get in the way of her work. Taking the dish with a nod of thanks, Rukia sipped from it slowly, taking at least a few seconds to actually enjoy what little numbing effect it had.

"If you want to stick around when this is over, I could use a 6th seat. I know it's a step down from the position you have already, but I'll make sure you don't take any pay cuts, at lesat."

She could have tried to be a little more political about it, but why would she be? It was a question that simply came to mind as the woman mentioned how rewarding the work was. If Shuten felt more inclined toward this sort of service than whatever it was the stealth force did, Rukia certainly wasn't going to leave that unaddressed, not when the 2nd needed people more badly than ever.

Shuten was gladdened that Rukia took the sake. It wasn't very potent, her casual drinking sake couldn't be, or else she would never get anything done at work. But, Shuten enjoyed her sake in relative silence, downing much more of the liquid in one sip than Rukia did in two, which was partly because of the woman's innate, and cultured, resistance to alcohol. However, Shuten did somewhat jolt when Rukia made her proposal. She didn't spill the sake, nor otherwise react before she carefully placed down the nearly depleted dish. Join the second...?

Shuten didn't respond to Rukia for a potentially worrisome amount of time, her sake dish had even sat momentarily forgotten. Would she join the second division...? She honestly wasn't sure of the answer. Funds weren't an issue, nor was many other things that came with switching between divisions as far as Shuten was concerned. But, additionally, the stealth force was lacking in members just as badly. Not to mention, the stealth force didn't even have a lieutenant yet. Shuten could only sigh before she looked over at Rukia, her purple eyes pensive.

"I'm... I'm not sure if I'm completely fit. Aside from my healing sake, all my other skills are for taking lives, not saving them. Additionally, I don't know how I feel about leaving the Stealth Division... We do not even have a Lieutenant yet. The loss of a seated member may do more harm than good but..."

Shuten looked away from the captain, her gaze averted to the sky above them. She once more picked up her sake dish, swirling the clear liquid into a gentle whirlpool. What... What did she want? Fulfilment? A reason to do something aside from stagnate inside of a division that, by all rights, has done no more than stain her hands crimson? Ibiki's words about doing something new came to the woman then. Averting her gaze from the azure sky, Shuten's eyes once more found Rukia's.

"I... I can't give you a definite answer, not yet. But... I've needed a change for a while. Can I keep working with you in the coming days, Captain? So that I may properly understand if this is what I really wish to do; and to understand my feelings. But... I cannot deny, healing and saving lives does warm my heart much more than killing and taking lives."

"If I'm being honest, I'm not so sure I expect any of the divisions to make it through this with the same lineup as when we started. I don't know, call it a hunch. Besides, not to sound too dismissive, but I'm not just interested in people who know how to cast spells. I'd prefer people who are already familiar with the bureaucracy side of being a seated officer."

Shrugging, Rukia took another sip of the drink in her hand, slowly cooling down thanks more to the fresh air than the liquor in her hand. She was a little bit tired of trying to walk on eggshells around people she didn't like, of appeasing people she didn't respect. She was making this offer because she wanted this person working under her. If other people didn't like it, that was their problem.

"I'm not in any rush for an answer, so don't worry about it. Just let me know whenever you decide."

Rukia did have a point. For the squads to remain the same, there would need to be quite a lot of happenstance. The squads are bound to endure a reshuffling due to the recent invasion and upheaval. Shuten simply nodded her head in agreement at the woman's statements. She was completely right, and it was easy for Shuten to see this. But the more difficult thing to accept was a transfer from division to division. Frankly speaking, once again, it was a rather tough decision for Shuten to accept. But, it was an alluring prospect. However, as Shuten was considering the prospects, whether to accept or not accept, Ibiki's advice to the Oni came to her. About trying something new... Additionally, Shuten also realized somewhat that this was a direct offer from a Captain. She hadn't even been offered a new position in the Stealth Division, nor had anyone really. It may be a sixth seat, but Rukia had said Shuten wouldn't get a pay reduction.

With the woman's slender fingers carefully picking her sake dish off the ground, the Suika took another large draft of her sake, perhaps larger than was traditional; but Oni didn't care for such things. With a now empty dish, and her Suikan alcohol tolerance to show for it, Shuten placed the sake dish down and looked towards Rukia. There wasn't a need to rush, no... But nor was there a need to lay stagnant either.

"There may be no need to rush, but... I accept, Captain. I've been stuck, stagnant, where I am, and I'd prefer to try something new; something fulfilling. And... It would be an honor to have you as my captain, Captain Kuchiki."

"Then welcome to 2nd division. I'll handle the paperwork when this shift ends. I'll let my vice captain know, too, so she doesn't get confused."

Not that she expected Morikawa would get thrown by something as straightforward as a change in personnel, but Rukia knew that they were probably about to see some big changes around soon. She wanted paperwork as much as possible to keep track of her division when everything went to hell, if it did like she expected it would.

"Our break is probably over soon. Get ready to wrap up these last rounds, and we can go get something to eat when we're finished. I want to make sure everyone's getting enough sleep."

Not that she herself was, but she didn't need to bring that up.

The acceptance of Shuten's admission into the second division was frankly over as soon as it began. However, the Suika didn't mind the swiftness of it all. Why stall and stutter in the face of times such as these? If everything was to fall apart, if the gotei truly was screwed with the current turn of events, Shuten figured it was best to do what she could for those who were injured while she still could. Frankly speaking, pay wasn't a worry if everything went to pot anyways.

Upon Rukia's words that their break was likely to be over soon, Shuten packed away that sake dish of hers, and took Rukia's from her once she was finished with the alcohol, and otherwise fixed up her gourd full of sake. With some doing, Shuten was more than ready to resume her duties. After all, there was still a long day ahead of them.

"Sounds like a plan, Captain. I just hope you're getting enough sleep yourself... But perhaps that is not my place."

Shuten couldn't help but look upon her new captain's countenance. Her baggy eyes were a signal enough to her lack of sleep, among other things that were likely stressing the woman out. A mental sigh crossed the woman's mind as she looked at her new captain, reflecting on how both the captains she worked under seemed to not care much for the own health state; but the care they extended towards their subordinates was something to admire. Shuten would wait for Rukia to be prepared as well before she would follow the woman to return to their duties for the day. A long day still awaited them both...
