At the mention of kicks, Hayden had internally grimaced, although did his best to not let his distaste show. Though with his actions, it was sort of obvious. His form wasn’t the worst by any means, but with each count, his preference for his upper body showed. Anything that required more than bringing the knee up wasn’t as clean as his punches or strikes. It was all mediocre, revealing to anyone that could notice the drop in quality that his fighting had mostly consisted of his feet planted firmly.

The counts given by Tento were encouraging though. The underling could tell from the energy in his voice that the officer had a level of genuine care for the group they were with. Hayden was glad for it. He had spent enough time under the command of men who didn’t care much during his lifetime. The change in attitude as a shinigami was a welcome one. Although, he supposed that since they had significantly longer life-spans, keeping good relations with those around them was probably preferable.

In his thoughts, he stumbled a bit during a kick, his right foot shifting a little as he wobbled. Though he did manage to save himself from falling over, a little huff leaving his nose as he corrected his posture.

Hayden would not be alone with his internal disapproval. Not everyone had an easy-going acceptance of this part of the training for today, new or not. The choir song about kicks did not come with much of a wait either. With groans people moved into place, others took the quick glance of their seated officer to get hastily into position. Tento knew that not everyone liked kicks. And from sparring…dang sure not good at throwing them out. That was the point of this. To improve. Shinigami had their specialties, in their natural flow, some would never throw a kick out just like some would never even consider casting a kido spell. Regardless, these were the aspects of a Shinigami, and everyone in the combat division needed basic knowledge as well as practice with it. As simple and small this may seem many of them needed it. Especially as fresh members out of school. ‘Fresh’ as one could be after several years of study.

That was that though. Somethings were different. As a member of the 4th division, as a superior officer and mentor by choice. There were things even the easy-going laid-back guy like Tento would not take from his fellow soldiers. Character unbecoming of an officer, problematic apathy, and disciple; even more a clear sign of it. Some of these recruits had that issue and throughout the kicks. Tento took the time to stop his own kicks to walk up and give some tough love to correct themselves in a private volume level. Tento continued his count in between words, a bit of dramatics. Others had their forms lacking, needed some guidance with shifting their body. Finding their flow.

“Hayden”, Tento bellowed out in a calm yet firm voice. A blank face before he walked to the section he was in with a calm face. “Take your time. I know you can do this. Raise your knee up and punch out your leg. Take your breath in from your core and use it. Ah… dont forget to twist too. Not just you Hayden, all of you. I haven’t seen legs so stiff since I was a first year in front of a Captain”.

“In my defense, last time my foot went above my hip like this, I’m pretty sure there were still 13 captains,” He said humorously, not trying to hide his voice, but not projecting it loud enough to be understood well by anyone who wasn’t paying attention. The words were spoken in jest, but they did betray his age to some extent.

Nonetheless, he followed Tento’s words. The statement was simply humor injected into his ability to take his job seriously. A bad habit of his, so he thought, that the shinigami was unable to chase away. Even if others may find it endearing. It wasn’t very many repetitions until the memory of the movement was returning to him. His foot began to grow higher each time. Come out straighter. What once was a stumble in the foot in an attempt to keep balance, had become a slight lurch forward to throw more of his weight into the kick. It still was far from perfect, but he was improving each time. There was indeed hope for him yet.

“Oh, well if that is the case. Maybe we shall reforce the clock. Now is a better time than never. I know you can do it”, Tento said in a gentle stern tone. Be as it may, Hayden pretty much spoke of his lack of development to Tento in his years of service. That was bad enough for some but for Tento it was what it was. But the issue was that Hayden declined. If he did it before, why not now? “You did it then so let's just get you back to that. No excuses!”. Tento said with an enthusiastic pat on the back. As much jest it was, Tento figured there was some truth in them.

With that they were back at ut. And soon Tento found it that Hayden had more than he let himself have as credit. Through repetition it got better. A solid base, fluidity, and agility. “Good good”, Tento said with a nod of his head. His foot coming down from his kick to watch the others. The noticeable gradual improvement from Hayden wasn't something to disregard. It was quite fast and unexpected. Perhaps Tento had took a hasty regard of the man's current state. Soon, everyone was hitting their repetitions with a level that was meeting the standards Tento sought. The tall man watched for a few more minutes before giving a loud clap of his hands to signal the end.

“Great job everyone. Proud of the work and development today. Hit the showers if you need to. If you're hungry, you know the spot for the group lunch. Make sure to hydrate before you get back to work though”. The lines were straight and firm as he spoke. None of the regulars spoke but had plenty of smiles showing they were happy to be done with it. With a loud kai, they responded. Some chose to give a short bow. Formalities. What mattered right now…was the growing sound of hunger in Tento's belly. "If you have the spirit. Come back for the harder session in about four hours".
