Situational Awareness [Yuuki/Moe]
Wed Nov 22, 2023 3:58 pm
KOIZUMI YUUKI | SECOND WIND, FOURTH DIVISION
Yuuki was glad their internship was over. They had been away for nearly a year now—only sporadically returning for important events when their schedule allowed. It was time to regroup and find out what had happened. Sure, they had heard some rumors. One Division member was being a real ruckus-cause-r, and Rio had been promoted to Lieutenant! Well, co-Lieutenant. She'd take that spot no problem, Yuuki mused. But that wasn't the big rumbling they had heard. No, this one didn't even come from Division members—but from the Koizumi themselves.
Yuuki had heard that Lady Shishiyuki—the head of the family had ran a gauntlet through the Division only a week prior. Of course, Shishiyuki won that. Despite Yuuki's like of their squadmates, their money would have been on their relative rather than anyone in the Division... except the Captain. That one would be a toss-up. But out of all the members of the Division, there was one person that Yuuki missed more than any. Yuuki both did and did not get along with most members of the Fouth Division. There was one person that Yuuki thoroughly enjoyed, and that's who Yuuki decided to get the
The two had two things in common—sass and oversized Shikai. And despite her height, it wasn't hard to miss the 4th Division's true bearer of the title of "shortest." "Moe!" Yuuki hopped down from a rooftop—a bad habit they had been constantly scolded about—and landed by the gumball. "I'm actually back. Now. Again. Whatever you want to call it." A quick glance over Moe made a few things catch their medically-trained eye. "Wow, they weren't kidding about Lady Shishiyuki going through the Division... So like, what happened?"

MACHIHARA MOE | The Bubblegum Oni
Moe was quite in her own world when there was a sudden burst of activity before her. One of her squad mates hopping down from the roof caused her to instinctively recoil, half expecting them to attempt (and fail) to jump her, but she stopped short of swinging a wild punch. The voice was strangely familiar, she had heard it before and yet not for a while, so she blinked once, twice, and then let a toothy grin creep across her face.
“Yuuki!” Bouncing forwards, she went for a much more playful if-not-tomboyish punch to her returned friend’s shoulder. “You’re back! Bout time too, with all the changes going on round here I was beginning to wonder if you ever would.”
She had been the new girl in the barracks when Yuuki had left, now she was the grizzled veteran. Throwing herself into every fight with that same reckless abandon that she had when she first stepped in the door, Moe had earned herself a fair few scars and bruises that he might be able to pick up on with a practiced eye, but perhaps the most telling of marks was one that he could only glimpse at. Bandages peeked out from under her shihakusho, wrapping around her chest to cover the area on her back where Shishiyuki had nearly punched her. It was quite humiliating, to have been felled without even landing a blow of her own, but that didn’t mean she would ever hide her shame.
“I ain’t the best person to be asking I’m afraid.” Moe guffawed, as she rubbed the back of her head sheepishly. “Didn’t exactly get much of a chance to talk to her before she put me through the floor, but I did catch her talking about some kind of assessment. Something to do with Officer Kurata, apparently.”

KOIZUMI YUUKI | SECOND WIND, FOURTH DIVISION
Yuuki would gladly accept the shoulder-punch from Moe. It was endearing to think that she could land a good, solid punch. But beyond that, Yuuki enjoyed banter—even when it turned physical—with Moe. There was just something about her that made sure Yuuki stayed in a good mood. "If I had stayed away any longer, I think I'd come back and see the barracks itself in a cast. I heard that things haven't exactly been peaceful..."
Yuuki attempted to get information from Moe about the lack of peace—starting with what had Moe still wearing bandages. "An assessment...? Man, if she was assessing the 4th's hand-to-hand skills, I think we'd easily fail based on her standards... I can only carry the Division so much." Yuuki shook their head—even though they were far from the strongest or even most skilled in hand-to-hand combat, they were one of the premiere examples of someone who focused on it in the 4th. "I'm just glad you don't seem to be more hurt. I saw, like, one demonstration from Lady Shishiyuki years ago and let's just say when she got to me, I'd've thrown my hands up and said 'no thanks.' She's not one I'd want to fight."
"You mentioned Officer Kurata... I had heard some things about her as well... Is she as thick-headed and violent as I've been told? I gotta know if I need to pack a second trauma bag if I'm deployed with her..."

MACHIHARA MOE | The Bubblegum Oni
"Well peace ain't exactly the Death Division's style, is it? If we're left waiting around without a challenge for too long then our blades'll go dull, that's what the Captain says anyway. Oh! Have you met the new boss yet? I mean, maybe you have, officer business and all that, but she's a pretty big deal you know?"
As per usual, Moe's mouth ran as fast as ever and it certainly seemed like no injuries were slowing her down. It was a part of her upbeat charm, or so some people had said before she slapped them upside their heads lest they start thinking she was some kind of mascot. But maybe she was compensating because she couldn't help Yuuki much when it came to matters concerning Shishiyuki. There was little she had seen before it happened and even less that she remembered afterwards.
"You won't catch me backing down if she comes knocking again! I'll give her some Machihara thunder next time, for sure, and I've been training hard to make sure no one gets me like that again. So don't worry, you can stand behind me and be proud." Her earnest bravado had certainly not changed at all since last they spoke, still the little girl believed quite adamantly that she could and would take on the world and the prospect of failure remained an alien concept.
"As for Officer Kurata, yeah I've heard people say stuff like that but I also never saw it with my own eyes. To me, she's always pushing herself to her limits, and I respect that kinda attitude but perhaps it rankled a few people the wrong way. Regardless, she's my squadmate and if I hear people throwing shade her way then they're also throwing shade our way."

KOIZUMI YUUKI | SECOND WIND, FOURTH DIVISION
Yuuki cringed at the whole "Death Division" thing. Even when that started, they thought it was a bit too on-the-nose—like naming a restaurant with a pun about the food they served. That decision was above their paygrade though, and trying to challenge that moniker would be a waste of time and energy. "Nuh'uh. I haven't had much of a chance to talk to the new Captain; I didn't get to stay for the full ceremony of her getting sworn in and whatever changes she wanted to make." Maybe there should be a need to meet the Captain one of these days. Then again, if the rumors were true... Eh, there was only so much that rumors could affect Yuuki. So many rumors persisted about Yuuki themself that it was only fair that they ignore some about others.
Moe was, truly, a bundle of refreshing energy. It brought back some of that competitive spark they'd missed during their time away. Doctors, especially the ones for nobles, are dour and a little too practical for Yuuki's taste. Bedside manners were a waste of time. Tell the patient they were a dumbass for trying a stunt! If people aren't told that bluntly, they just don't listen! "Hopefully there isn't a next time, but if there is, I'll be there to patch you up after your victory. Well, our victory. I don't stand behind anyone."
Moe's perspective on Shura was an interesting one. It contradicted some of the other things said, but, of course, those were mostly from people outside of the Division. Putting a finger to their chin, Yuuki began to think hard with closed eyes. The majority of those rumors were from outside of the Division—and some were even from outside of the Gotei, as word had spread to the nobility. Looking like they were focusing to the point of a headache, Yuuki spoke up. "The combat specialists always have had a bit of a bad rep. I heard back in Zaraki's time, people thought they were basically a gang of thugs. But I know a few from that time. They might wear fundoshi and talk about manliness when hammered, but thugs they are not."
With a sigh, Yuuki let the tension drop. "I gotta stop listening to gossip from shitty sources." Pulling out a notebook and short pencil from an unseen pocket, Yuuki gleamed at Moe. "Which is why I'll bug you again. So outside of the new Captain, the drama with the 3rd seat, and the attack from Lady Shishiyuki, what else have I missed? What juicy details have escaped my grasp?" As always, Yuuki was a bit too eager to get the "scoop" on recent events...

MACHIHARA MOE | The Bubblegum Oni
Moe's eyebrows raised upwards almost comically as Yuuki cringed at the mention of their division name. She was all about division pride, after all, it had defined who she was these past few months. So her face scrunched up a little but she didn't want to kick up a fuss, perhaps they were simply not quite used to the term yet. It had taken a while to grow on a few other people too.
"Well she's hard as nails, and won't tolerate weakness, so you should get by just fine." Her eyes positively twinkled as he mentioned a second round, that livewire energy unable to be contained even as her body still healed. "Oh, there'll be a second time. I won't stand for anyone looking down on me or our squad, so even if I can't beat her yet I'll clobber some respect into her tooth and nail if I have to."
If people had once thought the division was just a bunch of thugs then Moe could not help but wish that she could have seen those days, they sounded mighty fun and as good a place as any to crack some skulls in the name of the Gotei. She had heard plenty of people talking about Captain Zaraki though, another that she wanted to meet so that she could eventually surpass, but that was a long way down the line. For now, she had her goals and her Captain would help her get there, she was sure of it.
"Pfft, don't trust anything said out of Division, Yuuki. That's a rookie mistake, and the Captain won't like it if she gets wind of silly rumours like that. But, uh, as far as actual news goes. Well, we got a new Vice-Captain, kinda. Rio Shihoin. She joined the division to hang out with me but the Captain sensed that she had some strength to her and Vice Captain Hanako has been taking a bit of an extended leave lately. So I guess you could say I'm responsible for us getting a Shihoin on staff." Moe puffed out her chest as a smug smile spread across her face. "And there's also been all this Africa business. But that's hardly gossip really, it's just the job we're likely gonna be stuck dealing with."
