○ Delicate Facade: Kiyotsumi is a reserved and unassuming girl, she isn't shy in any sense of the word but she doesn't like to be the centre of attention. She talks softly, with a quiet voice and a polite vocabulary that sounds a little above her station. This is all a deception that she has carefully created though, to allow her to pose as a normal girl now that she is a student at the prestigious Shin'ō Academy. In reality, she is far from the fragile maiden that she tries to portray.

○ Ferocious Temper: In truth, Sumi has deep-seated anger issues that stem back to her origins in the Rukongai and the challenges that came with such a harsh upbringing. She contains this fury behind her pretty disguise but, when pushed, she can explode into violent fits of rage. Physical violence is certainly something that falls well within her wheelhouse, and she is more than capable of handling herself when such situations arise.

○ Reforming Urchin: There are a lot of issues buried beneath the surface, but Sumi is genuinely trying to improve herself. After a tumultuous life before coming to the academy, she's finally in a position where every day doesn't have to be a battle between life and death. She's done a lot of stuff that she isn't proud of and got her hands a lot messier than most girls ever should, so now there's finally a chance for her to try putting at least a little of that in the past.

There are many districts within the Rukongai that are known for having a terrible reputation, where gangs own the streets and crime is the sole export. It was in one of these districts that Kiyotsumi was reborn, though she would not come to choose that name as her own for many years. The girl was not fortunate enough to have a family of her own, abandoned as she was, and spent her infantile years bouncing around various organisations scrounging for the very least amount of necessities that a soul could survive on. It was the fleeting kindness of strangers that kept her alive during this dark origin, but it would never last.

Any semblance of goodwill had dried up by the time she was old enough to scrape by on her own, so she was left to the streets to see if she would still persist. The girl learned a lot of lessons in those first few months on her own. Learning not to trust anyone came first, then how to protect herself, and then how to run. It was not hard to get by on the fringes of society if you were left to your own devices, it was unfortunate then that this was rarely the case. Whatever you were able to take for yourself, another would covet. If they brought friends then the only move was to ditch and run.

It was inevitable that an urchin like her would become embroiled with a local gang eventually, there was simply no other way to survive. It was not a straightforward thing though, to climb up the hierarchy of a gang, as she did not have a build that inspired confidence. She was slight, dainty, and entirely malnourished. So, instead of brute force, she had to use her head and her wiles to earn enough respect to get by. Fortunately, as fate would have it, she was a cut above many of her peers in those regards. They underestimated her at every turn, and she made sure to claim their spoils as her own whenever she could. When they let their guard down, she was not above slipping a knife into their backs so that she could stand a little taller. Death had been lingering around her since she was a child, it had long since grown numb to her and even taking lives could not draw blood from the stone.

So, by guile and cunning, Kiyotsumi climbed the lowest rungs of her gang. Then moved on to a bigger gang when the opportunity arose for her to rise above her station. That didn't end too well for her old bunch, but she was hardly the type to lose sleep over it. It made her life just a little bit easier, after all. Suddenly she didn't have to struggle for food every day, it was now a different kind of struggle. The struggle to gain more than she had ever been offered. Her backwater origins would not support this life, so she was moved to a new district where the grass was a little greener and the criminal underbelly was thriving.

Still a teenage girl, but now a thief and assassin, Kiyotsumi cheated and stole her way to a better life within the gang. Jewellery was her common target, for she both desired pretty things and knew their value, and in time she came to be known as the Diamond Cutter for her actions. Unfortunately, she was also finally beginning to develop something of a conscience. Hardly enough to stop her, but she was acutely aware that this was not a profession that people lived long lives doing. So she privately began to look for a way to escape.

That was what led her to the Seireitei, travelling a long way from her old home and leaving everything she had once known behind her. She wasn't exactly a promising candidate, her spiritual pressure was pretty modest, but she did have a few other things going for her at least. There was a new life for her to claim, one where she was no longer viewed as a vagrant.


○ Backalley Jeweller: Whilst she would like to forget most of her time in the harshest parts of the Rukongai, Kiyotsumi studied her most valuable trade on those shadowy streets. From the moment she was kicked out and forced to survive on her own, she had to learn how to protect herself. A dagger was her only comfort in those dark times, so she forced herself to learn how to use it well. It could easily be hidden in her garments, buried in her hair, stowed up a sleeve, or anywhere else that a target might not be looking. Then it was a matter of knowing where to strike, learning which blows would kill cleanly to avoid leaving a bloodstain on her outfit or how best to bring down a larger opponent by severing muscles with tactile strikes. These were lessons she taught herself over years of living rough, and she still holds true to them now.

The rumour soon became that Sumi could cut the diamonds from a person's neck without them even noticing, though such encounters often ended with her blade a little redder than it started. She earned her moniker of "Diamond Cutter" for her blade work in those teenage years, for she made her money by taking the jewels from those that fell afoul of her handiwork. But most students at the academy think it has something to do with her family owning a jewellery store, a lie that she propagated when her nickname became more common knowledge.

○ Keen Eye, Quick Hands: Her skill with the dagger helped her survive, but it was Sumi's sharp reactions and nimble fingers that allowed her to prosper. Picking pockets was what allowed her to rise above her station and find some semblance of comfort. She's a thief through and through, lighter on her feet than any of her peers and able to move like an acrobat when the situation calls for it.
