Anything Less [ Kokoko x Shishiyuki ]

Kokoko finds it hard to believe that the head of the Koizumi was in need of assistance, yet here she was, on her way to meet up with Shishiyuki to do only lord knows what. To give some context, today was supposed to be a today that Kokoko was to spend with her father training and honing her skills in Meikyoku Ho, however, upon entering the dojo she was sent right back out by him. He seemed frustrated at something, with her mother in the corner of the room with an ashamed look on her face. By this point in her life, Kokoko knew better than to ask questions and just left without saying a word.

Which was why she was now lending a hand to the head, to act like somewhat of a teacher to the head. Yeah, that sounds pretty lame compared to what she could have been doing, but to Kokoko this was a big deal. Before making it to her destination, she took the time to spruce herself up and look nice. Makeup, perfume, a nice outfit, the whole shebang. Kokoko had to approach this as if it were an interview to become Shishiyuki's next pupil; she had to be presentable. Which was odd, all things considered, since the meeting was with the intention to teach the other party. But anyways, now that she's dolled up, Kokoko would finally approach her idol.

"H-hello? I was told you sent for a hand. Sorry that you got me, my father was busy with another matter, unfortunately. If you don't mind me asking, what exactly did you need me for?" She spoke softly, as if not to impose on whatever train of thought the woman was having prior to Kokoko's entrance. It's true, she was there with the best intentions in mind, but how exactly she was to convey that eluded her.

KOIZUMI SHISHIYUKI

For Shishiyuki, knowing the basic principles of each of the 108 sects of Ichibyou Senkuka was not simply a matter of being able to best them in combat should the need arise. Of course, that was the purpose of the tradition, but she had made it into something less threatening in nature. It was, instead, her primary method of keeping an eye on each of the up and coming potential heads, to hopefully help them grow up a bit more well-adjusted than the family traditions tended to enforce.

"Thank you for your time, Kokoko. I apologize if your schedule was interrupted for my benefit, but I am glad that you have come."

Shishiyuki herself was dressed in her typical attire, not yet having committed to any proper training for the day. If she had, she certainly wouldn't be in a social situation as this. She offered a small smile of welcome, gesturing to the seat at the table across from herself.

"I wished to speak about your school, and your progress as the successor."

Humbly, Kokoko would wave her hands in front of her. "Oh no! You're fine. It didn't seem like I was going to get much done today anyway..." A weak laugh would escape her lips as Kokoko would slither out from behind the door and meekly take the seat across from Shishiyuki. Her shoulders were raised and her hand together, trying to squeeze Kokoko into the smaller size possible; confidence was definitely lacking and it wasn't hard to tell. "But yeah, it's technically not my school, yet. And at the current rate, it may be another hundred years before my father passes and leaves the school to me." The mentioning of the inevitable death of her father was dropped casually and move passed like it wasn't even said. This was mainly because the two of them had a very, very strong dislike for one another, to the point that he would rather die before willingly handing over Meikyoku Ho to his son.

"Oh! Unless you meant to ask about the style...specifically..." As the realization was made Kokoko would trail her voice off, a half-hearted attempt to not bring attention to her possible stupidity.

KOIZUMI SHISHIYUKI

"I know that it is not yet your school, but it will be, given the rights of succession. I think it is more important to speak with those who will lead it into the future, particularly given the changes that have been seen in the Soul Society."

Pouring a cup of tea for her guest as a matter of courtesy, despite her being rather substantially above Kokoko in any social hierarchy, Shishiyuki maintained her polite composure, though in a more casual manner than she tended to with the older generations.

"I am curious as to your intentions when the school does pass into your hands, even if you do not believe it will happen any time soon."

"Thank you." She spoke softly and quietly, to not give much attention to the fact or anything but to acknowledge the gift regardless. The question posed was something that she had pondered often but rarely thought to much about. It's not like her father was particularly old yet, and the chances of dying were incredibly low that it was a distant future. While the two of them didn't really see eye to eye, Kokoko still loved him for raising her and somewhere deep down wished that they could connect. But alas, that ship has long since sailed and the future is all she has to look forward to now.

"Hm." A finger was brought up to her chin, something to keep her hands busy while she thought. "I guess I'd make some reforms with how we do things, mainly the membership policy. There are a lot of things I think should change, such as the high barrier of entry for students. Me being the only one, I do think that there are some out there who can wield Meikyoku Ho for good. Though when I voice this... I'm often seen as naive." A sudden silence became her. Memories of her father berating her would shoot to the front of her mind and quickly shut her up, much as he did. "Why? Is there something you think should change?"

KOIZUMI SHISHIYUKI

Now that was a quite modern outlook indeed. In a way, Shishiyuki was impressed that Kokoko would be so bold as to suggest a change in policy like that directly to the family head. After all, the nature of the 108 sects of the Koizumi was to shroud their mastery of hakuda in further veils of secrecy, to keep even each other from knowing the full truth of their skill.

"Would you intend to teach others of your branch to wield the style as well? Adopt members of those branches which lack one of the 108 sects? Or, Kokoko, do you mean to say that you would wish to teach Meikyoku Ho to those outside the Koizumi altogether?"

There was no condemnation in Shishiyuki's voice, though of course her voice conveyed quite clearly the gravity of the conversation. She was very genuinely curious what the girl might say in response to that, and in all truth, even she did not know how she might react to any given answer.

It's not like she forgot about the rules. Of course, teaching an outsider would not only be controversial but borderline get her removed. Despite how much she was...into Midori, Kokoko wasn't exactly willing to follow in the woman's footsteps. Bravery can only do so much good.

"Well, no, but there's a precedent I want to dissolve. At the moment, there are two members of the sect. Before, it was just my father. Before that, his father. Well... I don't think I'd keep it family exclusive? I don't think there's any rule barring me from adopting, correct? In which case, why keep it to just one? I think with the amount of time I can live for, 3 or 4 would be fine." Yeah, that's it. It took a while for Kokoko to reach where she wanted to be but eventually she reached there.

Under her breath, though, she added another comment. "It's not like I'll be bearing children of my own." It was said in an offhanded matter, addressing the elephant than shooting it dead. It was a hope that it would not become the next topic of conversation.

"You are correct. There is no issue in adopting a child to be your successor, so long as they take the Koizumi name. But given it is adoption, I would hope you are not doing it simply for the sake of a successor, hm? That is a concern of family, after all."

Shishiyuki certainly understood the concept of needing to adopt a successor. After all, the thought had crossed her own mind as well, after a thousand years without so much as a suitor being worth her attention. And now that she had found a romantic partner, it had only once again been brought to the forefront of her mind.

"Do bear in mind, however, that there can only ever be one master of Meikyoku Ho. Only one of your children can grow to be the master, and in turn, they may only choose a single child to take that position. Maintaining too many others in the dojo after succession breeds strife, jealousy. I do not wish to dissuade you, far from it in fact. I simply wish to remind you of the realities."

"Of course, there can only be one master. That doesn't mean there can't be multiple students, however. The only thing that really stops this from happening is the hassle of having to juggle multiple kids." There was a pause as her hand would find its way on her chin. "In a perfect world, if they're all my children, then teaching each one of them staggered would be the best..." It was sort of clear that Kokoko's mind had started to wander and, if not for her meekness, would have probably ended up in a rambling tangent. There was a moment of this before she snapped back to the conversation that was originally being had.

"Oh but, they can fight among themselves for the seat of master. That isn't a foreign concept to the Koizumi." A shred of confidence poked its head. It was just enough that this statement would be followed by a smug smirk. one that you would have to look for to notice.

KOIZUMI SHISHIYUKI

Shishiyuki found Kokoko's meandering, vocalized thought processes almost admirable in a way, simply because it was something that few Koizumi would necessarily be willing to do. Of course, she did consider the possibility that it was only a method of misdirection, and she kept it in mind as the two of them continued to speak. Shishiyuki was all too familiar with her family's efforts at duplicity.

"That much is true, but I think you and I both understand that just because it is not foreign, that does not make it something we ought to always encourage."

Then again, Shishiyuki held this whole matter as one perhaps more personal than anyone might have known. She had never once been allowed to face a true challenge, even from her own sister. It seemed fate had ordained to simply hand her everything.
