An Overcast Day Leaves No Shadows LT5vPYw

Okami Kuro, the Captain of the Gotei United's Fifth Division. Stealth Force. Unfortunately, that was all she knew about the man she was now going to meet. Either he was the secretive sort, or the Gotei was being more selfish with their information since her botched meeting with the Captain Commander herself.

Sylvia breathed, and a gentle wind picked up around her. She was dressed in the same dark blue suit and booties that she had worn to see Frau Kyoraku-Hayden, with her himmlische anzug worn in the form of a long white coat with blue accents and gold borders. This time, however, she was bereft of the glove that had covered her right hand.

Was it a malfunction of the device, or had she exceeded its capacity to contain her power without realizing it? She wasn't sure yet, but without the tool, she felt... more free than before. She had to devote no insignificant portion of her mental ability to restraining her powers, lest they run amuck and inadvertently pull her into Letzt Stil without her doing, but even so, it wasn't a bad experience, overall.

It was becoming easier to do over time, as well.

Lead by her Shinigami guard and guide, the Vandenreich Captain strode by his side with renewed confidence. Even if the commander had been less than agreeable, she was sure she could still get useful information on Fräulein Montero's actions in Beijing, and call her diplomatic mission a success.

She was gestured to stop, and waited patiently while her guide addressed the Captain hidden from her view. "Captain Okami, sir. The Quincy from the Vandenreich is here to see you."

Captain Kuro Okami

Deep, languid gestures of conscious swept from one end of the man's vision, to the other. And yet, his head did not move. In fact, his head could not even be seen. For those who existed within the realm of Shadows, bodies were simple reflections of their norm. His gaze shifted along the Gotei; from the far reaches of Seireitei, back to his the barracks of his own squad. He traced out the shadows of those whom he knew; students, members of his squad, the various Captains who were currently in the Gotei… He could trace each and every one of them out as they moved about. The shadows of carts, being moved along the ground, the ones pushing them planting one foot in front of the other.

Shadow. Unfamiliar.

The Quincy had been brought to his office. Perhaps the most striking thing about it was how it was lit; there was no consistent lighting. Upon entering, the guide had lit four of the candles in the room, leaving them to burn. It was difficult to see much farther than a few feet in front of her face. For some reason, this was how the Stealth Force Captain kept his quarters. Perhaps she was expecting for him to be seated within that darkness; it was difficult to see much farther than the end of his desk.

…But that one is familiar.

The Shinigami captain's body slowly emerged from the shadow, directly behind her. There was no sense, no presence. If anything, only the feeling of the wind hitting her back from behind would indicate that someone else had drawn near her. The man's gaze was pointed downward as the shadows retreated from his skin, permitting more and more of him into the world of dusk and dawn. A single hand reached out, patting the guide on her shoulder. "…" Kuro and the Stealth Force division member were both silent, her guide's head bowing before retreating. The doors creaked as the entryway closed behind her, and then Syvlia was left alone with the white-haired man.

"………Quincy." The single word came from his throat, a dragging, rasping sound. His head slowly tilted up to face her. The candles flickered, and in that moment, she would get a clear look of his face.

His eyes were hollow, dead. Any light they had once held had been replaced with some kind of… void. His expression was listless, uncommitted. Above his left eye, she could make out an angry-red scar, in the shape of a star. The scar went straight down his face, and that was when she would be able to smell it.

The Captain was covered with the smell of blood. It had dried long ago, but the metallic scent remained, lightly emanating from his body. He wore a Captain's haori, but the color was all wrong. It was a russet, dirty brown. The pale white it should have maintained had been lost, long ago.

Those blank eyes looked right at her, the man's arms limply resting on either side of his body. After several moments, his eyes widened just a bit, and at last he spoke. The rasp was much stronger, now, grating at the walls, at his desk, at her ears.

"…What…do you want?..."

She couldn't fault the Captain's sense of the dramatic. It was effective, and a little frightening in a way that reminded her of old horror movies. Reishi flowed through the Quincy's eyes, and with the activation of her Himmelsblick, she felt the choking darkness alleviate some, but the darkness of the room was a different thing from the darkness of the Earth. Her attempt to peer through it only seemed to make the shadows that much larger.

Sylvia held down her squeak, but stiffened and jumped a little at the sudden reveal of a man's presence from behind her. She did her best to still her racing heart while the Captain and his subordinate communicated all too silently, then swallowed and cleared her throat when she was finally addressed.

"I-I'll..." Her voice squeaked a little, and she cleared her throat again. After the emotional storm that was her meeting with the Commander, the Stealth Force Captain's unnerving appearance was getting to her. "I'll be brief."

The Quincy Captain straightened her posture, and reapplied her air of confidence and respect. It helped her to feel more in control, at least. "Zee Vandenreich vould like to hear your side of zee story: apout your fight vith Fräulein Sofia Montero in Beiching."

Captain Kuro Okami

Dramatic.

Kuro Okami knew what the word meant, but would have no idea why it would apply to him. His stone-cold gaze was focused on her completely now, the next thing he had to deal with before he had to go to work again. …That's good. Her being brief would make things easier on the Shadow Shinigami. He did not enjoy having to deal with people longer than necessary.

The woman's posture changed, drawing herself up.

Kuro's mannerisms were completely unaffected by it.

The same stone-cold gaze, the same posture with his arms held limply at his sides. Speaking to a ghost would have garnered a better reaction. Perhaps out of disrespect, perhaps out of apathy, but the Shinigami did not appear to regard her at all. "…in where…? Speak quieter. I cannot understand you." He told her, bluntly. The Captain's tone did not hold a bit of malice within it. His request, while deadpan, was in good faith that she could understand that he was confused. He did not know what a 'Fraulien' was, or 'Beiching'. Had the Vandenreich sent someone to address a Shinigami Captain who was incapable of communicating properly?

"…Sofia Montero…" The rasping voice cracked, the Shinigami stepping past her as he walked back over to his desk. He gripped the handle, pulling it all the way out with a crack. Kuro was not gentle toward his office equipment. Kuro removed the folder from the desk, tossing it on the table.

He then reached under his desk.

click.

Above her head, light began to pour from an electrical source. While dim, it did make it possible to see things much clearer. When Kuro's figure came back into sight, she could see that he was now wearing a peculiar pair of… sunglasses. Where they had come from was unclear. They were black as night, without any kind of feature or definition.

"…" The man was silent, fishing through the file. Eventually, the last page he was interested in came out. The sheaf of papers were placed in front of him, and his lips moved down into a frown. His gaze turned back to Sylvia. The slow breathing he released was the only sign that he was more than a corpse, looking at her. Or perhaps he was like a predator, going completely still before attacking its prey.

"…Are you her ally? …The Witch's."

Sylvia flinched at the suddenness of the light from overhead, and shielded her eyes while they adjusted to the new conditions. While the room was better lit now, the view of the captain was none less off-putting. She wondered if it was all an act, or if, like Hollow, Shinigami were prone to such wild personalities due to being dead.

She didn't speak a word of such thoughts aloud, of course.

"My apologies." The Quincy cleared her throat, and took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Her accent had gotten the better of her without her realizing, what with her distraction caused by the captain's appearance. "In Beijing, on Halloveen, vu fought vith Sofia Montero of zee Vandenreich, I am told."

She paused for a moment to contemplate her answer to his question. "Fraulein Montero is no longer vith us, und ve vish to handle her betrayel ourselves. She is no longer ein ally to zee Vandenreich, but she is schtill ein Quincy. Ve vish to see her answer for her actions.

"Tovards that goal, I vould like to hear apout your fight vith her. Did sche mention anyzing about Schadowfall, in particular?"
