Let's Revisit Some Things [Private/Hakuyou]
Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:13 pm
LIANA UNOHANA
"Alright then, we're done. Class is dismissed--remember to practice! Practicing is the number one way to master a skill. A human a long time ago once said, 'I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.' Keep that in mind!"
A bustle of students, all shinigami graduated from the academy already, were packing their notes and heading for the door. Liana was hosting a graduate course in kido, though in different semesters she's hosted many other subjects, including all the fundamentals. She stayed at the front of the class, with the exit in the back. Rows of seats were before her in a lecture-hall configuration, each row forward dropping half a foot down or so.
While Liana wiped the board clean, she waited for somebody to stay after and ask questions. There was always at least one person.
When she turned around, there was... well, there was one person, but Liana didn't recognise them. And Liana memorised all her students' faces.
"Hello, sir; may I help you?"

Hakuyou Shiba | Shinigami of the Silk Road
Hakuyou Shiba was a man of many things, some better than others, but one of those things was an astute student. In all his time within the West Branch or East Branch he made it a habit to remain sharp in his skill, trying to gain information as best he could. A noble mind was one of the things needed to be an exemplar, and to possess such a mind required a voracious appetite for self improvement. So he'd have made some inquiries for how a man in his position may sharpen and refine skills which needed it.
He had come to learn Shino Academy had progressed to a point to suit his needs. So with that being said he'd find his way to the school, having been directed to the current Kido captain for her universal skill in shinigami abilities. The tall amber eye'd male would walk into the room as the class ended, when she turned around to greet him. He'd offer a stoic bow before standing at his full six feet, six inches. His hand resting on his gun belt to address it before speaking.
"Hello, Liana-san; I apologize for the sudden disturbance. My name is Shiba Hakuyou, I've recently returned to the Gotei from a few hundred years trip to a location called West Branch. You may have began, or read, my report of it." The man would explain carrying that almost objective voice, if it wasn't for the constant stream of earnestness in his voice.
"I am reacquiring, and sharpening my skills. Considering things have changed drastically, I wish to improve myself- for my family and to secure a captaincy." The man would offer a thin smile, a small thing but real. The idea of returning to the academy did... invigorate him.
"Of course, I apologize once again if I have found the wrong person."

LIANA UNOHANA
Admittedly, Liana was surprised by the sudden appearance of the hulking man. That said, what drew her eyes even more was the firearm--a rare weapon in Soul Society, but a common tool in the Living Realm. It brought to her mind the idea that perhaps this person was from the Seventh Division, and they decided to purchase, or maybe through some other means acquire, the gun for their own use. That presumption was soon cast away--his introduction let her know exactly who she was, and where he acquired the gun.
"Ah, Shiba-san, how nice to meet you."
Liana reflected the polite bow before continuing.
"It's no trouble at all, the disturbance. I was simply finishing up with a class just now. I'm a big fan of your report--if I might say, it was quite fascinating. Unfortunately, I didn't quite have the time to finish the whole thing--you were rather extensive with it. When I find the time, however, I'm excited to continue it."
Then, he explained his reason for being here. Once again, Liana was a surprised, though she supposed it made some sense. She was familiar with his background.
"I see. That is rather noble of you, Shiba-san. I am flattered that you would come to me, and I would be more than willing to help. I love teaching, personally, which is why I volunteer here at Shiba Academy. I can't promise that I will be able to prepare you for captaincy, let alone expediently, but as with everything I will do my best. Might I ask, what is it precisely that you are looking to work on?"
Liana returned a polite and thin smile, though she typically had one on to begin with.

Hakuyou Shiba | Shinigami of the Silk Road
"All I could ask if you try your utmost, and you have already assured me of that. The rest, lies upon me the student, Unohana-sensei." The man would reply in kind expressing a genuine intent to learn. His head bow'd in respect for a moment, despite being her senior in age. She would be his senior in the fields he needed to sharpen over time. But he'd none the less speak to her.
"Truthfully, I'd like an overview of all the core fundamentals. I believe I am have some skill in Kido and Zanjutsu, with acceptable results in Shunpo, but I certainly lack in Hakada." The man would reply without hiding anything approaching it from an almost clinical view, approaching her to within a reasonable range. No point in talk from across the room. Once he arrived he'd add on.
"Of course, I know asking such a thing is time consuming and would best be done if an assessment of my skills were made by yourself academically."

LIANA UNOHANA
Liana let out an amused and flattered giggle when being called Unohana-sensei. She was called that by most of her students, both younger and older, but despite her status and experience, Liana was still fairly young. Most people weren't aware given the way she carried herself, and the prowess she displayed in the many fields. Nevertheless, it was always an interesting thing, to find people much older than her defer to her the title 'sensei'. It was affirming, and offered a pleasant feeling of acknowledgement.
"Thank you for your seriousness, Shiba-san. You are correct, it should be easier for me to assess your skill more directly. I have some time, now that I've finished this class. If you are available, would you like to be tested right now? Otherwise, I'm content with finding another date to do so. We can go over plenty more than just your Hakuda skills for the test, if you'd like, so we can estimate where you are with all fundamentals as a whole."

"I would enjoy that very much, Unohana-sensei." The man would offer a bow of his head in thanks, defaulting to her judgement on such a matter. "I would think exploring my fundamentals as a whole would be ideal. Shall you lead the way, sensei?" The man would ask her as his head came back up.
While their communication was very relaxed and formal, he appreciated she wasn't shocked at his desire to learn. A healthy appetite for knowledge and practice often could make up for lack of skill, and was key to maintaining a noble mind and heart. To become lax, or rely upon his title, would be tandem to accepting the disgrace which was thrown upon his family. So with that settled a thin smile came onto his lips, that small fire of hope within his heart.. grew.

LIANA UNOHANA
"Of course. Just give me a bit to tidy the room a bit before we go."
Liana went about finishing her tasks, this time using kido. She preferred to do all these chores by hand, it felt more connected to the actual work to do so. Plus, Retsu always drilled chores into her to be done by hand so that, if there were no easier methods available, she'd know how to clean a place with the most minimal of tools. By now it had become a habit to continue on that way. At the same time, Liana didn't want to have her newest student waiting on her for too long.
The woman waved her hand, and three small torrents of energy gathered about, concentrating and manifesting into three solid forms--one humanoid, two mammalian. If Hakuyou could tell, he'd notice that structurally speaking the three manifestations were types of kidou.
The humanoid form went about organising the desk, wiping away raised surfaces, and gathering paperwork. One of the mammalian forms, like raccoon, scurried about picking up any trash and debris left on the floor. The last form, like a squirrel, jumped from table to table wiping them away. Meanwhile, Liana was humming to a tune of a recent song popularised in Japan, Earth. She did spent quite some time there for the past six months, after all.
Once finished, she bowed to Hakuyou once more.
"Thank you for waiting, Shiba-san. Now, we can depart. We'll be headed towards the training facility. With other students, normally we would go to the outdoor training ground, but in recognition of your strength, we will need the facility so as to not endanger anything around us."
Then, Liana exited the lecture hall if Hakuyou was in tow, following next to her. Behind them would be the three humanoid forms, still manifested. When they'd pass a trash can, the raccoon form dropped any of the trash in its mouth or hands into it. The humanoid was carrying paperwork in its arms. While walking through the halls on the way to the training facility, Liana spoke up.
"I'm curious, Shiba-san. If you're comfortable with answering, of course. What was Reverse London like? I know you wrote about it in your report, but it was more formal. I'd like to know more about the experience, what the culture was like, and about these dragons. From what you wrote, they were quite diverse, in shape and personality--some looked nothing like the dragons we think of."

Hakuyou Shiba | Shinigami of the Silk Road
Hakuyou's expert kido skills allow'd him to gaze at the summons, for lack of better words, and immediately brought aware of their nature. But he held so many questions in this regard, in no way kido he's seen before. As he saw her prepare such thing he made mental notes, regarding the flow of energy or even the maintenance of such a type of spell. Did it run of it's own energy, was it maintain through a connection, etc? As they arrived at they walked to their destination he'd offer a smile of some humbleness.
"I am happy you answer your questions, Sensei. I must admit the culture was vastly different than what we have within the soul society. While many of the premises was the same, such as a governing organization, they adopted more of a western philosophy. Democratic councils, promotion through merit than one's birth, and what not." The man would pause for a moment as if grasping for the right words. As he rested a hand on his gun belt he spoke once more.
"One's birth was not the end all, but it mattered. As for the dragons, yes we hold a more symbiotic relationship. Dragons are creatures which we try to protect, cultivate. They can be viewed as pets, or perhaps livestock. Their sentience are there, and at times it isn't. Wing Bind, the organization which saw over it all; was mostly relegated to two branches. The Conversation and Protection Agency which as it's names implied made such dragons where protected; and the other being Sabers. They hunted corrupted dragons, dragons who ate humans or looked to do harm." The man paused.
"I have held positions within both, they've been keeping to themselves with the reopening of relations. Trying to adapt themselves. They wish to stay out of the earth conflicts I hear." He'd explain as the sound of his shoes seemed to keep even pace with her own, before finally shifting amber eyes down to her.
"I do have a question myself, your kido work is impressive. I've never seen Kido constructed in such a way, the flow of energy being masterful even. I wasn't able to discern the connections of their energy off first glance, but I have to assume the stability of their connections come from a connect to you; autonomous to a degree but relying upon a host- that being you. Remarkable, I'd love to talk about the specifics of such Kido once day; perhaps even mimic it if you find my skills worthy enough."

LIANA UNOHANA
"Interesting. With the changes of culture in the Soul Society thus far, and the changes implemented by Abalia, it must be rather convenient for you that the same ideology is beginning to take root here as well. Or, is it more difficult for you, that the Soul Society you knew is much different to what it is now?"
Once in a while, while walked forward, Liana peaked into the classrooms to see their states. If there was no-one in the rooms, another racoon form would briefly manifest behind her and scurry in, running out with its hands and mouth full of trash to throw away.
"I must ask, then, what classifies a dragon? If they are such a wide and varied species, what trait makes them a dragon--like how certain common points distinguish a mammal from a bird, or a Shinigami from an Iramasha."
All this information about dragons gave Liana much to think about. To a degree, perhaps if her shikigami had more autonomy and didn't rely on her to be created and sustained, they too could be considered "dragons" in the west branch. Speaking of, Hakuyou brought her shikigami up with curiosity and admiration. For that, Liana was more than pleased to talk about it in the now.
"Ah, my shikigami. You could call them my signature kidou; I have no problems sharing information about them, though I've been told on the difficult in executing them, so I don't know of anyone who could replicate it thus far. Perhaps you would be the first, Shiba-san?"
To demonstrate, Liana once more conjured a shikigami, this one small, like a tiny mouse. She lifted her arm and opened her hand, the mouse manifesting right atop her palm. With it, she even spoke an incantation.
"Be my eyes within the night, for I am the Rat King."
The mouse came about and ran from her palm, scurrying across her shoulders onto her other arm before running to the ground and scurrying off.
"You are correct, Shiba-san. I maintain a connection to the shikigami and maintain control. Some have autonomy, some do not. None of the ones I've summoned have total autonomy--they all need me to be consciously and actively controlling them. Fortunately, I have a knack for thinking multiple things like this, so I have no issues controlling all of them. As for their energy source, they indeed come from me; if any shikigami of mine were to cast a kidou, the cost comes from my own spiritual resources."

"What classifies a dragon?" The man would repeat the question for a bit muelling such a thing over, before nodding. "Dragons I would say are spiritual beings, much in the vein of hollows. Perhaps if one was to study one they may find a common casualty to them both; but where say a squirrel differs from a rats. There is a common spiritual substance, or thing, which connects them. " The man would explain casually, somewhat going into depth about the spiritual strains- how the make of dragons are share some type of 'genetic' to it with variations.
He'd go on for a good while before ceasing once she got the general idea, while not particularly articulate he had a great knowledge from sheer study. "I see I see! The connects, I can briefly feel them, seemed to be reinforced quite well. I suppose it would be hard to devise a kido to break such bonds, but not impossible. I must say, undoing this spell may prove harder than replicating it. But perhaps I shall, Sensei, given enough time and tenacity. Anything is possible with those two." The man would offer before examining the creation once more, a keen mind examining not only the kido formation- but the simply behaviour of such a creature.
"I almost wonder if hollows, and the creation of a hollow soul, is almost a natural evolution for the human. Perhaps dragons, are but human souls who undertook a different path. I once read a study on the belief of ley lines, metaphysical or energy connections which may alter the world around one. This is all theory of course, but perhaps the geography of a region can determine the evolution of a human soul. As they say, legends are but tales which do not fit neatly within the pages of history."
