THE BLADE MAIDEN
KAGAYAKU NO MURASAKI
Once upon a time in her life, Murasaki had been at her happiest when on the steppes of Mongolia. Day in and day out of simply riding under the clear blue skies, a quiet life with only her firepit and her horse to keep her company. But, of course, those days were now long gone. The only thing that the 7th Division's Captain now cared upon on these plains was the improvement of herself and her division.
They had faced a loss at Las Vegas that was nothing short of catastrophic. They had been ill-equipped to perform their singular duty, of protecting Earth against Hollows. With that in mind, she had taken those few members of the Division left who she still earnestly had any faith in, and left to train. For how long, or in what manner, she hadn't really cared one way or the other. All that mattered was improvement, was showing that the 7th Division was still worth something. Even Murasaki needed to convince herself of that, at this point.
Now, after months of training, they were preparing to return to Soul Society. It wasn't so much that Murasaki felt they had suitably improved. If she had years more to spend here, she would have, just to ensure that they were up to snuff. But time didn't permit for that, and Murasaki knew that fully. Tonight was the final night that they would be staying in Mongolia before they once more took to their duties, and knowing that her subordinates were likely exhausted by now, she had opted to grant them a night of rest. They'd earned it.

Working hard or hardly working? For Alastor it was a matter of hard work with how exhausted he had been lately from the way the captain had been riding his ass but he wasn't going to give up. He had a spirit to burn bright and do them both proud.
"Gah. I'm sore all over."
He was glad this was the last night even though he liked the time out here. Even if Murasaki still had herself locked away from the world. But he still wouldn't trade the pain in his body for anything right now while sitting around the base of operations they had set up for their time here.

Arkin was in relatively high mood as he was currently cooking stew over the fire, stirring it within their yurt. Next to him he held a jug of fermented horse milk, otherwise known as Kumis, as a wide grin laid on his features. He was one of the most exceptionally fit in the group, so the intensity of the training suited him well and not leaving him as such as mess as Young Alastor. He'd pour himself a drink passing the jug around to his companions.
"Ah! Simply weakness leaving the body, Young Alastor. You will be strong, yes?" The accent of Arkin slipped through, before looking to Murasaki with a smile. "We shall enjoy dis' last night together, and be merry."
The man held the mug upwards, downing the contents. Within but a few moments, it would refill it's self with more of this 'Kumis.' A neat trick.

Murasaki, for her part, was simply laying on her own bunk, staring up at the canvas roof of their yurt, nothing especially on her mind other than a desire to have something to do. For now, all she really could do was wait for the soup to be finished, something she didn't especially relish one way or the other. She glanced at the jug of kumis that she herself had made, but at the moment she didn't especially want any of it. Drink went with dinner, and she wasn't exactly the kind of person who just drank for the sake of it right now.
"What matters is your well-being. Pushing you even harder on the last day would just make you burn out. We can't get anything done like that."
Her voice was cold and lacking in any real empathy, and her face only seemed to move the barest minimum to speak. The idea of celebrating right now was...not something she thought much of.

Was the Viking just made of iron or something? The red head had to think on it while her just merrily acted like the training was nothing. Still his jolly attitude was contagious and he laughed before taking another drink of the kumis.
But if Arkin was keeping the room warm with all the radiance of the star their captain was sucking it all up into the black hole she was. So he got up to sit next to her.
"Hey Captain. Can you at least try to have fun? You can't be in a slump like this forever you know..."
He offered her a serve of the drink.
"How you are doing is also important for the wellbeing of the division too you know? If you cant smile how can they smile."

"Young Alastor speaks the truth."
The man offered a grim nod, his face stone walling into a thin line as if to emphasize it. He then allow'd a wide grin to come onto his face, chuckling ever the jester. He wanted her to be happy, to express joy as that was needed by his leader. For a moment he was silent before speaking.
"I shall be forthcoming. I believe, Captain, you are troubled. Before we head back to our comrades, I must express some heavy things which lay on my heart. You have changed, and I do not wish to see it any longer."
He spoke in that firm, but understanding voice. The viking would take a swing of the milk, before stirring the pot further. He'd cast sky blue eyes upon her.
"But I cannot say those things, if I do not speak to the real, Kagayaku No Murasaki."

"I'll smile when I have the time to smile."
It was a very direct response, and Murasaki took a moment or two to consider whether or not she would even accept the drink Alastor had offered. In the end, she did, sitting up and downing the whole thing in a single gulp. The alcohol burned her throat, but it didn't much bother her given her state.
"It doesn't matter that I've changed. I can't spend my time on personal issues when there's work to be done."
Curt, to the point. Murasaki knew that she had far more she would have said in another setting, but the idea of laying her emotions bare for the world to see was...well, not in line with how she was right now.

Now that wasn't acceptable. She just gonna fob him off like that, technically them both but the red head was trying here to appeal to her. She took the offer of drink which was a start.
"But.. But there is no work to be done right now. We're not doing anything, and it's so hypocritical for you to just sit here and expect us to improve and grow when you're not willing yourself."
He was getting worked up and a little agitated while he tried to appeal to her true self under the cold shell. He shot a look to Arkin for help. He didn't know how to deal with women and the man had way more experience to him that'd make him better suited to dealing with this.
But Alastor wasn't a quitter.

"You pain me every moment you maintain your burdens, dear Captain. It is a reminder.. of how I- we have failed you."
The steel which was Arkin's voice, the loudness which seemed to always be ready to hold a boast on his lips faltered. In that moment where he spoke of his they had failed her, it cracked unable to speak properly- before taking a moment to reforge himself. The large man standing to his feet, eyes buzzing with eletricity and conviction. His body was pained with the very reality that even now he was nothing but a failure if he could not read his captain.
He was better dead, than in her service, is this was the case.
His head turned to look at Young Alastor knowing he had Arkin's support, standing above the brewing pot he seemed entirely committed to this idea. He would not relent, he would not be a failure to his captain any longer. Thus, the viking spoke once more.
"I wish to speak to my captain, not the stranger before me. Please."

Murasaki stared up at the ceiling for a long moment at their replies. She had sort of expected this, honestly. It was hard to say why exactly, but she could tell they hadn't been at ease around her. And yet, at Alastor's words... At those she couldn't help but take a bit of pause.
"I think you would be unhappy if you talked to your captain. I think it would hurt you to see just the state she's in right now."
Murasaki's gaze seemed empty now, not aimed at anything in particular. Nothing really existed to her anymore, but the voices of her squadmates.
"She spends every day wondering if she ever had a chance to succeed. Looking backward at every mistake she's ever made. Keeping up the charade that she's happy, that she's proud of herself, that she thinks she can still do it. She's thought about killing herself, you know. Really thought about it, planned for it even. I don't think she can handle anything else going wrong for her."
Her voice still rang hollow, her eyes still stared at nothing. But she was shaking now, if only the faintest bit. She just couldn't keep everything back now. There was too much.
