Duel of Wills

DIVINE CRUSADER
Days had been bleeding together since the arrival of the Madness in Beijing. Days of horror and conflict that could only be considered some of the bloodiest days in the cities recent history. All of this caused by the insanity of a man who had tried to protect the capital, an insanity that was now spreading further and further with the passing second, and the populace was feeling it. Looting, mayhem, and chaos had become the normal over the last few days as the people of Beijing lost their minds and gave into madness. Once mild mannered folk: a friendly neighbor, a mild mannered grocer, or a helpful law enforcement officer quickly turned into the almost the opposite of who they were. Friends became enemies, enemies became friends inside of the miasma as everything was turned on its head, and with that change came the paranoia. Who could be trusted?
Those with the ability to resist or those who had methods to stay sane could not contact the outside world for help and were left holding themselves up in defended locations hoping it will would all blow over. But as the days went by and those that were sane began to lower number and those that were consumed by madness continued to grow, hope began to began to give way to despair.
It would have been fine if the people had only to deal with the madness, but the corpses of the dead were now rising as well. Wandering the streets, attacking those who were effected or not, the dead had risen and with it the chances for survival greatly decreased. While the dead were not that strong alone, in groups they were like a tidal wave caused by a typhoon. The people had no recourse for it, maddened or sane, they were quickly pushed to their brink no matter which side of the coin they were on.
It was why Steiner had arrived in Beijing in the first place.
The Divine Crusader had descended on Beijing in hopes of protecting the people from the masses of the walking dead, but upon arrival had quickly learned of the madness as well. It had been tough for him to gauge which person was effected or not at first, but over time he had at least got used to the tell tale signs of whatever this madness was. He had been doing his part, using the flat of the blade to incapacitate those that were crazy, and using the edge for those that had rose from their eternal rest. And for a while, the hero had managed to avoid going crazy himself. As if by a stroke of luck his willpower had held the whispers of insanity caused by the miasma at bay, allowing him to perform his heroics without risk of losing his mind while doing so, and over the course of time he had been there he had managed to save a few dozen people. Moving them to the border and close to a Lux evacuation zone was all he could really do, as the feeling of what was in the center of the city made even him hesitate.
Steiner was reckless at times, but even he wasn't that crazy to go pushing that far into the interior. Rather he would rely on others to deal with that, he instead would focus on the ground work, and save who he could. That was his role in this story and he would stick to it.
At least that is what he had thought.
But even the strongest of wills couldn't keep the whispers at bay forever and over time the wall that Steiner had built up slowly began to erode. Maybe it was after he had seen a young husband murdering his new wife or perhaps it was the time he had saw a priest stealing from his own flock that had finally triggered the madness to take him, or maybe it had just been the constant barrage from the miasma. All that Steiner knew was that he had snapped, but the worst part? The worst part was that Steiner couldn't stop himself. Over the last few hours, Steiner had become cold. While at first he had differentiated between the dead and the insane, his mind had slowly began dubbing everyone as irredeemable. This way of thinking had him turning the edge to everyone he saw, it didn't matter who it was: insane, dead, or sane. He killed remorselessly and without pause or hesitation.
His whole body acted on the whims of whispers and the desire to purge the corrupted from this city. It was if Steiner's body was a ship and he just a passenger desperately trying to get back into the cockpit to take control while some madman wildly pushed the ship closer to the wall. His body marched solemnly, killing those that came to close, toward the source of all this madness. Beijing would be purged and the infection that was spreading would be stifled, the new pilot had deemed it so, and as such there was no other choice.

Aizen had been a fight, one that Ulv had put a great deal into, alongside Hebi. The good news, was the guy had been killed so hard Ulv felt his soul disintegrate like a Quincy killing a Hollow. He wasn't going to show up anywhere, ever again. The bad news, was that Hebi had put so much of himself into the fight that something had gone wrong with the man. And he let out a billowing, raging miasma of madness that threatened to cover the whole of Asia with it's mind-warping power. So Ulv did the only thing that she could do, creating a reverse reiatsu infliction and sucking the Wavelength into her body.
She could not get all of it, Hebi was monsterously powerful after all, and so Beijing was trapped in the veil of madness while the Flame Of Hope executed Tung Ren to clean the madness. Her Resolve Flame flexed and thrashed against it, and for a week she sat in torpor, cleaning herself and it. But, eventually, she was brought out of this by the feel of a flash in her heart, mind and soul. Her Steiner had come to the city, to help the people in it.
But, as usual, he charged in recklessly, gave no heed to himself and got himself caught in the darkness of the Mad Miasma. And so it fell, again, to Ulv. Standing and feeling the strain of the Madness still ripping at her soul, she took a breath. She'd be minimal in her effective capacity, but still had to go and do it anyway. So she set off, and landed gently in front of Steiner, between him and a woman on the ground.
"Some things never change, huh?" Ulv's voice lacked that subtle thunder it had, the implication of great power was absent, and Ulv truly felt like just a woman in front of him. The Resolve Flame was not there and all that Hollow Power was completely lacking, despite her eyes. "Running headlong in has gotten you in-" Ulv had a slight coughing fit and hacked out more black goo, and then laughed. "Blah blah speech. You ready for this?"

"Yes, it seems that even though you have been infected you still seem to wish to lecture me."
The voice of Steiner Franz seemed to lack any emotion as his eyes peered at the obstruction to his plan to purge Beijing. It was the one who had trained him, yet she lacked the power he had usually associated with his old master, and more than likely this could be blamed on the damage that she had taken. It wasn't visible on the outside, but Steiner could sense it on the inside. An internal damage that would hold her back from pulling out every single stop she had in the bag, in fact the playing field was much more level between the two of them, and that brought a smile across his face. At least that is what the current pilot of the young hero was doing, his face contorting into a grin that was not his own. Inside the other Steiner, the still sane part, begging him to not even think of what he was thinking of.
"It does bring a smile to my face to see the level of consistency that you bring to berating me for doing the right thing. Its almost like you get off on it."
The insane Steiner began to remove his jacket, stained pink from the blood he had been spilling of the infected, and as he removed his jacket his arms and body were covered in a black spider web of veins. Showing the clear infection of madness that was steadily spreading across his form and the small armory of weapons hanging all across his body.
"To be honest, Ulv...I grow sick of your lectures. I grow tired of being told I'm reckless when as you can see..."
The insane Steiner gestured to the city around him, falling apart, and the sounds of the insane filling the ears like a symphony of despair.
"Caution is pointless at this point...action needs to be taken and I will be the one to take it! This city will be purged, all those infected by the insanity will be destroyed by my blade, and only then will this city be able to know peace."
The insane Steiner said with conviction as he drew the sword from his back and stared dead ahead at his former teacher. He pointed it at her, covered in the blood of the insane and the dead alike, and then let out a small laugh. The laugh was cold and lacked any true emotion save for malice.
"It would have been better if you had hid, ran far away, and practiced what you preach. Because right now...you are being reckless, Ulv. You are hurting oh so much and yet you came out here, infected, and knowing all too well what was going to happen if you stood in my way."
An aura appeared around Steiner as his mind fell deep into trance, as he slowly began to allow his instinct to take control before saying one last thing to his teacher as the voice of sanity begged him to stop.
"This city will be purged, you along with it."
Steiner took his stance, he wasn't going to make the first move. His instincts told him that at close range he would have some difficulty even if she was hurting, his best move would be to exploit her weakened state and wear her down in terms of stamina. If he could tire her out, he would have the advantage, and unlike her he wasn't in nearly as bad of a shape as she was, he was perfectly healthy despite the effects of the insanity. And he would bide his time till she made her move and he awaited patiently for it, his entire form ready to defend from her assault.

"Ehh, someone had to stop this happening to the whole of Asia. I was just there at the time. Still, I can agree with you that my consistency of the same topic is amusing. You are so consistent with the same fuckup that I have the same lecture for you every time we meet. Even a monkey learns after being shown enough times, but you never were one for learning, huh?"
Ulv shook her head, and then looked over at Steiner as he took a defensive stance. A good plan, charging to close with Ulv was suicide, even when she was weakened as she was. But, she wasn't renowned across the world for her combat capabilities just for that.
"A warrior with a single blade is easily defeated. It is true I just got off putting down Sosuke Aizen and swallowing Hebi's dark seed, but thinking I am an easy target without my Bankai is certainly not something I would have gone in for, personally"
Ulv would then shrug on a bright blue dress, something that seemed made from the air itself. The Wind kicked up and then she snapped her palm towards Steiner, her Resolve Flame bursting out and igniting the air, turning it into a gout of flame raging down to the main street towards Steiner.

- Spoiler:
- Storm Regalia: The Right to Rule The Wind - The soul of all air in the world, it is a collective soul, and does not work the same as normal souls, but still has some degree of sentience. This Regalia takes the appearance of a soft blue dress. The materials are naught but The Wind, cloaking the one who rules their Road and granting a considerable boost to all Wind Road techniques - including Slip Stream, which is the initial step on the Wind Road - and enhancing the speed, power, and Regal Might of all the techniques. It was gifted after Ulv's revival to show the Wind's devotion to her. Such is their devotion, that Ulv can even garner the attention of El Ragna, the Emperor of The Wind. But that is a story, for another time.
This attention can come at a slight cost. The intense jealousy of The Wind prevents her from releasing her Zanpaktou, or donning her Hollow mask, and if she does either, The Regalia ruptures dramatically and can not be donned again for the entire thread.
The Storm Regalia grants access to many techniques of the Wind Road, but like most things, has no instruction booklet, so Ulv must figure these out herself.
The Palms of Wind (Advanced Strength): Between your palm, and The Wind, is a barrier. To visualize this barrier, and the place your palm against it, you can suddenly exert pressure, and rupture it momentarily, creating a gale in the direction of the ruptured barrier. The User's strength determined how strong the wind is, but even Beginner Strength practitioners can knock an average person over with this technique. Elite Strength practitioners can blast a target hard enough to create a Void Zone around the target for a few seconds, depriving them of oxygen until the displaced wind returns, and Grandmaster practitioners are mythical in the scale of wind they cause.

Yes, it seemed as though she had some tricks up her sleeve, but Steiner in his current state would not be denied. His mission was just, it was pure, and it was motivated with the thought of saving the entire city from itself. He would not be stopped by a foul mouthed belligerent. As soon as she mocked him, her fate had been sealed, and Steiner's power surged out as his consciousness faded into nothing and instinct took over. He was his sword and his sword was him. He said nothing as the flame attack approached him, but quickly his hand would go to the wall of the building next to him, a wall of concrete emerging from the building.
In the process the buildings stability would begin to waver as a massive amount of concrete was being transferred out by Steiner's own Forging ability into creating a defensive wall to block the incoming wave of fire. It wasn't forging fast enough to cover the whole street, but Steiner was still capable of defending himself from the flames. She believed that it was better to have more than one sword, in truth Steiner agreed, but she was vastly underestimating him at this moment.
So she thought he was one dimensional? That he could only swing swords? Well, she was wrong. Focusing his Chi Energy into the wall he had created hundreds of spikes would form and he continued to focus his chi energy as he began to launch hundreds of super heated concrete spikes, heated by the very flame that Ulv had sent at him, at her. In the process he weakened his wall by draining more concrete, after all to make these spikes he had to give up some of the thickness of the defensive wall, and exchange it for offensive firepower. Such was the power of his Forging ability, a one for one trade. As he did this the heat would magnify, but he didn't care, his mind was too far lost in the haze of madness to care about a little heat in October.

Not such a one-trick pony after all. Little Steiner had some new toys to play with. Creating a concrete wall to protect him from the flames, and then pulling from that wall to throw spikes at her. Quite a lot of spikes, actually. One would almost worry about the number if they were not Ulv.
She took a breath and her mind narrowed, focusing on the situation at hand, taking into account the trajectories of all the spikes, and then calling The Wind to create a U-Funnel. The spikes would enter this funnel - Ulv making subtle movements to avoid any spike that would hit her while it was entering - and then fly back out, propelled by harsh winds to crash into the wall Steiner had made.
The heat-damaged wall would not be able to hold much, but the spikes were equally heat damaged and so would probably shatter into pieces upon impact, so any hope of penetration was very low.She would, at best, make his wall Divine Cheese - as it would be very Hol(e)y.
"That's a neat new trick. I like it~" Ulv exclaimed, kicking up a piece of the ground and then punching it, using her Recoilless Motion to drive all her kinetic force into the thing. Her mind worked out the required path to travel directly towards Steiner, and then it was launched, a cracking boom preceded shattering windows as the chunk of floor hit mach speed. It would burn up from the heat of wind resistance in a few seconds, but Ulv and Steiner were close enough the piece covered the distance in a fraction of that.
Of course, she was stalling for a bit to have a backing to compensate for her lacking strength, but she was giving a good run while stalling, so it didn't seem like she was.

A measly few seconds before impact was all Steiner had to dodge the asphalt launched at him by Ulv's brutish strength, a measly few seconds would have been too much for Steiner to compute if he wasn't in his trance. He dug deeper into it, seconds increased in length as his natural reflexes improved, and his reaction time improved all the while Steiner's consciousness was pushed further down. Farther away from regaining the reigns and ending this fight before it got too bloody. His body didn't move as a few shards of shrapnel left over from his own super heated spikes he launched at Ulv sliced through his form, superficial damage that his mind didn't even register, and his body reacted on pure instinct as the asphalt crashed through the wall toward him.
Mach speed, three hundred and forty three meters a seconds, was not something to scoff at, but because of the trance Steiner was just fast enough to get by it by dashing to the side, and ducking into a nearby alleyway. As he did so Steiner would slide his hand up against the wall and take the rest of the concrete out from one of the stabilizing pillars creating a second sword in the process. The building would begin to lean dangerously as it began to collapse into the middle of the road. If there were anyone alive in the building they would probably had screamed, but Steiner was too insane and too far into his trance to truly pay attention to such things. The only thing that mattered at this moment was the fight and he was going to win no matter the cost. Steiner would use the distraction of the building collapsing to his advantage as he would conveniently leave the sword leaned up against the collapsed building to begin to throw his throwing knives at Ulv.
He would throw them at similar speed to Ulv, launching them at speeds equivalent of mach 1, through the dust left by the collapsed building. While these would do little damage to Ulv if they did hit they would more than likely act as further distraction for what Steiner was planning next. Already Chi energy was flowing from the Earth into him for his ace that he had not yet used in combat yet. Perhaps he would be able to get Ulv with this technique, but he would have to play his cards right. Regardless of her weakened state, Steiner could still feel her fighting spirit, and even his instincts told him to avoid up close and personal battle even with her. If it came down to it, he would rather continue this battle from range as he might have a slight advantage if he used the terrain right.
"Need to wait for an opening..."
He murmured to himself as he continued to gather energy.

Steiner was certainly a quick one these days. It made her happy to see he was growing so much. Mach Speed capability was a milestone between normal movement and the true Supernatural Powers you could attain beyond that. Plus, he even avoided the trap of moving faster than he could see by having a good, strong mentality. It was a mixed blessing to see everything that happened in a battlefield, but a strong mind able to comprehend everything that happened in a battlefield was undoubtedly a boon.
The trance he was in was also helpful. But, what was not helpful to him, was fighting Ulv in such a trance. Not only was she well capable of creating tangible emotions - which loved to fuck with instinct-driven mindsets to begin with - but she had a backdoor into his head with her Resolve Network.
Maybe if Steiner was fully aware of himself, purged of both the Madness and his current mindset, instinct sharpened to a painful point, he might be able to counter her trickery, but in this form he was open to it in a way he never would have been were it not Ulv he was fighting.
Catching the throwing knives in her U-Tunnel, she then flexed her mind, and flicked Steiner's instincts through the Network, making him believe they had been thrown back to him like the last lot were. But, she had instead kept them in reserve and would only throw them after Steiner had reflexively reacted to the incoming threat. She kept the knives away from any vitals, would would aim for his thighs to cripple mobility.

As Ulv schemed and plotted, more an more energy began to gather from around the area, and not just from the earth itself. The wind began to offer energy, a nearby burning car offered up its heat, and from a barely working fountain the water began to add its own energy into the mix. Four elements coming together, the energy of the Earth being converted into power for Steiner's special move, and just as it reached critical mass there was an almost wave of pressure that pushed all the dust away. Inside of the dust as it cleared, Steiner stood covered in runes of multiple colors that would change on a whim of its own, and Steiner stood ready to launch the attack as the runes began to grow brighter in intensity.
He, however would quickly receive a few throwing knives to his thighs for revealing himself, and with that impact, the runes began to fade a bit in color as Steiner almost hunched over in pain from the impact. Now with knives in his thighs, Steiner began to lean forward, and looked to be almost ready to fall face first into the ground beneath him. Yet, Steiner's will, and his need to make contact with Ulv were much too high to allow such a fate to happen. He would not be made a fool of or underestimated. He was tired of being treated as reckless or much too weak to be running in to the chaotic world to fight evil, he had to prove his value now.
He had to prove that the investments made into the person he was were not wasted! That he wasn't going to squander the gifts or sit idly by honing those gifts while the world burned around him!
For a moment both the insane side of him and the sane side of him agreed, and gritted their teeth, their eyes blazing with determination far beyond that of normal men. He dug his feet into the ground, the pain escalating as he continued to fall forward, and then with all his might, he would use his feet to launch himself forward as he continued to fall forward. Extending both of his hands forward toward Ulv as he did so, the runes on his skin reigniting as they began to crawl along his arms, swirling, and becoming a cyclone of colors and light. Moving at mach speed it would appear as though a train were passing by with multi-colored strobe lights.
"ULV!"
Steiner shouted as he would get to a close enough distance. Range had not worked and to launch this move from that far away with Ulv manipulating the wind in that manner? Steiner didn't know how it would affect the trajectory. No, it would be better to put himself as collateral and take Ulv down with him than give her a chance to blow away Gaia Force or cut it to ribbons. So he launched it when he thought it was adequate enough distance away and the explosion, upon contact, would appear as though a cyclone of lights had appeared in the city. Anything inside of this cyclone would be assaulted by the elements of fire, wind, water, and earth if they were viewed as an enemy. Which to Steiner in this state was just about anything not him.

He was coming, finally. Well, four would have to suffice, but that was still considerable. Ulv was quite a mighty being with four, and well capable of causing quite considerable personal damage. Only her highest forms caused more than circumstantial terrestrial damage, after all. Calculating Steiner's movements and the attack he was coming with, she thought with extreme speed and then met Steiner as he rushed towards her, the power of the elements at his call. When he was close, Ulv used Bo-Bup to close the gap and be right there, in front of him. This, obviously, caused her to be immediately struck by his attack. He was moving swiftly and the attack had a wide enough area that trying to avoid it would simply see her being caught in it and off-balance besides.
The explosion of power crashed against her body and the ribs, reinforced by power though they were, cracked under the force of Steiner's blow. But not a milimeter did Ulv step back, and instead the back of her hand snapped up with unnerving grace and speed, aiming for the underside of Steiner's jaw.
Not only was it thrown with her own formidable strength and super-dense skeleton backed by her Fury Stacks - while heavily crippled, it was still something of note for people of Steiner's level of power - but the blow she had taken from Steiner had been absorbed, and redirected into the backpalm strike by Flow Redirection. While Ulv could not use Tai Chi in it's Wulin form, she was still well capable of using the martial theory behind the form.
