Please Resolve Yourself, Captain [Private/Hernex]
Tue Sep 04, 2018 4:18 pm
Izanami no Kami
Paris was just done. Micah was now back in Soul Society, specifically his office in the 5th Division Head-Quarters. He just finished wrapping up the paperwork required to process the completion of the mission, an extraordinary amount of black highlights appropriately classifying a lot of the conversation, which always seemed like the most useless and counter-intuitive practice to Micah since he'd end up regurgitating all the necessary and blacked-out information to the captain verbally anyways, but even in spite of his languid preferences, the shinigami was still dedicated and completed his orders properly.
Placing all the papers into a single folder, Micah stood from his desk and made his way towards Captain Astillon's office. Usually he'd follow this process along with Captain Okami instead, as he was the Co-Captain responsible over most of the Stealth Force's less praiseworthy missions; however, Captain Okami was out for the time being on his own responsibilities, and it was fairly critical to get these reports out promptly. After reporting the mission, Micah's plan was to meet his guys at the bar, get some rest that night, and immediately venture to Mana's United States for the next mission.
That said, Micah figured it'd be fine if he just did this report with Captain Astillon instead, even though it was a less enjoyable process. Despite his position, Captain Astillon was incredibly pacifistic, and before Captain Okami was instated as the Co-Captain, it caused Micah a number of troubles to send things through the former. Micah still held much respect for Captain Astillon, as he did work his way up to the status and dedicated significant efforts to the Gotei; he was just a hassle to handle for the 3rd Seat in these scenarios.
Finally at the captain's office, Micah took a deep breath in and out and knocked on the door.
"Captain Astillon, it's Micah. I've come to report the contents of the latest mission and brief you on the next."

THE UNHOLY STORM
While he most certainly didn't approve of it, Henrex was very well aware of what Kuro's side of the Stealth Force often was up to. It wasn't a surprise that he kept, at the very least, a small number of tabs on the information that was passed through the ranks of Kuro's side, along with the Omintsukido. So, when there came a knock at his door, Henrex simply flicked his wrist, harnessing his influence over the wind in order to open the door.
"Come in, Micah."
As he would likely be stepping into his office, Henrex turned up from his own paperwork -- as a result of the espionage mission that he had performed in Europe -- setting down his pen and facing the 3rd Seat.
"Go on."

Micah let out a hefty sigh, no effort to hide his discomfort or displeasure in the processes. He still committed himself to doing things the proper way out of obligation and a sense of responsibility, but Micah's languid and honest persona never let anyone misunderstand that he found particular enjoyment in it. This was also represented in his body language; although Micah kept his body posture straight, for the most part it didn't seem particularly well-mannered. To be fair, he came from the more rambunctious days of the combat division--which was still as rowdy as ever, if not slightly more structured considering its transition to be the head division--so, provided he did his job, most of it was excused. At the very least, Micah didn't think his leadership cared about this sort of attitude, though he didn't care himself.
The man stopped just a few paces short of Captain Astillon's desk, politely but swiftly dropping the paperwork onto its surface, the words on the title outlining very clearly how confidential this information was. Aside from those who directly participated in the event, only the stealth force's highest echelons and the captain commander was aware of it.
"Mission was flawlessly executed. There's no casualties on our side, everyone has successfully returned to Soul Society. For all intents and purposes, Paris should be left in a thorough state of chaos, and all the evidence leads back to arrancar and hollow rights extremist groups. Even if an investigation unravels that the evidence was falsified or planted, none of it would be traced back to us--not that it would matter in the next few months."
Of course, Micah was referring to the upcoming war. It most definitely seemed inevitable at this point, and Micah was never one to dally around the facts or lighten his words. Even if most people treated this atmosphere with delicacy.
"Actually, no. There might be some issue, I guess."
Now that he did what he came to do, the "drive to fulfill his duty" sort of mentality faded away a bit, idle talk escaping Micah's mouth in its stead.
"It's not clearly listed in the documents since it's not a definitive number, and there's an expectation that the data we gathered just immediately after the incident would be inaccurate due to the recency and grand scale, but we've estimated hundreds of thousands of casualties in Paris. None ours, of course, but we can't say with absolute certainty that it was wholly Shadow Fall personnel. Definitely mostly demons, but it's assumed humans, arrancars, and hollows were mixed in. Of course, as I said, none of it leads back to us. Provided no-one talks about it."
In these last words, Micah spoke particularly slowly and sharply articulated each syllable. Obviously, there were some implications, but the shinigami had no habit of asserting things without being sure of it himself. Not anymore, at least. Generally, there should be no issues, however; the Stealth Force of all peoples were very good at keeping secrets, after all. So much that, it's reasonable to assume the best of the division were the best at keeping secrets.

THE UNHOLY STORM
Henrex took a glance at the paperwork that had been dropped on his desk, sighing softly as he read the confidentiality notice and a hand rose, rubbing his eyes as he pulled the stack closer to him. His eyes glanced at Micah for a moment as he stated the success of the mission. No casualties on their side, it would all be traced back to some Arrancar-Hollow rights group.
'...not that it would matter in a few months.'
Those words sent a chill down the Captain's spine. The thought of war still shook him. The one thing that he despised -- mainly due to the fact that he was simply tired of it all. Thus, the man's face paled quite a bit at the mention of what seemed to be the inevitable conflict.
'Is it too much to ask for a longer time of peace...?'
Henrex's eyes began to close as he took in a breath to speak before Micah stated that there might be an issue. As his eyes immediately opened, Henrex's expression turned grave. Once again, he said nothing -- only listening to Micah as he stated the detailed results of the mission.
A deep silence filled the room, so quiet, you could hear a pin hit the floor.
Finally, to break the silence, Henrex let out a soft sigh as he rose from his chair as deafened steps lightly tread around the chair and the man stared out the window. Only for a few minutes did he stand there before he made his way back to his desk, propping his hands onto his desk on his elbows and stared at his desk, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Hundreds of thousands of lives...I see."
Henrex let out a shaky breath as he continued to avoid the gaze of his third seat. It wasn't hard for someone to discover that he was a person who despised the concept of death and mortality. He had seen enough of it throughout his life, and he didn't want to see it anymore. All he wanted, was to have peace. Have a time where there weren't tensions so incredibly high, a time where he didn't have to worry and fear for the lives of the people that he loved -- and fear what that might do to his mentality.
He had seen conflict grow and evolve, and he was tired of it all. It was the same thing, over and over again. A constant cycle of pointlessness.
Thus, as he sat there with these thoughts, Henrex found himself in a conundrum. How was he supposed to respond to this? He couldn't bring himself to say 'good job'. To him, it was the exact opposite. He couldn't compliment something like that - it just wasn't in his nature. But, taking a step back and taking a deep breath, Henrex collected himself. Turning his gaze back to Micah, he simply had one question.
"Well...what's next, then?"

Micah's eyes squinted in assessment of his captain. Micah was by no means a pariah of motivation, particularly for his job, but it was definitely with a different tone that he unenthusiastically performed his tasks compared to Captain Astillon. The two certainly had a lot of similarities in this respect, one being them being unusually suited to their line of work, whilst not necessarily being so appreciative of it; but a large difference was why they did it anyways. As far as anyone else might be concerned, Micah seemed to perform out of a sense of duty and responsibility, though even in that sense it was rather vague. Captain Astillon, on the other hand--as far as Micah was concerned, his motivations were even more vague. The captain was by no means hesitant in displaying his displeasure towards the true colours of the Stealth Division. Everyone already knew the less-than-ethical tasks they performed, and it was glossed over as a necessary evil. For the most part, only the captain was apologetically vocal and transparent about it. So, it begged the question,
"Why do you do it?"
The 3rd Seat didn't actually mean to ask aloud; it kind of just slipped out, but now that he said it, the shinigami decided to roll with it. After all, Micah was a curious person, and reservations weren't necessary for formalities. This was a private conversation, after all.
"Captain, with all due respect, you're not the most emotionally suited towards being in the Stealth Division. I reckon you know this very well yourself; even if you have an impeccably suitable skill-set and talents, it doesn't count for enough if you don't have the right mentality for it. So, why do you do it?"
He let out an elongated sigh, some tone of frustration in it. Micah walked forward to take a seat across his captain's desk and postured himself casually, his foot resting on the other leg's knee. He was clearly prepared for a much longer conversation than what he initially came here for, and Micah, meddlesome and stubborn as he was, didn't seem keen on leaving without a better understanding of his superior.
"I think it'd be pertinent for me, as a subordinate, to be serving under someone I'm able to view as more than a reluctant leader, as hypocritical as that may be, so if you could forgive my brunt, I'd be much obliged."

THE UNHOLY STORM
He could tell that something was on his Seated Officer's mind. The way that he looked at him, it wasn't hard for the Captain to identify something such as that. So, as he continued to observe his subordinate and eventually beginning to open his mouth to ask him that very same question, he answered. Instantly, his face darkened.
He could tell that Micah meant no disrespect -- not that it would matter to him -- it was solely because he was curious and felt like he deserved and needed to know, as his subordinate. To that extent, he was right -- he did deserve to know.
There was part of him that was expecting it, and part of him that wasn't.
He figured that he would question him about his morals -- it wasn't surprising, a lot of people did. But, rather than answer right away, he remained silent for a few minutes, not moving a muscle as he contemplated his words, replaying his sentences over and over in his head, trying to figure out how he could answer this properly, in his eyes.
So, with a hefty sigh, he spoke.
"Yeah, you're right. You do deserve to know. However...that's a very difficult question to answer and explain."
Readjusting himself in his chair, Henrex began as he rubbed his temples.
"You know that I've lived a long time. As a result of that, I've seen a lot of things in my life -- war being one of them. I've fought in countless battles and wars. When I was alive...I was only doing it for one specific reason. Not a reason you'd care about, but it was enough for me to justify what I was doing."
He paused at the notion of his past life, and the reason he took up arms for his country and for his family -- the affirmation he fought so hard to try and achieve, and still not receive.
"It's all the same. There isn't a point to any of it. War hasn't changed anything. It doesn't bring peace, it brings terror and death. It tears people apart, creating more enemies. We just keep making more and more enemies, breeding violence with violence. We're allowed to be just as bad as the people we're trying to defeat, as long as it's for the sake of 'justice' and other people."
Sighing softly, his head soon came to rest in the palm of his hand.
"I guess...besides that, I just have always hated the concept of death and mortality. I've lost a lot of things in my life, and I don't want to lose anymore."
Another pause, much longer than before. Coming back to reality, Henrex shook his head for a moment, before sitting up straight again.
"Sorry, I got into...a bit of a random tangent there."

Micah patiently awaited for his captain to answer. It was a question on the heavier side, and the silence which pervaded was understandable and, in turn, respected. So long as he got a response, Micah didn't mind waiting a bit on it. Once his words came out, Micah did his best to listen and understand, and as much as he tried, some of the sentiment was failing on him, though the shinigami understood it probably wasn't that the matters Captain Astillion spoke on was insignificant, so much as the apathy in Micah's heart didn't really allow him the sentimentality to understand. Or maybe his captain was a bit roundabout in his response.
"No, Captain, that's not really what I meant. Sorry, I guess I should've worded it better and more directly. I kinda got that you had this sort of stance on conflict--that it isn't good, it doesn't really give the best resolutions. Frankly, nobody sane really finds war as in the interests of most people. It benefits specific people, but most just suffer from it, so there's nothing for me to say on that one."
Micah adjusted his posture in his seat, almost wanting to laugh at himself for what seemed to be quite the degree of miscommunication,=; so this time around he wouldn't really put effort into formalising his words. At all.
"What I'm asking, Henrex, is why are you the captain of a military division when you're so clearly bothered by military action. Not every soldier likes to be a soldier, but for someone so averse to performing the duties he's tasked with--especially the leader of the division that explicitly deals with excessively unethical operations--why did you take the mantle of Captain?"
Actually, in this state of mind, it was good timing to voice some of his frustrations. He was already at it anyways, and breaking away from formality couldn't be taken back regardless. Why stop here?
"To be honest, being under you in the Stealth Force is difficult due to your attachment to your moral code. Our job isn't to worry about losses, and especially not the personal feelings of the people we affect, as well as the personal feelings of our soldiers. Our division is designed to do the dirty, nasty, and terrible work. Why did you join the Stealth Force and even climb up to captaincy despite knowing all this, instead of literally any other division whose members could hold their head up high thinking their work can be righteous? Meanwhile, it's inhibiting my work--and the work of those under us--to tread a finer line of what is ethical when our leader, the face of our division, is so against the very concept of our work.
So I ask again--why do you do it?"
