Chapter 1 - The Bastard Child
The Eastern Sugiuran Kingdom is a kingdom of honor, integrity, and high traditional values. Well known for their martial skills and old world charm, the Sugiurans of the East have always strove to foster the old ways of their ancestors and to build the best possible environment for their culture and way of life. It is with this insight into the culture of the East that one could understand just how sacred the traditional values of their forefathers could be to the East. Yet, from time to time there are those who break from tradition, and build their own path. These individuals are most of the time shunned and considered to be outcasts be it because they chose something against tradition or they broke some kind of sacred taboo that the priests and leadership do not condone of. In essence it only made sense that Alister Brand would never be anything more than shunned, excommunicated, and treated like an outcast, but that is getting ahead of one's self. No, the story of Alister Brand began with two warriors having a passionate love affair.
Alister was born to two exceptional warriors of the Eastern army, a young female swordsman by the name of Tinoa Brand, and an unknown father who's name has been lost to history. Tinoa was well known around the East as a swordsman with a great deal of skill, and a beauty that rivaled that of the sun, but much like the sun if one got to close they would be burned. She, a normally quick to anger, and dangerous woman was thought to never be capable of the emotion of love, neither the motivation to seek it out. Yet during one drunken night out on the town, Tinoa did finally cave to the advances of a nameless man who saw her beauty, and did not fear her. The courage of the young man made her fall for him, despite her inebriation of course, and she chose to take him home for a night of passion and for something more she hoped. In truth her quick to anger personality and her dangerous line of work had always been a burden to her and she had always felt alone, so when this man went up to her with her defenses down she had hoped for something more. For the most part, Tinoa was right.
For several months following that drunken night, the young man would stay with her, and basically be the equivalent of a lover, always looking out for her best interest and taking care of her when she came home too injured to do things herself. The price of being a skilled warrior in the East meant that she always had to prove it, always had to show just how powerful she was, and over the few months the two had been together she seemed to have lost a step. While at first she may have thought that it was due to her budding relationship and her emotional state being in flux, she soon learned that was not the case upon visiting a physician who stated that she was with child. The thought of having children had not really crossed her mind as she had always focused solely on her training and fulfilling her duty on the battlefield, but she found herself slightly...happy about it? The thought of having a child with her beloved seemed almost too good to be true for a woman who graced the battlefield far too many times to count. Yet, Tinoa was overjoyed, and with a haste of a young mother to be she rushed to see her beloved and present the glorious news to him.
Upon receiving the news Alister's father reacted with apprehension and a bit of dread, as if the thought of having a child was not something that he was ready to bear. While Tinoa thought that the young man would eventually relent and be as happy as her, it didn't take too long for the man to leave her with child to take all of the scorn, and hatred that came with being a mother to be with no father in sight. Tinoa would continue to try and be a warrior, using her skills which were greatly hindered by her bundle of joy, and eventually after several failed attempts at remaining an active combatant she gave up. She decided it would be better to rely on her life savings, money she had earned from arena duels, and from her time as a warrior of the Eastern Army till her pregnancy was over. This decision was of course a smart one, but none the less she felt judged, and more so knew she was being judged as the people of the village seemingly turned their nose up at the sight of her. Dealing with all of this negativity and the stress of being alone, it was lucky that both her and her child made it through child birth, but it seemed as luck was on their side as Alister was born into a cold hard world, with harsh truths just waiting to slap him and his mother in the face.
Chapter 2 - Hard Choices
While many would think that a large sum of money that had been gathered by many successful arena duels and pension from service to the Eastern Kingdom's military might would be enough to support a child and a young mother, they would be wrong. Alister was not an easy child to deal with and neither was he the most ideal son that a mother would have wanted. Even at an early age, Alister displayed an uncanny knack for mischief that would make most miscreants and low lives applaud and bow in reverence over. While as a baby he may have been the apple of his mother's eye, Alister as he reached the age of five became one of those children that the other families tended to tell their children to avoid. In class he would disrupt his teachers, after school he would pick fights with whoever crossed him, and he tended to have a love for damaging public property that far exceeded anyone's expectations. Over time this drained a great deal of coin from his mother's purse, but Alister didn't care. Alister was all about enjoying himself and doing what he wanted, which much to his mother's ire, meant that he could not be reasoned with or negotiated with.
Tinoa knew that the main reason her son acted out was due to him never having a male role model in his life. While she was a good role model to have, she wasn't around very much due to her needing to work because of Alister's bad habits, and having long since spent the majority of her pension and savings to pay for the damages that he had caused. As such, Alister never really had a guiding hand in his life, and as such acted out with a great deal of anger and frustration because of it. Tinoa would of course try to find a suitable male role model, searching for someone who could hone all of his anger, and frustration into something positive instead of something increasingly negative. However, Alister wasn't easy to deal with, and most of the men in his village tended to look at him as nothing more than a spoiled brat who needed the piss beat out of him instead of a firm hand to guide him. Tinoa tried to push all that negativity in her son toward martial training, honing his skills through practice under her own guidance when she wasn't performing her duty at her job. Sadly, Alister did little to make her feel rewarded for teaching him as he merely turned around, and used the skills he had been taught to cause mischief. Eventually his mother would have to quit her job to be more hands on with him, thinking that maybe with a firm hand he could right his own ship, and do the right thing.
Due to Tinoa having to quit her job to focus on raising him, the funds that they had to live on were drastically cut back, and Alister, though having a much more present parent, would continue to be who he was. This eventually lead to Tinoa having to starve herself a bit to make sure Alister got the necessary food to sustain himself and getting barely any sleep so that she could make sure he stayed out of trouble. Alister began to notice his mother growing weaker over time, always looking exhausted, and always looking sick as though she weren't eating nearly enough to keep herself going. He began to become concerned for her, much to his mother's surprise, and tried his best to stay out of trouble, but due to his reputation trouble didn't seem to want to stay away from him. He continued to get into fights, though he never started them anymore, and eventually he began to steal from grocery stores so that he could put food on the table. He would always be scolded for thieving, but Alister knew that he needed to be more level headed to insure that his mother could eat and stay healthy.
Eventually he traced back all of his mother's hardships to himself, learning that due to him being what he was, and how he was his mother had been practically killing herself to take care of him. One day, as he passed by his mother's room in their small house in the village, he found her passed out from exhaustion, and fatigue in her hand was a letter. A letter from his grandparents. While Alister had never met his grandparents, he knew that his mother always spoke fondly of them, and talked about how amazing they were, and that if he was good that one day he would meet them. His curiosity peaked as to learning the identity of who his family really was, Alister pocketed the letter, and left his mother to rest, tucking her in, and placing a kiss on her forehead as he did so. While his reading comprehension wasn't that great as he was only a seven year old at the time, Alister knew that the letter was not good, and the rudeness of the people who were suppose to be his family over him and his mother was indeed something to behold. Apparently his mother had asked them for help, for money to take care of the both of them, and his grandparents had not only declined, but had refused to help some filthy beggar and her bastard kid.
Angered and hurt, Alister looked back to his mother's room, and then let out a sigh. Many kids at this age didn't have to make such tough decisions and choose what was important to them or what type of person they were going to be, but Alister knew his mother would never be happy or taken care of if he stayed around. Choosing to believe his mother would have been better off without him, Alister left his mother, and his home behind him so that she wouldn't have to worry about the spoiled little brat that he had been. Tinoa would awake a few hours later, finding a hastily written letter drenched in tear stains from her son, telling her that she was now free of the burden of being his mother, and that it was better that way. Tinoa would search for him, but not find him. Heartbroken, Tinoa would return to her home, alone, for the first time in many years.
Chapter 3 - The Coin
While Tinoa wouldn't recover for some time from the loss of her son, Alister Brand set out into the world a poor, and relatively unprepared individual for the world that was around him. His meager supplies he packed were no where near enough to keep him fed for a day or two, let alone for the rest of his life, and though he didn't want to shame his mother he knew for a fact there was only one way he could stay alive out in the streets. Stealing. Choosing the life of a thief, Alister used the skills he had developed from his mother, and his more than mischievous youth to keep himself afloat. Stealing money, goods, and clothes whenever he got the opportunity to. At times, Alister would go days without eating as he would be unsuccessful in stealing coin or food to keep the hunger pangs away, and while it took a great deal out of the youth he knew for a fact that this was for the better. His mother didn't have the means to take care of both of them and he would rather himself starve than have her die of exhaustion and undernourishment. He took up lodging in an alleyway in a city near his village, choosing to live inside a cardboard box, and basically live in isolation from the rest of the world, that to be perfectly honest, he wasn't prepared for.
Alister had spent his whole life inside of his village's walls and being only seven years of age, his experience and skills were vastly underdeveloped, but he strove to keep himself alive in the harsh reality that was the city. Over time he got better at being a thief, his body adjusted to not needing much nourishment to function, and as he reached the age of twelve his body began to develop into that of a capable young man. As his skills and talents grew, so did his ambition. While he had been more than happy to remain some homeless teenager on the street, his thoughts turned to get rich quick schemes, and how he could potentially help his mother by putting coin into her pocket. After all, her family had practically disowned her the day that he was born, and it was only fitting that he would take care of the only family he had left in the world. So, his thievery escalated to not just encompass the need to sustain himself, but to also support his mother. While at first he would fail to steal anything that was worth a damn, he eventually got the hang of stealing valuable items, such as jewelry, and expensive linens which he would promptly sell to turn a profit. He learned how to perform slight of hand and even more so began to fall in love with the process of gambling, as his slight of hand allowed him to cheat rather effectively at it for those who weren't paying too much attention to him.
He would run afoul of the local law enforcement on many occasions and would spend several nights locked inside of a holding cell, only to be released because he was far too young to be sent to a jail deeper in the city, or because the owner's of the property couldn't find it in their hearts to prosecute further. The boon of being of such a young age and of being homeless, he deduced. He would suppose that might have been one of the greatest pluses to being out on his own, as he took advantage of be destitute to get away with living the way he did, and all the while he would set aside a little coin to stockpile a care package for his mother. He took up becoming a street gambler, stealing a deck of cards, and rigging the game to be in his favor so that he could collect money from unknowing passerby who were clearly under prepared to be swindled by a twelve year old. He would always have to move shop after a successful operation as to not draw unwanted attention to himself and as to not get caught in the act as he doubted that any of the sleaze balls he cheated out of their money would have just let him off the hook because he was young or poor. All of that worked for many months, none of the stooges he stole from were the wiser, and all in all things were looking up. Until he met her.
One day, while he was performing his best haul of his life (as short as that was), he encountered a young woman who for the life of him he could not cheat out of her money. Every time Alister would try to play her, using all of the skills he had continually developed through his time on the streets, and from the teaching from his mother, she would somehow find a way to trump him. He didn't know if she was cheating, but it was becoming apparent that regardless of how much he tried he just couldn't beat her. Eventually he relented, cutting his losses, and accepting that the young lady was far more gifted in the art of treachery or far more lucky than he ever could have been. Instead of leaving Alister to himself, she began to follow him, and ask him questions about who he was or why he was doing what he was doing. He told her all about himself, maybe because she was beautiful, and he was a young man thinking with his dick instead of his head, and after hearing his story the young lady would offer him a consolation prize for sharing with her that information. A coin. A golden coin that seemed to gleam in the sun and the moon alike.
Taking the coin from her hand, he would examine it, and test if it was real or not (another skill he had picked up from the streets) only to after proving its authenticity would he turn to find the young lady gone. Finding it odd, but not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, Alister would pocket the coin, and make his way back to his place of dwelling. The following morning he found that, oddly enough, no matter what he did everything seemed to end in his favor. He found a box of expensive clothes in his size on the side of the road, he found a coin purse so full that it actually weighed his pocket down to the point where running was impossible, and on his way to where he was planning to set up operation for the day he was offered a free meal by a group of soldiers at an expensive restaurant. It was like luck itself was on his side and as he performed his normal tricks at the card table on the street, he found himself winning big, and winning a lot more than even he anticipated. He hadn't even needed to cheat, not once. After finishing for the day and going back to his place of dwelling he contemplated why these things were happening before remembering the coin in his pocket.
Grabbing the coin and taking a good long look at it, he wondered if it was to blame for the string of good luck, and even further wondered if the coin itself was a sacred weapon. He now understood why he couldn't beat the young lady at cards, she had bent luck to her will, and had conquered it with little to no effort. So of course nothing he had done would have ever worked against her. Understanding that he had been given a great gift, Alister realized that it was time for him to step his game up, and take his sights to the next level. Riches and fame awaited him, he was sure of it!
Chapter 4 - Black Dogs
For a long while, Alister would just coast through life, and by coast it could easily be assumed that one could mean he bent luck itself to make his life as easy as it possibly could be. He went to gambling halls, made bets on horse races, and challenged people to arena duels, all the while taking advantage of the power of the coin to flip luck on its' head for his benefit. But he didn't keep all the money for himself, no, he wasn't that selfish to say the least. He took the greater portion of the money he earned every month and would place it on his mother's doorstep, running away, and hiding so that she could not see him as he awaited for her to open the door and see her surprised expression. The look of confusion and joy on her face would bring him happiness to say the least, but he refused to allow himself to be seen by her or to be known by her. He had turned her back on her when he had ran away from home, to come home now would only open more wounds than heal them. He would always return to his room at the most expensive inn located in the city and always continue his life of gambling and fighting. This life style fit him better than being the son of Tinoa Brand, not that there was anything wrong with that, but he doubted his mother would approve of the type of man he was growing into.
So he continued on being what he was becoming, a gambler, and a fighter who took advantage of the arena duels to make his money and his fame. Eventually that fame would reach the ears of a mercenary group, the Black Dogs, who seemed to take a liking to his ability to change luck to be in his favor. They approached Alister, who swiftly declined, stating that he had no reason to be a sell sword when he was making a great deal of money just being on his own, and doing his own thing. The Black Dogs would not take no for an answer. So, they changed tactics, and targeted his livelihood by putting law enforcement on his tail, and by making up lies about him to all of the local dueling grounds to insure he couldn't make a living in his normal methods. Even when Alister returned to street hustling he found himself being forced out of his normal habits and forced into a position of being on the run from the authorities or lacking the normal clientele who were beginning to catch on to his methods. Realizing that he had no choice, as all of the normal methods he was so used to at this point were now not working, and also realizing that his mother still needed his continued help, Alister joined the Black Dogs. Begrudgingly at first and oblivious to the fact that they had made his life worse just so that they could add him as an asset.
Joining at the age of thirteen, Alister was inducted rather quickly into the lifestyle of the mercenary group, and how they operated outside of any sovereignty, doing as they please to the beat of their own drum. While that was something Alister indeed enjoyed, he did not like how their operations were handled, or the vast majority of the people seemingly working for them as most of them were no more than brutish thugs. Still, their leader Howling Blade (a code name), took an interest in Alister instantly as he was forced to put his skills on display against a more veteran member of the group as an initiation ceremony. Alister decimated the veteran member, utilizing his swordsmanship skills taught to him by his mother, and his own ability to bend luck through the power of what he was beginning to call his "sacred weapon". When told to kill the veteran member, Alister refused, throwing aside his sword, and telling the leader of the organization to "blow him". Howling Blade laughed, clearing what was becoming a tense situation, and offered to train the young man in the way of his own style as to grow into a much more complete fighter. Alister, while not wanting to accept help from such a man, decided it would be better to not spit in the face of the leader of a band of mercenaries a second time. Especially when he was surrounded by his lackeys.
So, Alister trained with the Howling Blade, but it wasn't as simple as that either. He wouldn't just receive training from him, but from several other members of the organization as well, and in the process quickly found out that there were multitudes of species who were part of the group. Sometimes he would leave the Sugiuran realms to be trained by weird men with holes in their chests, other times he would have to go deep into the shadowy parts of this other place to learn from beings that just didn't feel right to be around. All the while, he would have to work on performing missions, and the missions were not for the faint of heart. Most of them were extortion missions, but there were a few where a show of force, or even killing was required. By the time eight years had passed, Alister had grown extremely numb to the killing, and though he remained semi-defiant toward the Howling Blade, he realized that defying the man was not an option. He had seen what the Howling Blade did to traitors and what the organization was capable of doing to those who snitched on their operations. And though he wasn't a coward, he wasn't a man who wanted to see himself murdered just because he had his own will still intact.
He continued to give money to his mother, which could now be considered blood money he supposed, and continued to use her as a center of strength for himself, to keep him steady in the turbulent waters he was swimming through. One day, however, his world came crumbling down on him. Like many months before, Alister placed the bag of coins on the doorstep to his mother's home, and awaited her arrival after knocking on her door and moving to hide. He waited for a very long time before finally curiosity got the best of him, moving over to the door, and opening it he found the stench of death awaiting him, a smell he had become all too familiar with by working for the Black Dogs. Rushing to the back, Alister would find his mother, sprawled out on the floor, and dead. He would do as many a son would do for their mother and buried her, mourning, and crying as a man would at the loss of someone he deeply cared for. While Alister hadn't known his mother very well and had left her so that she could survive, she was still his mother, and the effect of her death weighed heavy upon him. He, however, would not have time to mourn the loss of the only family he had ever known.
The Howling Blade had a large job for Alister to do, so large in fact that it would easily set Alister up for the future, and maybe even the whole organization if they could pull it off. Putting Alister in lead, as over the eight years he had served he had become a lieutenant, and operated as one of the Howling Blades' top soldiers, and giving him a crew of eight of his finest men, he sent him on his way to kill someone of great importance. Alister had killed politicians before, but on the realization that he would be killing the Queen of the East, Alister straight up refused, and even more so eradicated the eight hand picked men who would not defy the Howling Blades' orders. He would never reveal his face to the Queen or her daughter who was present, but Alister would save them before rushing off into the night, and going into hiding as to avoid the wrath of the Howling Blade. Sometimes, however, things just aren't that easy.
