A Much-Needed Signal Boost[Yaksha/Emilia]
Sun Nov 05, 2017 11:03 pm
Yaksha, The Anthropophagus
Some things never changed. Vegas was one of them; a bastion to immutability, even under demon rule. So much was as it always had been. There were no shortages of casinos, no shortages of rubes waiting to be fleeced, and most importantly...no shortage of cathedrals. Many were disappointing to behold, designed for drunken souls that had little care for the finer points of the ritual itself. It had taken a long time to find one that truly captured the reverence of the circumstance; Yaksha wasn't one to believe that god existed in every church or anything of that sort. If there was a God, then Yaksha would have cheerfully spat on his shoes. But even he had to admit he was awed into silence by the cathedral he'd found. It was a place that truly made one feel infinitesimally small...and yet somehow, remarkably important despite that smallness.
He rested in one of the pews, a pair of sunglasses over his eyes and a pack of cigarettes in his hands. He took one out periodically, placing it in his mouth, and then inhaling slowly, then exhaling. Each time, it seemed to go on a little longer, as if he were trying to get the high of the tobacco without actually committing the sacrilege of smoking indoors. But it was clear something was weighing heavy on his mind, as he continued to fiddle with the pack of smokes.
It wasn't often Yaksha himself sent out the invitations, and this time he had a lot at stake. More than he'd ever admit to, even privately. This one could be the great unifier, something that would give him the staying power he needed to be well on his way to his true goal. But he had to play his cards right, and ease into it. He'd fucked things up too many times up to now, and this may well be his last chance to really win his spot in the echelons of history.
"Don't keep me waiting too much longer. The anticipation is killing me, Emilia."

Emilia carefully observed the beautiful cathedral, and touched the sacred mosaics from the outside. She whispered a quick prayer to the mother Mary stature, standing vigilantly beside the entrance, before she entered the religious monument. Emilia was not the most devoted believer, but she preferred the comfort, of believing in an afterlife, that everything in life was good. Emilia was expecting the cathedral to be empty, especially at this time of the hour, but there was a stranger sitting among on of the many wooden benches.
Emilia could only see the back of the stranger, she winced harder to make out a package of cigarettes clutched in his hand. She shook her head at the mischief of the stranger, smoking in a church? ReallyShe thought to herself, and sighed dissaprovingly. None of the cigarettes were actually lit, however it was still odd to bring cigarettes to such a sacred sanctuary. She walked towards the stranger, and confiscated the pack of smokes from his hands.
"You shouldn't of brought this here!" She crossed her arms, and slid the pack into her pockets. She sat down near the edge of the bench, beside the stranger.
"I'm usually not one to judge, but what brings you here? You don't look like the regular visitor." Emilia turned her head to have a closer view of the naughty stranger.

Yaksha, The Anthropophagus
The hands offered no resistance as his cigarettes were pryed from his hands, lips simply curling up into a faint, amused smile as he examined her from behind the glasses. He rose, and rose, and rose, towering over her as he approached the crucifix prominently displayed in the center of the room, and rose his hands to it. He never looked around, never so much as paused, as he spoke in a slow, nearly hypnotizing cadence.
"If the offering is a burnt offering of the herd, you are to offer a male without defect. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep or the goats, you are to offer a male without defect. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ‘If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, you are to offer a dove or a young pigeon. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. Leviticus 1: 1-17."
He allowed the words to sink in for a few long moments, hands folded solemnly over his pelvis as he sank his head forward. One could almost be led to believe from his stance and the stillness with which he rested there, that the man was deep in prayer, or some similar act of supplication. Faint, ever so faint sounds could be heard emanating from his lips, as if he were holding a conversation with himself. It went on for nearly a full minute, before he turned around, and then nodded his head faintly.
"Tobacco did not exist in the time of Christ. Not in those demesnes that knew his rule. Tobacco was a western crop. To many Native Americans, many Mayans, tobacco was a substance which induced visions of such potency and intensity that they made one closer to god. Of course, that was when it was taken rectally, in amounts one would be hard-pressed to manage merely by smoking. The natives to this continent and the travelers from afar in fact often would sit over a burnt offering of tobacco, to discuss their gods and their treaties. Do you feel well-versed enough in the Christian faith to declare that God would not have found the smell of burning tobacco an aroma pleasing to him? Perhaps you find it disrespectful, but there are few things in this world that aren't up for debate."
He looked at her, his expression not conveying the faintest hint of smugness, his gaze unreadable behind the glasses, and his stance every bit as still as a lizard on a rock. He simply watched her, letting a hanging, painful, almost hungry silence hang in the air. He approached one step at a time, then two, and then bowed deeply, at the waist. It was a strangely stiff, very formal motion from a man who seemed almost completely unsuited to the circumstance. His suit was midnight black, the sort of somber thing one normally reserved for especially grave occasions.
"Please don't give me any more excuses to launch off on some relativistic drivel. It's not what either of us wants to hear right now. Let's stay focused to the task at hand. You're the idol Emilia, yes? In America, for the time being?"

Emilia blinked at the stranger's comment, if felt as though she had been lectured when she was about to chastise him for smoking on holy grounds. She flushed slightly, and reached into her pocket, to fondle with the pack of cigarettes she had confiscated from the stranger.
"I don't know what nonsense you are going on about, but it is unwise to be disrespectful in someone else's home. Churches are considered the homes of God, and to smoke in his sanctuary is unruly." Her glared at the stranger and put a hand to her hips. "Jesus, drove the merchants and everybody disrespecting the home of God out."
"I do not claim to be the spokesperson of God, and I am no way representing the entire Christian community. You speak of the scent of tobacco to be pleasing to other false deities, but you failed to mention the smell of burning tobacco to be offensive to some deities as well." Emilia pulled out the box of cigarettes and placed it on the palm of the stranger. "Just don't light one up."
Emilia blushed when the stranger approached her and bowed. She was not one to usually judge a book by its cover, but she was surprised by the mans actions based on his appearance.
"Yes, I am Emilia, the idol." She nodded at the man, and extended a hand out for him to shake.

Yaksha, The Anthropophagus
"I will respectfully disagree with your opinion, but I don't see it as especially productive to derail the conversation. Suffice to say that I see no reason why those who first wrote the Bible wouldn't have included tobacco as a suitable burnt offering to their God."
Without ever raising his head, without so much as looking at her, the man's hand slid forward, touching against hers...but he didn't shake her hand, simply pressed a pair of fingers against the vein in her arm, as if he were taking her pulse at a doctors' office, or something of the like. He remained there, motionless, for nearly thirty seconds, before withdrawing his hand and rising to his full height once more; was it just a trick of the light, or was he a bit taller now?
He spoke in that same booming, resonant voice, hand sweeping around himself.
"Gods change, but on a scale too slow for us mere mortals to fathom. Like the growth of trees, or movement of tectonic plates. Once, Jesus was depicted as a sunburnt man, one who could've fit in amongst the egyptians. Then, he was a white man. Once, Jesus's birthday was on a day of no consequence. Then, the pagans who once worshiped the cycle of crop harvest and sewing soon found they were instead worshiping the life and death of a man they had never met. The gospel changes. The word changes. With every retelling, with every translation, it mutates just a bit. The same way humans do, with successive generations. This era's god would seem quite ridiculous to the gods of the 21st century."
He towered over Emilia, expression knowing, almost amused as he circled towards the doorway, leaning against it.
"You're far from home, Emilia. Why don't you tell me what brought you here?"
