It's Good to be Back, or Bad... [Snopy, Steiner, Private ask before joining]
Thu Jul 13, 2017 9:03 am
Five Years. Five long bittersweet years.
The clouds loomed heavily overhead as the streets lay quiet, it's usual travelers remaining indoors, prepared for the incoming rain. Dull. Dreary...gray. At least somewhat. Occasionally a car would go by, or the stray inhabitant on his way to whatever task was at hand.
How I remember this.
The quiet though, oddly didn't make the land seem dead and bleak. Not even the thick cloud layer overhead could do that. Anyone who could sense the essence of life, would sense life abound. Anyone who could sense spiritual power, likewise would sense spirit.
I wonder how much has changed.
Occasionally you could hear music that the walls could not contain. TV shows, the sounds of videos. Sometimes even the chatter of people, a party or two no doubt. The outskirts were dangerous, and it could be everyone for themselves sometimes, but the spirit of man was not so easily contained. Things happened, things get destroyed, but that's why they're built to last. The buildings, a relic of a bygone century. Still, while life goes on, things aren't safe.
The slums are nearby...
For Snopy, this was unbelievably familiar. In days past, before even his death at 18, he fought many battles on the outskirts. Driving back the stray hollow and demons who got too feisty. Inside the dome they can't reach, but out here they can create a bloodbath. In the five years since he lost Kanna, quite literally he couldn't find her, he had not returned. Shadin knew people, he had his ways. Odds were if she showed up he'd have noticed. Yet after giving up, or at least continuing the rest of his life, it still seemed strange to be back.
He knew he could have come out right by the dome, but he had to see everything. A tether to this world he was detached from for so long. He avoided the slums in hopes to avoid a confrontation. After all, not ALL of the outskirts had devolved into a crime infested wasteland. Even if it's the rule of anarchy in most places, doesn't mean they all devolved into slums themselves. It was then that he came across a park, devoid and empty due to the incoming rain, and a place no few children go without their super powered parents. Snopy really didn't intend on lollygagging in the outskirts. He wanted to get into the dome and figure out where to go from there. He wasn't even sure if he should go straight to Shadin or look around the country a bit, as he had been in foreign lands.
As he cut through the park, however, fate would have other plans. He knew hollow were about, that was simple. As the blonde took his first few steps through the grass, his ears twitched. Pulling out a revolver, he leveled it at the trees and pulled the trigger. The sound of wings could be heard as the sound startled birds from the trees and they took to the skies. Down fell a lone figure. To Snopy's incredibly honed eye, he could see it. A hollow, clearly built for hiding in the trees, falling to the earth. A hole directly through the eye socket of the mask.
Spinning his gun once around his finger by the trigger, 4 more hollow came screeching out, of similar stature. pulling the trigger 3 more times, 3 more confirmed kills, all through the eyes. Spinning the gun around his finger a few more times, he spun around 360 and pulled the trigger one more time, this time just going straight through the mask, shattering it, and the creature's entire head. Five more souls purified. Holstering the gun in it's place by one of his blades. Two guns, two Zanpakuto. It took more to even draw one weapon than it used to, let alone two. The average hollow, which was admittedly obnoxiously common, tended to go down like this. Still, even with his weapon holstered, he thought he heard something else. Another hollow...or something else? Who knows, maybe both. Still, if it came after him he'd know. Perhaps it was time for him to just continue on his way. What were the odds it would be an event that meant something.

Over two months had passed since the Hero of Honor had returned to the camp site that he had called home for many years since he had began to train in isolation. To him it was a sight for sore eyes. The old patchwork tent, the self-made fire pit that he had crafted to cook fish from a nearby river where he got water from, and a large open field nearby which was perfect for training exercises all brought a slight smile to his face as he passed by each thing admiring it as if it had been so long since he had seen it. He supposed a lot had happened to him in two months and that was probably why his emotions were in such flux. He was healed now, whole, and without pain yet looking back at this camp ground that he had abandoned two months ago to travel around the world in a sort of bucket list checking event, he couldn't help, but feel he had outgrown it a little. The once welcoming sight of his former home was now nothing more than a place where he felt uncomfortable. It was like the places that were once so vast and so providing around him were now too small for him to truly enjoy the pleasure of being in them.
He let out a sigh as the realization that this would probably be the last time he came to this particular camping ground hit him like a ton of bricks. He had come here to see his old home, but even now he longed to move on to a place where his training would truly be uninhibited by the lack of space. With one more sigh, Steiner began to do as any person would do when they are moving. He began to pack, solemnly moving to different locations, and stuffing object of import on an emotional level and a practicality level into a backpack and a rather large gym bag. In truth, Steiner didn't have many things that he considered to be truly valuable and he had always traveled light so the packing didn't take very long for him to complete. In fact by about fifteen minutes in, Steiner had managed to pack up the majority of the camp, and for the first time got to see just how empty the spot felt without his belongings strewn about. He paused for a second, soaking in all of the good and bad memories, before lifting the twin bags, and beginning to make a trek for as far away from civilization as he could.
He would have made it pretty far if not for the sound that entered into the forest at the moment he began to walk out into the fields. A rather large and audible gunshot was heard for miles around as Steiner began to look around, confused as to what the hell was going on, and even more so his body entered into a state of high alert. He looked around, his eyes darting around, and looking for signs of conflict as he dropped his duffel bag and backpack on to the ground as he drew his broken sword from its' sheathe. He had received a bit of training from Mirja, nothing to write home about, but he knew that he could more than defend himself even with this broken sword if the need for him to do so arose. His body was tense and his eyes scanned the tall grass around him for visible signs of movement, but he was only met with the gentle swaying of a summer breeze. A few moments passed and Steiner remained tense, but poised. It was then that he heard more gunfire, coming off from in the distance, and the sounds of Hollows wailing in pain and agony.
He didn't hesitate as he made his way through the fields at a brisk pace, hopping over fallen trees, and easily dashing through the vast waves of what looked like an endless grass sea. By the time Steiner began to pull closer to where the sounds of conflict had originated, Steiner's mind began to worry about what sort of scene he was going to walk up on. It wasn't uncommon for Hollows to attack on the outskirts and it wasn't uncommon for vast groups of Hollows to migrate around from place to place looking for meals. Some would call them packs, but Steiner knew better than to assume what the hell they were because most of the time Hollows were unintelligent creatures that were driven by hunger and anger. They didn't perceive things as people like he did. That being said, sometimes Hollows congregated together to assault tougher prey, and even more so to attack groups of people traveling outside of the protection of the city's defenses. It was when he neared what could be called the edge of the forest, heading out to another large field that belonged to one of the few parks outside, that Steiner spotted a rather large congregation of Hollows, all of which were quickly devouring what looked like a Hollow corpse with a hole through its' eye socket.
He counted five as he ducked behind a downed tree and observed what had happened, his mind instantly jumping to the worse possible outcome. Whatever had shot that hollow was more than likely dead and even more so was more than likely digesting in several of those Hollow's stomachs. The ones who had probably not gotten their fill were currently eating their fallen brethren with little care that it had been one of their "pack" moments ago. It made him sick, but he didn't have time to be sick because in that moment he felt a single drop of what appeared to be water fall down on his shoulder. Instinctively he would reach to touch what had fallen on him, only to be met with a sticky substance that appeared to be....saliva! It dawned on him in that moment that there weren't five Hollows, but six. Looking up immediately, a rather weird looking Hollow jumped down from the tree tops, and Steiner rolled in response. The creature, who's body resembled a monkey, was camouflaged perfectly for what it had been doing earlier.
Hiding in plain sight in the trees above, Steiner wondered just what sort of state he would have been if the creature had kept its' mouth shut. For now, he couldn't think about such things. He had to defeat the creature in front of him before it decided to make a meal of him. For a second there was silence between the two, as both of them stood firm, and watched for movement, but the Hollow would be the first to make its' move. However, this Hollow had not been trained by a super fast demon wolf, and as it lashed out at full speed...instinct took over. Steiner spun around it, looking like he was dancing, and casually used his sword to slice right through its' mask. Its' horrible scream filled the air as it tried to rear back for a second go, only to find Steiner's sword impaling it straight through the bottom of its' jaw right into its' brain. The creature shook for only a second, one agonizing second as black blood spewed all over Steiner's vest and khakis.
For a moment, Steiner realized just how far he had came, and just how much better he had become with just a little training from Mirja. He wondered just how much stronger he could become if he continued to train with her? That thought would have to wait as the sound of five Hollows howling hit Steiner's ears. The death screams of their fellow pack member had drawn unwanted attention to Steiner and now as he turned to look he could see the beasts booking it toward him as fast as they could. "Shit...", Steiner said to himself as he turned away from them, still clutching his sword, and made a run for it. He needed to get to familiar territory, he had mapped the field outside of this cluster of trees, and it would be the ideal place to fight a group of beasts such as this. But it would take a miracle to live through all of this and he didn't know if he had the necessary skill to deal with five Hollows as he doubted his current level of skills were capable of dealing with this many at the same time. He would try, but there were no guarantees.

On a normal day, that would have been that. Five dead hollow and he could move on. He had killed them rather cleanly, and at this point most others nearby would have decided he wasn't worth it. A small part of him thought maybe he should hunt them down. In days gone past he would have wanted to hunt them down, but was unable to deal with their numbers alone. Skilled as he was in Kido, being weak enough to require incantations didn't exactly make it good for dealing with large numbers. These days he could take them down en masse, but the spark wasn't there. It hadn't been for five years. He could sense their location, each and every one. And hoo boy were there a lot of them. He could go to each and every one of them and purify them. Yet there were so many. He had killed thousands of them on his search for Kanna. Did it change anything? He hoped. He knew on a grand scale it means nothing, but who knows. He knows he saved at least a few people. Yet a 5 year wild goose chase can take the fire out of almost anyone. Even if he knew early on there was little hope, it didn't feel good to go home without answers. Now though, he wanted to just move on and get on with his life. Those hollow were irrelevant. He'd kill any foolish enough to take him on or come into his vicinity, and move on his merry way. He had already made some good distance when he felt something else in the area, moving towards where he fought the hollow. It was distinctly...not a hollow. Snopy sighed, whatever it was, he could feel it was about to get in way over it's head.
That's when he heard it, the scream of a hollow. Whatever it was, it had just quite clearly killed one. Yet, like a hornets after someone has disturbed the nest, he felt all of them converging immediately on the location of the unknown signature.
Shit.
They were already upon whatever it was, and he couldn't help but have a bad feeling about the sheer number of stacked hollow. Still he didn't have time to waste. Mixing his immense speed with Shunpo, he covered the large distance in mere moments. The five on the man were not the only ones, so he wasted no time. Yes, it was a man. Armed with a blade, as he should be in such dangerous territory, but likely outclassed heavily. From above the man would hear it. Snopy, body laid horizontal, drew his revolvers. Taking his shot, he made yet another hole in a hollow's eye, energy and smoke billowing out as the hollow died, surrendering to purification. His target was the one closest to this man, giving him a bit more breathing room. Allowing himself to fall back down, he flipped himself upright and landed on one knee, revolvers in each hand. The remaining 4 hollow took a step back almost in shock.
"I do apologize, but well, no one is guaranteed a future. Your story simply ends here." Brandishing the revolvers, he brought his arms up level, and just fired 4 times. Four quick pops. Three dead hollow, all through the eye sockets. The fourth however, was far stronger than the previous three. It lunged up into the air, dodging the shot, and then seemed to vanish. Stronger than it's nearby ilk, most certainly more than strong enough to kill any normal human, if only from the super human speeds. Standing perfectly still, Snopy waited, listened. He holstered his revolvers for the moment. At first, there was silence. Then he heard a branch crack to his right. Almost instantly he drew his sword and held it vertically to his side, hilt up, casually blocking the big meaty claw aimed directly for his brain. His physical strength was comparatively weak to his other traits, but against the standard hollow it was more than enough.
With a quick parry, he shoved the hollow's arm aside and sheathed his sword. Before the hollow could regain it's posture, Snopy gripped the sheath, and with the other hand drew his blade and in one quick draw chopped off the hollow's arm. Giving it only that one moment, he reoriented his blade and slashed the beast in half. Sheathing his weapon, he let out a sigh. "It's not often a man brandishing naught but a sword goes towards gunshots." He turned to this man, looking him up and down. "It'll be quiet for now, but it's probably not over. Might want to be a little more cautious in picking your fights in the future. You aren't injured are you?" The man didn't appear injured, but you never know. Still, he had to refrain from straight up questioning why someone of such a low power would run towards a gunshot in a place like this. It didn't make sense, but it would likely be rude to just say outright.

A short chase through familiar territory wasn't exactly what the hero of honor had in mind when he had returned to this place. What had once been a simple trip to pick up his backs and resources had escalated into a life or death situation after all and Stein was none to happy about it. Before he had left this zone previously he had cleared a path for people to go to and fro on, but it seemed that now that path had absolutely been compromised. He grunted, as he barely dodged what looked like a spike that more than likely one of the Hollows pursuing him had used to hit him from afar. The fact that these beasts were able to do this forced Stein to realize that more than likely running wasn't the answer to his current predicament. Though skilled, Steiner doubted that he could take on five Hollows at the same time, let alone survive such an encounter without powers. He just needed to time himself properly for this and he knew of a specific location that he could go to that would be optimal for a fight against these beasts.
He leaped over a fallen tree that had crashed over a river that he had once used as a watering hole to keep himself alive, he used that as a land mark to find where he needed to go, and started rushing to the right, only come to a dead end. A wall had been built here, belonging to a camping ground of some kind, to keep the Hollows from entering inside, and now Steiner was locked out with five hungry beasts chasing after him. It had been maybe a few minutes since this chase had began and now with his back against the wall, literally, Steiner readied himself for the incoming assault. He knew that if he was to increase his chances of survival he would need to quickly strike them down, one by one while deflecting their blows, and going for killings blows on them, after all even he knew basic Hollow physiology. Thankfully, Steiner wouldn't need to draw more blood as a mysterious stranger arrived to turn the tides in an instant. Combining swordplay with gunplay, the man finished off the threats without breaking so much as a sweat, and the young man found himself watching with absolute fascination as he did so.
He wondered just what sort of training this man had put himself through if he could dismiss foes of this level with relative ease. He had many questions, but those would have to wait as he listened to the man's words. The man would be met with silence as Stein cleaned off his sword with a rag from his left pocket. For a moment this silence would last, but then abruptly end as Stein made his intentions known to the stranger. "[color=aqua]A lot of people come through this way, When I heard a gunshot...I assumed the worst and rushed as quickly as I could to the scene. I used to live here so I wanted to make sure that everything was alright and if it wasn't...to lend them some aid if I could.", Steiner said making sure to point out the reason he had rushed this far with his blade drawn as he had.
Though he assumed as a person of his current level of strength it wouldn't make much sense that he had ran as fast as he could into the jaws of hell and face what some would call "mortal danger", especially for someone he didn't know. But that was just who Steiner was. He had been honing his skills here for years, killing Hollows in the fields, and saving travelers with no need for reward or praise. He did it because he wanted to and because helping others satisfied him more than a bundle of money or the promise of a warm meal. Though he never did decline a well cooked meal. "I'm Steiner and I am sorry to have inconvenienced you with the situation I put myself into.", he said with a quaint bow to introduce himself and to apologize to the stranger for inconvenience him. He sheathed his broken sword, while shoving the bloodied rag into his khaki's pocket with little thought to the stains it would probably cause.
I'm still the one being saved regardless of the training I started with Mirja. Damnit. Steiner though this to himself while smiling broadly at the stranger. He had to get stronger, not just for himself, but for others. He didn't want to be saved every time he tried to do something heroic or he went off to fight some evil creature that bumped in the night. He needed to start doing things on his own and he didn't know how he was going to do it, but he sure as hell was going to work hard to make at least that a reality.

The man ignored him for a bit, cleaning off his blade before sheathing it. Finally he answered and it figures. A kid. That was all Snopy could think. Only a kid or a fool would with so little strength look at a situation such as this and even think that was a good idea. Clearly if the hollow caught him like that he wasn't even watching his surroundings properly. Hell, going prey stalker on hollow while being weak enough he doubted he could sense other's locations in itself was a bad idea. Snopy sighed. It wasn't the first time he saw this. A man who wanted to be the hero, but had a bad habit of running into danger til it actually managed to kill him. Somehow Snopy always ended up being the one to prolong their life, and either get them to chill the fuck out or end up probably dying right after he left. "Consider that situation had killed me. What chance do you suppose you would have had then?" He asked bluntly. This wasn't cockiness, this was common sense. He was a Shinigami who could match a Captain of the Gotei. He's given powerful Arrancar and demons a run for their money, or at least matched them. Anything a powerless but spiritually aware person would basically be disintegrated by. He took a moment,
brushing a stray strand of hair from his face "You're a human, spiritually aware. No powers so to speak, probably relying on simply your own standard physical attributes and technique in which to survive, correct?"
That's what they always were, and what energy he felt emanating from this individual felt entirely un-honed. It was simply there, swirling around. It was an incredibly safe bet to say he was right. "And it wasn't really that much of an inconvenience. I knew they were there, I had a feeling I'd have to purify them eventually. Was just hoping I could go 5 seconds without soiling my cuffs." Snopy brushed some dirt off his overcoat. "If death is waiting for me at the end of this, well it'd best have a change of wardrobe." He still had no plans of dying but after everything he had been through he wouldn't be surprised. Still, even if he wasn't exactly happy, he'd press on all the same. "Snopy Saika." He spoke as he straightened everything out on his outfit. "Nice to meet you, though I suppose my lecture has left you feeling quite the opposite."

He could see the judgement and condemnation of his actions written all over the way that the man reacted when he explained his action's thoroughly. Not that he cared what this person thought of him or if he was judging him unfairly, the fact was Steiner had been doing this hero things for quite a while, and had put himself into dangerous situations that had been much worse than the one he had just faced, but he had still walked out alive, injured, but alive. It was an occupational hazard and Steiner didn't care if the powerful being in front of him didn't care for his "recklessness" because it was that recklessness that had saved lives on multiple occasions. Sometimes, you had to take a risk to save a life, and Steiner would continue to practice his brand of heroism with or without the acceptance of this man in front of him.
"You are asking me what I would have done if you got downed? I would fight them of course, I planned to until you showed up, and killed them all. You may think it is childish or reckless or whatever you think it is, but every moment that passes by with inaction is another moment that someone can die. Sometimes you don't get the chance to think about what you have to do and you just do what you have to do.", Steiner said with absolute confidence in what he was saying. The man may have judged him a child, but in all honesty sitting their, and calculating variables when someone's life was on the line was not something Steiner would do. Especially in a place like this where Hollow attacks were extremely common and people's lives were constantly in jeopardy. Steiner had saved his fair share of people passing by this place and fought off his fair share of Hollows during his time here. It came with the territory of living off the grid.
"And my favorite color is blue and I like to read books on swordsmanship...sorry, I'm used to these lectures by now. Beings more powerful than me telling me to play with kid gloves while people are dying and struggling to survive out here. Yes, I've lived off my own skills, and have saved people with these skills. Yes, a powerless human with the bare ability to sense spirits was capable of saving people.", He was frustrated as he spoke. He was tired of these lectures, of beings stronger than him coming in, and acting like every time he went in and put his neck on the line that he was going to break. He wasn't some piece of fine china, he was a person who had trained under Cirno, a man who was currently being taught by a wolf with a serious case of no-holds-barred, and he was improving at such a frightening rate that he even surprised himself some days. He didn't need these lectures, he wasn't a child. No, he was a blossoming young hero who had huge aspirations when it came to what his future might hold.
"You saved my neck, thanks for that, but in all seriousness you telling me to play it safe kind of ticks me off. I'm former Vanguard, I've seen hell in a hand basket, and though I may appear to be nothing more than some kid out here playing hero...I'm saving people. My first thought will always be what I can do to make sure that someone doesn't die when I could have made a difference. I'm not good with having someone's blood on my hands and mind especially if I could have done something.", Steiner sat down on a nearby log staring dead ahead at the man who had shown up only moments ago to save his life. He had a lot of questions, but at the moment his mind was abuzz with how things had turned out, and frustration was just dominating his mind. He was just tired of the lectures and he wanted to be respected for not resting on his laurels and actually taking some initiative for a change.
For a few seconds there was sort of an awkward silence before finally Steiner began to speak again: "Where did you learn to fight like that anyway, Snopy?

Re: It's Good to be Back, or Bad... [Snopy, Steiner, Private ask before joining]

Snopy turned his head slightly to face Steiner, stopping with brushing of the dirt. He raised an eyebrow. This man would be lucky to live long enough for that hero talk to be properly backed up. In a normal world, back in the days before hollow and demons littered the planet, this man's skill likely would have more than sufficed for anything. In these days though, he's seen more goodhearted people commit combat suicide than he'd like to count. "You aren't the first of your aspirations I've met, and I doubt you'll be the last. Most I've seen die avoidable deaths in winnable fights. Overconfidence has lead to the fall of many nations, remember that and odds are death won't find you. If it would have you'd probably have been a corpse already." He wondered, was Steiner one of the ones who thinks that planning the attack smart automatically means wasting large amounts of time? "You aren't being judged on the decision to take action, I mean you have most of the population beat on that one."
As the man continued though it was clear that this was a recurring issue. He's apparently used to these lectures. That...literally does nothing but prove that Snopy was right. Entirely and utterly right. Still, he let what only devolved into a minor tantrum from this man end before he spoke up again. "You being ticked off REALLY isn't my problem. People aren't saying it for no reason, especially if this is apparently a recurring issue. They're saying it because they saved you and don't want you to end up dead days later. You needed help, they gave it, and they didn't want you dying right after so they're trying to inspire some kind of change that keeps you intact. Maybe you're different. Doesn't change that over the last 5 years at least 20 people like you ignored my advice and got themselves killed within a week. You aren't one of them? Then you have all the time in the world to prove me wrong cause you won't be dead. I REALLY don't have time to listen to bitching. I made an observation on your power level, a statement asking what you would have done if they had killed me. I never once said 'You're too weak go home' or 'Give up'. In fact, until you got defensive I had nothing directly negative to say about your talent besides be more careful. The question on what you would have done was so I could hear your answer. Are you really the hero you think you are? 'I would have fought to make sure it didn't happen again' or 'I'd have come up with a strategy to make sure they can never kill another person again' would have left me confidence, it would have proven there's more to you. The world needs some idealists. Instead I'm left questioning if you have the demeanor to even survive out here."
He let Steiner respond should he wish to, but afterwards he asked about how he got so strong. Unless Steiner's response to his actual lecture was reassuring in his character, he didn't really want to say. Still. "A lot of practice really. My only real teacher wasn't exactly my teacher for sword or gun play. Kido mainly, or...well magic if you don't know what Kido is. She was honestly one of the few I was close to, so didn't have much in the way of a teacher in how to use weapons.
That one was all on me."

Re: It's Good to be Back, or Bad... [Snopy, Steiner, Private ask before joining]

He was right in a multitude of ways and Steiner had heard the 'speech' many times over during the course of his lifespan about being reckless and about running into danger instead of thinking things through. However, Steiner had seen what thinking things through could do, and sometime formulating a battle plan while people were dying or being eaten by things that could give less than a shit if you live or die was not an option. Steiner looked Snopy dead in the eyes, he took all the information he had just lay out in front of him, and was now formulating a response in his head. He didn't want to come off as a jerk or talk about how he was sure Snopy wouldn't have died because that was always an uncertainty in this world and he knew that more than most his age did. He had seen death and had even courted it a year and a half ago when he had been left in the wastes to die by a pack of Arrancar. Yet, he had survived by the skin of his teeth.
"Look, I get what you are saying, and I understand the need for caution. Trust me, if it was as easy as formulating a battle plan before each and every single encounter, then I would do it without question because that is the smart thing to do. But in this world that sort of thing doesn't always work, formulating a plan takes time...I don't have shunpo, I can't teleport...fuck I can't even soul dash, Snopy. One second of planning could equal another family you have to tell that daddy isn't coming home. There is weight to every second, every millisecond in these sort of situations. What I did was wrong and it was reckless, I understand that, but I am tired of telling people that their mom, their son, their father... I'm just tired of telling people they aren't going to see their loved one's again. I used to be Vanguard. I've had my fair share of guys die fighting the good fight and then you have to come tell their loved one's they died. I'm sick of it, I'm sick of a world that you can't walk ten feet outside of Karakura without some kind of sicko or freak looking to end you, eat you, or both.", Steiner spoke with conviction and was standing his ground rather well in front of a man who could probably blow him away without a second thought.
It wasn't like he didn't understand his point of view or why he was chastising him. He understood he was being reckless, but every second mattered out here when you were only as fast as your legs could carry you. "You aren't wrong though... what I do is reckless. But sometimes you need reckless, sometimes you need to throw caution to the wind because in that moment maybe you save somebody. Someone's brother, someone's wife...you want to know more about me, you want to know what I would have done if you died? I would have killed all of the Hollows, I would have found a way to put each of those fucking things six feet under, and then I would have to had to bear the burden of telling your loved one's that you are gone. They would hate me because I wasn't fast enough, they would tell me that I should have died and not you, hell they probably would have tried to get me sent on trial as an accessory to murder, and every night for the rest of my life I would have a recurring nightmare of you telling me I wasn't good enough to save you.", Steiner spoke from experience, there was plenty of it going around the world and Steiner had seen his fair share of action.
"I would use those nightmares to fuel me, as I have ever since I started trying to save people, to get better. I would train twice as hard, I would review what happened that caused this to go down the way it had, and I would have spent every moment remembering how I let you down. You would, as every other night terror I have, make me a better hero. I wouldn't sleep, eat, or bathe until I had corrected the mistakes that costed you your life and I would make damn sure that no one else would die on my watch in the same way ever again.", Steiner rubbed his face for a second as he remembered Snopy had also explained very loosely how he had gotten stronger. There was an awkward silence for a second until finally Steiner spoke up again. "For me, I read books, and study old holovids on past conflicts to prepare myself for whatever life's pretty unsavory surprises are. Still, didn't expect a tree climbing Hollow...gonna have to prepare better for next time.", Steiner said as he let out a rather long sigh before standing up from the log.
"Still, its always good to talk shop with a guy who is stronger than you. Maybe you could give me a few pointers on how to kill Hollows more effectively? If you are willing and you don't think I'm some hopeless wannabe hero.", Steiner said as he stretched a bit to ease the tension in his body.

Re: It's Good to be Back, or Bad... [Snopy, Steiner, Private ask before joining]

Was this guy for real? His rambling could have been cut down to a fourth of it's content and still made the point. With current relations backstory wasn't really Snopy's concern. The man had something to prove, and it was very concise. Was it even worth him trying to be a hero instead of being useful in a safer profession. Not everyone was cut out to be some kind of vigilante. Most weren't. It is true, not everyone who dies wasn't cut out to be one. After all danger is part of the job description. You don't get away unscathed every time, and it only takes one unfortunate error to end you. Normally people who do reckless things just weren't worth Snopy's time. Call it population control, call it having better things to do. Call it not having time for tomfoolery such as that. Not that silly things were bad, on the contrary before the last 5 years sapped something out of him he did enjoy a healthy dose of appropriate nonsense. Still, at least Steiner seemed to have the right things driving him. It was always suspicious when people wanted to be the hero. Well, not that desire at it's core. Many want that. When people go so heavily out of their way though, it makes you wonder if it's because they want to help, or if it's for glory and fame. When they're talented and can find success, doing the right thing for the wrong reasons was fine (if that reason was as harmless as wanting fame and the right thing was saving lives), but the less talented tended to just get themselves killed with improper drive.
Snopy remained silent as the man spoke, analyzing every single ounce of his being. His voice, his tone, his body language. Once Steiner stopped, but before the conversation moved to the training, Snopy began to laugh. Really hard. It was quiet and slow at first, the volume and intensity rising as it went. Not manial, the kind of laugh someone does before someone goes "You're hopeless, but you've convinced me." "Hahahahah, ahahahahah, ahahahahahahah! Well put!" He hadn't laughed like this in at least a year...or laughed in a year really. Probably would take some time before laughing became a regular thing again. "You could have made your point in like a quarter of the words, but well put. There are a lot of people who decide to be heroes, but it's when someone decides to be a hero that the whole purpose is lost most often. I still think there's a level of naivete in it, you can't save everyone and it isn't your fault, but you're well enough aware of the...reality of the situation. Everyone has to do it their own way. Just don't expect the same recklessness from me. I prefer to make sure I live. If someone wants to charge me because I don't want to commit suicide attacking a stronger opponent without a plan or backup coming, then let them try. Thankfully not too much is so strong I can't fight it head on and have at least a 50/50 shot.
Bit of a free pass. Also being faster than most makes beating a hasty retreat easier too."
He listened as the man described how he learned through books and holotapes. Well that was a start, but had no sustainability. "As a reader myself, I can safely say that reading alone won't get you very far. There's only so far a book can get you, holotapes work somewhat, but again. You'd better have a better way of training than that if you want this hero thing to be your career. And as for a tree climbing hollow, we're in a park. That needs to be expected. Even if many don't specialize in it, it's a good hiding place. Anywhere really, you need to be on the lookout for anything from anywhere. Can't live this life for long if you aren't on constant alert." Probably easier said than done, he still had vestige sensory powers from his time as a human, heightened senses from being a straight up marksman. He had better senses than the average man. "And well, I'm sure you know the basic. Aim for the head, but try not to shatter the mask. It's usually far harder to penetrate and if you don't get a clean cut into the skull you might see who the hollow once was...and if you do see it you have to show no hesitation. That's really the main thing. Most hollows regenerate so delimbing is only a good temporary solution. There isn't really a magic bullet though when it comes to handling them...unless you're like me and literally shoot magic bullets, but the point is besides taking out the head there is no one size fits all solution. You've gotta analyze your opponent as you fight him, figure out if they have patterns. Perhaps a weakness will inadvertently become clear.
If you punch them, and your hand burns, keep direct contact to a minimum. If it flies? Try to find out a way to ground it, most flyers aren't as good on the ground. Adaptability is key."

Re: It's Good to be Back, or Bad... [Snopy, Steiner, Private ask before joining]

Steiner had always been a long winded sort of guy, he liked to tell people why he was doing what he was doing, and what really drove him in detail. Especially when he was questioned about certain aspect of who he was or how he functioned on a basic level or how he would respond to certain situations. This was just part of who he was and as Snopy began to laugh at him a tad, Steiner looked at him in confusion as to why he was laughing at him in the first place. After listening to his explanation and hearing him out for why he was laughing and what he could have done instead, Steiner nodded his head in agreement before grinning at the being in front of him. "I suppose you are right, there is a level of naivite to what I do, but to be honest I would rather be naive than cynical. Living a cynical life means you will always look for the worst in people, I would like to think there is at least some shred of good in every person in some way shape or form, ya know?", as Steiner said this he crossed his arms across his chest.
He had always tried to look at the positives that this world had to offer and when things looked bad he had always tried to be the face of positiveness in those situations. Still, he agreed that there was a certain childish nature to his thoughts, but he wasn't going to change those thoughts just because they were viewed as such. He had to remain adamant on being the type of person he wanted to be and not the type of person that the rest of the world wanted him to be. So, he would keep pushing forward as the man he was now instead of trying to fundamentally change his personality. Though he could definitely put in some work to improve his combat skills and as Snopy began to talk about his reading and viewing habits when it came to holovids he found himself nodding along. "Real world experience is definitely a key. The amount of times I have read up on something and thought I could deploy it in combat only for it to fail...jeeze I've lost count.", Steiner said letting out a chuckle at the realization that all of that reading really didn't matter if he couldn't apply it in a practical form. He would have to work harder to get that sort of stuff in working condition, maybe more instruction in Vastime would do him some good.
"I got a lot way to go, but I can't let inexperience derail my chance to help people, and defend the weak though. It just means I'm going to have to work twice as hard to get better twice as fast to make sure that my recklessness doesn't get me killed, right?", another laugh escaped Steiner's mouth as he grinned at Snopy. Things had got a bit more civil he assumed and he wondered just how much Snopy had gone through to get to the point of power that he was at, and wondered if his path would be similar to his. Though he doubted he would ever wield guns as he thought very poorly of guns in general, but he wondered if he could get as strong as Snopy because it was very clear that he was quite skilled. How long it would take, he didn't know, but at least it was a good goal to strive for right? He would have to put the time in to do that and that meant studying more with Mirja and trying to put his best foot forward to grow on his own, it would definitely take him a long time to get to where he needed to go, but he knew that with hard work, and determination...well maybe he would just become a damn good hero after all.
"It sure would make things easier to have a magic bullet.", Steiner said jokingly as he listened to what Snopy was talking about. It was basically rudimentary combat tactics on how to fight Hollows and it was definitely riveting to hear more about fighting against them as they were one of the more plentiful enemies out in the wastes where he usually trained and practiced nowadays. "So basically I have to be prepared for anything and everything, while also being ready to switch up my style on the fly if things aren't working?", he asked as he looked at Snopy contemplatively. There was a lot information being flung his way and he was doing his best to absorb as much of it as he possibly could to get better at what he was trying to achieve. Every little thing helped.
