Unexpected Guests [Rukia - OPEN]
Wed Mar 08, 2017 1:50 am
The warmth of day radiated against her skin as she emerged out into the courtyard that separated the Manor from the garden grounds. The fresh March air was tranquil as the neatly manicured grass crunched beneath Rukia's sandal clad feet.
Naturally, she was accompanied by three servants — undoubtedly the work of Byakuya, but she didn't mind. In an instant of whimsy, the noble woman removed her feet from her sandals, abandoning them near one of her companions. She paused a moment to take in the tickling sensation that danced across the soles of her feet, before resuming her journey.
The Kuchiki gardens were vast and open, sloping gently down to a copse of perfuming balsam, apple, elder and eucalyptus trees — their scents mingling together in a blend of succulent, caressing nodes of honey, musk, and lemon — an amalgam that both soothes, and refreshes the senses; something that Rukia cherished in her loneliest moments.

The paranoia for his adoptive sister's safety had reached a rather new high as of recent. So much as a scratch was on her, and Byakuya would already be irritated. Ergo, it wasn't much of a surprise that he would entail some level of protection for Rukia -- although, he was still able to think clearly and make sure that it wouldn't be suspicious or worrisome for others who would come across her. Rather, it would seem as if she was being escorted, like any other noble would be.
But, eventually, Byakuya felt that he needed to take it upon himself in order to keep her safe -- a brief moment of pride taking over and causing him to believe that the people that he had sent with her to be inferior to him, and that he would need to be the one to watch over her -- at least, today. After the lack of speaking with her for so long, it felt required of him as the Head of the Kuchiki Family, her brother, as well as for them to be able to catch up after so long.
Thus, Byakuya was quick to dress, even sliding the ages-old Captain's haori over his shoulders as he walked throughout the Kuchiki Family Manor, checking himself over many times, before reaching to his neck and realizing the reason for the consistent check-overs of his attire. While his reaction was rather lack-luster, Byakuya was very annoyed. His scarf was missing. He scoured the manor for it, searching every last nick and cranny that it could possibly be, and it never turned up.
So, with that being said, it was a bit natural for Byakuya to assume that someone had stolen it. But -- just as the thought popped into his head, a new possibility did as well -- what if Rukia had it, or, at the very least, seen it as of recent? Now, there was even more reason for Byakuya to go and accompany Rukia. So, stepping outside, the man's voice would be clear as day as he simply waved his hand and gave a single order to her servants.
"Leave us."
The servants bowed their heads in understanding, silently moving back inside as Byakuya made his way towards his little sister, his features unmoving as he soon came to a stop behind her, his hands behind her back. Silence encompassed the Kuchiki Manor for quite some time before the Angel of the Cherry Blossom broke it with a brief remark.
"There are things that can hurt your feet if you don't keep your footwear on, Rukia."
Taking a step closer, the male peered at his little sister as the tone of his next question turned...almost accusingly.
"I have reason to believe you have something that belongs to me."

"O-Oi... Nii-sama?!" Rukia froze midstep, startled by the sudden appearance of her brother; a pink tinge gracing her cheekbones with its presence — a sign of embarrassment — being caught by Byakuya in such a compromising position. She hadn't even realised he was there. But then again, he was keen on sneaking up on her as of late, like a silent hawk.
As of late, Byakuya had been acting rather strange in regards to Rukia, for it was no secret that Byakuya wasn't always the most doting older brother. Something in him had changed, and the youngest Kuchiki was eager to find out.
"To what do I owe this pleasure, Nii-sama?" She murmured, disregarding his statement about footwear. He knew better. The grounds were kept pristine; there wasn't anything that was going to damage the soles of her feet. But as she rounded the corner on his next statement within her mind, warning bells began to chime.
— Kuso, she thought. He knows I have the scarf... —
"What are you looking for, brother? And... Why would you believe me to have it, whatever it is?" She asked, refusing to meet his leering gaze with her own, fearful her eyes might give her away.

Byakuya mentally cursed himself at such a pathetic statement about her footwear. He knew that the grounds were kept at the peak of safety and cleanliness. So much as a single block was out of place, the entire pathway would be redone to ensure that it would not happen again. So, it wasn't a surprise that Rukia was to ignore something like that -- it was an absurd thing for even him to say.
Yet, there was something that Byakuya could tell from her that gave way to his suspicions. Her expressions, her body language -- the unwillingness to look him in the eye, the stuttering in her voice, everything was slowly giving way to the one feeling that Byakuya could tell, even through just a glance: guilt. His eyes scanned over his adoptive sister, looking over her shihakusho to see if it was anywhere on her person.
And then, he saw it. The small glimpse of the item peeking out from the neck of the robe, sticking out like a very subtle sore thumb. The blank, yet ever so ominous expression never ceased to bore into the core of Rukia's soul. Ergo, the male took one final step forward as he briefly stated his reason for suspicion.
"My scarf...has gone missing. It is nowhere within the Manor."
His eyes briefly lowered to the neck of her shihakusho, eying the scarf once more to confirm that it was indeed what he saw and believed it to be.
"You are the only person to have entered the Manor over that period of time."
He receded, leaning backward to stand upright as his hands remained behind his back, with only his eyes narrowing at his little sister.
"I know you're not stupid. Give me the scarf, Rukia. I know that you have it around your neck, it's tucked under your shihakusho."

"U-Un..." She acknowledged, nodding her head, bowing at the neck with shame; her gaze focused on a small patch of the perfectly manicured grass... She could not bear to look him in the face while she uttered the words that were dancing at the back of her throat, fighting to break free from her demure.
"Nii-sama... I..." Her palate bobbed visibly, and she swallowed hesitantly, before continuing:
"I'm fond of the scarf because it belongs to.... You." Rukia's voice broke, now barely above a faint, gentle whisper.
In all of the time spent with the Family, Rukia had always yearned to be close to Byakuya, for he, after the death of Hisana, was the only source of stability in her tumultuous life. Her adoption was by far, the most pivotal point in her existence; it gave her small Rukongai beginning, meaning. For Rukia, Byakuya wasn't just her brother...
Before Ichigo and the rest, he was her pillar of strength, hidden behind his cold treatment of her. Could it be the very reason why her Bankai, Tulpa, and Shikai manifest ice? A mere reflection of her brother's actions and feelings towards her?
The Royal Kuchiki ached more than anything to change that... To mean something to him, like he to her — to be seen as someone indispensable — someone he wouldn't be so keen to throw away, as what nearly happened at the Sokyoku.
Maybe, just maybe, she would be. The rest is up to him.

ANGEL OF THE CHERRY BLOSSOM
Artist: RWBY - Song: Home
If he were being honest, Byakuya only thought of this entire charade as a game that Rukia wished to play to get him to spend more time with him. In a way, it was similar to Yoruichi, all that time ago, when he was much younger -- as was she. But, even now, the Royal Kuchiki was not very fond of games. His icy demeanor only had left him more determined and serious than ever.
Yet...the truth behind the thievery of his scarf shocked him. It wasn't just a game, it wasn't because she wanted to spend time with her brother -- rather, her reasoning was quite the opposite. His neglect as of recent had taken its toll on Rukia. She wanted to feel close to him, and she had taken his scarf as a means to do so. Byakuya froze in his tracks -- for once, unable to think of anything to say or do as a response to this.
After all, something such as neglect for his younger, adoptive sister was the last thing that he thought of. His eyes closed, and his arms remained at his sides. The man went still, unmoving once more as he had done for so very long in an attempt to bring himself to a higher power in order to fulfill his promise, even in this new day and age. The inner conflict of what he should do raged within him like a storm. Yet, as always, his face remained blank and featureless.
Finally, after so long, the sound of movement engulfed the garden again.
The ever so quiet shuffle of his shoes as he stepped forward and reached outward, wrapping his arms around his sister and pulling her into a soft, warm embrace. He said nothing -- but his actions were more than enough to make up for it. He hadn't been able to truly realize how much he meant to her, and how much she looked up to him -- much like how Byakuya expected the best of her, seeing her as the shining pride that he would fight anything to protect.
Thus, only three words were able to escape the Kuchiki's lips, his voice as gentle as his embrace.
"Forgive me, Rukia."
