THE BROKEN RAVEN

HENREX ASTILLON

Why did Antarctica have to be so GOD DAMN COLD?! Even with every single scarf, covering, anything that Henrex could cover himself with, it still was incredibly cold. Even Henrex's normally cold hands were feeling tingly. The black clad boy was shivering in his boots with each and every step he took. He had came to the bottom of the earth to search for something. What, exactly? He didn't know. He felt something calling for him. It wasn't spiritual. It was demonic.

The young Hybrid was interested to see what the source of this strange demonic energy was. It seemed to be calling for him. Luring him in. However, it didn't feel discomforting or anything. It felt relaxing to be called in by this unknown force. It was... calming. Looking from left to right, Henrex quietly sat down in the snow, placing is gloved hands behind him, leaning back by the slightest, before his eyes looked towards the sky.

He had read in storybooks as a young kid that there was something called an "aurora" that came from the North and South Poles. He was close to the South Pole, so perhaps he could see one eventually? Smiling to himself under the scarf that covered his mouth, nose, and left eye as always, his right eye closed as Henrex rose once again. Looking around, he couldn't see anything now. Only the white of snow. A silent breath came from the Raven as a shiver went down his spine.

A icy fog began to rise as Henrex stood. His eye darted around, looking for anyone. He was hoping he could just get this done without any conflict. If there were others after this, whatever was calling him could be dangerous. He had to get this quickly, and without conflict. Quickly straightening his clothing, Henrex resumed walking through the snow. The crunching of ice and snow sounded out quietly through the frozen land. Bringing his arms to each other and rubbing them for warmth, Henrex felt the chill of the cold once again. However, the call felt stronger than ever.

Perhaps he would not be alone in this....

The cold was getting to him. His form shuddered with each and every step he took. Henrex's body felt like it was just going to stop working from the cold that Antarctica was hurling throughout his body. But he had to keep going. Whatever was calling him....he had to get it. Releasing a single, cold, shaky breath, Henrex's hands gripped his arms tight, trying to keep himself from shaking due to the cold. Looking at his hands, Henrex shakily tucked the end of his gloves into the sleeves of his shihakusho, giving his skin more protection against the furious winds of the Antarctica snow.

Cursing under his breath, Henrex took one slow, frigid step after another to try and keep moving. Snapping his fingers, the sound of the fingers snapping echoed out into the area, before a glow would come from Henrex's back, and the center of the back of his clothing would burst in a circle shape, and two large wings would grow from his back. Spreading as wide as ten feet in total, these wings would lift Henrex off the ground, and he would begin to move forward, aiming to move at high speeds. While the speed would cause his body to grow colder, his speed towards this mysterious energy source would be immense.

Clenching his arms even tighter, Henrex's body continued to shiver from the cold. Snow fell onto his clothing and hair, giving him white specks throughout his form. Shaking his head to clear his hair of this, Henrex would slowly squint to see if he could see anything in front of him. He could see nothing. Just perfect. Sighing gently, Henrex slowly descended to the ground, before his feet touched the ground. He had better stop before he froze to death from the windchill. Slowly drawing his sword, Henrex's Zanpakutō began to generate a black and purple energy from the base of the blade.

With this energy, he would allow it to flow forward, and the energy would solidify, and form a partially transparent barrier mere inches in front of him. This would cause the chilling wind to hit the barrier, forcing the wind to flow around the barrier, and around Henrex. Taking a small moment to release a sigh of relief, Henrex would start to put one foot in front of the other, moving forward, as would the barrier that he had created, which would cause the wind to simply do the same as before. Part around the barrier.

Gripping his arms tighter than ever, Henrex continued onward. The presence was closer than ever. Hopefully he could get whatever it was, get out, and warm up.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Niflheim was not a stranger to the biting cold which had over the centuries become but a tickle to her moon-kissed skin. As her eyes of platinum seemed to gaze out across the landscape, she could take in it’s lovely trinity, Snow, Cold, Desolation. A thing of harsh truth all it’s own. People died out here in these frigid wastelands, and the quincy who called it home often sat by in silence and let it happen. After the war the quincy had all but vanished into the shadows of both antarctica and even history itself, the current events well. The quincy involvement had become none, absolutely none. It wasn’t because there weren’t quincy however it was simple, the quincy themselves had cut themselves off from the outside world per the message of their sternritter and now elect, Niflheim P. one of the oldest of the quincy and a pure-blood. So now they roamed hidden in caves and waiting, waiting for their chance to come back into the light, something the Queen of Ice planned to happen quite frequently, however why was she here today? It was simple, she had senses something in her reishi field she often kept dispersed around her in varying distances of a mile to two miles, something formed from her otherworldly ability to control the very reishi that existed in the air around her.

So as she let those eyes of piercing platinum roam the landscape, she could sense it stronger than ever, while masking her own reishi her own signature was but a phantom, non existant without a trace to all but the greatest at sensing reiatsu signatures. There she waited atop a crested mound, the snow having compacted to look almost like a titanic wave, frozen by the environment as if a testament to it’s power. Her boots not even touching the snow as she stood atop of a platform of faint dusted blue, snow already piliing on the reishi plate she had formed beneath her feet. Sure the male had been moving quickly like a streak of black on the backdrop of white, but it wasn’t fast enough to escape the quincy’s ever-watchful and hawk-like gaze. Hence as the male was moving across the landscape, the quincy didn’t care as to why he was here however, despite her inherent dislike for shinigami ,which based on energy signature alone she assumed he was. She also assumed like most beings he belonged to some sort of organization or another, and while they might miss them it’d be complicated if k-world or the like began poking their head back in on things in antarctica.

With this logic, quietly, with a minimal amount of energy she started a chain-reaction that was guided by the sole concept of heat, and what would it do? Well it would be simple, manipulating the reishi to the point that it would begin to vibrate all around the shinigami it would do the purpose that it was intended to. It would heat the shinigami up, slowly but surely even if it was only just hot enough to avoid being detected for now, the shinigami might find themselves less cold, they would have a better range of mobility with the freezing cold no longer lingering in their bones. Other then that however the quincy wouldn’t do much, she’d instead almost seemed to fade away into the snow, what faint signature she had dispersing into several directions at once, so if someone tried to find her it would be as if she had faded away to become the snow itself. Although any manner of beast that was along the way now? Well atleast the raven might find that there was absolutely no one following him within miles, hollows? Nope, they would have been gone, any other manner of beast as well had seemed to mysteriously vanish and another facet that would appear after the quincy decided to quietly keep an eye on things in the shadows?

That would be the blizzard, one that whipped itself up with such force that the male would only have to follow the immense energy signature that drowned out anything and everything else, the quincies own signature being hidden by it and by how she dispersed it everywhere. Hence after that Niflheim had continued to follow while remaining hidden, her eyes having darkened, more mercury than platinum, more stormy than serene, they had become eyes that spoke of possibly if need be dealing with a threat, but also of a being that wasn’t to that point yet. She wished to see why he was here, rather than ask him and possibly get something less than what would be the truth. Since honestly? She wouldn’t put up with half-truths or white-lies, she would find out what was going on then make her decision, hence why for now? It would be as if she never existed, perfectly hidden in the storm she had created, her spiritual energy masked, and her senses focused on everything around her.

THE BROKEN RAVEN

HENREX ASTILLON

The cold wind traveled through his shihakusho as the boy continued to trudge through the cold snow that currently threatened to freeze him to death. Chilling his bones until they refused to move. But Henrex was determined to find out what this item was that was calling him out to this land of ice. and snow. Crunch. Crunch. The sounds of his feet entering the snow and causing his boots to leave footprints within the snow. The boy's arms continued to rub one another for warmth. Snow littered his clothing and hair. With so much snow within his hair, he could be mistaken for being an albino.

His eyes squinted to see through the fog and mist that the icy air of Antarctica gave him. His eye stung from the icy cold air slicing into him, causing the boy to blink away several tears from his eye as he forced his body onward. However, after everything, it wasn't enough. Henrex's cold skin did nothing to the actual cold of the universe. He fell to his knees, shaking and shivering. How stupid he had been to come out here. Bowing his head, the boy allowed more snow to cover his black-clad figure. He had survived battles with demons, Vizards, even other Shinigami, and so much more. He had survived a fire that had scarred him permanently. But, in the end, it had proven to be Mother Nature to be his second killer.

His thoughts were...surprisingly peaceful.

So...this is where I die. Again. Covered by snow. Frozen to death. Never to be found. Never to be missed. Maybe it would be best that way.

His eye slowly began to close, as he was ready to admit defeat....when another thought rose in his mind. It was the lesson that his meditation teacher had given him upon his first few days of his training. It still stuck with him to this day, over six hundred years later. Seven times down, eight time up. The phrase had meant no sense to him at first. But even now, it still rang out. Don't give up. Even if you are thrown to the ground, beaten to the point of death, you keep getting back up. Even if it kills you. This is what caused Henrex to rise again. Slowly getting to his feet, he resumed putting one foot in front of the other.

Seven times down....eight times up.....

Step after step, Henrex forcefully continued his journey. He wasn't going to die here. His gloved hand went to his face, wiping his eye and his face from the snow that had covered him. His eye blazed with newfound determination as he forced his body to it's limits to keep him going. Every ounce of energy was being used to fight the cold. He was getting closer to whatever was calling him here. He would find out what this strange thing was. A gasp left him, forming as more mist. Squeezing his eye shut, Henrex soon dropped to one knee. Even now, he was struggling.

I can't give up now....Seven times down, eight...times...up...

He collapsed.

Falling down, Henrex's eye gently stared at the white that was around him. He no longer felt cold. The snow had numbed his sense of touch to the point where he now no longer felt the cold. His eye began to close. Even with it all....it all proved useless. The world began to fade into black. It was over. His life ended...truly...here. As his world began to fade...he could have swore....he felt someone...watching him.

Heat flared into his body like a sudden shock from a defibrillator. His eyes snapped open, and, drawing in large gulps of air, he quickly allowed the air to travel through his body and into his lungs. Rising to his hands and knees, his body burst into a fit of coughs and gags, before his swirling, aching head slowly began to focus on what was happening. He had lost consciousness for such a short moment that he could have been considered dead. His head slowly turned from left to right, looking for who might have been his savior. Nothing. What had happened to him that caused his body to heat up?

As he pondered this, his eye soon widened. His senses soon picked up the energy that had spread like wildfire throughout the land. It was as if the energy had became the snow. Rising from the snow, the cold within his bones melting. Resuming his walking, Henrex knew that now he had the energy to continue. As his pace quickened, Henrex soon found himself moving quicker than he had before. He knew that he had to move fast.

Before the cold would kill him....for real this time.

ENTER THE DEPTHS

Artist: Mogeko Castle - Song: N/A - Word Count: N/A

”..Good hes up..”

Niflheim had murmurred as she watched the male who had come for something. The way he eventually got up spoke about his character. Even though she didn’t wish to engage further with him she found herself walking from the storm her spiritual signature becoming more apparent as she exhaled and increased the level of heat that was surrounding him. She did this for two main reasons, one of course being that he currently was freezing to death in the midst of a torrent of snow. The second reason was she didn’t wish to see the random stranger get hypothermia. Shinigami or not there wasn’t a reason for them to be freezing out in the midst of the snow. Hence with these things taken care of the likes of the quincy had shifted her focus and dissapeared back into the snow, her expression remaining neutral as she seemed to be dead set on watching this male until he got to the destination that he sought, be it somewhere that was far away, or somewhere close that didn’t exactly matter.

”..What is he looking for though out here?”

The quincy’s sternritter grandmaster thought simply because of the fact that, there was very litte out here that would be considered to be “Important” enough to risk life and limb for. This was the reason that she’d continue to watch him, her reishi sensory skills already beginning to pick up strange energy signatures up ahead, although what that exactly was could be anyones guess, because o the fact that there was a lot that was hidden beneath the ice of antarctica, many things lurked and waited, all she could do was hope that this was not one of those things and move on from it. Instead she continued to hide in the snow, her silver eyes gleaming in the white conditions. As she thought about how this man was driven to find his goal, driven to obtain what he sought. Risking life and limb on a quest for strength. Honestly it struck a chord within the likes of the sternritter grandmaster. It made her think about her own life, about her own goals and aspirations.

She was intrigued, she wanted to know more. She wanted to see the conclusion and be a witness to this young mans testimony of strength which was why she released and imbedded a single concept into energy to give to the man. This concept was known as “Courage” What it would do would envelope the likes of the raven in a veil of warmth and certainty. Something that would convey to him that everything would be okay, that everything would work out in the end. That was what she conveyed through her ability, and hopefully the male would begin to see the positive effects of this, be it a drive to acomplish more, be it a need to conquer their fears it was irrelevant how it affected him but she hoped that it would be of some use to the male who had come so far in search of something.

After giving him that though the quincy had done everything she could for him. It wasn’t her quest to do for him, it was his own adventure his own skills would push him through or see him fail. That was the truth of the world after all, even if people banded together to fight for the greater good, even if empires rose from the ashes of war. It wasn’t the collective that was truly powerful it was the individuals within that influencedthings the most. It was why power was the one thing people could rely on most, and that was the quincy wished for him to rely on it , his own power, to see it blossom to see it grow. In short?

She wished him to succeed.

He was almost to whatever this thing was. He still wasn't sure what this demonic calling was. Whatever it was, it was potent. Heat continued to flare into his body like a wildfire, and it only gave him more energy to press on and ignore the cold. His arms continued rubbing one another for warmth, his eye squinting to see through the misty snow. He continued treading through the ice and snow, before his foot slid out from under him, and he fell hard onto his back, feeling his entire body hit ice.

The male slowly rose into a sitting position, before one of his hands slowly began to travel to the back of his head, feeling a large pulsing coming from that region as he lifted his head from the ice. He felt a spiritual pressure from someone becoming more clear as he allowed more and more heat to travel through his veins and provide protection from the cold to his body. His teeth still chattered from the cold that was constantly trying to shut out the heat, but he slowly, but surely rose to his feet and continued onward. It was only a short distance away now. His eyes scanned from left to right as he looked for anyone who could be nearby.

The fact that there was another spiritual signature in the area wasn't comforting either. Currently, it could be one of two things. It could be the person who prevented him from freezing to death such a short time ago, or it could be someone either after what he was after, or someone who was just there to kill him. He preferred option one. It would be some good karma to thank the one who saved his life. So, he kept one of his slowly freezing hands on his sword at all times, just in case the second option was what was happening. Shakily drawing the sword from it's sheath, the cold blade met the equally cold air.

However, his arms soon faltered, and his arms lowered, his weapon clanging against the ice beneath the snow. His movements were just about to continued, before it hit him. This is where it was. So, he collapsed to his knees, scraping furiously at the snow beneath him, pulling it away in short time, before he stared at the ice beneath him. A black object was buried deep below the rocky, but cold surface of the ice. His hands soon went to work with his sword, lifting the sharp weapon above his head and slamming it down repeatedly against the ice.

However, all that it made were mere dents. To do this, it seemed he would need the sharp blade of his Shikai. So, standing up and holding his sword with both hands, Henrex's lips quietly whispered: "Pierce the heart, and sever the soul, Chiya." The katana's entire form would be coated in a black and purple essence, before the entire weapon would stretch and extend it's length, then the right end of the weapon would curve and bend, forming a large scythe. With his Shikai active, Henrex would quickly bring the weapon down, making a single large crack in the chunk of ice that was in front of him.

Lifting the heavy weapon again, he brought down the scythe again, leaving more cracks forming in the ice. Again and again the scythe slammed into the ice, forming more and more cracks in the ice. And then, the final blow. The last attack from the scythe managed to break the thick ice that was concealing this runic object. Tightening his glove, Henrex reached down into the depths of the chilling water, feeling his hand be drench as he reached for the object. His fingers slowly wrapped around it, and he yanked his arm from the water, bringing the pitch black object with it.

Shivering as the water's coldness shot past the heat that was travelling through his body and mainly, into his hand. The hand that was receiving such was currently shaking to the point where Henrex really couldn't stop it. His eye stared at the strange power that was coming from this rune. Slowly rising to his feet, he quietly whispering something, and two black wings would burst from his back, the protrusions from his back immediately feeling the chill from the wind and soon, the heat traveled to the wings, and Henrex let out a quiet breath of relief. Slowly lifting off the ground, Nemesis Rune in hand, he would turn the way he came, before flying away.

Mission complete.
