Her lips formed a tight line. Her eyelids were clamped close, afraid that holding them open for any amount of time would burn the moisture away from her tear ducts. The bangs she normally swept away from the front of her face because they tickled her so much, she was more than happy to let fall where they may, just for that little extra bit of shade. The sweat that dropped from her brow was a testament to the heat on this day, more than she could handle. Occasionally, she would make a soft noise of grievance from behind the other two in her in her group, which would not come with any acknowledgment. They, too, were suffering in their own ways under the summer sun, for they were all too similar. This was one of the injustices suffered by women of long hair, and the Miyake family women always had their hair flow down to their waists. Such a great head of hair meant the heat and humidity was going to perform terrors on their locks... they all dreaded this swelter. Naomi had less reason than either of them to complain though, because her hair was blue, and their's was black. At least she wouldn't be taking the full brunt of the sunlight, but still... this heat wave had arrived out of nowhere when they were supposed to be exploring the reaches of the Karakura metropolis. This was their second day in the city, having only arrived to their house last night and had no time to do anything but sleep (Much to Naomi's satisfaction). Today was to be the tour, and while they'd managed to see a good deal of the place, there was still so so so much to see. Right now, Naomi just wanted to doze off, but Kimiyo?the youngest of the three?told her that if she did, they'd leave her behind. She pouted at that.
The scenery began to change. They were transitioning over from the heavy urban areas with walls made of windows and pillars of metal, stacking forever on top of each other higher than Naomi dared to look. Now the area was opening up, feeling more natural and energetic. Here the pedestrians outnumbered the vehicles, walking this way and that. More than enough people directed their stares toward the Miyake women, but such things were so commonplace that it was practically invisible to them. Kimiyo was looking far ahead, holding her hand over eyes to try and block the sun's glare from them. Something must have caught her gaze, because she stopped and extended her arm to point at a thing in the distance.
''Ohhh. Looks like there's a market not too far ahead. I bet you there's a vendor or two making a killing off of the heat today. Ice cream... cold drinks... shaved ice... Let's go!'' All these things sounded spectacular to Naomi, causing her to open her mouth a bit and unintentionally release a droplet of drool from her mouth. Despite that, she complained, not even opening her eyes to actually see how far the market was.
''Too faaaaaaaaaar...'' was all she said before she collided with Kimiyo's back, hopping onto it and anchoring herself to her younger sister with her arms over her shoulders. Even though Naomi was taller and heavier than Kimiyo, the latter was easily able to carry the former with the strength she possessed.
''Yosh. It's good for the followers to rely on the leader~'' Kimiyo declared rather proudly, emitting a close-mouthed laugh that Naomi could feel through her chest while she was latched onto her. Kimiyo, the youngest, also happened to be the leader of their group, coming from a more prestigious line of the family. She would reach up to grab the elder's arms and hold on to them tightly, making sure she didn't fall off. With that, Kimiyo was the one who did the walking for the both of them, so that Naomi could immediately begin to snooze. The speed with which she departed the real world earned a scoff from the third party member of the group, Kokoro, or Koko for short. She'd been mostly quiet during their trek, the reason being that she was discreetly enjoying her drink of Sake while they walked. It was quite unfair that she had a method to beat the heat, but that was the perk for someone who never went anywhere without her personal gourd of liquor on her person. Of course the other two Miyake sisters had asked, but Koko refused to share it; Not surprising, as her Sake was exceedingly precious to her and she'd never shared it before this point either. That left the only alternative available to them: Kimiyo uses her powers to manipulate the weather and transform the hot summer day into a cool overcast one! Or well. that's what they would have done if Kimiyo hadn't been chastised by her parents for doing the same thing before. Something or other about unintended consequences and imbalance to the environment. They also lectured about altering the fabric of nature for insignificant reasons such as "It's too hot."
''Hey, it's not fair if you only carry one of us. As a leader, you should treat none or all.'' The words were wise, but their eloquence was lost in the delivery as Koko was unmistakably drunken. She liked to think she was able to hold her head up right while she was intoxicated, but both of her sisters could easily tell the truth. She always had a deep red blush across her face, and her attitude changed from her well-kept and articulated manner to that of a happy-go-lucky teenager. Also, the top few buttons of her button-down shirt always somehow managed to come undone while she was drunk, though thankfully that was not yet the case. Kimiyo would feel the increase in weight as Koko suddenly jumped on her back as well, sandwiching Naomi in the middle, who didn't even stir her even breathing. Kimiyo didn't seem to falter either even with the added weight, continuing on at the same pace as before.
''Heh, all right! Rely on your leader, girls~ I'll get us to that market.'' Energized now by the chance to show off, she began to jog toward the collection of stands and stalls, dodging groups of people with ease. Doubtless the sight of the Miyake sister tower would draw some attention, attention that Kimiyo enjoyed. She always kept in the back of her mind what her goals were, and one of them was to display to the world what the Miyake family was capable of. They three were known as the miracle children?the Big Three?and she wanted to spread that reputation.
In no time at all, they were in the midst of the market throng, and Kimiyo was keeping an eye out for any stall selling something to beat the heat. One in particular caught her eye, causing her to suddenly stop and let go of the women leeching off of her back. There was a duo of thuds, an muffled 'oof', and Naomi's signature child-like whine that Kimiyo was more than desensitized to. The line was long but... for good reason supposedly; a stall was selling shaved ice with inflated prices, just as Kimiyo predicted some people might be today. She looked left and right, and saw nobody really taking advantage of the fact that it was so hot. The positioning of the stand was excellent, with no competition in sight from this spot, meaning that most customers would be lining up for his services. Not only that, but the way he elegantly carved the ice blocks for all to see?like it was a live performance?it caught the eyes of the passerby with ease. Kimiyo had to admire his tact, though not as much as she'd really appreciate having a snow cone at this very moment. She immediately began to dash the way of the line but just as quickly stopped, skidding on her heels and nearly falling over. She'd realized something.
She turned around slightly and looked sideways towards Koko, an embarrassed red flush across her cheeks. In the softest, most lovable voice she could muster, she begged to the drunken Miyake:
''Lend some money, nyan~ ...For snow cones, nyan~?'' The poor little kitten act was Kimiyo's trump card whenever she wanted something she couldn't achieve on her own. Still, however, Koko was not quite drunk enough to fall for it just yet. The play earned Kimiyo only an unimpressed expression; a face that asked 'Really?' For someone who wanted her sisters to rely on her, and was bred to be a spectacular leader... she certainly wasn't very responsible when it came to her money. She'd always been like that, though, like it was one of her few weak points. No matter how much money she made, she always managed to spend it before anyone knew it, and that meant she usually came to her sisters to borrow money from them. Koko, clearly aware of the core issue here, shook her head no in a way that couldn't be mistaken. Kimiyo was disheartened but did not give up! Turning to the blue-haired woman now, she worked her charm once more.
''Money for snow cones, nyan~ ...Help little sister out... nyan~?'' Naomi was easily the more vulnerable of the two, as she immediately begun taking out some Yen from her jean pockets to the satisfaction of the devious Kimiyo. With beaming eyes and a matching smile, she handed more than enough money to get snow cones for all of them.
As she dashed off once more, Koko commented to Naomi in a disapproving tone.
''You shouldn't encourage her, Naomi... -hic-... She's never going to learn any restraint with her money if people -hic- keep letting her borrow money.'' She took another sip of her sake directly from the gourd, and was sitting cross-legged on the ground in the middle of the walkway. People were circumnavigating their presence and giving weird looks still. Naomi merely kept smiling, looking toward where Kimiyo had gone even though her eyelids were still shut completely.
''It's okay...'' she half-spoke, half yawned.
''Our leader always pays everybody back eventually.'' And by the lack of a rebuttal from Koko, this statement was known to be fact between them. It was a long time before Kimiyo returned, having to go through that whole line by herself. Naomi and Koko had moved out of the way of the moving mobs of people, just relaxing by the roadside where they could lie down comfortably on the grass. Kimiyo was expertly managing three snow cones at once—the red one was her own, the blue was for Naomi, leaving the purple for Koko. Each had flavoring the same color as their eyes, which Kimiyo thought was pretty cute.
''Your glorious hero returns!'' she announced proudly, beckoning the other two to sit up. Naomi cheered weakly as she received her treat, and Koko gave thanks and unintentionally released a hiccup as a result.
''So shall we get going?'' Kimiyo would ask, before partaking in her cherry-flavored shaved ice. Koko would give a muffled concurrence as she picked herself off the ground, but it was Naomi who differed amongst them. She was about to explain, but her sisters already knew the reason.
It's all right, we get it. We'll see you at the dorms later, okay? They walked down the path while waving back towards the sleepy lady, before disappearing into the crowds of market-goers. Naomi was happily enjoying her snow cone's blue raspberry syrup, slurping the flavor straight out of the ice while hardly disturbing the spherical shape on top. Once all the flavoring was gone, then she would chomp into the ice. Relaxing was nice, and there were none quite like Naomi who enjoyed it more than her. She wasn't lazy, per se, but she was the least active of the Miyake trio. She was asleep more often than she was awake, and had no set schedule for it; it just happened to occur whenever it was convenient, and this seemed like a very convenient spot to doze off. She had such an affinity for sleep that she was attracted to the very concept of it, and sometimes she just got feelings about it. After she finished her snow cone, the tall blue-haired woman picked herself up and began to walk. Her legs carried her along a seemingly aimless course, and she was by no means opening her eyes to see which way she was going. She trusted in her feelings, and allowed them to lead the way. The result was a marketside bench in earshot of the bustling crowds, but just far away enough for it to not be too annoying.
She sat down, and could tell from the reverberations of the bench's wooden structure that another person—young adult male—was here as well. Normally, she would have ignored the person like anyone else, but he seemed different from all these other Karakura people. She opened her eye just barely more than a squint, and glanced in his direction to confirm her suspicious. Sure enough, she saw a man exhausted and allowing himself to kick back and relax. Then, she closed her eyes again and also eased up, a small smile now lighting up her face. She was only
just conscious of him, but not for long. Soon enough, though the expression on her face hadn't changed on bit, she was asleep. Her breathing became even and more audible, seen as well as heard with her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Her muscles became lax, and she seemed to be so soft and vulnerable. There were still sweat droplets on her pale skin that caught the sun's light like prisms, containing microscopic rainbows inside of them. The outside word had no idea of the dreams that occurred in Naomi's mind as her body slept so soundly, so serenely on this simple park bench. For, it was easy to find peace beside a person of like tiredness. This strange attraction with those of sleepy minds, something that Naomi only seemed to be able to feel, often got her into equally strange predicaments.
Such would be the case as the weight of Naomi's body fell into the side of the man's beside her. Without being disturbed from her sleep, she slumped against him so that her head was lying against his shoulder, and her bosom was pressing against his arm. The breaths she released would tickle the bare skin near his neck with the freshness of the blue raspberry shaved ice she had consumed earlier, in contrast to the blistering heat. Even after she'd fallen, she did not appear to be aware of the fact, still totally asleep. Thankfully, her hands were still secured in her own lap and not wandering anywhere they shouldn't. It was awkward enough as is...
