Re: Spaghetti Eastern [Kei/Bambietta]

KEI SAIONJI
The smile returned to Kei's face. There was another reason for her to stay. It wasn't that she enjoyed paperwork. She kind-of hated the tediousness of it. What she liked was being good at it. She enjoyed having something she could be truly proud of. "Then it's fantastic that I came here then. Between managing my family's household affairs and my duties as a Third Seat, I'm excellent at paperwork."
And while Kei had been rather accepting of the loose terms presented so far, the fact was she did have some things Bambietta needed. It was time to negotiate. "Although, if I am to be handling paperwork, I'd need more than just a lab. I'm not going to demand an office with a corner view or anything, just something big enough that could easily house a western-style futon for the nights I wouldn't return home. I don't share a bedroom well with strangers." Again, the same tone escaped.
Though, it wasn't like there was a home for Kei to return to anyway. She'd been (probably illegally) sleeping in her old office. It was the only place she had to herself unless she paid extortionate prices for a room at an inn. She'd have to find lodging eventually, especially with Byakuya Kuchiki taking over the 1st Division's barracks. This meant finding some form of income or a place to sleep. Perhaps working under her would be both.
Wait.
Kei pivoted the conversation. "It's quite clear that you're the one that's taken command over here, and, well, if I'm going to be supporting you, I think I do deserve to know your name at least. Otherwise I'd just come up with a nickname for you, and I doubt you'd want that."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
"Sure. Most of the people around here are used to spending a night or two in the office to keep an eye on things. I'll get you set up somewhere you can actually have a little privacy."
Bambietta wasn't going to ask any more questions than she actually had to, due to a combination of it not being her business and, really, her not caring all that much about the motives behind it. It was pretty normal around these parts, she did it herself all the time. The followup, however, gave her a moment of pause, and she looked to her prospective new employee with a faint spark of pride, which seemed to poke through even the weighty exhaustion that was smothering her at the moment.
"I'm Bambietta Basterbine."
She knew that someone of Kei's position would have, at least, heard the name in passing. It was memorable, after all, even moreso in a place like the Soul Society. But she was, of course, the woman who'd been brought to the Seireitei as part of a penal sentence, the woman who had only been allowed to become a proper Substitute after no small amount of paperwork and taking every test in the Shino Academy in an exceptionally short period of time. Bambietta was used to people having some opinion on her before they'd ever met, but things were different now.
Not because people would fail to have opinions. She just didn't need to stake her life on them anymore.

KEI SAIONJI
There was a flash of recognition with that name. Kei had heard of Bambietta Basterbine. But perhaps it wasn't quite what others might have of her. "The 'Shackled Genius' herself, huh." She shook her head. "The rumors I heard was that you were wheelchair-bound... I hope you know that I got a lot of requisition requests to making areas more accessible because of you, and now I see you're up and walking... I should be annoyed."
But she wasn't. Kei knew that the requests were not only reasonable, they were likely needed. Especially nowadays, there were likely people that wouldn't be able to walk around normally. Bambietta had just spearheaded the development. Aside from that, Kei only knew of this woman's history in passing. Rumors were something she enjoyed, but they were only juicy when there was truth. She hadn't had the inclination to look into the rumors beforehand to check their veracity. Now? Oh, she had to.
Kei let out a one-breath chuckle and sighed audibly. "Well, Bambietta—I hope you don't mind if I call you by your first name—I do thank you for the offer. It's quite gracious and probably more than I could ask for..." As she started speaking, it'd sound like she was turning her down. But that was just one of Kei's techniques. "I think this will be a change I need. I'll help you run this place to the best of my ability. And in the process, I do hope we get to know each other better."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
"I was for a while. It'd probably be better for me if I was still in the wheelchair, really."
It wasn't as if Bambietta was doing spectacularly when it came to her physical ability, after all. She was still a far cry from the soldier she'd been trained to be. But, at the same time, that was fine with her. It wasn't as if she'd ever really wanted that life anyway. It had just been a way to avoid getting killed.
"I don't really care. Director Basterbine is probably what people should call me, but Bambietta's fine if you want. I'm looking forward to working with you, either way. There's going to be a lot of change moving forward. A lot of potential here once things are back to normal."
Her gaze briefly turned once more to Kei, before she offered a brief question, casually in spite of the relevance of it.
"I'm thinking 'Spiritual Affairs Research Institute.' Thoughts?"
