Spaghetti Eastern [Kei/Bambietta]
Tue Nov 05, 2024 11:23 pm
KEI SAIONJI
"Damn thing..." Kei rattled the locked door to what was formerly the SRDI headquarters. It was the one place she thought she might find someone who wasn't a stodgy noble with some old records. She already had secretly copied the remnants of the data before anyone else set up shop at the Daireishōkairo. She had hoped to find someone there that might know it, but, well, few people cared about the things she cared about. She could barely use Kaidō, and there wasn't anything but logistics left for her to do. Without a paycheck or someone to logistics at, she wasn't going to do that.
Kei shook it more, and she thought about blowing the door down... but that might send the wrong message. Even if no one was home, an explosion would likely send someone running there... and then she'd have to explain why she was breaking in... Blah blah blah. Too tedious. "Helloooooo," Kei's voice rang out as she banged on the door again. "I really hope someone's inside and I'm not out here yelling like an idioooot."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
The former 3rd Division had been plenty appreciated in these troubled times, but the former SRDI had been even moreso. Bambietta, despite everything, had ultimately been the one to be given the reins on both institutions; she was simply more willing to do it than the former acting captain. Not that Bambietta would really hold that against him. If she'd had a family, she couldn't imagine prioritizing this over them.
Well, in a sense, she kind of could. She had one friend, at least, and this work was to his benefit. To the benefit of everyone who'd believed in her enough to give her a living here. That was why she was here, still working, hardly even sleeping, and why she was ready to open the door to the former SRDI with a faintly annoyed expression at the woman who'd been banging on the door.
"You are, but I'm inside, yeah. Can I help you?"
Bambietta was tired. She didn't like a lot of the people who had already come by her door. If someone was here to make demands of her, she wasn't interested in playing ball.

Spicy. But Kei wouldn't hold any spice against anyone right now. It was a tough time, and so many were overworked and under—well, that was a topic for later, she supposed. She was going to try to be polite to this woman because she likely had something Kei wanted, or at least Kei hoped she did. "I'm actually hoping you, well, maybe not you specifically, though I certainly wouldn't mind if it were you—ah, I get ahead of myself." Kei might be polite, but she was still herself. She couldn't help but to ogle what the SRDI was offering. She bowed slightly. It was just enough to be seen as respectful, but her noble upbringing made it hard for her to bow low to anyone else. ...or maybe it was just her stubborn pride.
"Kei Saionji, former third seat of the First Division." Even stressed, tired, and perhaps even desperate, Kei couldn't help but to keep a hint of the chipper tone she was always known to have. Her introduction would not have been out of place a month ago. "I am hoping that the SRDI can assist in recovering some data that was destroyed during the attack. I don't know how important it all is because, well, it's mostly just slag from some Kidō—Sōkatsui if I had to wager."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
"I doubt it. At least, not the individual people who're still here. Anyone that's still here right now is working on trying to find the Captain Commander because they want to. We at least have money to spare, I guess, so they're being paid."
It could have been much worse here, Bambietta supposed, but she was hardly in a good mood. At the same time, though, she was almost glad that she was here to suffer through it. She had training for crises, she'd suffered far worse than this, and she had the personal drive to attach herself to fixing it. That was exactly why, however, she didn't really see any huge interest in what this Saionji woman was offering.
"I can maybe offer you a few researchers if they're willing to take time off finding the Captain Commander, but I doubt it. We've got equipment we're not using, though. I might be able to at least get one of the lab assistants to work with you, some of them might be willing to take some time off staring at dangai charts."
Bambietta rubbed her eyes briefly with her thumb and forefinger, not exactly irritated, but clearly not willing to play ball too much.
"What data are we even talking about here? I'm getting ahead of myself."

"Ugh, Dangai charts... My eyes cross just thinking about them." Kei shivered at being reminded of her time spent looking at those accursed things. She may not have been part of the SRDI, but she had to know how to read them in preparation for operating the Senkaimon when she was on that duty. Bambietta's comment snapped Kei out of getting too lost in that thought. "Riiight, the data. It's, well, hard to tell... All I know for a fact is that the data is old and someone purposely tried to destroy it. I don't know if it was you—ah." Kei caught herself from saying "your old boss." It likely wouldn't do her any favors to continue that sentence. Breathing through clenched teeth, she continued. "It's something to do with Kidō outside of the typical Bakudō/Hadō lines, but otherwise I can't tell. It's all fragmented. The Daireishōkairō was hit pretty hard."
"It's possible that it may help in locating the Captain-Commander, but, again, I'm not sure. I'd say I'd be fine with just some lab space, but the actual technical side of things... I can be a bit of a klutz and I don't want to risk losing the data entirely. So at least one assistant would be lovely."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
Bambietta wasn't stupid enough to not understand what it was Kei had been about to say, but she didn't really care that much, either. Not because she was detached from what it was that Urahara had done or anything like that; she'd just gotten very used to having problems thrown into her face that she could trace back to him. It made her feel uneasy in her own skin, like maybe she should have just kept what Vastime put in.
Maybe she'd have to figure something of her own out, but that was for later.
"I can give you a lab space and an assistant, then. Maybe two, if you think you're clumsy enough to mishandle something major."
Some might have called Bambietta callous in the way she was talking to someone potentially helpful. They would have been right, frankly. She was tired, however, and she wasn't in the business of trying to maintain appearances. Doing her best to seem quiet, unassuming, by and large amenable, that just wasn't what was important right now. She had work to do, and there wasn't anyone left who could come in and throw her back into jail because they didn't like the way she carried herself.
So the only thing to do was to handle things the way she knew how. Gesturing for Kei to follow, without really waiting for any confirmation that the woman would want to, she simply continued to speak.
"Most of our assistants are former 3rd Division, so they know what they're doing. They know their way around the lab, they know where things are if you need help. Don't be afraid to ask them to handle any heavy lifting. If you need more specialized equipment or another assistant, ask. I'll see what I can do. Sound good?"

Two? How generous. Kei nodded in thanks and followed, keeping her head on a swivel. Truth be told, she had never been inside a proper research facility, and the only labs she saw were the labradors one of her noble friends kept. Well, that and the one mock lab in the academy that she got intimately aware with the tolerances of... But again, a story for another time. There were a surprising number of people still around. Most people were out doing their own thing and forming alliances based on personal beliefs, but perhaps this was a more insular group than she realized.
"It's more than good. Frankly, I expected it to be a little more chaotic and empty. I do have a question, however." Kei stopped looking around and focused on Bambietta instead. She'd be able to better focus on the layout of this place later. "I don't expect my usage of your space to be without charge, and I'd be doing us both a disservice to not want to pay for it. I may not be a scientist, but I'm sure there are other ways I could help." It was an involuntary switch back to a flirtatious tone. I mean, the woman in front of her was hot as hell, but even Kei's expertise in those matters wouldn't be enough. She took a moment to straighten her tone out. "Is there anything in particular that you or the SRDI need assistance with? I may not have much experience on the development side of things, but my days in the Kidōshū were spent mostly researching."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
That kind of tone wasn't lost on Bambietta, and admittedly, it did cause a feeling she could only describe as vaguely akin to static electricity in the base of her skull when she actually processed it. It was the kind of thing she'd avoided like the plague for the past few years, and she could certainly tell very well that the prospect of accepting that kind of offer might help her unwind. Unwinding, though, wasn't what she wanted.
"I'll think about it."
That was all she was going to say on that front, anyway, at least with regard to that first implication. The latter part, however, gave her something more concrete, and thankfully, it was something she was actually more willing to engage with on a less primal level.
"Considering the Gotei's no more, even being the SRDI is going to die pretty soon. We're going to have to focus on more than just serving as some subsidiary from here on, so if you have that kind of kido experience, then great. I was a researcher in 2nd Division until recently, so I'd be glad to have someone else in that field on board. Going independent means expanding, and the better expertise we have, the more people are going to understand they can't just go somewhere else. Not that they could, anyway."
There was confidence in spades in the way Bambietta spoke about the future of the institute she'd taken over. The captain had betrayed everyone, the vice captain had left for personal reasons. But she was still here, and she had no intention of letting that change.
"I'd want to see some credible work, of course. I'm not just bringing in anyone who says they're an expert. But I'm sure your work with this data will be a good opportunity to show me what you know about kido and the like. I don't really need favors or anything like that. What I need is competent people who are willing to commit to this place."
It wasn't just an offer now. If Kei wanted to help, she was free to. But Bambietta was going to use it as an opportunity to see what she was capable of.

Kei wasn't surprised the SRDI might die from this. It had happened to the Kidōshū. It had happened to the Onmitsukidō. It was bound to happen to the SRDI. What was unique about this situation was the lack of a singular, over-arching authority that would absorb the remnants. This was the perfect time for a group like this to go independent. It was, frankly, the perfect time for her to go independent as well...
Kei never had the sense of duty her brother did. She didn't feel a connection—a responsibility to the greater scheme of things. The Kidōshū had been a support network for the Gotei; they were not there to balance the cycle like the actual Gotei members were. This led to a detachment from others and their sense of duty. And so, she had once left the Gotei because she felt out of place. When she rejoined, she had treated it more like a social club and a paycheck rather than any sense of pride. Perhaps not being tied to something bigger again would help the disconnect.
"I can assure you I am more than just competent." Kei's pride welled up. Even if she had felt a disconnect, she had always felt somewhat superior to most. From being a blue-blooded noble to just being good at her job, it was hard for her not to. "When I was with the Kidōshū back in the day, I rose to Deputy Vice-Commander; effectively a third seat. In the Kidō specialists, I was third in line. Of course there's still a gulf between Vice-Commander and Deputy Vice-Commander, but I'd say it's still rather impressive." Of course, every bit of shining pride had its shadow. She let out a frustrated sigh. "But being the best at coloring inside the lines doesn't matter as much when everyone and their mother seems to be coloring outside of the lines nowadays..."
Changing the subject away from her own frustrations at modern Kidō, Kei tried to assert her commitment. "I can see about providing some funding from my own savings. I may not have much I can spare, but I think it's the least I can do in addition to being here myself. If nothing else, having someone who is also an expert in your field should prove helpful—whether it's to bounce ideas off of or to express frustrations over drinks that no one else understands, it's good to have someone that you don't have to dumb your words down for. Plus, I can keep the stupid questions from hitting your desk just like I did for the Captain-Commander and her Lieutenant."

BAMBIETTA BASTERBINE
"Good to hear. Those are credentials I can put some faith in. Let's hope the results match up."
Bambietta was not the kind of woman who assumed the best in most circumstances. It just wasn't in her nature, given her upbringing. She understood that many here in the Seireitei were born into wealth, whether because of noble standing or simply generational merchantry. She, on the other hand, had been a street urchin. She always knew to plan for the worst.
"For now, I won't ask you to go contributing out of your own pocket or anything like that. The SRDI was the source of a lot of the Gotei United's funding, and I'm sure the people fighting over who gets to succeed it are both going to be looking for our resources. They won't be getting them for free."
It was, in her view, a very easy way for them to continue operating. The SRDI headquarters were home to unfathomable amounts of the Gotei's computerized technology; huge swathes of its vital observation and surveillance systems came back to the displays here. Bambietta wasn't going to be giving any of that data away for free, because she couldn't afford to. The people who were analyzing it hardly deserved to keep being treated like soldiers.
"I can always use someone who knows paperwork. It's never been my forte."
She didn't need to elaborate beyond that. Reading and writing had not been vital skills in the gutter.
