Hayden could feel the sensation of drowning. There was time, thankfully, but he didn't have much to work with. His hands, for a couple seconds, desperately slammed at several points along the wall. But the bubble that had him contained was solid.

He felt pressure grow in his nose as his body screamed to inhale…

The shinigami tried to think. as much as he was trying, he didn't have the strength to brute force his way out. Even if he could have broken it from the outside, the water around him ensured that he was effectively weaker than normal.

His diaphragm tightened…

He needed a single point to focus his energy. His zanpakuto would have done the trick, but it was several meters away, having fallen to the ground after it collided with Wellgunde. Even if it was closer, it was still on the other side of the bubble.

His lungs began to feel like they were going to collapse…

He didn't know what he could do. His thoughts became jumbled not just from the lack of air slowly creeping up on him, but from panic. He knew that their opponent was likely focusing on Hono, who now couldn't afford the space to help him. He was in this situation by himself. And needed to get out. He needed to… He needed to…

He needed…

Come back…

He clenched his fist and slammed it into the bubble one last time, demanding his shield return to him. It wobbled on the ground, before it took off, returning to its owner. The acceleration took a moment to bring the shield to speed, but in no time, its edge met the wall with the same force he had used to attack his opponent. He could only hope it was enough to at least make something he could work with in his last moments of consciousness.

WELLGUNDE

If she cared at all for the abilities of others, Wellgunde might have been impressed by the defense on display by this opponent. However, she only found it irritating, that even a single of her strikes might have missed. What irritated her all the more, however, was the awareness that the pool she would have condensed into a pearl had been burst, by an attack for which she had not been prepared.

That, however, was only then redoubled by the growing sensation of pain in her midsection. What was at first only minor ache quickly grew into a searing pain, and all at once she felt herself bleeding as wide gashes cut themselves into her hierro, and into her flesh. No, this wouldn't do. If it were only one or the other of these whelps, Wellgunde could certainly have turned them to paste. But she had been careless; she had failed her dear master in her overconfidence. Tensing her whole body, Wellgunde stepped once more, but this time away from her opponents as the hierro around her legs exploded. It might have been enough to leave some final parting wounds on Hono, but that meant little to Wellgunde as she staggered to a standing position.

"Be grateful...that I must maintain this beautiful visage that I have been gifted..."

Clawing open a descorrer, Wellgunde stepped through it with no small hurry. She had, at least, allowed no small amount of nibelungen their time to collect the corpses her master had wanted. She needed now to simply hope it had been sufficient, and that she had not failed more greatly than she already understood.

He fell to the ground, and lowered to be on one knee, using the shield as his third point of contact with the floor, as he forced himself to cough up remnants of water then gasp for air. He didn't let himself stay down for longer than he needed to catch his breath, still light-headed, but it was longer than he would have liked. So he was relieved when he saw the Arrancar retreat, watching as she disappeared into the depths from whence she came. He could still fight to some degree, but he wasn't confident in his ability to avoid another bubble, nor escape a second time, especially with his one method exposed.

The shield slid from his forearm to his back, and he rushed to Hono's side to check on her. He was largely okay. Bruised from his tumble, soaking wet, and still feeling like his lungs had been crushed from the drowning, but he was in a better position than she was.

“Come on, we should get you to Medical,” he said, offering his hand to her.
