Psychological Analysis
Toki is, above all else, a man who is fully aware that his reputation somewhat precedes him. That fact has certainly lessened to some degree over time, and he’s thankful for that, but he is under no illusion that he can ever really escape the rumors that surround him and his parentage. However, Toki is not the sort of man who cares about things like that even the slightest bit. Whoever his father is, that doesn’t matter to Toki, and while some might become spiteful toward others for being shunned for something so asinine, Toki tends to take it in stride, bearing the ostensible disgrace with a cool, collected smile. After all, why should he care what people say about him, when he knows his own worth? And why should he care what people say about his father, when he doesn’t even know the man? But, should one insult his mother, that’s another story entirely. While he doesn’t suddenly shift into an angry man at hearing those words, Toki’s demeanor becomes more condescending, more challenging. He will naturally defend his mother’s honor, not by immediately challenging the others to a sword fight, but asking what exactly they’ve done for Soul Society by comparison that gives them any room to speak ill of someone who helped to save it. Of course, if they wish to get violent over it, then Toki will gladly oblige.Despite his cool exterior, and apparent carefree demeanor, Toki is almost always thinking about one thing or another. He often comes across as absentminded because of this, but the reality is simply that he’d rather focus on his own thoughts than a lot of the things that tend to be going on around him. That’s not to say that life isn’t worth ruminating on, of course; if anything, it’s the little joys in life that Toki thinks about the most. He doesn’t see any value in trying to imagine things bigger than oneself, because those are things you’ll never actually be able to grasp anyway. Sure, maybe you can get there one day, but overambition is just setting yourself up for failure.
Overambition, however, does not include all ambition. Toki isn’t willing to simply settle with his current state in life. He desires to improve, to grow, but this isn’t out of any need to be stronger, and he isn’t in any rush to do so. Improvement and growth is simply the nature of anyone who’s truly alive, who wishes to give their life meaning. And he, who has been given a life at rather great cost, has no desire to waste even a second of it.
RELATIONSHIPS
○ Hinamori Momo: Toki’s mother, and the woman he looks up to more than anyone else. He understands all too well the difficulty that his existence surely put her through, and the fact that she remained a better mother than any could ask for is all that he thinks needs to be said about her. Toki is unfathomably proud of his mother, and it could certainly be said that he’s a bit of a mama’s boy, but he doesn’t see that as a negative trait.
○ Aizen Sosuke: Toki’s father, even if no records officially document that fact. Naturally, the rumors regarding this matter persist even to this day, but Toki doesn’t tend to let his parentage bother him. Of course, that isn't to say he's forgiven the memory of his father or any such nonsense as that. Toki has seen the grief Aizen caused, and the aftermath of his betrayal, and what he's noticed most overwhelmingly is that it was all in service of a plan that ostensibly didn't even work. He's still uncertain if the man was more foolish than people believe, or if perhaps even his defeat was just a part of his greater plan.
○ Matsumoto Rangiku: One of the most prevalent people in his childhood short of his own mother, Rangiku's presence in his upbringing was sufficient enough that, even now, Toki refers to her as "Aunt Rangiku." He respects her a great deal, and despite some of her more questionable traits, he thinks she is an exceptional role model.
○ Sawachika Ken: The loudest presence in his early life, if not necessarily the most prevalent. The Sawachika family head was remarkably generous toward the Hinamori household throughout Toki's upbringing, and he has never forgotten this kindness.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The birth of the man named Hinamori Toki is an event surrounded by countless rumors, and he has been the subject of gossip through the Seireitei from the moment he was born. Born to Hinamori Momo, Vice-Captain of the former Gotei 13’s 5th Division, Toki’s father has never been formally identified on any official paperwork, and his identity remains unknown to any, except for, one would suppose, Momo herself. However, Toki’s birth came only 7 short months after the betrayal of Sosuke Aizen, and all in the Seireitei naturally came to their own conclusions about who the child’s absent father must have been. Whether this is true or false, none will say, and the Gotei has never said anything regarding the matter. When it comes to Toki’s upbringing, the lack of a father in his life meant relatively little; so far as he is concerned, he could never have asked for a better upbringing than the one his dear mother gave him.
Throughout his youth, Toki had admittedly few friends, simply on account of the fact that there were scant few people willing to let their children associate with a child that everyone had decided was surely the son of the Soul Society’s greatest traitor. But he did just fine, meeting those few children who were still allowed to play with him, and spending whatever time he could around those from the Gotei who knew his mother. They, thankfully, didn’t seem to be quite as harsh, but he knew from even a young age that there was something generally off about his circumstances. The way people spoke to him in an almost guarded way, how others didn’t care for him or his mother. Even as a child, he didn’t particularly like that. After all, Toki knew perfectly well that his mother was the nicest woman in Soul Society, someone that loved him very much and who always took care of him. If other people didn’t like her, that was their problem.
As he grew older, however, Toki gradually began to realize the reality of his life. When he was 13 years old, he asked his mother where exactly his father was, but he didn’t receive an answer. He’d asked before as a child, of course, but he hadn’t really gotten much of an answer, and he hadn’t exactly asked seriously. Now, more mature, he had been able to ask in a more serious manner, and his mother’s answer was more guarded, more sure; “Your father passed away.” Most young men might have pushed for a more concrete answer, but Toki was smarter than that. His mother always answered any question he asked cheerfully, glad to help him learn, but the way she spoke on that topic told him that it wasn’t something he ought to ever speak to her about again.
So, he didn’t. And he hasn’t to this very day.
While many his age might have chosen to join the Gotei when they came of age, Toki declined to do so, even as he found his spiritual presence growing at a rate rather tremendously beyond most his age. He could sense that, even if he had, his mother might not have liked him to do so, and he wasn’t so particularly inclined toward it, anyway. Instead, he took to working at a local flower shop in the Seireitei, and it was a career he rather enjoyed. But the reality of it was that doing anything in the public sphere would inevitably lead to his being exposed to those who didn’t think much of him, and eventually, he heard the whispers again, but now with the experience and wisdom that came with age.
Aizen Toki. He wasn’t nearly enough of a fool to be confused by that accusation. Truth be told, he’d already felt fairly confident in it even before all that. Did he have any genuine evidence for it? No, not really. But he didn’t feel he needed it, either. The answer was rather clear, as far as he was concerned, but he wasn’t going to ask for confirmation. Toki simply continued with his life, but rather than idling along at the flower shop, he’d begun to learn from his mother and her friends. Kido, hoho, the basics of combat and the shinigami arts. After several decades, when he felt he’d become suitably skilled, he applied to Shino Academy. It wasn’t out of duty, or out of any sense that he needed to make up for the crimes of his bloodline or some absurd nonsense like that. He simply wanted to do more with his life, to give back to the world and become a man that his mother could be proud of.
He graduated in only 2 years, a feat that was a bit divisive. Some considered it proof that he’d inherited more of his father’s temperament, but Toki didn’t really listen to the rumors surrounding him anyway. The truth was that he made it through the Academy primarily through hard work, through the years that he had already spent learning many of the shinigami arts. There was no talent in it, no intrinsic mastery inherited. But people could believe what they wished, for such things hardly mattered to Toki. Indeed, he made it through his time at the Academy rather uneventfully, all things considered. There was only a single incident that was at all worth speaking about, and if you ask Toki about it now, he’ll admit to it with the same cool, collected smile he always wears.
It was quite simple, really. One of his fellow students, a young noble who felt he had a good deal of clout and something to prove, felt compelled to repeat something he’d surely heard from his parents or elders. A comment on Toki’s mother, which certainly was not something to be repeated in polite company, or really any company for that matter. Toki was all too used to hearing comments regarding himself and his parentage, but hearing his mother’s modesty spoken of in such a way was something he wouldn’t abide. He challenged his classmate to a simple duel, a match of swordsmanship with wooden training swords overseen by the Shino faculty. By all accounts, it was a perfectly legitimate challenge, and saying no would quite obviously be admission of inferiority.
That said, accepting the challenge proved to have much the same effect for this opponent of Toki’s. It was a decisive victory, one that left Toki without so much as a scratch, but to call it "clean" would be to understate the overwhelming brutality Toki showed the young man, which left his opponent in the medical office for some time. But despite the ferocity with which Toki battered his fellow student, he kept a collected expression throughout the match, clinical and stern rather than showing any outward fury.
Other than that single bout (which nearly saw Toki expelled), there wasn’t much worth talking about in Toki’s days at the academy. He naturally gravitated toward his aunt Rangiku's classes due to familiarity, but he generally excelled in all fields. Having now graduated, Toki has no desire to chase glory or prestige. He’d simply like to be a productive member of the Gotei.
POWERS AND ABILITIES
○ Poor Eyesight: Unfortunately for Toki, his eyesight is rather subpar. He is far from legally blind, thankfully, but it is generally poor enough that his ability to fight is inhibited by it. Naturally, this is a problem easily solved through the use of eyeglasses, but Toki generally refuses to wear them simply on account of how much more radically it makes him resemble his father. He does carry a pair, in case of emergencies, but most of the time you will find him without them. Unless Toki is wearing his glasses, his Speed, Martial Skill, Hoho, and Hakuda are all treated as one skill level lower than his actual rank.
○ Abnormal Spiritual Pressure: Whether on account of his training or his parentage, Toki's spiritual reserves are significantly higher than an everyday member of the Gotei United. He is far from the level of his father, and is not nearly so dangerous that he could compete with any high-ranked seated officers, but his presence is certainly notable if he allows his full spiritual power to be shown.
ZANPAKUTO
○ Zanpakuto Name: Momijiume (紅葉梅, "Autumn-Colored Plum Blossom")
○ Zanpakuto Spirit Appearance: Toki’s zanpakuto spirit takes the form of a black, almost formless figure, which comes out from the large body of water that fills Toki’s inner world. Its only defining feature is its immense, wide-open eyes.
○ Zanpakuto Sealed Power: Momijiume has no sealed abilities.
SHIKAI
○ Release Phrase: My heart grows cold, though I can taste the smell of flames. My spirit is burning up, though the chill wind of Enma blows. Endure it, Momijiume.
- Japanese Release Phrase:
- 心が冷えられた, 炎の匂いを味わられのに。 魂が焼けられた, 閻魔の寒気は吹かれのに。 堪えるたまえ, 紅葉梅。
Kokoro ga hierareta, honoo no nioi wo ajiwarare no ni. Tamashii ga yakerareta, enma no kanki wa fukare no ni. Koraeru tamae, Momijiume.
○ Shikai Appearance: When released, Momijiume’s blade becomes a pale alabaster, clear enough that light can come through.
○ Shikai Abilities: A fairly straightforward shikai, Momijiume allows Toki to fire a flaming projectile in the shape of a five-petaled flower each time he swings his blade. This attack is only as dangerous as the actual swing of his zanpakuto, apart from the natural incendiary ability of such an attack.
