Kyukaku is best described by the words “childlike innocence”. She’s blatantly naive and trusting of people, having very little experience with the world or having little to no negative experiences with people. The shinigami is incredibly forgiving to people who wrong her in any sort of way, with the justification for a grudge having to be extremely egregious towards her or those that she loves. Oh, that’s another thing. The people that Kyukaku surrounds herself with are those that she cherishes the most, to the point that she would willingly lay down her life for those people. One thing that Kykuaku holds in high regard is loyalty, finding that it is the most important and defining feature of any person. Someone who is fickle with where their loyalties lie is, to Kyukaku, a bad person.

In a social setting, Kyukaku is a pretty light-hearted, borderline playful, person. She doesn’t tend to take many things seriously, and even when something serious does come up the girl tries to approach it with a humorous nature, often not realizing the gravity of the situation. Due to her disability, she's very expressive, with her facial features almost totally conveying anything she would need or want to say.

She also has this weird quirk where she is incredibly clumsy, to the point that it’s a feat for her to walk 5 feet without tripping. That being said, when in combat she’s incredibly coordinated despite this.

Also, because I don’t know where else to put this, she’s mute.


Kyukaku was one of the many classic stories from the edge of the Rukongai. Having been born and raised in the virtually lawless district of Kushin, the 69th district of the South Rukongai, while her family wasn’t well off they were just barely skirting the poverty line. It didn’t help that the crime rate there was what was normally expected of the outer districts.

Growing up, Kyukaku was an adventurous and rambunctious child. Her mother was protective, rightfully so given the environment, but also because Kyukaku had the tendency to just wander off and explore. See what people were up to and just in general learn about the world she was born into. Oftentimes, this would blow up in her face, with her often running into local bullies or criminal wannabes that give her a hard time. One time, she got into a real bad fight with an entire group, and while she came out alive she lost her right eye. As she grew up, she started to realize what she was seeing, register the crime that was going on around her and she wished to change it. Not for the sake of her district, but just because it would be the right thing to do. However, she couldn’t do that while just being a normal plus. To be able to enforce and protect the people of the Rukongai, she’d have to be a shinigami.

And so she applied, and easily made it in. Which leaves us to now.


○ Incredibly Coordinated, Conditionally: As spoken about briefly in her personality, when it comes to combat Kyukaku’s coordination is surprisingly high, so much so that she’s been known to have kept up in a fight while outnumbered 15 to 1. Granted this was just a common street fight in the Rukongai and she did ultimately get overpowered, it was a fight where Kyukaku was able to keep track of where each person was and what they were going to do next, studying their quite obvious body movements. Landing precise attacks are generally easy for her as long as she can see her target, despite having only one eye, things like depth perception isn’t really a huge problem for her.

This skill is semi-annoying when it comes to sign language in her everyday life however, since she lacks the coordination regularly to weave the hand signs in a smooth conversation.


○ 3 Asauchi: When she received her first asauchi at Shin’o, the old fellow there had forgotten what she had looked like and then gave her another one. And then another one. Feeling too scared to bring it back, and having been gifted them in the first place, she now just walks around with three swords on her person when deployed outside of the academy.

One of them is larger, roughly the size of her person, and is normally carried on her back. Because of it’s size, it’s assumed that this one is her main blade. The other two are standard asauchi length and tend to be on either side of her hip. If going to the academy, she only brings the larger one so she doesn’t get in trouble for having two more.
