Vanyel lay in place, flinching and trembling as Algos' voice, along with his own, continued to get louder and louder. Through his blurry, teary vision, he looked up from the darkness of his own shadow, seeing Calypso's form shifting and expanding, seeing her now taking up a large majority of the room, and without so much as a sound, "Algos" vanished from his side, retreating to the shadow near the corner of the room, the smile from before remaining stuck on her face.
He felt a set of hands graze his cheeks, and through the pounding of his heart in his ears and the loud, incessant voices that droned on and on around him, he could hear the faint, distant, almost blurry-sounding voice of Calypso. She wanted him to listen to her, begging him to look at her, to listen, to believe what she wanted to say. Her voice was so comforting, no matter how distant it sounded. He wanted to hear her voice -- to feel some semblance of comfort in this hell that was his own mind.
He struggled to try and make past the haze that obscured her voice, to try and silence the drumbeat in his head as small phantoms of pain seared at his battered wrists. In the corner of the room, "Algos" let out a loud, spiteful hiss as her neverending smile blinked away for a moment, replaced by a frown as Calypso drew closer to him, and with every inch closer to him, the haze slowly began to clear.
Even in such a monstrous form, she was still so gentle with him...
As she admitted that Algos' power, he slowly began to shrink away, and in the shadows of the room, Algos' smile grew wider and her form grew larger, her voice gradually getting louder and louder. Each word she said -- telling him that he wasn't fit to love Calypso -- felt like a knife being thrust into his heart again and again, but he still tried to keep his focus on Caly. The haze was starting to come back, and Vanyel's eyes widened in fear.
No.
No, he had to hear her.
She wanted him to hear her and listen to her, and he would. He continued to force himself past the haze, trying to block out the Goddess of Pain's words as he kept his focus on what Calypso was saying.
"Even if she's all of these things, I can never be hers."
That one line was all it took. As those words slowly processed through his mind, the sounds began to die out once again, fading into the background as his eyes widened and new tears began to flow from him. The haze began to fade away too, and her voice became clearer and clearer. He knew she was strong -- he never doubted that for a moment.
It was Algos that he both hated...and was scared of. She was willing to do whatever she could to get her way, from what he knew -- hurting the woman he loved in order to try and force Calypso to love her, and all Vanyel could do was sit on the sidelines and watch. But...she was strong now. She swore that Algos wouldn't and couldn't just pluck her away. The man's lip started to quiver as he opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
The woman's body crept upon his own, and he slowly reached out to try and embrace her. He wanted to stay. He didn't want to leave, he wanted to hold her, to kiss her, to love her, and to make her as happy as he could. He wanted her just as badly as she wanted him.
The hissing from the corner of the room grew louder, and upon looking over, Vanyel saw that her smile had contorted into a frown, her face distorting and twitching. The lights began to flicker, and with each flicker, the woman moved a step forward, slowly reaching out with a clawed hand as her mouth stretched open, letting out an even more horrific shriek as her eyes dimmed to a grim crimson. As Algos drew closer, Vanyel started to slide back, trembling.
As she inched her way toward the bed, her mouth began to flicker back into a smile -- much wider than before, as she reached out with her clawed hands to Vanyel. The man slowly swallowed the lump in his throat, and he swiped his hand in front of him, causing a wave of lightning to crackle to life in front of the bed. The flash and crackle caused "Algos" to take a few steps back, her shrieking dying down to hissing and snarling, though her smile remained as she took up her mocking tone once more.
"WEAKLING."
Just that word made Vanyel's heart sink, and his head lowered. Algos' hands fell to her sides as her head tilted to the side with a sickening crack as the lights began to flicker. She slowly began her advance again, and Vanyel slowly started to shrink back again, his hand trembling as he stared at the figure making her way towards him.
"YOU COULDN'T HELP HER. YOU JUST STOOD THERE AND WATCHED WHEN SHE WAS HURT."
