And So I Became a Shinigami
- Spoiler:
Spirits, ghosts, demons, and monsters; those where the furthest things from the young teen’s mind as he raced along the dark streets. The night air was warm and humid. There was a storm brewing high above the ground already. The light from one of the streetlights caught the boy as he ran; five foot nine inches in height, a lean but athletic build, topped with gray/silver hair. He carried a duffel bag packed with sparring equipment on his back. That was the flash that ran through the streetlights. His name was Genpaku Arishima, and he was running as though he was being pursued by rabid dogs. It had to be getting close to midnight at this rate, which was the reason for his great haste. A light fog had begun rolling in, evidence of the change in weather; it was as if the sky were sinking down meet the earth. The fog made the streetlights farther down the road look like blurred candles. If he hadn’t been in a hurry, Genpaku might have enjoyed it, for it was a rather soothing sight. Though with the backdrop, maybe not so much so; it was far too quiet even for this hour. The only sound was the sound of his own feet echoing off the walls of buildings.
Genpaku was late, and needed to get home as quickly as possible, which meant he would have to head down the alley that let out near his home. That meant he would have to do deal with the gang of boys that used the alleyway as their meeting place. It wasn’t like he hadn’t dealt with them before though. They took a special interest in harassing him, mostly because of the strange coloration of his hair; even he knew it was strange. Silver hair just wasn’t normal after all. However, he had made sure not to beat up the gang members, since his dad had enough problems with him taking the martial arts he had been taking for the past 10 years. All he needed was to give his dad a reason to pull him out of it. His father was something of a pacifist, and only allowed Genpaku to train because of the fact that his mother persuaded him.
He rounded the corner that led down the alleyway, expecting to see the five or six gang members who would turn and smile at him as their night picked up in interest. Instead, what he saw was nothing, strangely enough. He stopped mid step to blink. However, he didn’t question it; it was a godsend to him. He took off again, running down the alleyway. He was down it and out within a matter of seconds; there was a reason he was his school’s track star. Unfortunately, he missed something important as he ran down the hall; he missed the four bodies that were suspended from the building above. Lifeless, cold, and limp, the bodies hung there like dolls. They wouldn’t be found until the next day, along with a fifth.
He cleared the distance between the alleyway entrance and his home’s door in twelve seconds; he would have been congratulated if his couch had seen the sprint. He leaned against the overhang that lead up to the door for a few moments, winded from all of the running. He looked up at the old house that was his home since he could remember. It was spacious, and for now it stood silent and dark. It looked like everyone had gone to bed already; perfect. That was his thought on it anyway. He fumbled in his pocket a moment before he pulled his keys out, and put the house key in the lock, opening the door as quietly as he could.
The house was quieter than it normally was, and it seemed darker too. Genpaku had to blink once or twice before he could take another step. He set one foot in the house, and a chill ran down his spine. What was this feeling? The moment he had entered the house, he had gotten this strange feeling; a urge to turn and run from the house, run as fast as he could. That was the first time he had ever gotten that feeling; he pushed it away. He walked in quietly, removing his shoes and closing the door behind him. He shouldered his bag once more and started across the entryway as he made for the stairs to get to his room.
That was when the light turn on, all but blinding him. He stood there like a deer caught in the headlights of a speeding truck as he saw his family sitting on the couch, lined up in a nice little row.
“There you are. We were worried sick about you, Genpaku.”
Those were the words Genpaku had expected from his mother, but they came from his father. His father was a tough disciplinarian, and he had warned Genpaku before he had left for the training and tournament Genpaku had just came back from that if he got back late there would be hell to pay. Genpaku just blinked once or twice. His eyes moved from his family to the wall behind them. Was he seeing things? It looked like there was some kind of shimmer. Whatever it was, it didn’t look normal. Again, the strange feeling from before came back, only stronger this time. Genpaku’s foot moved back unconsciously.
“Genpaku, are you alright?” his father asked.
“Um, maybe. Did you just…not yell at me?” Genpaku asked.
“I was just worried about you. Is that so strange?” his father asked. In reality, it was. Genpaku’s dad should have been going off like a bomb by now.
“Are you catching something, Genpaku? Come here and let me check you temperature,” Genpaku’s mother spoke up. Her voice sounded off. His mother had a very warm voice, filled with joy. It lacked both of those things this time around. Genpaku’s eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at his family. They were acting strange in general at this point. His brother just sat there and smiled. Genpaku took a step towards his mother.
“That’s right. Come here so I can check you. Then I’ll get you something sweet to eat.”
Genpaku stopped dead in his tracks, staring at his mother. His mother’s expression didn’t change; it was the same blank stare. That was the one comment that tipped Genpaku off; he took several steps back, his instincts screaming at him to run from this place with all of his might.
“Mom, you don’t like us having sweet things. What’s wrong with you?” he asked. His mother didn’t really react. Instead, something moved out of the corner of his vision; the strange blur from before.
“Damn, it seems I messed up,” said a new voice; it was a deep voice with a strange garbled quality that made it seem inhuman, and it sent more chills down his spine. He turned to look dead at the blur as he saw a movement, and saw something shoot out straight towards him!
He moved as his training kicked in. The ground where he had been a moment before broke as he rolled to the left just before part of the blur slammed into it. The blur stopped, and part of it moved again. Genpaku felt eyes on him, and they made his skin crawl even though he could not see them.
“Oh? So you can see me little morsel? Good. I was right in assuming it was you with the most spiritual power in this house.” Those were the words the blur said, and Genpaku just got to his feet again, though now he had slipped into a fighting stance almost automatically. He wasn’t sure what he was fighting though.
“I suppose there is no reason to keep this illusion up any longer then,” the voice said, and the house suddenly shimmered and twisted.
Genpaku nearly threw up. The coppery aroma of blood assaulted his senses as the real scene was revealed before him. There was blood and gore everywhere. However, it was Genpaku’s family that really made him gag. He didn’t have the time to actually look; the blur had bolted from the wall, which cracked and groaned from the force. Genpaku rolled once more, back into the entry hall as the blur slammed into where he had been. Whatever it was, he could make out the general shape. It was extremely long. It looked as though it extended over most of the living room. There was a hole in the ceiling where it had come through. It moved as it looked up at where Genpaku was now. It coiled to lung, and Genpaku turned again. The wall behind him exploded as something impacted with it, but he had already wrenched the door open. He slammed it shut as he took off at a sprint that made his previous one look like he was jogging.
There was the sound of wood splintering and breaking a moment later, but Genpaku didn’t look back. He was sprinting straight for the alleyway.
“Your pretty fast, boy,” said the chilling voice again, and Genpaku look to his left; the thing was right there. There something hit him. It hit him harder than he had ever been hit before. It felt like someone had just taken a car and rammed it into him. He had been at least twenty feet from the mouth of the alleyway, but with that one hit he impacted against the far wall, back first. He felt something crack with the impact, and his vision blurred and danced ahead of him as his mind tried to catch up with what had just happened. It didn’t get a chance as four something’s rammed into his chest; this time something broke. Whatever it was that had slammed into his chest, they didn’t let up on the pressure, and he could feel as another three ribs broke. He coughed, and tasted the coppery taste that meant only one thing; blood. His vision slowly focused once more and he got a look at what was holding him.
It was long, at least thirty feet. It had a multitude of appendages, most of them looking like legs. Already the creature reminded him of a giant centipede. The top eight appendages on its upper body were curved and pointed like sickles; four of these were pressed into Genpaku’s chest. The creature’s head was a mask; bone white with holes where the eyes should have been. There were two pinpricks of golden light in those eyes. The creature had a part that looked like a mouth, but it was hard to tell if that was what it was. Though the creature was rapidly becoming clearer, it was still somewhat cloudy. The creature let out a series of low chuckles.
“You can see me, can’t you little human?”
The creature’s voice was the one that sent chills down Genpaku’s spine, and the creature pressed harder with its arm like appendages, which resulted in Genpaku letting out a scream of pain as more bones broke in other places. The scream echoed off the walls, and should have woke someone up; it would have had the area not been cut off by the creature’s power. The monster let out a laugh at Genpaku’s pain. It let up with two of its appendages, and brought them back as though it were standing there with its arms opened. Genpaku coughed, and more blood showed up. His vision had all but cleared; the creature was clear now. It was looking right at him now.
“Ah yes, your soul will be most filling. However, I don’t think you’ve been tormented quite enough. You need more seasoning!” the creature yelled, and one of the creature’s arm slammed back into Genpaku, point first. It went straight through the skin and bones, nearly hitting his heart and lung. His eyes went wide as the pain swept through him. The other three sickle like appendages came down, slamming into the area around his collar bone and shoulders, leaving huge, bleeding gashes. Then they rose back up to slam into another spot. Both sides were punctured in the same fashion as the first blow, and with each blow Genpaku let out a yell. However, with each blow the yell got weaker.
The creature brought up one of the sickles again, aiming to strike. However, there was the slicing sound, and the creature let out a yell, pulling the sickle like appendages out of Genpaku as the one it had just raised up fell to the ground, severed from the body. The creature looked back at a man that had just appeared in the alleyway. He was dressed in strange garb; a black hakama and matching gi, tied with a similar obi. It was a really old outfit. That registered somewhere in Genpaku’s mind, behind all of the pain. The man was holding a katana which was stained with blood. The creature turned and flung Genpaku backwards down the alleyway; he hit the ground with another sickening crack as a few more bones broke. He landed in a puddle of trash fluid, vomit, and his own blood as it drained out of him. He could see the standoff from where he lay, though his vision was rapidly fading.
The man cursed as the hollow tossed Genpaku aside. However, the man had almost no time to do anything about it; the creature was upon him in a moment, its claws flashing to and fro at the man, glistening in the light scattered by the encroaching fog with the boy’s blood.
”Damn shinigami! Do you know how much effort it takes to regrow these?” the creature bellowed, and a new sickle appendage burst forth from the stump, slamming down where the man had been. The man jumped back out of the way of the attack, but he was steadily being pushed back away by the creature. He was simply being overpowered.
Genpaku watched from his place on the ground. Broken, bloodied, and barely conscious a thousand questions assaulted his mind. However, he couldn’t focus on any of them. Inky blackness was clawing at the edges of his vision, and already he felt like he was going cold. As that happened, Genpaku’s thoughts solidified slightly so that he was able to ask himself some of the questions.
“Shinigami? What the hell is a Shinigami? What is that creature? What is going on? Why does it hurt so damn much? Why my family? Why me?” These thoughts flooded his mind as he watched the fight; the man that had appeared was being overrun by the monster. Was he destined to die here as well, trying to save Genpaku? That thought angered him; he didn’t want to be saved. He shouldn’t have to be saved. But he couldn’t move. Was this the end of the line?
“I don’t want to die here! I can’t let someone else die for me! I have to avenge my family! I can’t die here!” he screamed in his mind.
“Then don’t.”
The new voice rang out as clear as if it had been standing right next to Genpaku. He blinked; he wasn’t in the alleyway anymore. In fact, he wasn’t anywhere he was familiar with at this point. What he saw around him now was a strange Arena like place, made of solid stone. It was worn and old looking, and above him there was a raging thunder storm. Thunder echoed and roared, and lightning snaked across the clouds. He had to raise up an arm as a gust of wind kicked up; dust and rocks were flying everywhere; it was chaos. He squinted, trying to keep the dust from getting in his eyes as he tried to figure out what the hell was going on.
That was when he noticed he wasn’t alone. Standing across from him was a tall man. He was dressed in similar garb to the man who had appeared and had been fighting the creature back in the alleyway. The same Hakama, Obi, and Gi, but in addition to that he wore a strange overcoat. The man stood in the center of this apparent storm, looking nowhere else but at Genpaku. Gen tried to take a step forward, but the winds kicked up again, roaring as lightning blazed somewhere overhead.
“Who are you?” Genpaku called out. The man opened his mouth to say something, but whatever he said was lost to the wind. When Genpaku didn’t respond in the slightest, the man seemed to give a slight sigh.
“So you can’t hear me yet. I guess only so much progress can be made at once then again,” Those were the first words the man said that Genpaku said, and it sounded as though the man was standing right next to him despite the maelstrom around them.
“That doesn’t answer my question. Who are you, and what the hell is going on?” Genpaku yelled back, and a light chuckle could be heard. Genpaku scowled.
“I’m your soul,” the man said, and Genpaku just blinked.
“I’m your soul, and you are about out of time,” the man reiterated, and as he said the last thing the ground began to break and shatter as lightning struck the ground. Genpaku took a step back, shielding his eyes again. When he looked, the man had moved, and was standing where the lightning had struck, next to a katana. Where had that come from?
“In a few moments, you’re going to die. Yet, all you can do is stand around. Maybe it would have been better if the Hollow had devoured you and saved me the trouble.”
Hollow. Genpaku narrowed his eyes; what the hell was a Hollow? As if to answer the question, an image of the strange creature that had attacked him appeared. The man looked at it a moment before it faded away, a look of utter disgust crossing his face in that moment.
“Now, a Shinigami will die trying to save you. The Hollow will get two very nice meals I suppose,” the man said, and turned as if to leave. The ground was breaking apart, falling down into an endless abyss below. A chasm had formed between where Genpaku stood and where the man was walking away from..
“Wait! Why do you know so much? Can you help me?” Genpaku yelled, taking another step forward. The man looked back; the sword he had left. He walked back to it, and wrapped his hand around it.
“I know a great deal because I do. As for helping you, what will you do in return?” the man asked. Genpaku just looked back at him. What could he do? Whatever this world was, it was falling apart around them, being torn apart by winds and lightning. He was dying, and this man asked what he’d do in return. Genpaku’s eyes narrowed at the man after a moment.
“You’re my soul right? What is a Shinigami?” Genpaku asked. The man raised an eyebrow.
“Shinigamis are gods of death, as the name implies. They guide good souls to Soul Society, and they purify those creatures, Hollows, by slaying them. That is the basis of a Shinigami’s duty. Why do you ask?”
“So Shinigami are dead then? They are souls?” Genpaku asked, ignoring the man’s question.
“Indeed,” the man replied.
“How do they slay Hollows then?” Genpaku asked. The ground near Genpaku crumbled and began to fall away, forcing the young boy to take several steps back.
“They use their Zanpakutou, a weapon that is a piece of their own soul to slay the monsters.”
Genpaku was silent for a few moments as he added things up in his head.
“Alright, I’ll make you a deal.”
“Die damn you, Shinigami!” the Hollow roared as it lashed out once more against the Shinigami. The man wasn’t in good shape at all. He had several deep cuts along his torso and arms. The Hollow simply had too many weapons to attack with; he couldn’t get an attack in. As the Hollow struck out once more, he dodged backwards to get out of the range of the attack, only to be hit by the creature’s tail. He went flying into the wall next to him. The Hollow let out a roar and slammed into the wall. The shinigami emerged from the dust cloud, lucky that he had gotten out of the way, as the Hollow pulled the four sickle like appendages out of the wall where deep holes were left. He readied his Zanpakutou, and as the Hollow charged him he moved forward, trying to get a swing in. However, he was hit from the left by one of the sickles. It was a blunt part, so all it did was toss him in the air, but as he was in the air the Hollow hit him with another sickle, sending him up into the air. It turned the first sickle so that the point was aimed at Jarred.
The Hollow couldn’t believe its luck. Here he had just been going after a boy with an unusual amount of spiritual power, and now it was going to get a Shinigami for desert. It watched as the Shinigami floated in the air, its sickle poised for the finishing blow. The Shinigami seemed to fall so slowly now though. That’s what the Hollow got for being impatient. Finally, the Shinigami had fallen far enough that the Hollow could strike. It started the attack, when a new reiatsu hit the area. The Hollow didn’t even have time to look around; its arm was sundered and hit the ground as it let out a howl of deep pain. It looked around, trying to figure out what had just happened. The other Shinigami hit the ground a few feet away, coughing and rolling away. The new reiatsu hadn’t diminished from when it had first spike up, and now the Hollow locked on to where it was coming from. There was a new Shinigami standing at the mouth of the alleyway. He looked familiar too. Average height, decent build, silver hai-
The Hollow turned and looked back at Genpaku’s broken and crippled body; it was still there, but now the soul was gone! It turned back to face the new Shinigami, the very boy he had just been hunting! Genpaku was staring dead on at the Hollow, with so much malice and hatred built up in his eyes the Hollow couldn’t even return the look. The Hollow let out another yell.
“How the hell did you get Shinigami powers boy!” it roared at Genpaku, but instead of an answer, Genpaku took one step towards the Hollow, reaching for one of the two swords at his side.
Then another sickle broke off as Genpaku appeared behind the Hollow, a blade drawn. The Hollow roared once more, spinning around to slam one of its remaining sickles into the ground where Genpaku had been. The Hollow felt something land on top of the sickle, and a moment later the appendage was severed. Genpaku stood on the sickle, having driven it into the ground when he landed on it, and he continued to glare straight at the hollow. What the Hollow was facing was a Shinigami whose speed far exceeded what it should have been, and who was bent on revenge for the actions it had taken. The Hollow brought its tail up and slammed it into the ground now, trying to squash Genpaku.
Genpaku jumped backwards as the creature attacked, and landed a few feet away. This was more power than he thought he would have gotten, and he loved it. The Hollow looked up and something akin to fear flashed through its eyes.
“That’s right Hollow, be afraid. Be afraid, and fall,”Genpaku yelled, and ran towards the Hollow. To the Hollow, he vanished from his eyesight. The rest of the sickle like appendages on its left side dropped to the ground as Genpaku slashed straight down, severing each one so that the Hollow fell, off balance.
The Hollow fell straight down so that the tip of Genpaku’s Zanpakutou was resting against its neck. Its yellow eyes widened as it felt the pressure.
“Die,” Genpaku said, and pushed, the blade plunging into the Hollow’s flesh. It broke out the back, and the Hollow let out a roar of pain as Genpaku turned the blade and slashed out the side of the Hollow’s neck. Then he moved once more, and the blade exploded through the Hollow’s chest, the cutting edge of the blade facing up. Genpaku forced the blade up, releasing a great deal of reiatsu as he did, and cut clean through the Hollow’s chest and through the mask. Then he jumped off the Hollow as it let out its death knell and dissipated.
The other shinigami just watched, dumbfounded as this boy who had just acquired Shinigami powers from who knows where literally tore the Hollow to shreds before purifying the monster. Genpaku walked over to where his body lay, broken and twisted, bloodied and ravaged. The boy was silent for some time before he knelt down and wiped the Hollow’s blood on the remains of his old shirt. Then Genpaku got up, and looked over his shoulder at his would be savior.
“It really isn’t polite to stare, you know?” Genpaku asked, the first words the boy had spoken to his would be savior. The shinigami fumbled for words for a few moments.
“How did you obtain Shinigami powers?” he finally managed to get out. Genpaku looked back at him for a moment.
“I didn’t want to die,” the boy finally said. The shinigami just blinked once or twice.
“As the Shinigami in charge of this area, I am ordering you to return with me to speak with the so-taicho of the Gotei 13,” the shinigami said, and took a step towards the boy. However, Genpaku was gone; he appeared at the other end of the alleyway, behind the Shinigami.
“I can’t do that,” the boy said.
“And why not?”
“Because I made a deal with my soul. Before I do anything else, I would slay one-thousand Hollows. That is the deal I made for my powers,” Genpaku responded.
“You don’t get it. This isn’t up for discussion.” The shinigami said, and turned to start towards him, his blade drawn.
“No, you don’t get it, Shinigami. I won’t go. I have to do this, and it will take more than you to stop me,” Genpaku said, and as he did his reiatsu spiked again, making the other Shinigami stop in his tracks. Genpaku took advantage of the situation; he bolted. He took off at speeds that made his old track records look like he was running with one leg. Truly, this power was amazing. However, he could tell the other Shinigami was following him; he felt a presence that told him. It had something to do with the power he was putting out probably. The man had said something about that. He closed his eyes a moment, and forced his emotions down. As he did, his reiatsu dropped. Then he pushed harder, and all but disappeared from sight.
Genpaku didn’t quit running for a good ten minutes. By then, he had crossed most of town, and was at the industrial area. Around here, there were always lights and a few skyscraper-like buildings. He stopped at the base of one such building, looking up towards the top of the building, and towards the growing storm that was loaming not so far away. He bent his knees and pushed off, disappearing from sight once more as he literally flew up to the top of the building. He landed, and looked around. He took a few steps and ended up at the edge of the building, where he sat down. He let his legs hang over the edge of the building as he looked out over the ground below. Because of the fog the lights of the city below him looked muffled and blurred, giving a soft glow to the whole scene.
Maybe it was the fog, or maybe it was the tears in Genpaku’s eyes. There was a crack of thunder above. Genpaku couldn’t hold it in any longer, and he let his head drop into his hands as he started to cry. So many things had just happened, and without the distraction of running to avoid being caught, with the absence of something to take his anger out on all he could do was let his feeling well up and burst forth. He hadn’t cried in year, but he couldn’t help it any longer. Not only had he learned of things he shouldn’t have had to learn about for another 60 years or so, but he had just lost everything he had ever cared for. His family, his life, everything; all because of a creature’s need to feed on some kind of power he barely understood.
The clouds broke then, and rain slammed down upon the earth below as Genpaku sat there. He barely allowed himself to notice the pouring rain though. He just sat there, letting his feeling empty with each tear. Slowly, he calmed. He calmed as much as you could expect someone to in the kind of situation Genpaku had just found himself in. He looked up, watching the rain fall. He looked down, and drew his Zanpakutou for a short time before he sheathed it, and pushed himself to his feet. He looked back in the direction he had ran from. Then he jumped, allowing himself to fall.
Genpaku walked slowly into the house he had lived in while he was alive. Now he could see the full extent of the damages the Hollow had reaped. There was a huge hole in the ceiling where it had made its entrance. The foyer was covered in blood at this point, the walls were torn up. The paintings that had hung on the wall were ripped or blood splattered, so all together ruined. He looked back out into the street where part of the door was. The Hollow had just barreled through the thing when Genpaku had slammed it in its face. He turned back and took a few more steps in so he could see the living room.
Sitting there still, like a macabre family photo, was his family. He couldn’t even really tell they were his family anymore. His brother’s front was ripped and torn, and one of his eyes was missing. His father’s head was all but severed from the rest of his body, and there were a large number of puncture wounds in his body. Genpaku’s mother was no longer recognizable, her beautiful face marred and ripped beyond recognition. She was also missing an arm. All of their clothes were blood soaked, and the couch was too. It took everything Genpaku had to not let his reiatsu spike and attract everything Shinigami in the area.
He turned and walked out of the room. Their souls were missing, and he knew that. The Hollow had eaten them, he was sure of that, which meant that they would be hollows as well. Genpaku walked through the rest of the house, looking over what remained of it. Because of the Hollow’s ability to create illusions, no one around the house had heard anything Genpaku guessed. That explained why no cops or firemen had shown up on the scene yet. He’d have to fix that before he left. He knew exactly how he could do that too.
He walked up to his father’s study, and walked over to a painting of a beach. With that, he drew a Zanpakutou, and slashed the area near the painting, letting out some power as he did. The result was a small explosion as the wall next to where his father’s safe was located was damaged. He looked out the window to see a light turn on next door. He repeated the trick once more, breaking the safe open. Inside were many things, but the most important was the family will. His job here was done. He sheathed his blade and made his way down the stairs, but stopped for a moment, looking at the remains of his family.
“One thousand hollows. I will slay one thousand hollows before anything else. I swear it,” Genpaku says, and then takes off running as a few people walk over to see what had happened to the house. A scream pierced the night.
Capture
- Spoiler:
The murder of the Arishima family made front page the next day. It was called the latest attack of a serial killer, and one was found and executed for the crime. This was how the government had to cover things up considering it had no idea how any of this happened. It was filed under the unexplainable deaths file, and left at that. The bodies were collected and moved, and with time the events became a back thought of the living. Genpaku found out the explanation for what had happened, and half wanted to destroy the government building for the phony story. But he couldn’t do that. It wouldn’t be right. No one living knew about what was happening. No one knew what actually happened on that October day in 1888 but Genpaku and Soul Society.
Rumors were running rampant in Soul Society about the strange Shinigami that had appeared in the human world. Jarred Reino, the seventh seat of the first division was the one who brought in the initial report, taking it straight to his captain after he had lost track of the strange Shinigami whose speed was incredible and whose reiatsu was frighteningly high. In response, a search team was sent out to find the Shinigami, but it came back empty handed. Apparently, Genpaku had learned rather quickly the basics of controlling how much power he used and how much he let off, as he was able to evade capture. Of course, part of it was that Soul Society had much more important things to take care of rather than the appearance of some strange Shinigami.
With Soul Society in such disarray, a small matter like a strange Shinigami destroying Hollows in the real world was something that fell on the back burner. However, reports did come in on the Shinigami’s activities. However, these reports were few and far between. Genpaku earned the nickname “The Phantom Shinigami” because of the fact that he usually was there, dispatched the Hollow, and vanished before another Shinigami got to the place. He abused his natural speed and agility both in fighting those hollow she found and in escaping from Shinigami who had managed to arrive before him and attempted to bring him in.
Things took a change as he neared the completion of his oath, however. Genpaku had managed to evade capture for a good number of years by this point, since his capture was a low priority they never sent truly strong people after him. He was unfortunate however in that, when he was just sixteen hollows shy of his goal he ran into a different tier of Shinigami. He had been in the middle of a fight with a specific hollow; his brother, to be exact. The battle had lasted longer than most of his other fights. However, as he finally finished his brother off, sending him on, he turned to find a Shinigami simply standing, yards away, watching him. He was dressed similarly to the man that had appeared to him the day he had died; the white haori hung about his shoulders. Genpaku started to run, heading in a different direction when the man appeared ahead of him again; Genpaku jumped back and away.
He took in the man before him with a cautious eye. Already, the strange Shinigami had proven he was unbelievably fast. That was the advantage that Genpaku had on most of his opponents, so that was going to be a problem. Besides that, the man didn’t seem too different from the other Shinigami he had seen. The only characteristic he saw different was the white haori he was wearing. Genpaku setup in a fighting stance, his Zanpakutou held at the ready. The man across from him just looked back.
“Good evening, Phantom-Shinigami-kun,” the man said in a cheery tone. Genpaku’s eyes narrowed. “Come now, this doesn’t have to come down to violence. All I’m asking is that you come with me,” the man said, and Genpaku tensed. He was just like the others.
That was why Genpaku didn’t wait for the man to ask more. He shot forward, aiming to slice the Shinigami. Hopefully, the man would be too confused by being attacked to follow Genpaku when he continued on his way. However, as Genpaku got within strike range and swung, his blade stopped halfway, the blade caught in the man’s hand. Instead of standing there, wondering how the man had done that, Genpaku gave pressure, and started to jump up, so that he could use the held blade as leverage and get a kick in. Such a tactic would accomplish his goals all the same. However, no sooner had he started this than he felt a hand on his wrist. There was a tug, and he was suddenly upside down, and then he slammed into the ground with a thud, knocking the wind out of him.
He gave a cough as he rolled over and jumped up to his feet, expecting to be pushed onto the defensive right away. Instead, he found the strange Shinigami in white standing there, looking at him as if expecting Genpaku to carry on a conversation. Genpaku had no such intention; he needed to get out of here, since all this Shinigami wanted to do was bring him in. That wasn’t what Genpaku could do. He had an oath to complete. As such, he shot forward again, but this time he tried a feint attack: the result wasn’t what he had expected. He got within range, and the man vanished!
The Captain appeared behind Genpaku, a look of mild amusement on his face. He extended his hand so that it was just behind the Shinigami’s head, and gave a small push of his power. The result was a blast that hit Genpaku, and sent him flying forward into the wall ahead of him. The Captain started forward, fully expecting to have knocked out the young Shinigami. However, when he did start walking, Genpaku turned over, glaring at him but obviously dazed. He was also trying to figure out what had just happened. He had felt the man’s power from the force of the blow, and he was well aware of one thing: he couldn’t win a straight out fight with this Shinigami. He was just too strong.
The Captain came to a stop, appraising the boy once more. He was tough, fast, and knew how to use a sword. That was what he had gotten so far. For the time being he had no apparent knowledge of how to use kido based attacks, it seemed. There was a hint that he was also strong in hakudo techniques, which was interesting.
“It should be apparent to you now that you can’t win, Phantom-Shinigami-kun.” the Captain said, much to Genpaku’s annoyance. The subtle use of language as an insult really got to him at the moment.
“So why is it that you want to continue fighting? What is so important that you wish to continue fighting an opponent that by now you know you cannot win against?” the Captain pressed. What was driving him?
“I have an oath to keep. I will die again before I allow myself to fail to uphold that oath,” was Genpaku’s answer. The Shinigami in white raised an eyebrow.
“What was this oath then?” he asked. That struck Genpaku as strange. It was obvious that by now this Shinigami could have taken him away.
“I swore I would slay one thousand hollows before I did anything else,” Genpaku responded, pushing himself to his feet using his blade.
“And how many more do you have left to kill?”
“That marked the nine hundredth and eighty-forth,” Genpaku answered again.
“So you only have sixteen hollows left to slay before you would come along willingly? What if I let you finish what you had started?
“I would simply stay nearby so that once you were done with what you had set out to do, you would come along. I wouldn’t interfere with the fights in the slightest. Because otherwise, it will be troublesome for me if I don’t bring you back,” the Shinigami in white said, offering something that no other Shinigami had given Genpaku: a chance to finish what he needed to do. Genpaku took a moment to weigh his options. That was his option. He could neither outfight nor outrun this Shinigami. If he didn’t take this offer, he would be pulled off to Soul Society, and he would fail the oath he swore on his family. He agreed.
It took Genpaku another seven days to finish what he had started. When Genpaku slew the last hollow, the Captain walked forward, and opened a gate to Seireitei. Genpaku turned and looked at it and the Captain, and for a moment he thought about running. But, he knew it would be useless to do so. He sheathed his blade, and followed The Captain through the gate.
Soul Society and the Twin Blade Legacy
- Spoiler:
Genpaku was led through the Senkai gate and thus was the first time he laid eyes on Soul Society, and on Seireitei. He came to a stop as he looked over this new world. He was allowed to stand for only a few moments before he was urged forward. He was led through a maze of hallways and passages until they came to a large door with the number 1 on it. He was led through this door to the First Division headquarters and eventually to the office of the Sotaicho of the Gotei 13; Yamamoto-Genryuusai. Of course, at the time, Genpaku had no idea what that actually meant, but the air about the man as he met him was enough to tell him that he shouldn’t fool around.
The meeting was brief, and Genpaku was honest and recounted the events that led to his acquisition of his Shinigami powers and what he had done afterwards. He was then led away and to a holding cell while a decision was reached. He of course did not like being held like a common criminal, especially with how co-operative he had been thus far, but in the end his arguments had fallen on deaf ears. Oddly enough, however, he was allowed to hold onto his zanpaku-tous while he was housed in the cell; Genpaku figured this was a test. While he had them, he could break out of the holding cell. However, doing that would make him a criminal, and would undermine his cooperation thus far. So, instead, he sat there quietly and waited.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held to decide what course of action should be taken with the anomaly known as Genpaku Arishima. Yamamoto-Genryuusai was the one with the answer to the question that most brought up; why did this shinigami in possession of two zanpaku-tous? Several hundred years prior, there had been a family line within Soul Society that possessed the unique ability to pass on their shinigami powers to later generations. However, this came at the cost of sealing their own powers away. In addition, which generation that power would show up again in was unknown. So while the power was unique and interesting, it served no practical use.
Several hundred years ago that family line all but vanished when a dispute broke out within the house and lead to a civil conflict between members. The details about the dispute where never cleared up since the whole incident sprang up and was resolved within two days. One of Genpaku’s ancestors had resolved the situation by slaying the rest of the family, stealing a gigai, and fleeing to the human world. Shortly after that, he disappeared all together when he sealed away his own powers using the family technique. It appeared that, since then, the ancestor had lived out the rest of his time until the gigai had ceased working and his soul, lacking any spiritual power at that point, passed on.
Since then Genpaku’s family had lived on, ignorant of their heritage until his ancestor’s power had awoken within him in response to the hollow attack. Such a shinigami could be a useful asset to the Gotei 13, if he was willing to co-operate further that was. Several hours later, Genpaku was pulled from this cell and brought back before the So-taicho and presented with a question: would he serve Soul Society? He was silent for a few moments as he contemplated his position and the offer. Finally, he spoke.
”I’ve nowhere to return to ,a nd none to fight for. Where else could I go but here?”
He was enrolled in the Shinigami Academy shortly afterwards for formal training.
Formal Training: The Shinou Academy and Early Division
- Spoiler:
Genpaku was enrolled in the Shinou Academy for formal training around 1940. He would spend two years in the academy before graduating; he says that’s only because of the challenege he had laid before himself before he had come to Soul Society. Slaying a thousand hollows had forced him to grow at a rapid pace, and so there was not much for him to learn out of zanjutsu or hakudo. He picked up kidou quickly enough, being a diligent worker and constantly striving for perfection. He was placed in class 1 for obvious reasons, and made many friends during those years. He graduated and applied to enter the Gotei 13, and joined the Seventh Division.
Despite being placed into the Seventh Division though, Genpaku constantly visited other divisions and trained with them. He knew he had must to learn yet, despite how well he had done at the Academy, and he was motivated to learn as much as he could. He wouldn’t learn enough from only a single division, so he sought out the other divisions to see what he could learn from them. He sought out others that were as strong as he was to train with, and sought out stronger people to learn from.
The First Blade: Raiden
- Spoiler:
Genpaku’s training wasn’t just to aid his own powers, however. Genpaku was seeking something specific; the names of his Zanpaku-tous. He hadn’t missed the strangeness of his possession of two Zanpaku-tous, and had done some research of his own. He didn’t know that he could have asked someone about his powers and his past; instead he sought it out on his own. It took him a great deal of time to sift through the archives before he found the small blip in history that set things in motion for him. That single blip set the wheels in motion once again for him as well, as he began to think upon the implications of the information. He had two zanpaku-tous because he had two sets of Shinigami powers at work within him which more or less fused to be his power. That meant he also had two names he needed to discover.
This was one of the driving forces behind Genpaku’s considerable motivation. He wanted strength, for a plethora of reasons; above that, he wanted to discover what he was capable of. It took him another 40 years before he succeeded in acquiring the first name; he discovered it in the heart of battle just as he had with his powers in general. He had been on patrol when a strong hollow had attacked the area he was patrolling; unlike normal, this hollow attacked him instead of a ghost or a similar being. Genpaku sensed the intent just before the hollow launched its attack, nearly impaling him. Genpaku dodged out of the way, turning to face his assailant; the hollow had brown skin and the mask that reminded Gen of a frog. He had just drawn his blade when the creature launched another attack; a tongue like appendage, which looked more like a spear, shot out towards him at frightening speed. He brought his zanpaku-tou to deflect the attack; he noted as the spear point hit that it had surprisingly little weight to it. He lashed out, and cleaved into the appendage, but found a great deal of resistance to the attack. The hollow retracted the appendage, and began to cackle.
”Oh ho! So you can actually cut my tongue eh? Too bad it doesn’t mean a damn thing, Shinigami!”
The hollow stuck its tongue out, and already the wound that had been on it had vanished, healed over. Genpaku mentally cursed, and decided he needed to get on the offense now. He shot forward, deflecting the appendage with his blade as he charged. He felt something slam into his back right shoulder, however and stopped his charge to look back as the appendage sank in. He grimaced, and spun around to slice off the appendage all together. When he did though, the appendage disengaged itself from the spear point, and retracted into the hollows mouth; said hollow let out another cackle as Gen pulled the spearhead out, wincing as he did so, and turned back to the Hollow. This was bad; the hollow shot the barb out again, a new spearhead attached. Gen shot to the left to dodge, but the tongue literally turned and followed him. He changed direction and shot backwards, and as he flew backwards the tongue suddenly came to a halt and retracted. Genpaku shot forward again, charging the hollow; it launched its tongue attack at him again.
Genpaku changed direction and shot downwards, and the tongue followed. He stopped and shot up at an angle, aiming to pass the tongue, but it changed directions and came straight for him. He shot to the left, and it followed him out to a certain point at which point it retracted again. He had worked out about the max distance the hollow could shoot from, but it didn’t change the fact that, at the moment, the hollow could react faster than him. He held out a hand.
”Shakahou!” [i]he called out, and a blaze of red flame shot out towards the hollow. The hollow opened its mouth and shot out its tongue again, which slammed into and through the attack and continued on towards Genpaku; he shot to the left and launched another shakahou to try and catch the hollow while it had already launched its attack; whoever, the tongue changed course and slammed through that attack too.
Then the hollow pushed for the offensive, and shot forward while retracting the tongue, before launching it again at him. He shot forward towards the hollow and the oncoming projectile, but changed course and shot down, trying to escape the attack; it followed him down. He stopped and moved to the side in hopes of grabbing a seconds worth of time to escape with, but the attack had already changed course and doubled back on him. He watched the attack home in on him. And then everything stopped. He blinked, and was no longer in the human world.
He stood at the center of a large stone arena. Above him a large storm hung, lightning coursed over the clouds from time to time. He remembered this place from when he had been dying; only now, it seemed infinitely calmer than last time. And standing across from him was the man from before. Now Genpaku got a real chance to look at him. He was a tall man, easily standing at least six and a half feet tall. His shoulders were broad, he had long black hair that hung messily about his head, and piercing yellow eyes that currently stared straight back at Genpaku.
”Long time no see.” Genpaku said.
”You’re pretty calm for someone who is facing a fatal blow outside this world, you know.”
Genpaku merely gave a shrug. ”What, should I be screaming? I’ll think of something. For now, I’m more interested in why you’ve shown yourself to me now, of all times, after so many years of silence.”
The Zanpaku-tou spirit smirked.
”Because you’ve been searching for me,” it replied.
”Both of you, actually,” Genpaku retorted. The Zanpaku-tou spirit blinked, and then chuckled lightly. A sudden breeze rolled through the arena, and Genpaku spun around as he heard a light laugh come from somewhere.
”For now, you have me. Tell me, what do you seek power for?” the Zanpaku-tou spirit called out, and Genpaku looked back with a raised eyebrow. He was quiet for a moment as he thought.
”I seek power to know what my limits are, so I know what I can do. It’s a greedy reason, I’m aware, but that is what I seek power for right now; for myself. I’m no use to anyone dead,”
The zanpaku-tou spirit seemed to be content with that answer. He started to laugh as he stood there, and there was the sudden crack of thunder. The arena around him began to dissolve, back to the real world, but not before the spirit spoke again.
”That will suffice, Arishima Genpaku. What once blocked your ears from my name was worthless vengeance and anger. Use my power to protect yourself, and to survive. My name is…”
The hollow’s attack closed in on the boy as there was a sudden spike in Reiatsu. Genpaku brought his blade to bare and deflected the first blow.
”Pierce the night, Raiden!” he called out, and another burst of reiatsu signaled the release of the sword. The zanpaku-tou glowed and shifted appearance to that of his shikai, at which point he spun around and cut through the tongue. The spear tip fell harmlessly down to the ground as Genpaku turned his attention to the Hollow. It began to retract the tongue to rearm, but it felt a strange lag between its thoughts and its actions. Genpaku was upon him in that moment of lag, and within another few moments the hollow was dispatched. Genpaku returned to Soul Society to get his wound treated, injured by happy that he had discovered the name of his first blade; the blade handed down to him from his ancestor.
Fujin: The Second Blade
- Spoiler:
Genpaku’s second blade made its appearance to him at a very different time; during the invasion by the demon Ender. Ender had invaded the Soul Society, and sought to control it. With Ender came a horde of demons that set upon the member of the Gotei 13. Genpaku fought alongside his Division members during this invasion, attempting to cover them as they made their retreat towards the underground bunkers that the other divisions were heading for. However, with the number of demons relentlessly attacking them, it was hard to keep on the move. Constantly, members were being picked off and pulled into solo fights before they were jumped upon and devoured.
Genpaku could only do so much. He was a fourth seat by this time, and had taken the responsibility of the seat very seriously, and attempted to watch over the lower seat members. However, with the chaos that Ender’s invasion brought there was only so much he could do. He only had so much power then, and even using as much of it as he could with Raiden, it wasn’t enough. He took a stance as the demons formed up to rush them again; they surged forward and Genpaku held out his hand.
”Ye lord! Mask of flesh and bone, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws. Hadou #33, Soukatsui!”
The blue blast of energy ripped through the charging demons, dealing with most of them because of the narrow corridor. However, more crawled over the walls and rushed down the corridor. Genpaku was winded now from the fighting, but brought his blade up all the same.
”Fall back to the bunker; I’ll catch up!” he called back to his allies and shot forward towards the oncoming horde. He took out the first demon with a slash of Raiden, and then he launched a blade of electricity towards the oncoming ground. The first in that group took the blow, stopping as the electricity coursed over it. The rest rushed past it and continued to push towards Gen, blood on their minds and a meal in sight. He took up his stance, gritted his teeth, and prepared for the worst.
Then the world vanished away again. He blinked as the old arena came into view. This was so not the time for an impromptu talk with Raiden and he glared as he looked for the Zanpaku-tou spirit. However, he found himself standing alone within the arena’s walls.
”Raiden! What’s going on here!? I don’t have time for this!” he called out to the empty arena.
”You’re so worried about your friends; that’s cute actually, and admirable,” [i]came a feminine voice. Genpaku blinked, and spun around, looking for the source of the voice. A gentle breeze floated about him.
”Who are you? Where are you?” Genpaku called out again.
”Silly; I’m part of your soul. And I’m right behind you.” came the voice again.
Genpaku turned back around, and came face to face with a young woman. She stood just shy of his height, with gentle features. Her hair, the color of brown gold, hung down past her waist. She was dressed in simple, modern dress, and for the moment her eyes were closed as she stood there, smiling at him. He blinked a couple times, surprised by the sudden appearance of who he could only assume was the spirit of his Zanpaku-tou and his own Shinigami powers. She opened her emerald eyes to take him in a moment before looking up at the storm that still hung above the arena.
”You seems to be having a lot of trouble out there keeping those demons off you and your friends,” she said as she turned back to look at him. He felt almost ashamed under her gaze and looked away.
”I can help you, if you want,” she said. He looked back at her and she smiled again, closing her eyes as she did so.
”Of course I do,” he started to say, but she held up her hand to stop him a moment.
”First, you must answer me a question. Raiden once asked you what you fought for, and you said you fought for yourself. Raiden has helped you fight to protect you since then. However, what do you fight for now though?” she asked, and opened her eyes, tilting her head as she waited for the answer.
He blinked, and had to think about it for a moment. Above, lightning flashed and thunder cracked; Raiden was being impatient maybe? He sighed and looked back at the Zanpaku-tou spirit before him.
”I fight for those I call friends; for those in my division and thus under me. My power is useless if I am dead, buts its also useless if it can’t be used for anyone else,” he said simply. The Zanpaku-tou spirit stood there, silent for a moment.
”And that, Genpaku-chan, is why I feel sorry for you. You’re far to carrying about those around you compared to the world you’ve been pushed into, and the fighting you will have to do. Then again, maybe it is that situation that pushes you onward. I will give you back your strength, for I like Raiden am nothing more than a part of you. Call on me when you will, my name is…”
And he was back in Soul Society as the demons closed on him. Raiden glowed and returned to its sealed form. However, Genpaku suddenly felt a block, and shunpo’d back and away as the demons converged on the spot he had been in. He couldn’t release the second blade yet; there was a block between the two blades. Well, that told him something important; he was incapable of releasing both blades simultaneously for now. He doubted he could handle the stress of both releases anyway. He sheathed Raiden and drew the second blade as he fired off a byakurai at an oncoming demon. He dispatched another pair of demons with the sealed blade before the rest charged him. He reached for that power of his, and found it this time.
”Howl through the world, Fujin!” he called out, and the blade shattered.
The wind in the area suddenly kicked up, and within moments a blade of wind had materialized in place of where the actual blade had been. Genpaku slashed with the blade at an oncoming attack from a nearby demon, and discovered the back drawn to his weapon; the clawed hand flew right through the blade and left a deep gash in his right shoulder. However, the demon fell over, its whole right side scoured with slices. Genpaku shunpo’d back once more, and lashed out with the blade, releasing a blade of holding winds that cut through several of the demons. Using Fujin, he managed to push the demons far enough back that he could make an exit safely and return to the bunk. His wounds were saw too once more as he contemplated his new weapon.
”Remember Genpaku, Raiden and myself are nothing more than an extension of your own power. Use it to protect those precious to you, and to protect youself.”
The Calm...
- Spoiler:
It had taken Genpaku nearly a hundred years to grasp the names of his Zanpaku-tous; and that was him moving fast. After the Ender invasion was finally repelled, and the chaos that followed it with the war on the Soul King and formation of multiple organizations, Genpaku had been kept on his toes. However, they then entered the era of low distress, the era that had multiple different names. Genpaku didn’t take this time of peace for granted, however. He used the era of peace to forge forward on his training. All of the encounters and events thus far had jump started his training, and now he took that and ran with it. Throughout his battles thus far he had lost friends, and while he knew to a degree that it wasn’t his fault he believed that he could have done something about it if he had gained more power. This became a driving force behind Genpaku’s motivation.
He trained relentlessly throughout the times of peace, seeking the next level of power he could attain. He began his search for Bankai with his blades. In his mind, that was the next logical step. Halfway through the era of peace, Genpaku rose to the rank of Vice Captain, and while thankful for the promotion it did nothing to slow his attempts at progress. This was around when a talented Shinigami by the name of Solas Foiche stepped up to take the place of the third seat of the division. He would train with her from time to time; eventually the two would develop a friendship of sorts, though Gen was basically a friend to any and everyone. He became known for his excessive training and cheery attitude; many outright stated that he wasn’t a fighter based solely on his attitude. His skills argued otherwise.

...and The Storm
Loss and the Test of the Maelstrom
Founding of the Special Human Task Force
P E R S O N A L I T Y
Personality:
Motivated
Genpaku is an extremely motivated individual; when he sets a goal he will do everything he possibly can to reach that goal. He is never satisfied with where he stands now; he knows that he is nowhere near as strong as he could be, and pushes forward to try and attain whatever the next plateau of power is for him. Genpaku’s motivation can be triggered by the strangest of things, and it has carried him forward for many years now to continue striving and attain what he’s capable of.
Compassionate
Genpaku does not like to see others in pain, and will make himself the butt of a joke to make someone feel better. He sought power for the sake of others so that they would not have to experience loss, but he knows that was a foolish goal. He simply isn’t capable of being everywhere at once and of stopping everything. So instead, he tries to comfort those in pain with whatever words or actions he can. By the same token, Genpaku will stuff down his own sorrow and self-doubt when they rear up to keep others from seeing it and being brought down. However, he still has events that have taken place that he blames himself for, and from time to time they catch him and force him to take check of his emotions once more.
Fierce
Genpaku has a fierce personality, and once he’s decided on something he will go for it with all of his might. In battle, his focus and determination are a remarkable thing to see, and he will not hesitate to unleash the full might of his power in battle if the situation calls for it. He will relentlessly push the offensive given the chance, both on the battlefield and in normal life. Genpaku also possess a violent temper, despite his best efforts to control it. If provoked the right way, this temper can get the better of him, though it really is a bad idea to do that.
Open-Minded
As demonstrated by his open-door policy in the Special Human Task Force, Genpaku is extremely forward thinking and open-minded to most suggestions. He values the opinions and viewpoints that others can bring that he may not see or take into consideration.
Intelligent
Behind Genpaku’s joking temperament and fierce nature lies an impressive intelligence. Genpaku has always been a quick learner, and coupled with his motivation it leads to him picking up many things quickly. He is also able to dissect battle strategies and such given a few moments thought. He downplays this though, mostly because it doesn’t seem necessary to have everyone know that he’s smart. He prefers to joking most of the time.
Laid Back
Genpaku, either while relaxing or training, is a laid back individual while not in actual combat. He liked to be around people, to joke and have a good time, and to general bring the mood in a room up, especially during these trying times. He prefers to take things one step at a time when he can, to sort them out and easily deal with them.
__________________________________________________________________________
Zanpaku-tou Inner World
Both Zanpaku-tous share the same inner world for Genpaku.
Zanpaku-tou Limits
It is worth noting that while Genpaku is capable of releasing both of his blades to Shikai simultaneously, he is incapable of releasing one to Shikai if the other is in a bankai state. He is also, obviously, not able to release both to Shikai simultaneously.
Fujin
Raiden
A B I L I T I E S
Hakuda
Genpaku prefers to stick to Hakuda when training with other allies or even when he gets into a real fight, wishing to save his Zanpaku-tous as more of a last resort. He began his training while he was still living and has continued to hone his skills since his death. He is known to purify hollows using unarmed strikes rather than his zanpaku-tous.
Zanjutsu
Though he prefers to avoid using his Zanpaku-tous if he can, he has undergone extensive training with his blades and is no slouch when it comes to Zanjutsu.
Hohou
If there is anything Genpaku has worked on the most, however, it is his HoHou skills. He sees mobility as a key factor in a fight, and has trained relentlessly to further his knowledge and skill in HoHou.
Kidou
Easily Genpaku's weakest area in terms of the four basic Shinigami combat styles, though he has put extensive work to try and compensate for this.

...and The Storm
- Spoiler:
As the reign of the peaceful era drew unknowingly to a close, Genpaku began to gain the first understandings of one of his Bankais. Once more, it was Raiden that was discovered first. Genpaku had discovered a training space removed from Seireitei where he could concentrate in peace, and he took advantage of the space to meditate on his Zanpaku-tous to attempt to discover his Bankais. He had found a large, deep gorge and had used kidou to clear the bottom and make it more or less smooth, though there was gradual rises and falls throughout the run. Genpaku stood, Raiden drawn with his eyes closed as he willed the Zanpaku-tou spirit from the sword for his training. However, something felt different this time. When he opened his eyes, Raiden stood ahead of him, his blade drawn. About the man was a strange pressure, unlike anything Genpaku had felt from the spirit before. The sky above them began to blacken, and Genpaku looked up at it for a moment.
”Who said you had time to look away, Genpaku!” [i]Raiden cried out, and as Gen looked back Raiden was upon him, blade already mid swing. Genpaku used shunpo, flying backwards to avoid the strike. A gash appeared on his chest all the same, shallow but there. Raiden was upon him once more, and Gen barely managed to bring his blade up to block the strike.
”You’ve become arrogant Genpaku. You seek bankai with only this measly power? You think yourself worthy of you ancestor’s strength simply by virtue of wanting it?” Raiden yelled, and suddenly kicked Genpaku in the chest, sending him flying backwards along the ground.
Then the bolt struck. Electricity coursed through Genpaku’s body as the bolt from above collided with him. He felt pain as the energy coursed through his body on its way to the ground. He was left standing, smoldering from the blow for only a few moments before he tipped forward. Raiden watched with a look of disappointment as Genpaku slowly fell forward; until Genpaku shot forward and lashed out with his blade. Raiden stopped the blade halfway through the slash, though it had managed to catch him along the chest for the first half the swing. Genpaku felt the effects of his Shikai wearing on him already; Sawaru had gripped him from the lightning’s strike. He felt a power rising up around him, and he willed himself to move; he barely managed to move from the spot before the second bolt landed.
Genpaku let out several haggard breaths as he looked at Raiden and then at the storm above. The power coursing through him…he wasn’t keen on reliving that experience. The fact that he had managed to remain standing after that surprised even him, though he didn’t take the time to recognize it more than that.
”You managed to remain conscious through that blow; not bad. However, that’s still not enough. If this is all the power you can muster…”
Raiden gave a sweeping gesture with his hand, and a barrier suddenly rose up around them. Genpaku felt a snap within Raiden. He looked down at the blade a moment before looking back at the spirit.
”If you wish to attain Bankai, you will have to do it on your own,” Raiden said, looking the Shinigami in the eye.
”That’s not fucking fair! How the hell am I-“ Genpaku began to say.
”Since when has anything in your life been fair Genpaku Arishima? Since the day you first took hold of me the battle has been pitted against you. Why should I treat you any different? Because I am your power? I will not do so; it will only weaken you. You have already come to rely on me too much for you goal.”
Genpaku wanted to retort, but he couldn’t think of a good reason. He bit back his arguments and stared down the zanpaku-tou spirit while he worked out what to do. The storm above growled, and lightning snaked across the clouds. With the barrier up, he couldn’t move for cover. The area was flat, so there was nothing to redirect the bolts too. Raiden turned and started walking towards Gen. He held up his blade as he ran through his options in his head. Then he made a decision.
”Bakudo #26; Kyokko!”
With that, Genpaku vanished from sight. Raiden blinked, not having suspected Genpaku of using a tactic like that to stall for time. The area fell silent save for the storm above, waiting. Raiden looked around him, watching for a sign to tell him where the Shinigami had gone. He heard something, a low mumble, and turned towards where the sound came from.
"Carriage of Thunder. Bridge of a spinning wheel. With light, divide this into six. Bakudo #61, Rikujoukourou." Raiden heard the end of the incantation too late as the six rods of light slammed into his body. With the completion of the incantation Genpaku was revealed, his hand outstretched towards Raiden.
”Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south! Hado #31, Shakahou!"
The blast of fire shot forth, and slammed into Raiden location, obscuring the man in dust. However, before Genpaku could move he felt the rise in power around him, and another bolt of lightning slammed into him. He was ready this time, as he hand hit the ground; the lightning surged into him, through his body, and down his arms and legs into the ground. He had taken his sandles off before he launched his attack, expecting the counter from the storm. He gritted his teeth; while he had expected it, it didn’t change the fact that it hurt. He had an advantage now, however, and he sought to push it. His hand came up and wrapped around his Zanpaku-tou as he shot forward. The dust was knocked away as Raiden was revealed, an arm leveled towards Genpaku.
”Byakurai."
The bolt shot out at Genpaku; Gen’s response was to fling his Zanpaku-tou at Raiden’s kidou and the man as he pressed forward.
” "Ye lord! Mask of flesh and bone, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws."
Genpaku vanished from sight as a bolt of lightning crashed down in his path. He shunpo’d forward, and landed just behind Raiden. He put his hands on the Zanpaku-tou spirit’s back.
”Hadou #33, Soukatsui!” he called as he unleashed the blast at point blank range. However, as he did he felt a force on his arm, and it was pushed to the side as the blast exploded just to the right of Raiden.
Genpaku dropped to the ground, his breath ragged as he glared up at Raiden. The Zanpaku-tou spirit looked him in the eye as he knelt there.
”You lack the strength to defeat me,” he said, and Genpaku was about to retort when he held up a hand.
”You lack the strength, but not the resolve, not the will. Rest for now. I have a test for you when you are ready.” Genpaku raised an eyebrow at Raiden, but didn’t argue. He sat down and held a hand over the worst of his wounds as it began to glow a green color. Raiden walked slowly away from Genpaku before turning to face him; and there he waited.
After several minutes, Genpaku rose once more.
”Let us pit your will against mine, Genpaku. I’ve allowed you control of the storm that rages above us; you must strike me with it, if you can,” Raiden called out. Gen looked up at the storm a moment before looking back at Raiden, who was slowly drawing his blade again.
You must reach out with that will of yours, and take hold of the storm. But it will not relent so easily; you will have to force it. If you can do that, I will reveal to you the secrets that you crave.”
Genpaku wasted no words as he reached out towards the storm with his reiatsu and will, a green aura surrounding him as he did. Raiden drew his blade back, and then shot towards the Shinigami. Genpaku felt the resistance as soon as he started; something pushed back at him, as though not willing to let him have the storm. He was this close though; he would not back down now. He willed the storm above him to bend to his will, to obey him. Then he moved, as Raiden brought down his blade with enough force to cause a small explosion.
And that was when Genpaku got it. It simply clicked in his mind, and he looked away from Raiden at the storm once more.
”You’ve no time to look elsewhere!” Raiden called, and charged Genpaku again. Then the bolt slammed into the Zanpaku-tou spirit, sending debris flying with the force. Raiden emerged from the dust, and he didn’t look even scathed by the strike despite the direct hit. Genpaku looked back at him with an irritated smirk.
”You’re a dirty liar, Raiden. You didn’t allow me control of the storm so that you could tell me what my Bankai was; the storm is your bankai.”
Raiden smirked at the accusation.
”So you were able to figure that much out, eh? You’re learning, Genpaku. You’ve found what you’ve sought; what will you do now?”
Gen smirked at this as he allowed himself to collapse back down to a sitting position.
”What does this change, Raiden? I will continue to seek strength. This is only the first step in a new road, is it not? I feel it in my bones…this era of peace will not last much longer. They never do. And when things begin once more, I will be ready to do my part.”
Raiden chuckled at that, and the barrier slowly faded away, along with the storm. Raiden himself began to face back into the Zanpaku-tou and Genpaku stood once more. He heard a soft laugh somewhere, and turn to look for Fujin. She, however, was nowhere to be seen. He made his way back to Seireitei.
Loss and the Test of the Maelstrom
- Spoiler:
As Genpaku had predicted, the calm era shattered with a sudden rise in hollow, demon, and Arrancar activity. During this time, he found himself on more patrols than ever, along with every other member of the division and the Gotei 13, as attacks happened on a nearly daily basis, sometimes with invasions of creatures to the human world hungering for souls. There was little rest during this time; it was almost as if they were fighting a war again. Genpaku saw it as a chance to train even harder, and he didn’t hide the tools he had at his disposal. Directly after attaining bankai, he had gone to his captain and informed him of the news, and sought training and help from someone more experienced. He was cautioned against using it in actual combat because of how hard a bankai was to wield. He trained with it far removed from Seireitei, sometimes under the guidance of his captain, and sometimes on his own. Slowly, he was gaining a feel for how Raiden’s bankai moved and flowed, and he worked out in his mind what the strengths and weaknesses of it were.
It was during this time as well when Genpaku would be given a promotion he had neither been seeking nor wanted at first. A large scale invasion of hollows and demons sprang up near the capitol city of Paris, France. The 8th Division was called out to help deal with it, and when they arrived they found the country side swarming with enemies. His captain joined the fray, along with several other seated members as they began to dispatch the creatures. At first, none of the creatures seemed all that powerful. Most were dispatched without the release of a blade, and scores were annihilated with a well placed Kidou. Overall, this was looking too turn out better than he had hoped.
That changed when a strong Reiatsu hit the area as the leader of this apparent invasion, an arrancar, took center stage. Immediately, it launched after the captain. Genpaku wished to go aid him, however the other hollows had begun to push back on the Shinigami that had gathered, slowly pushing them away from the Arrancar and captain. They lunged and hungered for their share of the spiritual power that was theirs for the taking. He directed the shinigami who were still fighting, calling out to them with orders on how to push the creatures back. Finally, several division members released their Zanpaku-tous and the swarm was pushed back.
Genpaku rushed forward to help his Captain, but only succeeded in arriving in time to see the Arrancar deliver the final blow, beheading the former 8th Division Captain. Rage filled Genpaku at the sight; several other division member arrived and grabbed him, trying to pull him back as Shinigami from other Division began to appear. Their calls for retreat fell on deaf ears. Suddenly Genapku’s reiatsu spiked as he separated himself from his other division members. Without calling or waiting for approval, he released the gentei kaijo.
”Bankai!” Genpaku called out, and the sky suddenly turned black as thunder rolled into the area. The Arrancar turned back to look at Genpaku.
A bolt slammed into the area where the Arrancar had been, leaving a crater. However, the crack of Sonido signaled the arrival of the Arrancar behind Genpaku, and it nearly slammed him with a hammer fist strike. Genpaku lashed out with his blade, which collided with the creature skin but failed to cut. Genpaku felt a fist slam into his gut as the Arrancar landed his blow, sending Gen rocketing down towards the ground. However, a bolt of lightning found its mark as the shinigami flew away, slamming into the Arrancar without as much of an effect as Gen had hoped for. He collided with the ground shortly after that. He lay there a moment before pushing himself back up.
A hand flew out to stop him from continuing, as another Captain arrived on the scene. A second captain had appeared, and already engaged the Arrancar in battle. Genpaku was ordered to seal away his bankai, and though he argued he was forced to do so in the end. The Arrancar was dispatched by the other captain, and Genpaku was forced to return and inform those division members that had not been there to witness the event of the death of their Captain. Genpaku blamed himself, partially, for the death of their captain; a stupid thought and many people, including his Zanpaku-tous, reminded him of such. However, the thought had the opposite effect of what one might assume. Genpaku’s motivation skyrocketed from his failure. He resolved that he would grown stronger so that he wouldn’t allow something like this to happen again.
Before he could set out to do this, however, an interesting event happened; Genpaku was promoted to Captain of the 8th Division. He didn’t quite agree with it, but he had demonstrated the ability to lead and that he possessed Bankai. On such short notice, he was the perfect candidate. He took it without much argument; the Captain’s haori hung heavy on him, and he felt it was a reminder that he needed to get stronger so that the weight wasn’t as noticeable. With his resolve set, he knew where he would begin that journey.
He ventured back out to the gorge that was his training area, and set up a barrier of his own. He drew Raiden from her sheathe, and focused on drawing her into the world. It didn’t take long before the woman was standing before him, and he looked at her with determined eyes.
”I’m sure you know why I’ve brought you here, Fujin.” he said. She gave a small nod.
”You seek the secrets of Bankai. You wish to draw out the strength you feel is yet untapped,” she responded. He nodded to her.
And she was before him, her extended hand stretched out and pointed at his neck. For a moment, just a moment, Genpaku stood still, shocked at what he had felt in that instant from Fujin; he had felt the intent to kill. Fujin looked kind and docile, even peaceful. However, hidden in that slender frame of hers was speed and power unlike anything Genpaku would have guessed at.
”We’ll begin with a light spar then, to get you awake and ready. However, if you don’t take this seriously, Genpaku, I’ll make sure you return to Seireitei with a wound to show your foolishness,” she said, and the light voice and carefree tone were gone, replaced with chill of the winter wind.
She struck out at Genpaku then, a roundhouse kick to his right. He brought up a hand to block, and was shoved to the left by the impact and force behind the blow. Behind Fujin’s attack was the force of the wind around them. She pressed forward, striking out at him with a flurry of Hakuda strikes. On top of that, her hohou capabilities far exceeded his own. Genpaku was pushed on the defensive from start to finish in their “light spar” and he learned the lesson of “don’t judge a book by its cover” from her in quickly. Fujin demonstrated everything he wanted his Hakuda and Hohou to be, and he noted that if he wished to train those things he would have to spar with her more often.
Shortly, the spar was brought to an end as Fujin slipped out of her stance and smiled at Genpaku.
”Now, onto what you came here for Genpaku. Before, I came to you when you required the power to defend those around you nearly two hundred years ago. Now you’ve sought me out for the same purpose. And so, I will give you a task that you must complete,” she said as she gracefully stepped, walking with her hand on her chin as though in thought. She turned to look at him.
”Very well. I don’t care what it is I have to do then; I’l-“
”Kill yourself.”
Genpaku blinked at her as she stood there, her face showing no sign of joking. Silence hung between them for a few moments.
”Do not say you will do anything unless you are prepared for the worst possible situation, Genpaku. You’ve taken up the haori of a Captain now; you have a duty to hold true to your word. You mustn’t forget that, ever,” she said, and she looked at him with such intense eyes that he was forced to look away. Really, being chastised by his own Zanpaku-tou…
There was a sudden pressure in the area, and as Genpaku looked back at Fujin she stood there in a completely new appearance; her body was covered in bright emerald armor, a pair of wings having sprouted from her back. She held up a hand at him.
”Winds of the North become my blade. Winds of the South become my shield. Winds of the East become my armor, winds of the West become my Steed. Winds of Heaven become my soul, Winds of Earth become my body, Winds of Hell become my instinct.”
Four emerald pillars, one in each of the cardinal directions, slammed into the ground creating a square, with Genpaku at the center. He didn’t have time to move before the incantation was completed, and the seal on the pillars closed, a barely visible barrier of wind connecting all of the pillars.
Then Genpaku was ripped from the ground, as the box became a tempest of changing air currents. He was sent flying in every direction, sometimes slamming into one of the walls of wind just to be ripped from it and flung back around the box. Fujin’s voice rang out, as clear as any before, suddenly.
”I’m sorry, Genpaku. But you wish to know what you are capable of. The easiest way to do that is a trial by fire. Take control of that maelstrom you find yourself within in the next 24 hours. If you don’t, I will kill you.”
That threat sounded strange, coming from Fujin. However, Genpaku knew that she’d do it; her tone held to tremble or give to suggest a lie. He caught, just for a moment, sight of her as she stood in that armor near a rock. Sitting next to her was Raiden, watching the event for himself.
The two Zanpaku-tous sat in silence as the time passed by. Slowly, the night closed in around them, and turned back into day, and the time limit approached.
”Time is almost up,” Raiden said, breaking the silence between the pair.
”Indeed,” responded Fujin.
”Then again, you did present him with an impossible task, Fujin,” Raiden said, watching as Genpaku continued to fly about the box.
”No more than you did, and not as impossible as you think. Look; he hasn’t impacted with one of the walls for hours now,” Fujin said. Raiden gave a look, and nodded silently.
”But it’s not enough; and time is up.”
Raiden looked over at Fujin as the emerald armor sudden cracked and began to glow, fissured of emerald light coursing through the armor. Raiden was on his feet in a moment.
”Hold it Fujin! If you do that he really will die!” Raiden cautioned, and stepped forward; the wind kicked up and pushed him back.
”I know, but I keep my word,” Fujin said, and the armor suddenly shattered, the pieces floating about before shooting forward and piercing the box, being caught by the maelstrom of winds. They followed the erratic wind currents and Genpaku didn’t have to be told what was going to happen if they stayed like that long: already several pieces were slashing him as they passed within a few feet of him, and he could tell that a direct hit would most likely rend his body asunder. He reached out with his senses, grasping at the feeling he had been feeling that allowed him to control the air in the first place. Then he found it: a feeling of familiarity. He grabbed onto it, and will the air around him to spin to his will. The wind responded, and the emerald shards followed suit, spinning and creating an emerald tornado around him as he pulled all of the wind in the box under his control. Then he forced all of that power behind the shards, and the shards into the pillars. The shards impacted with the pillars, and they stood there a moment more before they shattered. The barrier vanished, and Genpaku was left there, hovering in mid air at the center of a maelstrom of wind and power. Slowly, he floated downwards and landed on the ground with an accomplished smile on his face. He took a breath before he fell forward, all but feinting on the spot. Something caught him, and Fujin’s voice filled his ears as he drifted into unconsciousness.
”Well done, Genpaku. I think you’ve earned a small rest.”
Raiden walked up behind her, looking at the unconscious Shinigami a moment before looking back at Fujin.
”You knew all along he’d be able to do that, didn’t you?” he asked.
”Not really. However, I did know that he wouldn’t be able to do it unless his life was put on the line. That is just the way it works with him. Either his life, or that of the people he cares for. You know that as well as I do, after all. I just used that to my advantage.”
Raiden blinked several times at her before giving a sigh.
”Sometimes Fujin, you scare even me,” he commented before both spirits faded away back into their blades.
Genpaku remained unconscious for several hours after that. When he awoke, he collected his things and returned to Seireitei to get his wounds properly treated as he worked out what the next step was; mastering his Bankais. He had done a great deal of work with Raiden already, but he was far from mastering it at that point. He had just learned Fujin’s bankai, and it would take years to master that as well. But he would put in that time, so that no one else he knew and cared about would die on his watch. That was what moved him to train as hard as he did, and he was not about to stop where he was.
Founding of the Special Human Task Force
- Spoiler:
Genpaku continued his training, pushing himself far beyond what was probably safe for him to do. He sought the mastery of his zanpaku-tous, and therein the mastery of himself and his own capabilities for the sake of those that he led and for those that the Shinigami protected. A new ruler stepped forward within the dimension of the Hollows, Hueco Mundo, and the attacks increased. Soul Society was forced to join forces with several other organizations that sought to rid the worlds of the Hollows or simply to protect the human world. Genpaku did all he could to help with these things and that goal, but it was not easy work; no one ever said it would be. Genpaku continued his leadership of the 8th Division as best he could, and trained with his division daily to keep their skills sharp and power strong. His friend, Solas, had grown to be his Vice captain, and had grown incredibly strong as well.
It wasn’t hard to figure out that she had attained bankai, and he offered to help train her with it. Slowly though, his thoughts were brought back to the problems Seireitei was having with the human world. He brainstormed up a solution, and brought it before the Captain Commander during a meeting. Genpaku proposed the creation of a new Division within the Gotei 13, a division that would be located on Earth and act as the first line between the worlds and as a mediator between the human world, its allies, and Seireitei. Of course, Genpaku offered to head this division, and named Solas Foiche as his successor for the captaincy of the 8th Division. That was 100 years ago. Since then, Genpaku has led the Special Human Task Force as its Captain, fulfilling his duties to the best of his capabilities. He maintained his rigorous training schedules, and sought out sparring matches with any Shinigami or ally he could find.
Genpaku has also attempted to move to defend against the new challenges that faced him and his SHTF, as arrancar and hollows, demons, and other such creatures found ways into the domed cities and launched attacks on civilians. He worked to set up stations that functioned similar to the 12th Divisions detection system used to find hollows and Arrancars for years already, and placed them in the different cities, creating command centers where those in the SHTF could receive information from and such. He opened the doors to the task force to any and all willing and able to join; in a war against creatures like the hollows, demons and so on no ally was too good or too low to be accepted. That was Genpaku’s stance, and he was in full control of the SPTF, so his words went.
Fujin
- Spoiler:
Zanpaku-tou Spirit Name:
Fujin
Zanpaku-tou Spirit Appearance:
Sealed Zanpaku-tou:
Release:
"Howl through the worlds, Fujin!"
Shikai Description:
(most likely a temporary picture)
Shikai Abilities:
Kazedanpen(Shredding Winds)
When Fujin is released to Shikai, the blade shatters and is replaced by a blade make of high density, high velocity wind that shreds instead of cuts. The blade in incapable of blocking material objects such as blades, but is also incapable of being blocked by such objects. However, if it comes in contact with flesh or a similar substance, the result is the scouring and shredding of the surface as the twisting razor winds scar said surface. Depending on the direction of the swing and the surface it hits, the 'blade' is capable of removing limbs. Hits to the chest will leave deep gashes that may destroy bones or sever organs, depending of course on defenses and so on.
Kaitsudanpen(Shredding Pressure)
Fujin's blade is not as fixed as it seems to be. The blade itself is made up of the razor winds that spin at cyclonic speeds in a confined area, while the area immediately around said blade is whipped about, Fujin's influence seeping out into the air around the blade. This effectively means that the air directly around the blade can cut as well. However, the damage isn't as severe as a direct hit from the 'blade'; it will still leave gashes along the surface however.
AoriShini(Reaping Gust)
With an investment of reiatsu, Genpaku can release a burst of scything winds in a direction. The attack is a cone in front of Genpaku, extending outwards up to 40 feet. The attack appears as a field of moving wind blades that slice and dice most things caught in the attack. After extending the 40 feet the air pressure decreases, no longer capable of cutting but possibly able to force enemies back. All effects of the attack dissipate after 60 feet.
Kirukaze(Air Cutter)
Similar to Reaping Gust, except concentrated into a single blade of air. With a swing of the 'blade' a blade of high pressure air flies forth in the direction of the swing; this attack is capable of cutting through buildings and multiple enemies if they do not get out of the way. The air immediately around the blade and extending out 3 feet from both sides of the attack is focused into a high pressure ridge that can push enemies away. The attack dissipates in much the same way as Reaping Gust.
Tokuteikiatsu(Cyclone Shield)
By holding Fujin point down and channeling Reiatsu into her, Genpaku is capable of creating a spinning barrier of spiritual energy and wind around himself and those near him. The shield acts as a semi-sphere if he is on the ground or a sphere is he is in the air, and has a maximum diameter of 15 feet. This shield is capable of deflecting projectile based attacks if it is kept below a diameter of 9 feet. Beyond that threshold, the projectile attacks are only thrown off course slightly. This is all based on the power of the enemy of course. The shield is not solid, but does act as Shredding Winds detailed above. For the duration of the ability, Genpaku is unable to use any of Fujin's other abilities, and must continue to channel energy into the blade. In addition, the enclosed area has minimal oxygen as most of it is being drained out to the shield, so prolonged use does not typically happen.
IttaiHeki(Burst Zone)
A seldom used ability at best, this move does not damage to enemies caught in it. Genpaku draws energy into Fujin, then releases both the blade and Shikai, the result being a literal explosion of air pressure. This explosion pushes most anything away from Genpaku that is not an ally of his to a distance of 40 feet away. However, this returns Fujin to her sealed state, and limits her release to either Shikai or Bankai for 2 posts.
Bankai Name:
Gekidou Fujin (Raging God of Wind)
Bankai Description:
Bankai Abilities:
Fujin(God of Wind)
As the name implies, Genpaku gain complete control of the winds directly around him that is readily useable up to a 10 foot radius. He is able to infuse that wind with Reiatsu and form different objects or shapes. He is capable of recreating any of his Shikai abilities because of this, and those abilities are amplified
Enhanced Durability and Strength
Gekidou Fujin's appearance as emerald armor is not for show; once released to Bankai Genpaku's Durability increases against all forms of attack as the armor is enhanced with spiritual power as well as the physical armor itself. Genpaku's strength also is amplified by roughly 1.5 times in this state.
Flight/Speed Increase
The wings on the back of Gekidou Fujin are not simply for decoration; in a place where flight would not normally be possible Genpaku is capable of using them to keep himself aloft. In addition, the wings manipulate the air around Genpaku, reducing drag and air resistance to increase his overall speed both on the ground and in the air by a substantial margin, making his one of the faster Captains.
Kazefumu(step On Wind)
While using a Hoho technique such as Shunpo, Genpaku's body can literally becomes wind for the duration of the movement. He is insubstantial during the movement, becoming solid once he has reached his destination. If he is scattered during this motion (by another wind controller), he instantly solidifies once more in place and ceases movement.
Reiatsu no Arashi (Spiritual Pressure of the Tempest)
In Fujin's Bankai state, Genpaku gains an aura that covers the area serving to aid allies and hinder enemies. In this form Genpaku's reiatsu rushes around in the aura, which extends up to 60 feet, assaulting enemies with air pressure which serves only to slow enemy movement down. Weaker enemies may actually become immobilized by this ability depending on thier strength. Genpaku's allies gain a benefit from this aura as they are propelled by the aura, this speed increased by roughly 1.5 times.
Raiden
- Spoiler:
Zanpakutô Spirit Name:
Raiden (Thunder and Lightning)
Zanpaku-tou Spirit Appearance:
Raiden is a tall man, standing over six and a half feet tall. He is broad shouldered with dark brown hair fall about his head haphazardly. He wears the uniform of a Shinigami Captain, though the divisional insignia on the back is left blank. He wears a sword at his side that is nothing more than that; a sword. He has piercing yellow eyes as well.
Sealed Zanpakutô : (what does the sword look like when its not released?)
Release:
"Pierce the night! Raiden!"
Shikai Description:
Shikai Abilities:
Sekkai(Untimely Interference)
Once released, Raiden gains the ability to alter the reaction time of enemies it cuts. It must break the skin for this effect to come into play. The first time a successful cut is landed on an enemy, they're reaction time is dragged down to the average human reaction time(.215seconds). After that, each successive cut increases the reaction time by 1.25times, capping out at 1.6secons maximum. There are several ways for this effect to be negated or abolished; a substantial increase in power(such as with a release to a different stage), not being struck by Raiden for several minutes. or if Raiden is returned to its sealed state. Not being struck by Raiden for 3 posts reduces the effect by one stage. Stages are marked below.
Hiraishin(Lightning Rod)
Raiden coats itself in electricity to amplify the damage of its strikes and to amplify the effects of Sekkai. While this is active, the rate at which Sekkai stacks its ability increases to 1.5 times per hit. In addition, enemies wearing metal based armor draw electrical tendrils from Raiden as it passes. This do only light damage and do not apply a stack of Sekkai. This ability remains active for as long as Genpaku decides to channel reiatsu into it, though leaving it active too long can become costly on his reiatsu reserves.
Denko(Lightning)
A projectile attack where Raiden releases a pulse or wave of reiatsu enhanced electricity. Taking a direct hit from this attack deals electrical damage, burns the area it struck, and subjects the primary target(or first target to be hit) to Sekkai as though Hiraishin was active. The effective range of this attack is up to 100 feet before the energy dissipates. Depending on its strength, a direct hit upon a hollow's mask may shatter it and cleanse it as though it was struck by the blade.
Banrai(Thunder)
Banrai can only be used after Denko has been utilized. A loud crash like thunder is released from Raiden; this sound wave is amplified by Genpaku's reiatsu and deals sonic damage to enemies within 20 feet of Genpaku. This attack ignores material barriers such as walls unless those objects are soundproof. In addition, the target may be thrown off balance by the attack due to equilibrium originating in the ears. The sound wave is capable of cracking or shattering hollow masks depending on the strength of the hollow.

Bankai Name:
Kyoumou Raiden(Fierce Thunder and Lightning)
Bankai Description:
Bankai Abilities:
Range:
Though Kyoumou Raiden blackens the visible sky, only a specific area of the clouds actually acts as Genpaku's bankai at any given time. This area is a half mile radius centered on Genpaku, which will move to follow him as he fights and moves about the battlefield.
Enhanced Speed/Reiatsu
Once Genpaku has released to Bankai, his speed increases substantially, though not quite to the degree he attains during Fujin's release. In addition, his spiritual pressure increases as is expected with a release to Bankai. In this state, his Reiatsu feels like the air during a summer storm.
Raiden(Thunder and Lightning)
Denko becomes Genpaku’s main attack once Raiden is released to Bankai, though the attack is now in the form of a lightning bolt fired from above. The bolts combine the effects of Denko and Banrai into a single attack at Genpaku's will. He is capable of unleashing several of these bolts at a time, each of which is easily quadrupled in power as compared to Denko in Shikai state. This attack can apply a stage of Sekkai as well, treated as though Hiraishin is active.
Men'Eki(Immunity)
In Bankai Genpaku attains an immunity to electrical based attacks as well as retaining immunity to Banrai.
Haiden(Distribution of Electricity)
Haiden is a technique that Raiden gains when it shifts into Bankai. By striking Genpaku with a bolt of lightning, Raiden gives the opposite effect of Sekkai by increasing the flow and speed of the impulses sent through the nerves. This increases Genpaku’s reaction time by a factor of 1.5. Unlike Sekkai, this ability cannot be stacked any higher than the initial application.
Soshi no Raikou(Element of Lightning)
Genpaku strikes himself with Raiden, infusing himself with electrical energy. By doing so, he can either channel Raiden's attack through himself to change the directions and angles the attack can come from, or attack with enhanced melee strikes. During this time, Genpaku's speed and reaction time are bolstered by an additional 1.5 times. However, this ability can only last 3 posts, after which Genpaku must wait 6 posts before using it again. Additionally, Genpaku drains himself of vasts amounts of energy during this time; activating the ability more than twice during any one fight is incredibly dangerous and could lead to him passing out, injury, or if he pushes too much even death.

Revamped Raiden and Fujin. This now needs re-evaluated.

- Spoiler:
- Spirits, ghost, demons, and monsters; these were the last things on the mind of the youth’s mind as he rushed down the dark streets as though a pack of rabid dogs was hot on heels. Night had closed in and brought with it a muffling layer of clouds and light fog as a storm brewed high above. The boy was five then in height with a slim but athletic build, was dressed in track clothes, and had a head of gray/silver hair; this was Genpaku Arishima, and he was running late. The weather was closing in, the fog distorting the streetlights down the way and making them seem like far off candles; beyond that the clouds seemed to stifle any sound other than his own footfalls against the damp pavement. He liked this kind of weather, and if it hadn’t been closing in on midnight he might have walked home, enjoyed the sight and the feeling, and been generally less anxious than he was. With that not being the case though he turned down an alleyway.
He would have preferred to skip this route as well if he had the time; there was a small gang of older boys who liked to use the alleyway as their handout spot. They also liked to harass him for several reasons; rival school, hair color, whatever they really felt like using as an excuse. Unfortunately he couldn’t put a stop to it either; he had been training in martial arts for the past 10 years, but his father was a pacifist. He was only allowed to continue his practice because of his mother, who had managed by some miracle to convince his father that the training would do some good. His father only needed one reason to pull him out though and he would; Genpaku had just been careful enough to, thus far, not give him that reason. Hopefully tonight would not be the night where he was forced too.
He rounded the corner of the alley that lead towards his home with the expectation of seeing several gang members sitting around smoking; he was instead greeted by the joyous sight of an empty alley. They must have found somewhere else to loaf about he decided, and continued his hurried pace down the alleyway, the sound of his footsteps echoing off the walls and covering a very different but important sound. He had missed something critical; high above, shoved into the wall were four bodies. They were lacerated along the chests with puncture wounds in various places. These bodies would remain for the rest of the night and into the early hours of the morning; they would be found by the police only then, and would be joined by a fifth.
Genpaku darted out of the alleyway and cleared the distance between its mouth and his doorstep in less than twelve seconds; his coach would have congratulated him on the sprint if he had been there to see it. Only here did he pause, breathing hard as he tried to reclaim his breath. He scanned the windows of his home and was not surprised to find them on; his mother, father, or both had stayed awake to wait for him. This was exactly what he had feared; he contemplated a moment on just sneaking through the back door and up to his room, but decided against it; he would have to deal with his father at one point or another, and it would be better to just get it over with. He took one more breath and opened the door.
Inside the house didn’t have the air of tension he expected; there was the sound of bustle from the kitchen that could only have been his mother working on either cleaning up the dinner he had missed or preparing something for tomorrow. Maybe his father had gotten a promotion or something that warranted a celebration?
”Gen, is that you?” his mother called from the kitchen.
”Yeah mom; I’m home.”
”Good; your father is in his study and would like to speak with you.”
He cringed slightly; this could be bad. ”Alright.”
He climbed the stairs and made a detour to his room to dump off the bag. He could see his brother’s door closed and a light coming from the study where his did retired to work on things. It was also usually where he called the boys in to scold them for something they had done wrong.
He knocked lightly on the door, hoping that just maybe his day wouldn’t he-
”That you Genpaku?”
Dammit. ”Yes father.”
”Come in here.”
He gave a sigh and pushed the door open. His father was sitting behind the mahogany table, the desk lamp throwing dim light out over the spacious office. He strode in, trying to catch a glimpse at what his father was currently working on. His father looked up and caught his eye first.
”There you are. How was your day?”
”It was good; we won the track meet. It was too bad you couldn’t make it out.”
Yeah, sorry about that. Had some office work that needed taken care of.”
Genpaku have a small shrug. It was understandable after all; his dad was a busy man.
”What kept you out so late?”
This was exactly what he had hoped to avoid in this conversation, but his dad was quicker at directing it. He gave up on the idea of lying; his dad always had a way of telling when he lied.
”Sensei held a small sparring tournament after class.”
Now he waited; his father never reacted favorably to news like this. It was bad enough he was learning it, but to utilize it even in a controlled circumstance like this usually brought about a negative reaction. He didn’t get grounded or anything like that, it was just usually a disappointed look which was worse than getting in trouble; the feeling of having disappointed a parent was always one of their greatest tools.
However, no disapproving look or comment came. There was simply silence for a few moments that hung in the air.
”I see. Well, we’re planning on going out to a picnic tomorrow so you should probably get some rest.”
Genpaku blinked, taken aback by this turn of events. He gave a nod to his father and pushed himself up and preparing to depart. Something caught his eye however, just behind his father. When he stopped to look though, there wasn’t anything there. Was he seeing things? His father looked up at him.
”Go on. Sleep.” he said in a more forceful tone.
It took him a second to begin moving; he was sure he saw something there just a moment ag-there it was again. He rubbed his eyes a moment before turning and leaving, trying to make sense of it without angering his father further.
Wait…his father was angry? He stopped at the doorway, looking back at his father a moment. In all the years that he had consciously known his father, he had been a man that rarely showed aggression or anger save for extreme circumstances. As he looked back, he saw it again; a strange blur that had previously been just behind his father. Previously because now that blur was rushing him.
Genpaku dived back and to the side towards his room and the stairs as the wall suddenly exploded. He rolled to a stop near the wall and looked back at the now destroyed section of wall; what he found instead of his father standing there, glaring at him.
”Hmm. It seems I missed.”
Though the voice issued from his father, it sounded nothing like him all at once.
”You’re quicker than I had guessed in confined spaces.”
The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end as the voice issued forth once more.
”Welp, no reason to keep the charade going, eh?”
Genpaku’s vision seemed to blur all at once, and his hand shot to his mouth to stop himself from vomiting; the coppery smell of blood assaulted him from every direction as he was greeted with the sight of his father no longer whole. His right arm looked to be falling off all together while there were deep gashes and puncture marks all over his front; his gut was cut open and his entrails were not where they were supposed to be.
Genpaku exploded from his spot, instinct taking over where his mind failed him; wherever he wanted to be it wasn’t near the sight. Something heavy slammed into his side, sending him spiraling towards the stairs and about halfway down them before he hit and rolled the rest of the way, landing in a heap at the bottom. Now dazed and confused, he looked towards the top of the stairs; the walls were shredded and splintered, dried blood decorated most every surface, and the corpse of his father fell in a heap. Behind it was the strange blur; it was the size of a car at least, though with his vision wobbling as bad as it was, he could be wrong. The sound of his mother cooking was no longer present; the only sound was the creak of wood as the blur moved forward down the stairs. Genpaku pushed himself back to his feet, regaining his senses just in time as the blur launched forward at incredible speed, slamming into the ground where he had just been. He felt something fly past him, and a hole suddenly appeared in the wall as part of the blur slammed into it.
He had dived out of the way of the first attack, and now he rolled back to his feet and charged one of the windows, lunging at and through it. He rolled along the grass outside, and found his feet again; he didn’t feel the cuts along his arms and shoulders from the glass thanks to the adrenaline; the only thing he felt was fear and the urge to get away from this house and the strange blur that seemed intent on going after him. He took off at a sprint, hurtling the fence of his yard and rushing down the street. Somewhere behind him the sound of wood splintering signaled that whatever the blur was, it had done away with the door of the house.
”You’re pretty fast, boy.” The same spine chilling voice as before cooed right in his ear. Then something hit him harder than he had ever been hit, and he had been hit by a car once when he was younger. He flew sideways from the impact at least twenty feet before his back impacted on the far wall of the alleyway he had ran through earlier.
His vision blurred from the impact, the far off lights appeared to dance in his vision, he felt something inside him crack, and his mind raced to catch up with the events; it didn’t succeed as something hard and heavy slammed into his front and pressed him into the wall with more force than before. This time something broke, and he was pretty sure those were ribs. The impact sent his vision on a whole new dance as he tried to move his arms to push whatever was holding him there away, but his arms had been pinned at his sides when that something crashed into him and began to crush him into the wall. The voice from earlier suddenly broke out into cackling there in his face as his vision slowly came back into focus; everything except whatever was holding him there that was. He could only make out the outline of the thing and its head, or at least the general shape of its head. It was white in coloration, and had two dark spots that he assumed were eyes. He stared them down in the only gesture of defiance he could muster while he tried to figure out what was going on.
The creature’s cackle fell to a low chuckle as it looked back at him.
”You can see me, can’t you human?”
Genpaku remained silent, more out of fear than defiance. There was another snap as the creature applied more pressure and more ribs snapped; he strangled sound of pain.
”Oh, don’t hold back on my account. Let it all out,” the thing said, and part of the blur rose up; then it crashed down and something pierced his right shoulder and dove deep. This time he let out a yell of agony; he felt something warm wash over his chest under his shirt and tasted something coppery in his mouth. The scream was accompanied by another cackle from the creature and a second something piercing him, this time from the left side and in his stomach region. This time the sound of liquid hitting pavement sounded loud and clear in the desolate alley. Genpaku’s screams died down, unheard by the world.
Slowly the thing brutalizing him became more apparent to Genpaku; the bug-like appearance wasn’t far off as the creature was a giant centipede that had appendages like sickles for its front arms. It raised one of them up.
“A little more seasoning, and you’ll be ready to ea-AHHHHHHHH“
The sickle-like appendage hit the floor as something flashed; Genpaku was sent sailing through the air as the creature removed its appendages from him and flung him down the alleyway behind it as it turned to stop something from hitting it. He hit the ground hard, but already it was getting hard to feel much of anything; he rolled along the damp concrete and came to rest in a small pool of trash fluid, vomit, and his own blood as it poured out of him. Though his vision was beginning to dim, he could make out a new figure in the alleyway.
It looked human to him, a man dressed in a strange and old outfit; he was dressed in a black samurai get-up complete with a katana which he had used to severe the previous sickle. His blade was currently clashing with the monster that had been attacking him, but the two separated a moment later. The man cursed as he saw the boy land, but he had no time to worry about that. The creature was upon him in a moment, its claws flashing to and fro, glistening in the fog scattered light with Genpaku’s blood.
”Damn you shinigami! Do you know how hard it is to regrow one of those! I’ll devour your hide to make up for it!” the creature screamed as it rushed at the man. He was being overpowered.
Genpaku could only watch from his position on the ground; broken, bloodied, barely conscious and losing a great deal of blood very quickly there was nothing else he could do. Questions barraged his mind faster than he could answer them as he watched the two beings go at it. Darkness blacker than storm clouds clawed at the edges of his vision, and an icy chill ran from his legs down his body, wrapping him in an icy embrace; he was dying.
”No…I don’t want to die here…” he thought weakly.
”Why?”
”Because I need to avenge my family, I don’t want someone else to die for me, and I want to know what the hell that thing is. I have too much I want to-wait, who said that?”
”I did.”
The voice rang out as clear as though the owner was standing next to him; he tried weakly to turn and look, and blinked.
When his eyes opened he was no longer laying in the alleyway bleeding; he was in an alien place that looked like a stone arena of some kind. It was worn and old, and not peaceful in the slightest; he had to cover his face as a great gust of wind rushed him and flowed about him as though it were trying to hold him. Above him a great thunderstorm raged, lightning struck and shattered a stone archway, and the thunder shook the ground as though there was an earthquake. How had he gotten here? Where was the strange man that had tried to rescue him gone, or the creature for that matter? He uncovered one of his eyes to look around and try to piece together where he was.
That’s when he noticed that he wasn’t alone; standing across from him was a tall man, dressed in similar garb to the man who had attempted the rescue a minute or so prior. Genpaku would have mistaken him for the man from earlier if it weren’t for the fact that the man was wearing a strange white overcoat; the man’s gaze was centered on him, and he seemed un-phased by the raging storm about the pair of them. He started forward to get closer to the man, but the winds kicked up harder this time, and somewhere overhead lightning flashed and thunder roared.
”Who are you?” Genpaku called out to the man, though he was barely able to hear it over the sound of the storm. The man moved his mouth in what he guessed was an answer, but the words never reached his ears; the storm must have drowned it out. When he didn’t respond, the man seemed to sigh.
”I suppose it is not surprising that you cannot hear me yet,” the man said, and it sounded as though the man was standing next to him.
Another crack of lightning which landed somewhere in the stands of the ancient arena, and the thunder roared loud once more.
”What are you talking about?” he called back. Instead of answering the man looked up at the maelstrom for a few moments; Genpaku frowned, annoyed and horribly confused.
”Are you going to answer me or what?”
”In a few moments you will die, and yet all you can do is yell at me? Maybe it would have been better to just allow you to get eaten by that hollow,” the man replied, shooting a hard look in Genpaku’s direction. Why was he being scolded by a stranger? And what the fuck was a Hollow?
”How in the hell do you know so much of what’s going on? Where are we?”
The man just shook his head once more.
”That creature that attacked you was a hollow; it has hunted you down to devour you.”
Well, that was one question cleared up, though it wasn’t any of the questions he had asked the man.
”Now, a Shinigami will die having tried to save you. That hollow will get two very nice meals tonight it seems.”
”What is a shinigami?
”The man who tried to save you; a being that wields their soul to vanquish hollows.”
The lightning flashed once more, this time slamming into the ground between the two of them. Instead of simply making a crater, the ground began to fall away into nothingness. Genpaku stepped back from the chasm as it began to grow, the ground falling down into it.
”It begins; that is your death and all you can do is back away or stand idle? Your father would be disappointed.”
A flash of anger swept over Genpaku’s features at this.
”What the fuck do you know about my father?” he yelled, the question meant to be rhetorical.
”That he had the backbone to stand up for the things he believed in, something his son seems to have failed to inherit.”
If there had not been a gaping chasm of nothingness between them, Genpaku would have lunged at the man then and there. However, more of the ground heaved and fell into it, and so he backed up some more.
”I don’t even understand what is going on! What the fuck am I supposed to do!?”
”Fight.”
The single word hung in the air for a few moments before it was shattered by the sound of thunder.
”I can’t.”
”Why?”
”Because the thing has nearly killed me alrea-“
”It HAS killed you. There is no one that can save you now; no one but yourself.”
Genpaku blinked, unsure of what the man was saying. He looked back at the falling ground as it drew closer to him. He tried to take another step back, but found the wall of the arena had crept up on him.
”You have nowhere else to run. If you hesitate now you will die. Your only option is to forge forward. Can you do that?”
Genpaku was silent, trying to answer that question in his head. Instead, he answered with another question. ”Who are you?”
The man gave what might have been a smirk.
”Why does that matter?”
”Because you seem to know what is going on here, and you seem to think I can fight my way out of this. I want to know who you are that backs up those thoughts.”
The man smirked at this, and shook his head.
”And I thought it would have been obvious to you by now. I am the one who can grant you the power to survive this, avenge your family, and forge a new life for yourself. I am the person who has been with you since you were born and will be with you until the day you fade from existence.”
The ground had nearly reached Genpaku by now, and a strange roar fell from the sky. His eyes went skyward, where he saw the maelstrom had grown, and now there was spider lightning coursing over the clouds, the epicenter of it seeming to be directly above him.
”Genpaku.” Genpaku’s eyes went back to the man, who was now floating above the chasm just a few feet from him.
”I am a piece of your soul.”
There was the crash of lightning and roar of thunder.
Meanwhile the beast and the shinigami continued their fight in the alleyway; the shinigami was in bad shape with several bad gashes along his arms and shoulders. He was breathing heavily by this point as well; he couldn’t land a decent blow when the Hollow could retaliate with so many different weapons from different directions for its counterattack.
”Die damn you, Shinigami!” the creature roared as it surged forward once more, as it attempt to grab the shinigami in a deadly embrace. As the shinigami jumped back to avoid the attack he was hit with the creature’s massive back section, sending him hurtling into the wall. It, for its part, could not believe its luck; first the boy with the abnormal amount of spiritual energy and now a Shinigami to feed upon. The shinigami was back on his feet before he ever hit the ground, but he was struck again and sent up into the air. The Hollow poised one of its sickles for the killing blow.
It never got the chance to land the strike as a new reiatsu suddenly hit the area; there was a blur of motion near the hollow and another sickle was sundered and hit the ground. The hollow let out a scream of pain as it tried to find what had just attacked it. The shinigami hit the ground hard just a few feet away, though he rolled off to the side out of the way as the Hollow locked onto the source of the Reiatsu. At the mouth of the alleyway was another shinigami; this one looked all too familiar. The Hollow shot a glance back at the broken and bloodied body of the boy he had been about to eat, which now lay lifeless and more importantly soulless upon the ground. It turned back, prepared to howl at the fledgling Shinigami and kill him, but found the alley mouth empty; pain exploded along its side as Genpaku’s blade detached another one of the sickles.
It let out another yell of pain as it suddenly launched off from the ground, sailing through the air backwards.
”How the hell did you get Shinigami powers boy!?” it screeched; its response was him appearing just above it, shoving his Zanpaku-tou straight down into its midsection and consequently the ground beneath. The Hollow howled again, but this time its remaining sickles shut like a trap in an attempt to catch the boy; they grasped nothing but air. Genpaku had pushed off of the creature, and now appeared on the ground behind the creature’s head. His hand slammed into the top of the creature’s mask in an open palmed strike; fractures rushed over the creature’s bone mask from the force.
Genpaku appeared once more as his hand closed around a second katana at his side. The blade flashed in the scattered streetlight as the remaining sickles were sundered and left to fall to the ground. The creature hit the ground with a thud and a wail.
”Die.”
The words were said with such venom and malice, and yet it was nothing compared to the look in Genpaku’s eyes; the alley was lighted by a brilliant emerald glow as Genpaku’s reiatsu flared, the second blade plunged into the Hollow’s throat, and he struck the creature dead in the center of its face with a closed fist strike; the force of this blow finished the job of the first as the mask shattered, the Hollow let out its death knell, and it slowly dissipated, its remains flitting into the night like ashes in the wind.
