» Personality: It is often said that it's the quiet ones you have to worry about. Though this is not always true, there is a reason that particular saying exists. Sometimes that quiet kid in the back of class is the arsonist that lit up a near by field. Maybe they're the ones that torture small animals or are secretly training in martial arts in order to protect themselves from bullies. They're often the intelligent ones, who prefer to keep their noses in books over being the social butterflies others can be. With Kai, it's not entirely clear which one he is. His demeanor is that of a confident outcast, which throws people off. He's the mysterious kid who always has that dark look in his eyes. He's the one that the girls think attractive, but would never have the courage to approach him on their own. Kai is the one that people step on egg shells around, never knowing what might set him off. He's has rumors spreading throughout the Gotei about him, but no one knows what is true. He's a mystery in reputation.

Kai is also a bit of a mystery beyond his reputation as well. He doesn't enjoy talking to people since he sees most of them as obnoxious. He doesn't like loud noises or constant talking because it wears him out. It doesn't wear him out in a literal since, but Kai doesn't have much tolerance or patience for anyone or anything beyond his training. Kai isn't someone who concentrates on his training that much either. If you can compare him to a modern day high school guy, he's an average B student with no extra curricular activities, talents, or hobbies. He does what he is supposed to do and lives from day to day in a dull and repetitive routine. The only thing that pulls him from his routine are missions.

Have you ever felt lost in life? Have you ever felt so alone and betrayed that everything around you feels empty? That's called depression! Depression is what this guy is going through. Kai doesn't have much to look forward to in his new life. He thought that joining the Gotei Thirteen was going to be a good change, but their sudden shift from the thirteen squads to this bullshit "united" force has sort of dulled his excitement. With nowhere else to go and no one else in his life to be a guide or source of motivation, there's no point of leaving the Gotei, but it's just not the same as before. Since he doesn't have much going for him, he actually doesn't see a point of doing anything. He's heard ideas about getting a goal to become Captain or even something like his shikai, but he's just not interested in that. He was told to go out and get a girlfriend in order to get laid, but even that seems doubtful. Women are always giggling and blushy; it's annoying. Kai prefers to just avoid those giggly little things...



» History: Born in Tokyo Japan in the year 2177, Kai lived a relatively normal and modest life with his Mother, Father, and older sister. Never truly wanting for anything, Kai got used to a comfortable life, never understanding the real drama behind his parents lives. When his Father suddenly got fired for a mess up at work, their family was forced to move to a poorer part of the city. Kai was a teenager at this time and so leaving his friends and everything hew knew threw him into a rebellious streak. He knew no one in his neighborhood, and though his parents warned him, he continued trekking through the streets of downtown Tokyo. Still wearing old clothes from the wealthier part of town caught the eye of a few ruffians with weapons. When he fought for his belongings instead of just handing them over, he was stabbed six times and left in the street to die. The next thing he knew, he was a soul.

It did not take long for Kai to get used to the dull life of a citizen in the Rukongai. There wasn't much special about living there. The only excitement came with violence from thugs and more powerful souls. Every now and then a Shinigami from the Gotei 13 would show up, but there wasn't much else. Kai experienced his first bit of real excitement when a section of his neighborhood had caught on fire. A young girl he knew ran into the flames to find her younger brother. At first he was just going to let her go, but he knew he'd feel guilty for the rest of his life if anything happened to her because he didn't get off his ass to help. He ran in after her, hoping to find the two. He did, but before the three of them could escape, a building collapsed around them. Trapped in the flames, he tried keeping the two siblings safe, but the fire was just growing larger. If it weren't for the Shinigami who rescued them, the three would have died there. Unfortunately, Kai passed out from breathing in smoke before he saw their face. This event sparked inspiration in Kai, pushing him to wanting to join the Gotei 13.

The event that gave Kai his inspiration happened twenty years ago. And this new found inspiration led Kai to Shino Academy. He was rejected at first, lacking any real evidence of reiryoku, understanding of what the Gotei 13 was, and any real combat skill. Kai had a problem with being told he wasn't good enough. The next three years was him training himself to fight. He went out and got his ass kicked a bit until he could hold his own. He picked up a katana for his first time and learned to use it as much as he could. He also did what he can to learn about the Gotei and what they did and stood for. Over time, he discovered he actually admired them for their goals and desire for justice and order. The next time he applied, Kai was accepted into Shino Academy. During his years there, he made an unwanted reputation for himself. He became a little too popular with the girls, had problems with other guys, and was always being bothered in some way. This often had him hiding out in random places.

When Kai graduated, he was an average student. He enrolled with the Eighth Division and chose to stay as a regular Seated Officer. He wasn't exactly ambitious, so rising in the ranks wasn't ever on his priority list. He was glad too, since the very recent change of the Gotei 13 to this "Gotei United" has shaken him a bit. No longer sure what sort of organization he's apart of has left him wonder where his loyalties do and should lie. The reasons behind the major condensing of the Gotei 13 into five squads weren't something he understood or really agrees with. Since the change, Kai has been even less motivated than he had been before. His desire to be apart of the Gotei has dwindled and he wonders whether this organization is going to fall apart some time soon. Until he figures out a way to feel decent with his own existence, Kai is going to just live day to day in his dull repetitive routine.



» Racial Abilities: An Average Shinigami

Hoho: Being a newer Shinigami, Kai's not exactly the highest skilled. For his level, however, Kai is on an average to above average level in Hoho. He has some natural talent with Hoho and is pretty quick on his feet. Since he's a bit of a natural in speed, his skill in Hoho comes a bit easier than the other Shinigami Arts. Right now, however, the only aspect of Hoho he practices is shunpo.

Zanjutsu: Kai actually enjoys swordsmanship, so zanjutsu is something he actually practices for the fun of it. It's not just a technique to use in fighting for him, but a true art form that he often studies. He has a habit of watching other higher skilled Shinigami in order to mimic and adapt their styles to his own. Though he's not as skilled at zanjutsu as he is with Hoho, this is his favorite.

Hakuda: Similar to zanjutsu, Kai thinks Hakuda is fun. He doesn't see it as any sort of art form, though he understands others think differently. He feels it's more in your face and brutal, while also fun for sparring. Sparring with blades is a little different than sparing with your fists. Sure, you can use wooden swords, but there is something off putting about fake-hitting someone with a fake weapon. Because of this, Kai often uses hand-to-hand styles in order to get his frustrations out.

Kido: Kai isn't the best at kido, but he's not the worst either. If you were to grade him on his skills, he'd have an A in Hoho, B+ in Zanjutsu, a B- in Hakuda and a flat C in kido. It's not something he's really interested in advancing, but he definitely likes the perks of moving into ranged combat if he needs to. Luckily, he doesn't often need to. Kai practices with kido enough to keep his skills sharp.

» Inner World: Kai's inner world is an an unending stone hallway made up of arches that continuously repeat. The hallway is eight feet wide. Each arch has two lit candles on each side, giving enough light to walk through unhindered. At each arch, there is an indent into the sides of the walls, giving a small amount of space for Kai to dodge or hide if needed. Kai's inner world is to allow him to make the most of the smallest amount of light. When blown out, each candle has three rounds of posts before it can be lit again. This is done because Kai's zanpakuto spirit wants him to learn to utilize, not only the small amounts of light, but his time as well. The hallway prevents easy dodging, helping him learn to fight in small spaces and making him think quicker on his feet if an attack is too large to dodge.

» Shikai Abilities: Upon the activation of his shikai, the blade turns black and gains the ability to absorb the energy from light and any light-based substances. Kai's shikai starts off with nothing absorbed. It cannot currently hold a charge in its sheath. When he absorbs, he gains 1 charge that can stack up to 3 times. If it gives off light, whether it be flame, electricity and lightning, or even kido and other energy based abilities, Kai's blade has the ability to absorb the energy from it. Kai's shikai allows for 1 absorption in a single post and there is a 1 post cool down, so he can absorb every other post. Once absorbed, he has the ability to manipulate that absorbed energy and expel it in different ways, such as energy attacks or shields. For each charge his shikai has, the energy within becomes greater. He can choose to expel a charge 1 at a time, or expel multiple charges for larger more powerful attacks.
