» Appearance Image:
Jian "Kai" Yijun [1-5] XMQT6Ig

» Appearance Written:

Four hundred years ago it would not have been a stretch to say Kai dressed a bit...uniquely. From eccentric hairstyle to peculiar clothing colors, he certainly fits in better in 2417 than 2017. However while dressing oddly may not be all that strange in modern times, the fact Kai is almost always garbed in black-tie clothing that stands out in the office building he works in, the modest apartment he lives in, and on the streets in between. Taught by his father to dress for the career he wants and not the job he works, Kai has long held the belief he should almost never wear casual clothing in public. He also believes sticking to one style is the best way to imprint himself into people's minds, which is why Kai tends to stick to a single primary attire color and hairdo.

Underneath all his visible clothing Kai wears a simple tight, ribbed undershirt grey in color that is both breathable and essentially invisible beneath the rest of his outfit. For his bottoms he prefers to wear loose-fitting boxer briefs for maximum comfort, which is important given how stuffy and high brow his outfit tends to be. Above the undershirt is a long sleeve button up dress shirt made of rare sea island cotton primarily white in color with gold outlines on the collar, bottom edge, and cuffs. The buttons are gold. For cufflinks, Kai tends to wear the same pair every day which was given to him by his father and take the shape of small green and gold crowns. With a taste for excellence, Kai has amassed quite a collection of high-end ties he wears interchangeably depending on his mood, day of the week, or event he plans on attending. However he is most commonly seen wearing a teal silk tie that goes uniquely well with the rest of his outfit.

Above his dress shirt is a solid black vest which is what really pushes his attire from "business" to "black-tie". Though tight fitting, it doesn't restrict his movements at all. Finally, the most prominent aspects of his usual outfit are the pine green blazer and slacks made of high-end worsted wool worn above all else that make him stand out in the thickest of crowds. The blazer is slim, has two moderately sized gold buttons, and more gold buttons on it's cuffs. The inside of the blazer is black and silk. Kai wears a pocket square which matches whatever tie he happens to have on at the time. His slacks are plain with flat fronts, and don't really stand out on their own. For shoes he primarily wears a pair of brown leather loafers.

Outside of how he dresses, what most stands out about Kai's appearance is his hairstyle. From front to back his hair is quite short, however it is grown out on the sides and kept neat in a green band on either side of his head. Kai's hair is black. His brown eyes are so dark they appear black, and the rest of his facial features are somewhat "sharp". Despite this, Kai's expression is usually soft yet determined, and not in the least bit aggressive. Beneath all his clothing and kind facial features lies a slim but strong body that is both muscular and wiry which, while perhaps intimidating to an average person, belies his real physical prowess due to his thinness.

Measuring in at a respectable five foot ten inches and weighing one hundred and fifty two pounds, Kai is about where he should be with the amount of muscle he has. Along with maintaining a healthy body, Kai also possesses very good and upright posture. Being raised on both a vegetarian diet and healthy lifestyle has made him focus on staying fit for both his own personal benefit, ie longer lifespan, as well as an advantage for going further in life.

II. Personality

» Personality:

Kai possesses a complex personality with various dispositions and character traits that make up his persona. Like all people he has been shaped not just by his genes but by his own personal experiences as well, which have coalesced to form the multifaceted painting that is his personality. Due to still being quite young and inexperienced in both worldly matters and the general dynamic of the reality around him, any major event or situation he finds himself in could dramatically alter his psyche if it impacts him in a personal way. The reason he is more susceptible than most to such an alteration is the fact he has not had time or struggled enough to truly cement his values, beliefs, and mannerisms on a more permanent scale. However, this doesn't mean his personality is like a blank slate; in fact, it would be more accurate to say it is like a pencil drawing: At any point lines could be erased or colors could begin to flow in.

Having grown up in a rather traditional household, Kai has been shaped by his parents to put emphasis on personal success by climbing the ladder of business and monetary affluence. Though not one to resort to less-than-savory or shady tactics, Kai is in fact quite willing to do almost whatever it takes to advance his career. This usually results in him merely working harder and longer than his peers and competition, but he is not beyond (albeit very rarely) committing perhaps unscrupulous actions to get what he wants. Despite this, Kai has never and likely wouldn't ever turn to truly criminal or, for lack of a better word, evil acts to further himself or his own prosperity.

One of his more obnoxious traits is how much he detests getting dirty or ruining whatever outfit he has on. This isn't necessarily related to vanity as much as it is to his frugality, meaning because he spends quite a bit of money on obtaining the highest-end clothing possible it just makes sense to him to be particularly meticulous about his attire and keeping it clean. Though just a minor characteristic, this aspect of his personality has actually landed him quite a few unfortunate situations. At one point when Kai was walking home from work on a rainy day, a car drove through a puddle on the side of the street which promptly comically splashed him and soaked his clothes. This resulted in him chasing the car to the end of the street, copying down the evil doer's licence plate, and then called the police to try to get them arrested.

Above all else, Kai works to the best of his abilities to be a good citizen and a better person. Though his childhood and schooling had focused on getting him to a strong career his father taught him to live a virtuous life, and to honor not just his country but the people in it as well. This is perhaps the most tenable facet of his character, and it shows in most everything he does. While he, as stated previously, does sometimes do things that would not be called the most honorable of actions, Kai always goes out of his way to help those in need. When walking to or from work if he ever chances upon a homeless person or beggar he makes sure to give them a generous donation not to feel good about himself, but to legitimately help those less fortunate than he. While others may walk by just a bit faster when they witness a mugging or attack,

Kai is the type of person to try to rescue the person in trouble or resolve whatever conflict is occurring. However, to call him a 'hero' would be a gross overstatement. While he would be willing to put himself in a potentially dangerous situation to assist someone, because he has never truly experienced a life or death event he has yet to truly be tested so it would be a stretch to say he'd risk his own life to save someone else's. If his fight or flight response was pushed to the edge there is the chance he would actually choose self preservation and flee or focus on defending himself instead of someone more needy or in danger.

Despite never having been in a scenario in which he could potentially die at any minute, Kai does seem to have a very active and strong decision-making ability. What this essentially boils down to is if ever was in this kind of situation, while he may not be able to completely predict what he would choose to do he can take solace in knowing he'd be able to decide rather quickly. Being able to make on-the-fly decisions has always been a tremendous boon to his career as it has allowed him to react to immediate and pressing changes or new developments without slowing down or worsening the situation. This has helped him garner respect from supervisors and employers which usually results in more responsibilities for himself, and thus swifter career advancement.

Politically speaking, Jian Yijun has always identified as somewhat middle-of-the-road. He isn't the type of person to hold extreme views on either side of the spectrum and is a firm believer in compromise in order to get through tough situations and solve complex problems in his community. As far as economics go Kai believes a free market that affords everyone equal opportunity to advance as much as their individual ability allows while simultaneously protecting and helping those who cannot is the best way to go.

Kai possesses indomitable ambition, though not in the typical sense. While it may present itself most obviously as trying to advance his career, in truth even gaining a high ranking position in business wouldn't satisfy him. The question then becomes what would satisfy him, which is something he's still yet to figure out. Even while doing things he enjoys, such as a hobby or eating a good meal, there is always a nagging feeling in the back of his mind that makes him want for something more. It is this same feeling which drives Kai to help people around him and go out of his way to assist those who cannot help themselves or are in danger. Though he has yet to really address whatever this is or what it means, it grows ever stronger and more impactful on the decisions he makes and the actions he commits to.

When it comes to women Kai has always been in a bit of an odd predicament. While in a business setting or an emergency he has absolutely no problem speaking to and communicating with those of the opposite sex, including engaging in small talk and physically interacting with them, in a casual or out-of-the-office situation he stiffens up and seemingly loses his cool. It's not that he doesn't want to do well with women, he's just never accrued any experience doing so as his entire life has been focused on academics and work. If a situation is bad enough there is a good chance he won't be able to maintain eye contact, will lose focus, and start saying, essentially, nonsense.

III. History

» History:

Part 1: Birth and Childhood

On the 18th of May in the year of 2393 Li Yijun gave birth to a little black haired boy in China's Guangdong province. His father Wei decided to name his son Jian due to the baby's healthiness and strength. Wei owned a lucrative store in the prosperous city of Zhuhai and his family lived quietly and peacefully, purposefully ignorant of the world's politics and volatile affairs due to believing it was the best way to stay safe. This lifestyle worked for Wei and Li for years before and after Jian was born. Thanks to this, Jian had a relatively mundane but healthy infant life.

Growing up in China in the late twenty fourth century wasn't too bad, some perks included being reasonably wealthy and living without much conflict. With the Kokuryuteshi Empire having complete and total control over China, the entire nation was able to avoid becoming a war or conflict zone. Thanks to this fact, Wei was able to shape his child into whatever he wanted, which ended up being a traditionalist who prioritized self- and familial prosperity and success. As a young boy Jian maintained top grades in school and spent his free time working in his father's store which only reinforced the beliefs Wei wanted to instill in him. Though restrictive, Jian loved his parents and was happy for being able to live a somewhat privileged life.

When Jian was twelve years old a sudden and unforeseen terrorist attack rocked the bordering region of Macau. According to reports at the time anarchists who considered K-World to be evil and had been spending decades fighting against the regime had instigated the attack, killing hundreds of people and causing tremendous damage to multiple government and business-operated buildings. Though Macau's officials stated they had been able to stomp out the insurgent group, Wei was worried for his and his family's safety. Innocent, uninvolved civilians had been harmed, and in some cases killed, by the attack and in such trying times as these there was no way to know if the officials had been truthful in their claims or if they were just trying to prevent regional unrest.

With this in mind Wei sold his store, home, and many of his belongings he couldn't take with him and packed his family up. The one thing he knew was Japan was probably the safest land in the entire world at this time bar none, at least for a small family of powerless humans, so that was their destination. Initially they were supposed to go to Karakura City due to it being essentially the closest thing to utopia on Earth, but after getting stuck in Kyoto for a few days due to Li coming down with a fever Wei decided to settle down in the ancient ex-capital of Japan. Thanks to all the money he had gotten for selling off his properties in Zhuhai Wei was able to purchase a modest home in a residential area and open a new, albeit smaller, commodity shop.

Part 2: A New Life in Kyoto

Peace. Prosperity. Wei, Li, and Jian were able to obtain both of these vital goals in their new, foreign home. Li's racial heritage happened to be quite useful in Kyoto as her father had been a Japanese diplomat who fell in love with a beautiful but strong Chinese soldier on one of his many visits to his homeland's sister country. Taught to speak both their languages as a girl and raised in a home with interwoven cultures like a mixing pot quilt, Li was able to transfer this knowledge to Jian as a young teenager. Though Wei continued to teach his son to work hard and live traditionally, this was made difficult by the boy's own curiosity in the new world he lived in.

In his mid-teens Jian underwent a miniature transformation into a rebellious phase that both worried and aggravated his father on multiple occasions. When he was fifteen he got into a fight at school, though truthfully it was more like a brawl as many of his classmates were involved, and came out looking like he had been thrown down a flight of stairs. Despite this his classmates started calling him "Kai", meaning victor, because the other children came out looking even worse. Refusing to be acknowledged by his actual name at home, his mother eventually started calling him Kai endearingly and thus the nickname stuck. By the time he reached the end of his primary school years Kai had once again become an upstanding, right-minded youth who inherited the strict traditional lifestyle of his father and the endless ability to care for others from his mother.

After graduating, Kai immediately enrolled in Kyoto University with a business management major. Though a transformative and experimental experience for many of his peers, Kai kept his nose tucked between the pages of his textbooks and focused on getting and maintaining the highest possible grades. Participating in various extracurricular activities such as student congress and various internships, Kai was able to achieve excellence in everything he did. Though he wasn't some sort of super genius or the world's next Einstein, the young man worked harder and longer than everyone around him in order to make his father proud and obtain greatness for himself.

Part 3: Adult Life and Now

Once again Kai graduated from school and, with no downtime, started the next era of his life. Thanks to the effort he put forth in university, Kai was able to get to quickly get a management position at a nearby accounting firm. Though he continued to outshine his coworkers and essentially became relied on by almost all his superiors, there was little room for advancement in this company so he decided to keep his eyes open for better offers while keeping his head down and saving money. It was about this time, the summer of 2415, when Kai was mugged coming home from work. Though he was able to escape without suffering any serious injuries, this event led to him purchasing a firearm and undergoing self defense classes due to how much it rattled him.

Eventually Nidzen Corp., a moderately large electronics company, reached out to Kai and gave him a mid-level corporate position. Since then Jian Yijung has enjoyed multiple promotions based on his own merit and being able to take care of his parents in times of both sickness and health without financial worries. However, this lifestyle started to become....boring for Kai. For the past two years, days seemed to blend together and Kai began to think more about his life's purpose and if he was missing out on something greater. Though not a believer in destiny, the idea of some sort of grand fate he was missing or ignoring grew more prominent in the back of his mind. Today Kai still lives in Kyoto, still works at Nidzen Corp., and still struggles to find his purpose.

After experiencing visions of another land, Kai went on an adventure to his homeland China. This led him to an underground chamber of sorts thousands of years old. In it, Kai battled his way through dozens of dangerous enchanted Terracotta soldiers, pushing himself past the limits he'd known his entire life. This included forcing himself to use far more physical strength than he is normally capable of. After this feat he came upon the Heirloom Seal which transformed and placed itself on his finger. Following this the spirit of one of China's greatest warriors in history, Guan Yu, showed up and attacked Kai with a ferocity previously unseen by the young Chinese man. After being reduced to only blocking with Bastion Stance, Kai's rage exploded and the situation forcibly unlocked new powers (Assault Stance, Jade Dragon's Flames, and Mandate of Heaven) which allowed him to go on the offensive and, after a nail-biting battle, claim victory over Guan Yu by destroying his physical body and putting his spirit to rest once and for all. Though exhausted, this personal adventure allowed Kai to shatter his old limits, unlock a couple new abilities, and become a better person overall after it was through.

IV. Equipment

» Equipment:

Jian "Kai" Yijun [1-5] SbEY1Ic
P.I.L.H.S. Device: Full name PROspace Industries Localized Handheld Storage Device, this piece of cutting edge technology was purchased by Kai less than a year ago to make travel and work easier and simpler. This tool is about five inches long and weighs a couple ounces at most, and has a band attached to it that allows the owner to carry it on his wrist, connected to his belt, or hanging from any other piece of clothing they wear. This device is used to store multiple objects of almost any size without weighing or bogging down the user at all and accomplishes this task by essentially creating a "hammerspace" about the size of a house (meaning the overall size of the items stored in the device cannot exceed that of an average house). By scanning an object, a process which takes anywhere from 2-5 seconds depending on said object's size, the user can send it into the somewhat small storage space until they need it again. This device can operate in two modes: Manual, which requires the user to press the button at the top of the machine to add or remove objects and; Automatic, which syncs the device up with the user's thoughts allowing them to use it at will.

Jian "Kai" Yijun [1-5] Zb9srI6
Erphtal: Originally known as the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, this weapon has been passed down patrilineally for generations. Stories say it was originally forged for legendary Shu Han Chinese military leader Guan Yu over two thousand years ago. This guandao was purportedly wielded by the mighty Guan Yu in combat for years until his death when it was taken from his corpse until his son eventually took it back. At some point it was lost to the ages for centuries, if not longer. Though there were various cases of individuals claiming to have discovered the weapon, it wasn't until the 1800's when one of Kai's ancestors happened upon the real Green Dragon Crescent Blade who promptly hid it somewhere safe and passed it down to his son. In the year 2318 Kai's great grandfather reforged the weapon using a combination of modern metal alloys and high density spiritual particles to make it extraordinarily durable, and renamed it Erphtal in his own father's honor. Being both durable and strong, this guandao possesses an extremely sharp blade capable of cutting and crushing many objects it hits as well as a dangerous stabbing tool on the other end. Despite having received Erphtal when he turned 21 years old, Kai has yet to train extensively or undergo any sort of apprenticeship to learn how to use this weapon optimally. Erphtal is almost always located inside Kai's P.I.H.L.S. Device.

Jian "Kai" Yijun [1-5] KXSducn
M-13 Mantis: Purchased after Kai had been mugged while coming home from work in the summer of 2415, this handgun is at the forefront of personal self-defense technology on Earth. The sleek design, comfortable one-size-fits-all hand grip, and high stopping power allows the user to always maintain peace of mind no matter what kind of trouble arises or sticky situation they get into. The M-13 Mantis has a stock clip of ten high caliber rounds infused with high density spiritual particles capable of taking down even large Hollows and other monsters in just a few shots. The Mantis possesses high accuracy thanks to it's smooth iron sights, strong recoil dampening, and rapid fire technology allowing the user to take out targets while on the run or from a reasonable distance (accurate up to three dozen yards in high stress situations, longer if target is stationary). Unlike many other available weapons in 2417, the M-13 Mantis isn't compatible with aftermarket parts and has ammunition types limited to the gun's manufacturer, HighpolE. Kai usually keeps two or three extra magazines in his P.I.H.L.S. Device due to ease of access, though he may bring more in specific instances.

Jian "Kai" Yijun [1-5] 2rVgwGK
Heirloom Seal of the Realm: Carved out from jade in 221 BCE by Qin Shi Huang after uniting all of China as emperor for the first time in history, this ancient artifact of immense importance once belonged to Yuan Shu during the Three Kingdoms era of China over 2,200 years ago. After Yuan Shu's death it fell into the welcoming hands of Liu Bei, who immediately hid it after making a replica which was obtained by Cao Cao. This action was meant to enable Liu Bei to bide his time until he was prepared to declare himself the true emperor of China, but unfortunately the future kingdom of Cao Wei had grown too powerful and thus he had no opportunity to do so. Hoping a descendant would someday reclaim the jade dragon Seal, Liu Bei had it placed in an underground crypt along with ordering Guan Yu to tie his spirit inside after his death. Eventually in 2417 Kai was drawn to this underground chamber where upon touching the Seal it was transformed into a brilliant jade emerald ring which refuses to leave the finger it was placed on. This nigh-indestructible piece of jewelry possesses no abilities but is priceless as an artifact and declares Kai can potentially become the true emperor of China.

V. Human Traits

» Powers:

Spiritually Aware: Like the vast majority of humans alive on Earth in 2417, at one point Kai developed the ability to sense spiritual creatures around him. Over time Kai's senses and ability to track spiritual beings have increased dramatically, allowing him to fight dangerous non-human foes without struggling too much or being outpaced visually.

Physical Attributes: Thanks to his healthy diet and regular work out routine which includes weight lifting, cardio, flexibility, and limited acrobatic exercises Kai is in optimum shape for a man his age. A few examples of feats he's capable of performing include successfully chasing down a robber or mugger, being able to lift and throw heavy objects other people may not be able to, and using parkour to traverse odd/urban terrain to reach a location as quick as possible. Kai is able to effectively, at least insofar as being able to swing it repeatedly, wield Erphtal a large polearm without tiring for extended periods of time. After particularly strenuous or lengthy exercises/physical exertions Kai will start to slow down until eventually tiring out completely. While in China Kai was able to physically overpower the spirit of Guan Yu, a warrior and military leader of legend. Kai's strength has increased steadily until he shattered the normal limitations of his human body, now being able to smash through stone pillars bare-fisted and destroy metal with Erphtal. His speed easily outpaces anything regular humans are capable of, and in some instances Kai can even outrun vehicles. Attempting to harm Kai can also be difficult as his natural durability as increased to supernatural levels.

Small Firearms Training: Before purchasing his handgun Kai undertook extensive training to learn how to both handle the weapon as carefully and safely as possible as well as how to properly protect himself with it should he ever need to. While he isn't exactly some kind of prodigy or bullseye genius, Kai is able to accurately and reflexively shoot at precise targets even in high-stress situations. While his instruction didn't include larger weaponry such as rifles or heavy arms, Kai has enough practice with aiming and firing he would at the very least be able to adequately defend himself with either of the aforementioned types of guns.

Jade Dragon's Flames: Also unlocked during his duel with Guan Yu in an ancient underground crypt, this is less an ability and a full fledged power. Kai possesses the ability to create, manipulate, and utilize dangerous green-coloured fire in a multitude of ways. This fire possesses a few significant traits which differentiate it from standard, common fire. First off the flames themselves are noticeably hotter than normal, to the point of being able to melt and weld metals without too much trouble. Against other fire users this can be useful in allowing Kai to beat out or overtake their flames, though not easily. Second, the Jade Dragon's Flames are uniquely immune to water of all kinds. While the fire can certainly be suffocated or stuffed out, water is rendered ineffective against it similar to how some individuals possess ice which cannot melt. This trait provides Kai with extra versatility in underwater combat or versus people who may usually completely counter fire users. Lastly Kai's green fire, on touch, "frees" physical and metaphysical objects from their previous "sovereign". To put it simply, if a Quincy capable of manipulating his arrows after shooting them were to fire one and have it be hit by these flames, the Quincy would lose all control over the arrow. This applies to abilities and objects of all kinds, a trait most noticeably effective against other element-users. This excludes objects like Zanpakutos, Quincy bows/spirit weapons, and their ilk.

Kai is able to utilize his Jade Dragon's Flames to complement his other abilities, namely Stances. This leads to his fire being not just offensive, but defensive and utility-based as well. An example of an attack would be to infuse fire into a Ranger Stance arrow to cause more damage or even an inferno explosion on impact. Defensively it could be used to coat his Bastion shield to provide extra durability against energy-based attacks. Lastly, Kai can use a burst of fire to push himself in a specific direction allowing for a quick last minute dodge or leap into the air. Unfortunately the use of this fire for extended periods of time can be extremely costly energy-wise and due to its natural unbiased destructive nature can, especially as Kai has not yet completely mastered it, prove harmful when created or used near allies. If not kept in check these flames can also cause mayhem by spreading and damaging the local environment, which is particularly dangerous in areas permeated by plants or flammable objects.

As Kai's flames have gotten stronger they have also adapted new passive and unique traits that increase their effectiveness and power. Individuals struck by his green fire are Burned, increasing the damage taken from following fire attacks by 5% for the next two posts. Burned can stack three times, and new stacks extend the debuff like this: At 1 Stack he has 3 posts, and 2 he has 2 posts, and at 3 he has 1 post. Once three stacks have been placed on the same target, any following hit of fire while they are active will cause said target to become Scorched. Instead of going up by 5% at a time, Scorched is an immediate increase from 15% to 25% and reduces regenerative abilities by 20% (due to burning away tissue) for two following posts (cannot be extended). Once this debuff drops off Kai may begin reapplying Burned to his opponent after 3 posts have passed. Along with this, upon being Scorched the target will be momentarily enveloped in his flames regardless if they are on them at the time. This fire benefits from the 25% damage increase.

  • Jade Dragon's Roar: At times of high desperation or emotional levels, Kai is capable of utilizing arguably his most powerful non-Stance attack. Unlike his other techniques which use a weapon or piece of equipment, Jade Dragon's Roar consists solely of empowering his Jade Flames in order to cause as much damage as possible. To start Kai places both of his fists against his chest and breathes in deeply, allowing him to focus on churning and condensing as much energy as possible into his core. Following this, Kai releases all his pent up power and rage in one powerful explosion. By shifting forward and striking forward with both fists, index and middle fingers now pointing at his target, this energy is transformed into a tidal wave of green fire. Almost immediately the fire takes the shape of a large oriental dragon with pretty specific details created from the flames. This dragon possesses a higher destructive force and intensity than any fire Kai is usually capable of creating, and can even be manipulated mid-use. What this boils down to is Kai has the ability to change the dragon's direction to a decently accurate degree. Of course along with all this power and intensity comes with it significant exhaustion, sapping Kai of much of his physical and mental strength. However, what is unique about Jade Dragon's Roar is it can be used even when Kai is already very low on these resources. While this can have more severe drawbacks, such as fainting, it turns this technique into a capable last resort attack.

Mandate of Heaven: Defined over three thousand years ago, the term Mandate of Heaven was used to proclaim an individual the "Son of Heaven". What this boiled down to was a supposed mandate from heaven to justify a ruler's rule. This wasn't unique to China as Europe possessed the "divine right of kings", an idea which essentially allowed rulers to do as they pleased under the guise of heaven-given kingship. The Mandate differs in the fact it may declare a truly just individual to be emperor of China, but it purposely does not excuse poor behavior or cruel actions. Along with the heaven-sent mandate to rule, it also supported rebels more righteous and just than whoever happened to sit on the Dragon's Throne at the time.

Kai inherited the Mandate of Heaven due to his spirit being ancient Chinese Emperor Liu Bei's, just two thousand two hundred years older. However, it his Kai's just and righteous beliefs and actions which bestow the Mandate upon him as without them he would be like any other incarnation of Liu Bei's spirit: A regular, unimpressive man. For Kai, the Mandate of Heaven exists as both a claim to the Dragon Throne as well as a very real, very noticeable unique passive ability. As it is the supposed result of heaven, the will of the universe, to free China of its incumbent ruler, the Mandate provides Kai with a significant 1.5 times boost in all his powers while within the borders of the ancient nation. This includes his skills, abilities, and potential power ceiling. However, it is also active outside China in the form of a constant 1.2 times overall power boost contingent on Kai staying on the righteous path and not straying from heroism expected of him by the Mandate. Should Kai's attitude or actions swing the opposite way in any form he will suffer from a disastrous 0.7 times multiplier to everything until he changes back (Kai's righteousness is determined both by me and staff, aka if staff notices he isn't doing what he should be they can activate this debuff).

Stance Shift: In times of tremendous duress, such as a life or death situation or being near death in general, Kai gained the limited ability to change the "Stance" he is in temporarily. As of now this ability is now able to consciously be used, allowing him to switch between Stances at will and without much trouble. However, a single Shift takes a decent amount of energy to perform and thus he is prevented from repeatedly shifting without detriment. While at most Kai may only shift twice a post, over the course of a thread he is only limited by the amount of energy he possesses as a whole. Currently Kai has access to four Rank 1 Stances: Standard, Bastion, Ranger, and Assault, with Standard being his normal appearance and power, and thus the default; two Rank 2 Stances: Youxia and Gunner; and one Rank 3 Stance: Dragoon.

Rank 1 Stances:

  • Bastion Stance: While normally Kai is a pretty balanced individual, particularly in combat, the ability to shift to this form allows him to become a more defensive fighter. There are currently two unique abilities this Stance affords Jian Yijun while he is in it. The first is the metaphysical hardening of his skin which not only makes Kai slightly more durable but he also gains a higher pain threshold/tolerance as well which translates to a single rank increase in both his Durability and Pain Endurance stats. On the flip side Kai's General Speed and Weapon Skill stats both drop one rank (if one or both are beginner he still feels a noticeable drop in said stats). Second, a magnificent shield (seen here:
    Spoiler:
), more durable than advanced alloys and able to defend Kai from multiple moderately strong physical or energy-based attacks, is summoned and placed in his left hand. The shield can change size at will from its regular three foot height and one and a half foot width to about 1.5x that. After breaking or shattering this shield can be re-summoned three times in the same thread at a meager cost of energy.

    • Flaming Bulwark: First used in combat against the powerful Moroi Wareyasui, this technique combines the volatility of Kai's Jade Fire and Bastion Stance's durability. By coating his shield in highly condensed flames, it can become significantly more effective at blocking element and energy based attacks. Along with this, Flaming Bulwark can prove dangerous to individuals who strike Kai's shield in close range, either with their own weapon or with a limb. In this way it allows Bastion Stance to be used offensively, no longer restricting it solely to blocking and staying on the defensive. Continuously coating his shield can sap at Kai's energy reserves, but timing the use of Flaming Bulwark intelligently (ie using it right before he gets attacked) can reduce this downside considerably.

  • Ranger Stance: Obtained some time after Kai's inquisition in Tampa, this form solves an issue he has struggled with since his first adventures. Prior to Ranger Stance, the only ranged capability Kai possessed was a handgun which was less effective than an actual ability would be. By activating this Stance Kai gains access to a jade bow with the ability to summon matching arrows at will (seen here:
    Spoiler:
. Both these objects are formed from dense spiritual energy concentrated into physical shapes. While the bow is more difficult to reform should it suffer serious damage, individually each arrow doesn't take much energy to form at all meaning Kai can shoot at least a few hundred arrows throughout a thread before becoming exhausted. The bow, named Shenyi after the mythological archer, possesses great strength and is able to send arrows flying much farther and faster than a man-made weapon should normally be capable of. Along with this the arrows themselves are two-pronged and have quite sharp tips able to pierce even metal objects or armor. Though Kai is not exactly a practiced sharpshooter, his ability to use Ranger Stance can be quite fearsome especially against individuals whom struggle in long distance combat. With it being his most prolifically used Rank 1 Stance, Kai has developed a much greater comfort in Ranger's use. Not only can he rapidly shoot many arrows without tiring, but Kai's ability to use this Stance creatively has increased as well. Against a powerful demonic cyborg in Hawaii Kai was able to pin and destroy it through tactically causing internal damage and utilizing the environment intelligently, thus making Ranger by far his most versatile Stance. Finally, Ranger Stance causes changes to his Skill sheet: In exchange for dropping his Strength stat a full rank, his general Speed increases a full rank. This synergizes with Ranger because it makes it easier for Kai to stay out of close range where this Stance suffers most.

    • Ranger Gears: Over time Kai has developed two different "Gears" in which he can use Ranger Stance more effectively. What separates this from actual Stance changes is function: While Stances have their own identities and abilities, Gears are closer to techniques. The first, Spread, consists of nocking and firing multiple arrows simultaneously and aimed in different directions. The primary use of this is to cause more widespread damage, such as taking out multiple enemies at once. Along with this, the "Bomb" effect of infusing fire into his arrows to create infernal explosions can be used to damage a larger area of effect than normal. The second Gear is called Precision and focuses on more specific, precise goals. By focusing intently on his surroundings, movements, and senses, Kai can aim and fire individual arrows to a much more accurate degree than previously. In fact, it wouldn't be a stretch for Kai to pinpoint and strike something the size of a fizzy drink can from dozens of meters away with Precision Gear.

    • Incineration Arrow: Against Inami Asthavon Kai figured out a way to increase the piercing and destructive power of an individual arrow without just creating a larger explosion. This process involves imbuing and coating a Ranger Stance arrow with an incredible amount of fire, increasing the projectile's temperature to a level allowing it to burn through objects he could not normally pierce. Along with this, the fire is not wild and the clear silhouette of the arrow remains visible (though it appears charred). This creates a weapon far faster and more powerful than his Gunner Stance's Hyper Piercing ability. Against the Demon Queen Inami, Kai was able to destroy her middle section entirely and cause catastrophic burns across her remaining body. While she had taken damage prior, Incineration Arrow was able to defeat Inami and put her out of commission. Due to the energy cost of this technique, he can only use it once or twice in a thread depending on his emotional state. Along with this, Incineration Arrow is quite telegraphed and if the target is faster than it they can usually dodge without worry of being caught up in an explosion like his other arrows. Kai believes this ultimate offensive ability can severely harm individuals significantly stronger than himself, and as such he only uses it in the most extreme cases.

  • Assault Stance: Unlike his first two Stances, this one was unlocked not from necessity but from his raw emotional state. While in combat with the spirit of Guan Yu, Kai was forced on the defensive to the point of not even being able to fight back. It wasn't until the powerful feelings of shame and insecurity of his own weakness bubbled to the surface, mixing to concoct an extreme sense of rage, was this Stance unlocked. Assault is also Kai's first real close range offensive technique which completes the trifecta of offense, defense, and range he has been sorely missing. By switching to this Stance Kai is able to summon a pair of beautiful and engraved magic swords, named the Swords of Fate, previously belonging to Liu Bei (seen here:
    Spoiler:
which he dual-wields. These swords, one short one long, are both regal and intimidating simultaneously. Though not individually named, each possesses its own unique identity making them one-of-a-kind. The short sword possesses a thicker blade while overall being lighter allowed for quicker movements, and is held in Kai's offhand. The primary sword is significantly longer and heavier, meaning Kai can usually do more damage across a greater surface area but can't swing it as fast as its brother. Together they make a dangerous duo capable putting the fear in fodder Kai comes across like none other. Their general durability and sharpness are both quite staggering given Kai's own unremarkable level of power, and thus rarely need to be reformed in a thread. However, in case damage did occur each blade can be remade a total of three times in a thread. Assault Stance grants Kai the singular ability to telekinetically control their position within a range of about sixty meters. Defensively this makes it more difficult to keep the swords out of his grasp, such as by knocking one or both out of his hands, while offensive applications include throwing one and then bringing it back to him to rinse and repeat. Lastly, Assault Stance lowers Kai's general Durability and Pain Endurance stats a full rank (or equivalent amount if min or max) in order to increase his Strength skill a full rank or equivalent.

    • Jade Dragon Slash: First used against Law, this technique is a powerful application of Kai's Jade Flames by using his Assault Stance blades as its vehicle of destruction. To start, Kai lifts and crosses his two swords, forming a "X" with their edges. Following this he can choose to yell the technique's name out loud, but choosing not to doesn't reduce its power. As he slides the blades across each other a large amount of energy is charged up and expelled, creating a "X" of his Jade Flames of greater intensity than he is usually capable of. This attack can travel for quite a distance, and can grow up to twenty meters in size before maxing out. Upon impact it explodes into a dangerous inferno capable of overwhelming Cero-level attacks and potentially still causing damage to its target afterward. As its strength implies, Jade Dragon Slash is an exhausting technique to use in succession and as such is better to use sporadically.

Rank 2 Stances:

  • Youxia Stance: In Chinese literature and poetry, tales of wandering knights are celebrated as folk heroes. These individuals, called Youxia, are honoured and personified in this Stance. The first of Kai's Rank 2 Stances, Youxia is exceptional in many regards. By combining the increased durability of Bastion and the powerful offensive strength of Assault, Kai is able to create a fusion greater than the sum of its parts. While Bastion's Shield is ported as is, his swords are replaced by Ai Hu (seen here:
    Spoiler:
), named for the Young Hero of famous Chinese novel The Three Heroes and Five Gallants. Both the shield and sword of Youxia are more durable and stronger than any used in lower Stances. Unique to Youxia are two primary effects which remain active at all times: First, 15% of all damage Kai would incur or blocks is reflected on the attacker; meaning, if someone used a Cero against him a portion of its power would be sent back as a wave of damage-causing pressure (functionally and structurally different from spiritual pressure). Regardless of the kind of attack, 15% is mirrored (includes mental and indirect attacks). Damage-over-time is reflected periodically, meaning if Kai is continuously being damaged by something, once a post 15% of the total accumulated damage from that attack over the course of that post is reflected. Second, Youxia Stance ignores exhaustion and damage. Effectively this means Kai can continue to use Youxia Stance regardless of how tired or injured he is, and he is unable to be knocked out while using this Stance. Total exhaustion once he stops using Youxia can hit him like a freight train, but with it active he is immune to this. While active, Kai's durability and pain endurance increase by the equivalent of a full level while his speed decreases an equivalent amount. As a Rank 2 Stance, Youxia has a higher initial cost to use than Rank 1's.

  • Gunner Stance: Of his Rank 1 Stances, Ranger is certainly and obviously the most versatile. Seen as the Rank 2 equivalent, Gunner could be assumed to possess the same attribute. Instead, Gunner trades the precision of Ranger for the increased power of Assault Stance. By combining the ranged and rapid fire aspects of Ranger and the heightened offensive power and dual-wielding of Assault, Gunner's capabilities are greater than the sum of its parts. In place of his bow, Kai gains access to two automatic firing crossbows (seen here:
    Spoiler:
). These weapons fire bolts at an alarmingly high rate, beating out Ranger's bow's absolute fastest speed by x2. The bolts themselves are also individually slightly more powerful than arrows, and while they can be infused with fire to create miniature explosions it is just as effective to utilize their incredible piercing strength. In fact, a bolt is twice as piercing as an arrow when Gunner is compared to Ranger. However it is worth noting overall the crossbows are moderately less accurate than the bow and can make precision firing more difficult. Like most others, Gunner Stance possesses a unique trait which separates it from its peers: Hyper Piercing is the ability to fuse six bolts into one with the goal of firing a single more powerful projectile. This attack is six times more piercing and three times more overall powerful than individual bolts, allowing Kai to damage considerably more durable opponents than usual. These bolts can cause greater explosions with Jade Flames as well. As expected, they are six times more exhausting to use than regular bolts and also fire in much slower succession, about a third as fast.

Rank 3 Stances:

Dragoon Stance: Historically, dragoons were mounted sword and spear-using cavalry. Named for the french "dragon", a handgun blunderbuss capable of tearing large holes through their victims, these warriors have evolved over time to become armoured military units. All of these facts are represented by Kai's Dragoon Stance. In this form his Armour of the Reborn King changes drastically, as well as the shape of his Erphtal pole arm, as seen here:
    Spoiler:
. Erphtal has changed from a guandao to a spear-type weapon with serrated edges, an ornate emerald gem below the blade's base, and a wider stabbing blade on the opposite end. His armour has shifted so much of the billowy fabric has been replaced by hard leader and metal plates, streamlining the garb for combat, as well as the newly placed dragon-shaped helmet with flowing white hair on his head. Overall his new armour and weapon are far fiercer than his lower Stances or regular Erphtal, openly and outwardly displaying the difference between them and Dragoon Stance.

Being a Rank 3 Stance, Dragoon is far more dangerous than the lower Ranked ones. Unlike Youxia and Gunner which combine two of his Rank 1's, this can be considered the perfect fusion of all three (Bastion, Ranger, and Assault). For this reason, even among his higher Stances, Dragoon is by far his most versatile. Physically, Kai sees large buffs to his speed, strength, and durability simultaneously (equivalent to 50% of a boost in rank). This surpasses Youxia and Gunner which only increase two of the three at a time, and doesn't lower any to do so (also unlike the previous Stances). Next, Dragoon retains the defensive abilities of Youxia as well. As for what's new, the lance this Stance uses possesses incredible piercing power (above Gunner's bolts) and can fire dangerous energy blasts infused with his Jade Dragon's Flames at enemies in rapid succession. These beams can travel for dozens of meters and occur quite quickly, making them difficult to dodge if used one after another. Along with this, Erphtal possesses another ability unique to Dragoon: The tip rotates and twists the physical force Kai uses, causing it to possess a drill-like effect when used to stab or lunge. On top of everything else, Kai's fire is also more all-around powerful when used during his Dragoon Stance. The downsides to such a powerful transformation are increased energy consumption, physical exhaustion, and due to using his Armour of the Reborn King, possible significant drawbacks if not used properly (the armour will increase in weight drastically if he doesn't fight to the best of his ability and if he is going against his heroism).

Spoiler:
Armour of the Reborn King: Like any good warrior, Kai has access to a set of armour. This garb is known to resurface from the spirit of a true heir of Liu Bei, ancient Chinese warlord and eventual emperor of Shu Han. In dire situations Kai is able to summon this set of armour to replace whatever he happens to be wearing at the time, and can even be used in any Stance without incurring extra penalties. Consisting primarily of spiritually enhanced leather plate armour and regal clothing underneath, it was clearly designed in a bygone era. This characteristic is reinforced by the ornamental headpiece keeping his hair up in a traditional style. The pauldrons are also quite interesting as they are topped by metal caricatures of the upper half of Chinese dragons' heads. Overall from head to toe this outfit is a drastic departure from the green suit Kai is accustomed to.

In terms of abilities, the Armour of the Reborn King possesses a few. First and foremost it is incredibly durable, far more so than any of the weapons Kai gains access to by switching Stances. Individuals significantly more powerful than Kai may be able to damage it depending on how much force they put behind their blows, but for the most part he is usually more vulnerable to blunt force trauma from being thrown around or hit by a blast than suffering lacerations from sharp weapons. The downside to this is to reform such a durable outfit Kai is forced to expend a rather noticeable amount of energy. To make up for this fact the armour set possesses a unique passive ability: From the time Kai dons it to the second it is destroyed or removed, the Reborn King's armour constantly absorbs and purifies surrounding spiritual energies from all sources at a steady rate. This symbolizes the trust and resources placed into a nation's leader with the expectation said leader will use it to serve their people and land to the best of their ability. Eighty percent of this energy is used to maintain the armour so Kai doesn't have to dip into his own reserves to do so, and the remaining twenty goes directly to assist in powering his own abilities. Once purified, even the most negative of energy is harmless to Kai. In return Kai is expected to fight to the best of his ability or the set of armour will continuously increase in weight until eventually he is unable to even move while wearing it.

VII. Role Play Sample

»  Roleplay Sample:

Flickering lights from the muted television screen blanketed the room around it in a dull brightness, contrasting starkly with the darkness of the rest of the house. The silence belied the heaviness in the air as a man in his mid-thirties sat on leather couch which creaked with every slight movement. His brown eyes remained trained on the screen in front of him, watching the events unfolding without waking those sleeping in other rooms. The words scrolling across the bottom of the television seemed to have no meaning as the man couldn't comprehend what was happening in front of him. Could this be real? His thoughts remained jumbled as the unintelligible, silent screams of those depicted to him cried out.

As minutes passed Wei Yijun was able to refocus and concentrate on the events unfolding on the television before him. A terrorist attack had rocked the neighboring territory of Macau, killing dozens of people immediately and injuring hundreds more. Billowing clouds of black smoke rose from the fires still tearing through multiple administrative buildings in the most populated section of the region. Even with the advanced technology that existed in the twenty fourth century emergency workers were having trouble containing the destruction raging throughout the business and government sector of a city only a hundred miles from where Wei and his family lived.

Usually events like this, though troubling by their very nature, didn't worry the Chinese business owner currently sitting in his living room much. But this was close. Close to his store, his home, and most importantly his family. If something happened on the other side of the world, what does it matter? As long as his wife and son were safe, anything in America or Africa or wherever could happen and Wei wouldn't be bothered. Yet now, at twelve o'clock at night, and in his pajamas, Wei was shaken.

One of the few benefits of living under the Kokuryuteshi Empire was safety, but people were attacked in what he considered his back yard. It didn't matter that the people behind this violence were crazed insurgents because though their target was K-World, people just trying to live their lives were caught up in the nonsense too. What if next time it wasn't Macau, but mainland China itself? What if Zhuhai was attacked next? Would Wei luck out or would his own neighborhood be hit too? These were the thoughts running through his head at a mile a minute.

Wei dropped his head in frustration, covering his slim face with the hands he'd used to build his family and business and home from the ground up. Though his store, friends, and life was in China...his wife and son mattered more than all those things combined. If leaving was the only solution, where would they go? Wei stood and began pacing, walking back and forth in order to gather his thoughts, as flames continued to devastate and dance across the screen just a few meters away. Having to uproot his and his family's entire life would be difficult enough but if they ended up somewhere as uncertain as where they already were...Wei was going through all the major regions and countries on Earth, shooting down each for various reasons. Then it hit him. Karakura City.

If there was any place in the entire world where Wei could be absolutely sure those he loved would be safe, it was the sprawling metropolis of Karakura. The Japanese capital offered the best possible future, especially for his young son who was still just a child. His wife Li was Japanese and had family there too. Wei stopped pacing and just stood still for a moment. Was this really happening? Am I really going to do this...?.....Yes. They are what matters, they are all that matter. Steeling himself and his thoughts, Wei Yijun clicked the off button on the TV's remote control and made his way through the quiet darkness of his modest home and made for his bed where Li slept peacefully, now resolute in his plan. The troubles of the world didn't bother the sleeping woman in front of him. Staring down at his beautiful wife whom he'd loved since the moment they met, one more thought ran through Wei's head.

It can wait till tomorrow.
