» Background:

Karakura forest. Noon. This is the place where Zero awoke. The man stirred from his sleep, feeling slightly groggy still. Zero began to rise slowly out of the small bush that was hiding his body during his time of rest. He looked around and realized he had no idea how he got here nor where he was. He tried to retrace his steps to figure out how he go here and quickly found out that he had no recollection of his past at all. Slightly worried, he moved out of the bush to get a better view of his surroundings. Soon after he stepped out of the bush though, kicked something heavy on the ground. He glanced down and saw a large sword. Being curious, he picked up the sword by the hilt and lifted it up. The sword was rather light and seemed rather familiar. Soon, a sharp and painful headache hit him and brought him to his knees. His vision became hazy and the pain almost became overwhelming. Instantly, he was transported to a different place and the pain disappeared. The first thing he noticed was that he was in a desert. The next thing, was that there were two figures in the distance facing each other with what looked like weapons in their hand.

Unsure what to do, Zero began approaching the individuals. As he got closer, he was able to make more details. He noticed that the person on his right has a slim sword while the person on his left had a large sword. His attention began to focus more on the person on his left as he realized that the sword was similar to the one he saw when he awoke. He got closer and the person began to look very familiar to him. It was almost as if he knew the person like a childhood friend. As he drew even closer, the realization hit him. The person he had felt so familiar with, was in fact himself. Also the scene he had been witnessing was a memory of his past. Soon after this realization came, another headache brought him to his knees. This time, he was moved to a forest that was in flames.

Rising from his position, he saw his former self fighting the figure from the first memory. Sparks flew as their swords clashed with unnatural force and power. A few more clashes, and they both gained some distance from each other. What happened next, was a mystery because another headache came to him. Zero fell to the ground and, due to not being able to withstand the pain anymore, passed out.

He awoke again in the same spot at which he has initially received the series of painful headaches. He sat up and noticed that it was dark and the moonlight was shining through the trees. He turned toward the sword that was laying right next to him and picked it up and waited a bit to see if more headaches would come. When nothing arrived, he examined the sword for some kind of hint of his past. He examined the blade and the hilt but there was nothing on it. Finally realizing that there was nothing on the blade to help him with his past, he rose up with the blade in hand and stretched. It was at that moment that an idea came to him. He gripped the hilt with both hands and began to swing the blade in the air. He swung the sword a few times and he began to feel a sense of familiarity. With each swing, he grew increasingly comfortable with the sword. He felt like he's had the sword since he was a child. He turned towards the farthest tree and charged at it. His sword began to glow slightly as he charged. He swung the sword at the tree and sliced the tree in half. The blade's glow began to fade as he watched the tree fall. A memory hit him but this time without the headache. He was in front of an old house in a forest. The forest didn't seem like the one he was in because these ones had a different kind of tree. He heard footsteps inside the house and a man who looked to be in his mid 40s came out. The mysterious man had the same sword that Zero was just using to cut the tree in half. The mysterious man gave him a smile and said, "Ah right on time, Zero. Here. This is the sword that I promised all those years back that I would make for you." The man tossed the sword to Zero and he caught it by the hilt. He examined the blade a bit and marveled at the craftsmanship. Zero nodded toward the man with great approval on his face. The man smiled and said, "It's been 10 long years of training but you finally did it. Succeeding an old geezer like me." The man began to chuckle and Zero smiled a little at his old master's crack.

The flashback faded and he returned to reality. He closed his eyes and a small smile appeared on his face. He opened his eyes and realized that today had been a little taxing on his body. He found a nice spot with a tree to lean on and drove his sword into the ground, keeping it upright while slightly slanting to the right of him. He sat down and looked up toward the sky. The world faded away as he feel into a deep sleep for the night.
