Tsubine Zanifir von Zarkonheinz

The wind outside of the Sugiura's castle was bitterly cold, like a late-Autumn night. Of course, the night air and natural low temperatures of the area did not help the temperature. Of course, the large walls around the castle helped block out some of the wind. The tall, central spire of the castle half blocked the moon's crescent, but still shone in the moon's light. Clouds would occasionally pass over the half-cresent in the sky, darkening the entire city momentarily before the wind pushed the massive puff out of the way of the moon's light.

Tsubine von Zarkonheinz's figure stood out from the armor-clad knights with their pikes and axes. Their armor was all standard and did not stand out from one another. Their faces were covered by their helmets, giving them no humanizing features. Tsubine, on the other hand, wore no helm. His hair, white and triangular, contrasted with the light-orchid haori he wore over his dark grey curasse. In his left hand, one could not see a weapon. However, one of the most powerful blades in existence was there. Concealed under a compressed torrent of air, Tsubine's Sacred was definitely there, reading to strike.

As he approached the door, the knights in his path uncrossed their lances and the two massive wooden and stone doors crept apart. The sounds of a normally-busy lobby were now silenced except for the footsteps of the night cleaning crew, guards, and Tsubine. Out of all of those, the only ones that were not made by wooden sandals were Tsubine's. His metal grieves' smooth clanking was almost enough to make others around him stop and stare. However, Tsubine had no need to talk with anyone. No, his duty tonight was not to talk. In fact, his duty was never to talk; only to defend and cut.

Every door he passed through was opened hastily for him, as if everyone in the castle was expecting him. The squires saluted the highest knight as he passed by, and he did nothing but stare ahead, keeping his composure and ice-cold demeanor about him. The hallway he was in had no windows, but the lighting in the corridor was designed to mimic the lighting outside. If a cloud passed over the moon, the room would get darker. It was quite spectacular, as it was never completely dark in there, so one could see the beautiful masonry and artwork adorning the walls, ceiling, and floor.

At last, he reached the end of the hallway. It was a T-shaped intersection. However, there was a slight curve about it. Yes, this hall turned into a large circle around the hollow center of the spire. The glass doors ahead of him were the only ones he had to open himself, but Tsubine did not mind. The knight stepped into the outermost ring of the courtyard before him. Almost half a mile in diameter, the courtyard, only accessible by royalty and their guests, was decorated with small gardens, separated by a spiral-like white stone path. The small gardens were filled mainly with non-flowering plants, but the occasional red and white flower buds dotted the spiral. At the very center of the spiral, a small platform stood. It was not covered, but there was a small, elegantly-made table with a pair of chairs. However, one of the chairs was comforting its occupant.

A teacup in her hand and her legs crossed like a proper lady, the white-haired woman in the center of this garden stood out even more than the occasionally-dotted flowers. Her robes were white with a red outline, their colors matching the flowers one would see in the garden. Tsubine knew this figure all too well, especially her teacup. With another cup sitting across from her, his sister awaited on her brother's arrival. Misaiko Sugiura, the current Queen of the Sugiura, was no different than Tsubine when it came to mothers. Their father was different, but Tsubine saw no difference in her and Eira, his sister of the same father and mother.

Tsubine slowly followed the straight path leading to the platform, his sister still sitting there, occasionally taking a sip from her teacup. However, Tsubine noticed something else behind his sister's chair. Sitting elegantly on a stand made of ivory, a long, curved scabbard with its sword inside sat as if it were a museum exhibit. The sword Tsubine recognized. It was his sister's answer to Tsubine's own weapon. Her Sacred: Megamikaze. Tsubine only glanced twice at the sword, tightening his grip on the hidden scabbard of his own Sacred. Tsubine reached halfway from his sister's position before he decided to speak. Unlike normal, Tsubine's voice carried a bit of... kindness? No, it was more of respect than kind.

"It's a beautiful night tonight, isn't it my sister?"

"It's been too long since we've talked, though why have you called me here? It's not a normal occurance for you, the Queen, to make personal calls, especially for me to make a visit."

Tsubine continued to walk towards his sister. His normal scowl of an expression was more neutral now. In fact, it was a small smile. Reminiscing over the past was nothing but good for Tsubine. His sister, the mother of his ex-wife, was one of the few people he respected enough to feel comfortable around them. However, Tsubine's guard did not drop, even around her.

Brother and Sister: Duel of the Ancients [PRIVATE] Empty Re: Brother and Sister: Duel of the Ancients [PRIVATE]

Tue May 15, 2012 4:25 am

Once the man of the hour arrived within one of the many sanctuaries of the magnanimous queen, a small smile creased her beautiful lips as she greeted him upon arrival. This man, known as Tsubine Zanifir von Zarkonheinz, was originally an individual she thought of as a very close friend not because of positions, but because he was the first man who ever showed her daughter what it truly meant to love and cherish someone other than her family. Due to this sole fact alone, Misaiko told herself adamantly that she would meet the man and thank him for his successful efforts. Even before Misaiko found out the inevitable secret that this individual was her brother, she had always thought highly of him. Needless to say, even with this new found clarity, her respect and admiration for him never faltered. Both swordsman and honorable bodyguard, his sword has not once failed to cut down opposition with a single stroke.

Once the makeup of his body changed, he became an even greater warrior than even she could have imagined. His evolution was unimaginably breathtaking. As a fellow warrior and a swordsman following in the ways of Bushido, she admired the way he carried himself on the battlefield and when he served under their mother. No matter the adversity, he would always fight for her and Shimura even if it were at the cost of his life.

The beautiful jasmines, myrtles, and shrubs shined brilliantly within the moonlight. Misaiko enjoyed the appearance of flowers, enjoying their beauty and allure whenever she could. They were much like children, she mused. Their growth, needing water and love and care to survive, as well as one's full attention at every turn...yes they were indeed much like the bundles of joys that so enthralled Misaiko. Life in and of itself—was beautiful beyond all compare. The way women, including herself, were able to create life with the help of a faithful man and bring that life into existence; watch that life grow into something legendary and revered; to be there during the most happiest times of their lives, was a thing no less than magical.

Holding the venerable knight before her with that heavenly gaze she possessed, the queen decided to voice her reasons for inviting him to her sanctuary.

"Indeed, the beauty of night and its magnificence knows no equal. "

There was no mistaking the tone in her own words, they were always compassionate and welcoming, loving and peaceful. Taking a small gulp from her well-ornamented tea cup, the Goddess of Wind continued to keep her eyes locked on Tsubine.

Even if it was a mere meeting, he was nevertheless ready for battle, like a tiger ready to strike his prey. This suited her just fine, actually. As Tsubine pointed out, inviting him here for tea and pleasant delectation's was not her sole intention. On the contrary, she invited him here to test their skills as warriors.

"Ah, it appears you've seen through my rouse," she said with a lighthearted smile as she casually shrugged off any suspicion he possessed at the outset. "It is indeed a rarity for me to personally invite people to my quarters. That being said, you are my brother. I would invite you without a words notice at any given time. Forgive me for my peculiarity, but being the ruler of such a vast race of people can be quite unnerving, I rarely find time to do anything for my own satisfaction these days. Such is the life of a queen, I suppose. " In spite of the negativity in her words, her tone remained jocund. Leaning back in her chair ever so sightly, the white haired woman finished off the rest of her tea, taking her last gulp as the warm liquid graced her throat one last time. Removing herself from the chair which she had been occupying since his arrival, Misaiko directed her attention the sword ensconced within its sheath lying upon the ivory stand; the vaunted Nodachi she always carried into battle, Megamikaze. Tempered and forged with ancient formulas lost over time, this sword has withstood the vigor and use of battle many times, and in each, this blade was able to bring about victory with its amazing abilities. As its name implied, it was a sword that could conjure up powerful gales, tempestuous hurricanes, and tumultuous tornadoes, each capable of taking down empires with its supreme might.

"I called you here to request a duel. Word has it, that your swordsmanship is second to none. A weapon of precision that cuts down everything in its path, that is what the few who have been able to perceive you on the battlefield has described it as. It would be an honor to face one such as you in a contest of blades. I have searched far and wide to find those who make my sword tremble with anticipation. " Misaiko once again, resumed gazing at her brother as she smiled warmly, awaiting his answer. "Do you yield or accept?"

Tsubine Zanifir von Zarkonheinz

Misaiko's voice was so silk-like, he could almost feel its softness wrapping around his body. However, her words were just that, only words. Tsubine reached the bottom step of the platform, but did not go any higher. He felt he was high enough royalty-wise to be on the same ground as his sister, but in his style... having the low ground was better. In Kendo, having gravity on your side worked to strengthen strikes. However, Iaido was built on a different principle. Where the best strikes in Kendo were from the user's own body, the best strikes in Iaido revolved around the attacks of the enemy. However, Tsubine had perfected the art of striking in counter to be a pre-emptive strike.

Tsubine listened to her request as she placed her hand atop the scabbard, running her fingertip across the length of the beautiful coating. She asked for a duel. A duel. Tsubine's style was not there to injure or to capture. No, it was meant to kill in a single, swift, and powerful strike. Even if it weren't a single strike, Tsubine could easily attack multiple times in the same manner within two or three seconds. But a duel with his sister? Tsubine hesitated a bit until she said that she knew of his style to an extent. Thus, she knew the risks and he wouldn't have to explain them.

"My sister Misaiko... It would be my pleasure and honor to duel you. However..."

The grey-blue eyes of the knight never showed an ounce of mercy or kindness. His mouth and the rest of his face may have, but his eyes simply stared straight into Misaiko. His gaze was capable of wooing women, but he knew it'd have no effect on his sister. It wasn't like he wanted it to either. No, with her proposition, Tsubine didn't want a single thing to get in the way of a full-on duel.

Tsubine's gauntlets slightly rattled as his left arm lifted itself and the air-covered sword to chest-height. The torrent of wind began to calm and the once-invisible scabbard showed itself like the morning dawn peeping through curtains. The cross-stitching style of the scabbard's coating stood out against Tsubine's light-colored outfit. The black gauntlets and the scabbard were the only thing that really matched. The dark-colored scabbard's length trumped even Megamikaze's length. However, the two swords were almost a complete contrast in color. The double hilt guard gave Tsubine's Claíomh Solais an interesting appearance. The handle was large enough to be held by three hands, but Tsubine only needed one hand's length.

"...do not think I will hold back for any reason. I do have one stipulation as to this duel. The farthest we can release is our Joushou. I want this to be a duel of swords, not of powers."

Tsubine brought the sword back, his hand gripping the handle for his most deadly weapon. His body twisted, his left leg planted behind him, using his right leg to pivot on a moment's notice. If she struck from above, Tsubine could counter. If she struck from the front, Tsubine could counter easily. If she struck from the side, Tsubine would be in the perfect position. The centrifugal force of him rotating would be enough to push her back slightly, giving him enough time to put her on the defense. However, Tsubine wasn't interested in a monopoly of offense. For him to use his iaido skill to the maximum strength, Tsubine needed for there to be an equilibrium of offense and defense.

"Whenever you are ready, my sister."

"I wouldn't have it any other way, my dear brother." Giving her the answer she had been anticipating for, Tsubine accepted her request. The conditions would suit her just fine in this battle, a duel of blades was exactly what her heart desired more than anything else on this ethereal night. Many other warriors would probably find this garden unsuitable to fight in, but with the way all of the flowers were positioned, any possible shockwaves that could emit from clashing steel would only do minor damage. There was nothing to impede her movements, no extraneous thoughts to break her concentration. Removing the long Nodachi from its ivory stand, Misaiko turned ever so slightly so that now - the two were facing each other directly. She placed the blade by her waist, exhaling deeply as she readied herself for battle. Her muscles were completely relaxed, void of all tension and stress. In swordsmanship, any warrior worth the name knows that it is from a relaxed stance that a swordsman can exert their greatest power.

If you allow meaningless thoughts to cloud your mind or breath too hard, allowing yourself to feel adrenaline from the heat of battle, you can easily fall prey to the strike of your opponent. Misaiko knew this irrefutable skill, it was as much knowledge as it was breathing. Blade in hand, she took three steps forward to close the distance between the two, essaying to keep him within her vision at all times during this battle. From what she was told, his Iaido was as unpredictable as the noon moon. A sword that could strike from anywhere, at any angle, with terrible, godlike speed. Indeed, he would be the most daunting swordsman Misaiko had faced in decades. Nevertheless, her heart burned with the anticipation of battle. Misaiko's swordsmanship was on a level beyond many. Her expertise in the art of the sword had earned her much acclaim.

Like the man in his readied stance, standing before her with sword ready to draw, she too was a master in the art of the illustrious draw and slash. Fighting a swordsman with such a style was a task no less than difficult. Unlike Kendo, whereby swordsman clearly perceive their enemy's blades, Iaido depends on focusing on the enemy's blade while its ensconced within its sheath. First of all, even this task is hard to accomplish due to the fact that one can only guess the likely length of their enemy's sword. Even at this moment, Misaiko could only come up with a guesstimate of brother's weapon. Therein lies the difficulty of defeating a readied warrior with the draw and slash at his disposal. What is the length of their blade? Where will the weapon strike from? Should you wait for him to strike first? Charge in, hoping to attack faster than he can draw his blade? In order to defeat such swordsmen, one had to steel their mind and seize the minute opportunity when it presented itself.

...Either way, defeating an opponent who fights with such a style is a truly difficult step to overcome. When faced with such enemies, you can only wait for when you believe the time to be ripe - and even then, that will not grasp victory. What you think may be a chance at victory could spell your death quicker than a flash of light appearing before your vision. With these factors in mind, what would the Goddess of wind employ from her battle repertoire? As a legendary swordsman, she was equally versed in Kendo, capable of executing two handed strikes with peerless precision and extreme velocity, rendering her opponents defenses futile. That said, would she able to gauge the length of Tsubine's blade? Spreading her legs slightly, she estimates the distance between the two.

―――5 paces.

It is a distance that she can close in a single instant. But can she catch the minute gap in between his attacks? If her slash fails to connect, can she defend herself from his counter strike? Misaiko had to tread carefully, lest she find herself suffering an early loss. That said, her thoughts have gone on long enough. The time for battle is now. Whatever happens will ultimately come down to who can strike the fastest, of who can catch the small holes between his enemy's attack.

With a sharp inhalation, she is ready for battle. Placing her left foot before the right, Misaiko bends her left knee in preparation for her strike. With her right hand surrounding the sheath of her Nodachi, the goddess explodes into motion. If Tsubine's Iaido is that which kills in a single instant, then Misaiko's speed is like that of a mighty bird who soars elegantly through the sky with wings that can take them to unimaginable heights. The moment she took off, she disappeared in a flash, leaving no traces of a spiritual signature behind.

The next moment, however, she appeared before Tsubine, with the white sleeves of her dress shirt fluttering like the wings of an elegant swan. At the same time, her sword comes crashing down with indomitable speed and fury. It is a downward diagonal slash directed at his torso. This was half-serious attack, of course. To be truthful, this first strike was meant to test the extents of his Iaido prowess, rather than take victory at the outset of the battle. Now she would finally see what made this man so revered among the many soldiers that uttered and praised his name.

Tsubine Zanifir von Zarkonheinz

Misaiko's body was completely free. If one were to give her an elemental sign, it would be air. Of course, Megamikaze's name and abilities exemplified that sign. Tsubine's sign would be the illustrious fifth element, the void. Tsubine's body's stance appeared to counter Misaiko's free stance. Tsubine's grip on his sword tightened slightly as she passed the table on the platform.

Normally, having ones body free of all tension would be the best stance for a strike. It allowed flexibility a rigid stance would not, and could not. One would think that Tsubine's wide, low stance was extremely rigid and entirely based around striking the area directly ahead of him. However, Tsubine's stance was anything but rigid. The wide leg spread made it possible for Tsubine to charge, retreat, strafe to the side, jump, or crouch in a moment's notice. The way his arms were positioned, he could use the dense metal of Claíomh Solais's scabbard to defend from an attack from the left or behind while using his right hand and leg to pivot to counter. Tsubine had what he called an absolute defense with this stance.

His sister, in all her calmness, only slightly spread her legs. To an untrained swordsman, the eyes would think that she's about to charge. Thus, the untrained swordsman would prepare for a head-on ground-level assault. However, to one that practices the art of Iaijutsu daily, the eyes knew that she was about to leap. As stated before, Kendo was the most useful when striking from above. However, Iaido was equally-as-dangerous from above. The strikes would have their climax not at the midpoint of the slash, but right before. However, the return of the sword to its sheath was the most difficult part of using Iaido from above.

As she disappeared, Tsubine could only focus his sixth sense on where she'd strike. No, this was not premonition. Tsubine's sixth sense was based on a warrior's intuition. Now, this was not just from reading books or his experience. The sixth sense Tsubine relied on another factor, the opponent. Misaiko, a fellow follower in the ways of the sword, would not perform a rear assault on him. Instead, she would attack from the side or front first. From which direction of either, Tsubine did not know. But that did not matter, as he was assured a counter, no matter where she came from.

And then, she appeared. Right as Tsubine had predicted, a head-on assault from above. However, her slash was not was not in Tsubine's prediction. Rather, Tsubine chose not to predict the direction. Instead, he left his right leg and waist were left free. Why? If Tsubine had shifted either part of his body to either side, he would have decreased his chance to counter from the opposite direction. Tsubine's false positioning of rigidity was at its true neutral point for a frontal assault. The beautiful maiden's sword, passing from her right side over to her left at a 30° angle, was being driven straight into his defense zone. In fact, she was heading towards the core of it. However, even a novice Iaijutsu practitioner knew not to go for the torso, but for the head. But, that did not mean that a strike to the torso would be a waste. Tsubine saw through her trick, but he would not disappoint his sister.

Remaining still until the moment her sword was about halfway from completion, Tsubine saw his sister's movements. Her blade, reaching the halfway point from climax, was met with another material much like its own. The other material, in the fraction of a second, halted the advance of Megamikaze. Within the same timeframe, the other material pushed the Queen's Sacred back towards her, but only slightly. By the time that was over, the identity of the material, seen by those who could see the quick movements, was obvious. Reacting with no time to spare, Tsubine had drawn Claíomh Solais repelled his sister's blade, and re-sheathed the deadly blade.

"I would expect no less skill from you."

Now, resheathing did not mean Tsubine was done. To put it in terms of a firearm, Tsubine was an assault rifle capable of both fully-automatic and semi-automatic firing. Right now, Tsubine was in semi-automatic mode. Every time he resheathed, another bullet was stored inside the chamber until he was ready to fire again. In fully-automatic, Tsubine would be able to strike without resheathing. It was disadvantageous for Tsubine to do this, but it would allow him to multiple strikes at within microseconds of one another.

Calculating where she'd land, Tsubine side-stepped slightly to the left. The obvious thing in that situation to do would be to side-step to the right. Her side had no weapon, so it woud be easier to strike, no? Wrong. In fact, doing so would only set onesself up to be attacked with both centrifugal and gravitational force by her landing and pivoting. Tsubine stepped to the left because her outstretched arm was at its weakest. She could not do a full-strength strike without re-sheathing completely, putting her at a disadvantage for Tsubine, whose sword was already re-sheathed, ready to fire.

As she fell closer to the ground, Tsubine's thumbs sprang into action. The hammer slid forward, hitting the bullet. The sword's blade shot out of the scabbard with more force than before. This strike, unlike the other, was not meant to counter. This strike was meant to strike at her shoulder-level. If this were a fight to the death, the anticipated striking area would cut the the lungs' tops off, as well as disconnecting the heart from the head. Normally in Iaijutsu, the idea was to cut off the head. However, different style modified this principle. That was just foolish. Teachings are not what needs to be modified. No, the user must master the style and apply it to battle however he or she sees fit. That is what Tsubine had done. From Tsubine's left, the blade sought out her head. Tsubine was sure that this would not be the deciding blow. However, he was also sure it could be when placed against an opponent that was not his sister.

As expected, Misaiko’s sword did not reach his torso. At the zenith of her arrival, the man had already prepared to counter, re-sheath, and execute his own attack in a single fluid motion. It was though his sword was an extension of his body, reacting with him in tandem. The normal opponent would’ve likely been deterred. However, Misaiko was nevertheless filled with satisfaction that her brother possessed such talent. There wasn’t a single ounce of hesitation and his heart, and it was undoubtedly pristine that he indeed has no intention of holding back. A true duel can only be conducted when both warriors have resolved to cross blades, and have an adept knowledge in knowing how to produce variants of their techniques during battles.

If this was a true life or death battle, Tsubine could’ve easily dealt her a mighty blow. However, he used the minimum amount necessary to not only counter, but deviate Misaiko’s next plan of attack from coming into fruition. This man is quite good! Deep within the confines of her heart, the joy of battle erupted like magma from a volcano that had lain inviolate for decades. Rarely if ever was she able to experience even a modicum of beatitude in the contests of swordsmanship. Sword combat had died out in most parts of the world, and no matter how hard she tried, not a single man was worthy enough of rivaling her in a contest of swords. However, there was one. Tsubine Von Zarkonheiz, was indeed worthy of possessing the title of a swordsman who could not only rival her, but even outclass the goddess of wind.

As the warrior came charging in with his sword poised at the ready, he had effectively sealed off Misaiko’s plan of attack. In order for a Iaido practicioner to perform their techniques properly, the body must have not only balance, but proper body control and a steady footing on-ground. And the fact that this man is attacking her before her feet has even half landed on the ground; he is one who knows his strategy well. From the corner of her eye, she could perceive him unsheathing his blade and executing a powerful head strike all in one flash. This astonishing speed and peerless control only furthered how proud she was to be facing such a master of the draw and slash. Her right hand appeared to hang limply, dangling with the sword ensconced within her fingers. For any other swordsman, this would’ve surely spelled about their certain end, however…

The woman Tsubine was facing now was a warrior who had fought through many battles, survived through unthinkable battles, and an individual who was use to performing in unfavorable positions. She lived and breathed off of such confrontation, and answered the call many times in the past. Today would only be a repeat of that peerless miracle. Instead of resheathing as Tsubine most likely thought she would, she kept her sword unsheathed and using the amazing, godlike dexterity of her arm, she executed an upwards strike in order to deflect Tsubine’s blade, thereby distorting his attack ever so slightly. As unorthodox as it was, she felt that to shy away by using an escape maneuver would be dishonorable to this venerable warrior. Her feet were able to land perfectly, as she kept her sword from allowing the man to finish his own strike. She could not perform a counterattack, however. In fact, if she dropped her defenses even once, his sword would continue its journey towards her and this duel would be as good as finished.

Using quick thinking and her nimble body, the girl raised both of her feet and brought them towards Tsubine’s abdomen, kicking off of his chest in order to gain a favorable distance away and come up with countermeasures in order to find a more suitable way to get through is defenses. Although it was risky, Misaiko’s speed allowed her to complete the jump and push in a single, fluid motion, as though she had performed such feats countless times before. This allowed her to extend the distance between them to 20 paces. Since it was only a short jump, it only allowed her to land a short distance away from Tsubine. This worked to her advantage, however. If she had performed a far more powerful jump with more force behind her legs, it would’ve caused her body to fly rather than land, meaning that Tsubine would ultimately catch her in the same position he did the first time – and although she was confident enough to survive the first attack, she doubted highly that he would allow her to perform the same trick again.

At this point, only two options were laid out before her. She could re-sheath her blade and seek out possible flaws in his defenses, or follow another route and employ the combination of Iaido and Kendo. Although it was evident that her Iai was peerless, she was just as masterful in the art of Kenjutsu, and could easily perform two handed strikes with unfathomable strength for someone of her size and stature. In all likelihood, Tsubine probably shrugged off her push-off and re-sheathed his own blade, preparing to defend and attack once again. If that was truly what this man’s style had culminated in…. Then the answer was clear. She would meet his offense and defense with her own. With her plans clear and her mind ready, the girl decided to take the defensive route. She brought both her right hand and her left hand around Megamikaze, assuming the middle-level posture known as Chudan. Her hands were held in front of her waist, with the tip of her blade pointing towards Tsubine like a silver arrow sign.

In Kenjutsu, Chudan-no-Kamae allows for the practitioner to balance both attack and defense. It used generally used as the first stance for beginners to learn the correct striking distance, issoku-itto-no-maai. Although Jodan would’ve served her as equally well, it would’ve left an extreme hole in her defenses; an attack from the rear. If she performs a strike against him from the Jodan-no-kamae, her body would be unable to turn to the rear and prevent a strike from behind. Knowing that this man’s speed was as excellent as his swordsmanship, this would be a fatal move. On the other hand, a Chudan posture not only allows her to thrust, but thanks to her superhuman dexterity, she could easily execute a strike to the right or left by simply turning her wrists ever so slightly.

Furthermore, if his intent was still to strike her from behind she could use her natural speed to turn in an instant, and block a strike from the rear. In other words, her defense was perfect. However, she took precautious measures as well as keeping her gaze focused on this warrior. She knew that his skill rivaled that of hers, knew that he could easily come up with his own countermeasures and catch her at unawares. This stance was intended to keep that conclusion from becoming a reality. However, imperceptible to Tsubine, she took this stance one step further by applying the four chances in Kendo and Iai into her mind.

In swordsmanship, when fighting against any opponent, there are three chances that arrive within the midst of mortal combat. Those four chances are sen-no-sen, sen, sen-no-go, and go-no-sen. Sen-no-sen occurs when the enemy is unprepared, surprised, or is otherwise showing a clear opening. Sen is when the opponent is about to attack, when he has focused his mind and body on offense and is therefore unable to defend. Sen-no-go is when the enemy is in the middle of his attack and has no way to protect himself. Go-no-sen, the final chance, arrives after defending against the enemy's attack, in the moment of vulnerability before he recovers. Out of these four, it is Go-no-sen that Misaiko will bring to bear against Tsubine. With her mind at the ready, and her body poised to defend and attack, Misaiko prepares to meet Tsubine’s next strike on equal terms.

Tsubine Zanifir von Zarkonheinz

The exhiliration of this duel began coursing through Tsubine's veins. He stood in awe for once. No, he was not surprised with how she could deflect his blade. That was almost expected. Instead, that move was calculated. As soon as she had hit the ground, her defenses were sealed. However, her offense was now limited. While it is true that an Iai practicioner's offense was greatest on the ground, that is not necessarily true all of the time. The best place to combat an Iai practioner was where they are least comfortable. Tsubine knew she was most comfortable in her own element: the air, so he had to force her to the opposite.

Again, her deflecting his strike was calculated. It was predicted. She landed firmly, which would limit her options. Where she could operate in 360 degrees in air, she was limited to 180 on land. Tsubine was not surprised by her doing that, no. He was surprised that she increased the distance. For a swordsman, being outside of the range of the opponent's sword is both a godsend and a curse. For the former, the opponent has to come to you to strike. The latter is due to that you have to come to the opponent to strike. It becomes a duel of patience... and wits.

Tsubine had set the limitations to Joushou, the first form of the Sugiura. No form after it could be used. Tsubine had arranged this because of his ace in the hole. Tsubine placed one foot forward again, bringing his body back to his original stance. His hand tightly gripped his sword. He stared at his sister's eyes. However, he was not allowing her to return the stare. The air grew still. The night grew silent. His eyes flashed golden.

Tsubine knew the stance she took, as he too was a master is Kenjutsu. Chodan, a stance of many applicabilities. There is one flaw to this stance. It is not focused. Of course it requires immense focus, but the many applicabilities make the stance incredibly loose. It could only do so much for one direction because of how neutral the stance was. She had a perfect defense because of this, to an extent. However, any shield can be shattered. The flaw was not the stance, honestly. The flaw that he was still fighting a living, breathing, creature.

Tsubine's legs began to dissipate. Rather, his shins became invisible. It one were to look at them, one could only see a swirling torrent. However, he was keeping her attention on his face and sword. A switch clicked in his mind. Gears whirred. His attack was coming. As stated above, the worst place to combat an Iai user was where they are most comfortable. If Misaiko's was the air, Tsubine's would be moving. As long as Tsubine is moving, he can react. He cleared his mind. He may be staring into her eyes, but his mind was focused on every inch of her body. The slightest movement could show him what he needed to do or not do. Everything was tense right now, but it would not last long.
"You are living up to your titles, Wind Goddess. As swift as an autumn gale, yet as elegant as a spring breeze. It's quite obvious why they gave you that title."

However, his wind rant was slightly ironic. Tsubine's lower legs were now both completely invisible to the naked eye. He did not blink. His pupils did not narrow. He did not move any. No, he suddenly vanished. Behind him a cloud of rubble and dust shot from where his rear foot was. However, Tsubine did not vanish. He did not use a teleporation technique either. Tsubine had used his ace in the hole: a special ability only those who could wield a Holy Sacred could perform. Its name? Strike Air•Hammer of the Wind King.

The ability coated a part of the user's body, or more commonly their sword, in a condensed air pocket. Strike Air is an ability of a Holy Sacred's special ability: Invisible Air•Bounded Field of the Wind King. It is made up of multiple layers of wind compressed into super-high pressure air with a massive amount of reiatsu, which distorts the refraction of light and renders what is inside completely invisible. Tsubine has mastered this technique, allowing him to coat parts of his body in this deadly field of wind. However, there is one interesting quality about the wind inside. Unless one can break through the reiatsu of the wielder, the wind can not be tampered with. The reiatsu keeps the wind swirling around whatever the wielder wants. And thus, Misaiko could not control this tightly-bound wind in her current form.

What Tsubine had done was used his rear foot's Strike Air to accelerate him at supersonic speeds towards his sister. Where he could cover 10 steps in a long stride, he now could cover 30 in that same amount of time. However, Tsubine was also faced with one thing, her sword. Right? Wrong. Tsubine's stance allowed him to slightly deviate from a straight line. Thus, he could easily pass by her sword. However, Tsubine was not going to try to attack her too seriously. He was moving too fast for an effective strike with his sword, so as he approached her, he brought his scabbard around. He aimed it towards his sister's ribcage's side. The momentum would crack them, and his speed was quite impressive. However, Tsubine knew neither would guarantee a hit.

Thus, phase two was initiated. Tsubine had only used one of the two Strike Airs. After his scabbard swung, he released the other. At a range of where he could see the pores of his sister's beautiful skin, he could not move forward and a retreat to the rear or side was suicidal. There was only one place he could go: above. And so, his right leg's Strike Air uncondensed, creating a mild shockwave as he shot at least thirty paces above her. The switch that clicked before was now in effect. Doing a front-flip, he faced his sister on the ground once more. His sword now became coated in the same layered destruction as his legs were. Not the scabbard, but the sword itself.
Once again, the hammer pulled back and shot forward. The firing pin struck the bullet and Tsubine's sword launched out. Of course, the blade would not reach her. As the tip of the blade exited the barrel of the scabbard, Tsubine released the torrent of destruction down upon his sister. The larger burst of wind from this Strike Air would not be damaging to her, but rather would serve as another reason for her to change stances. Tsubine had to first see what his sister could do, no?

Misaiko sucked in the air around her environment, inhaling in deep measured breaths as she anticipated Tsubine’s next attack. This was wholly different from almost any confrontation of blades she had fought in her entire life. His skills were unreadable, like the eye of a perfect storm that could strike at any moment. No words could describe how thankful she was, facing an opponent whose swordsmanship was second nature. She was beyond impressed. Their swordfight up until this point could be considered a game of chess. Each move was calculated with precision, and a defense was prepared to counter that move. Both took into account their opponents mannerisms and their martial skill.

When one went in for the attack, the other prepared a countermeasure, causing the attacker to return to the position of defender. Indeed, this battle was like no other and it’s like will never be realized again. On this day, two masters of the sword do battle, giving way to the passion of honor in their heart. As Misaiko continued to hold her stance of applicability, she could not help but reply to Tsubine’s heartfelt words. “Oh? I am unworthy of your flattery. Compared to you, a man whose body is like a gun ready to fire and reload at a moment’s notice, I am but a feather before such peerless skill. “ Perhaps Misaiko was attempting modesty; one could never be too sure with this enigmatic queen. Nevertheless, in her heart, this compliment was most true. When was the last time her heart had burned with such ardent enthusiasm?

Tasting anew the passion of a spar fought for the sake of honor and fair-play, Misaiko prepared to meet Tsubine’s next attacks head-on. Where would his next strike come from? Would it be predictable or would it betray her expectations, as he had done so many times during the outset of their battle? A small smirk crossed her lips, as her grip on Megamikaze tightened in preparation. In moments, Tsubine exploded into motion, utilizing his skillful application of Strike air to propel himself towards Misaiko in a single stride. Misaiko opened her eyes ever wider, straining to catch the white haired devil within her field of vision. As her mind had been engrossed with his next move, the masterful knight once again caught her unawares. Instead of utilizing his foot-speed, he covered the distance between the two in the space of a single acceleration. Coming upon her from the side was Tsubine’s sheath. Although it was unconventional and did not present as many skills that could be performed with the sword, a sheath strike was by no means ineffective. On the contrary, if a swordsman possessed the tools necessary to use the momentum to his advantage, a strike from a sheath could be just as deadly as a strike from the sword. In some cases, an opponent would die not from blood loss, but from the devastating impact of blunt force against their body. Such blunt attacks could result in broken bones, ruptured organs, and shattered ribs.

Misaiko furrowed her brow, bringing her best efforts to bear as she carefully deduced whether or not this was a feint in order for a much more marvelous attack. In what seemed like bullet time in this woman’s peripheral vision, she started to contemplate a strategy most suitable for this confrontation. She could allow that sheath to land a perfect blow, suffer extreme pain, and step in for a decisive strike. A possible shuffle of the feet would take her out of the range of the sheath, but would be meaningless due to his momentum. Leaping was a luxury that could not be afforded to her. The aerial standpoint would only lessen her chances of victory. And due to the speed of his air-enhanced charge, a side step to the left or right side was nigh-impossible to perform with the stance she had resigned herself to moments before his attack.

In the end, there was only one answer placed in front of Misaiko. Entrust your soul to the blade. Let it be your guide. Charge through all opposition and cut through the enemy before you. The only thing you can do now is….move forward! With that mental epiphany placed deeply in her heart, Misaiko stepped forward, thrusting her blade toward Tsubine….only for him to dash her hopes once again. As Misaiko should’ve expected, Tsubine never intended to strike her with his sheath, instead using the propulsion of strike air to his advantage. His body was propelled upwards while Misaiko looked on, mouth slightly agape, as she saw him perform an aerial front-flip. During his flight, he executed a slash. That was strange. How could he possibly attack from such a distance….? “….!?” Misaiko gasped, staring upon the torrent of destruction coming towards her with relentless fury. His commendable use of strategy had indeed caught the goddess of wind off guard. Never in her wildest imaginations would she have expected that a warrior could perform such a feat without breaking so much as a sweat. This powerful gale of wind would’ve probably posed a threat to the normal warrior…. However – the attack was targeted upon a fair maiden who, as far as the kingdom was concerned, was a deity of the wind in human form. As she had done once before, she didn’t intend on dodging the attack.

Rather, as the tumultuous gale came crashing towards her, Misaiko stepped through the torrent of wind, executing ten strikes in the space of a single stroke, using light-speed agility to create a momentum force that can cause this attack to dissipate. She concentrated on ten spots of the wind spiral, cutting across each with such velocity that in the next moment, the attack had been completely eradicated. What had originally been an attack capable of crushing a small army was now reduced to a gentle breeze that caused Misaiko’s hair to flutter through the air. “….Ha….” Misaiko took deep measured breaths to regain her composure. Had she hesitated for even a second…. This battle would’ve been settled. Not only could he execute Iai strikes capable of leaving unidentifiable corpses in his wake, he even possessed the ability to utilize wind with expertise rivaling her own. A small cut opened up on the side of Misaiko’s left cheek. “….Hpmh, it would seem as though my attempt at showmanship resulted in a cut across my cheek. “ This only served as a testament to her awe at Tsubine’s impressive skills. However, her pride would not allow him to show her up. This time around she will go on the offensive. With a sharp inhalation, Misaiko initiates the first phase of her attack.

Charging towards him in a straight out run, Misaiko activated Fumeiko, a flash step ability that distorts the opponent’s sense of range. It does this by allowing the user to concentrate reaitsu around their heels, thereby further increasing their overall stride by pushing the Reaitsu at incredible speeds, giving off the allusion that the user is manipulating time and space. It then creates multiple afterimages in the practitioner’s wake, and each acts as a makeshift clone that can cause the opponent to become confused and disoriented as to who his true attacker really is. What makes this deceptive technique even more difficult to counter is that each afterimage emulates the user’s respective motions, allowing them to blink their eyes and attack as one whenever necessary.

Coupling this alongside Misaiko’s natural speed which far surpassed even those of her own race, the technique can achieve perfection. As Misaiko continued her charge, various afterimages begin to appear in her wake with the total numbered at twenty. At this point, she could’ve executed a group attack, forcing him to strike at each and every afterimage with a strong attack, which would easily cause them to disappear into thin air as they were composed of nothing more than spiritual particle – or – she could betray his expectation’s and perform a completely unpredictable attack. The sky is the limit, she thought with a benevolent smirk, as she leaped within the air, causing the makeshift clones to follow suit. As she did this, she soared toward Tsubine at a maximum speed of 350 mph, thereby increasing the kinetic force of her attack. And as though it were the most surprising – some may say unexpected – thing in the world, Misaiko executed one of her most advanced sword techniques – the Kuzu Ryusen. The Kuzu-ryusen or “nine headed dragon” as it is called, was a technique that utilized her speed to its fullest extent.

Attacking the fundamental targets of swordsmanship - Head, shoulders, wrists, both sides of the waist, between the legs, and the chest - all at the same time, the swordsman’s intention is to render any and each of the opponent’s possible countermeasures meaningless. As each targeted point of the body makes up one’s guarding stance, defending against it is virtually impossible. It is difficult to guess where the strikes will come from, let alone defend against them successfully. And knowing that this alone would not guarantee a surprised Tsubine, Misaiko sprung her well-planned trap. As each clone diverged from Misaiko during the aerial attack, they too emulated every motion of their leader which means….not only was Tsubine faced with the true goddess of wind executing this technique, but her makeshift teammates as well. Faced with such an advanced technique before him, how would the white-haired devil act in reply to her sister’s fervor?

Tsubine Zanifir von Zarkonheinz

Tsubine could barely see the blood on her cheek. Yes, the attack he had so well-prepared was nothing to her. He should have realized this. Using a wind attack against the Goddess of the Wind may not have been the best idea, but it worked. He got her to get on the offensive. This is exactly what he needed. Most people would try to stay on the offense. However, Tsubine was not most people, or at least not in this situation. He liked being on the offense, but it was better to be neither. To be one with the flow of battle is to neither be on the attack or on the defense. It is a fluctuating movement that was a true balance. However, the speed of the battle put getting on that line in a difficult position.

Tsubine could barely see that blood. It was not much, but it was still enough to confirm a partial hit. A partial hit was still a hit. The first one was his. He knew that she'd not hold back now. He knew her pride would not let him get another hit in so easily. And this was bad. Tsubine was mid-air, his gun unloaded. He manipulated the reiatsu around his feet to slow his descent, but he still fell towards her. This meant Tsubine would be increasing his velocity while her potential energy increased. And despite what it may seem, Tsubine's body had taken its toll with that last Strike Air. He had taken at least a 50-G turn. Anyone less than Tsubine would have had their bones turn to mush or at least blacked out. However, Tsubine diverted all of the G force to that last Strike Air, which did its job. Now, Tsubine would have to let his bones rest before using another Strike Air... which put him at a disadvantage. She was faster than he was in terms of actual speed, but he had one thing on her: draw speed. Tsubine's draw speed was unmatched, but he could only do damage with his sword in its sheath.

And then, she changed from defense to offense. She darted upwards toward him... but something was off. She seemed she was... closer? No, farther off? No, Tsubine could not tell if she was too close or too far away. He had not heard of this technique. However, he still had his own Shunpo techniques up his sleeve. And then Tsubine noticed it. Afterimages. He could not count them all. Tsubine's eyes narrowed. He tried not to subconciously activate his eyes. If he did, he could tell which was the real one... but it would take all of the honor out of this battle. And so, he continued the movement to place his sword back in the scabbard, but only halfway.

The reason for his style to do this was not just because it would make it easier to draw, but because he could easily sheath it once more in a single movement, creating a surprising shield. And with the shield, it would deflect momentum, allowing Tsubine to regain his control. Once Tsubine's hand was on the trigger of this gun, it would be back to a duel. Yes, this was becoming quite interesting for the white-haired knight. But no matter what she pulled, this afterimage thing wouldn't work against him. Unbeknownst to anyone except those whom he has killed that had a high level of Shunpo or Sonido, Tsubine had a red king for afterimages.

Kuchikukan Tenson. An ability that uses afterimages and non-biological clones' own reiatsu trace to cause them to dissipate. However, Tsubine would not use this just yet. He needed to hold onto it. This ability Misaiko used was obviously something of hers. Something only people of her caliber could use. But, the afterimage idea was quite similar to one of Tsubine's variants of Shunpo. Then, she did it. Tsubine saw the afterimages and the real Misaiko (though which was which, he did not know) do something with their sword. He did not recognize the stance, mainly due to the fact it was midair. But, that did not matter to him. He had the perfect counter, as long as he could do it in the right time frame.

The blades hit. The steel of the real Misaiko's blade clashed upon nothing. Yes, Tsubine had used his ultimate trick for Shunpo. Utsusemi Tachinaori. Yes, an ability very few had even seen. It looked like Tsubine was still standing there when the blade finally came down on him. However, he was not. It was a single, concentrated afterimage. Tsubine had used the afterimage effect against her. Yet this wasn't even the end.

Tsubine was once feared because of his Shunpo back in his days as a Shinigami. His name is all but forgotten now, but he still retained his knowledge. One of his favorite moves he learned from another Captain, Byakuya Kuchiki. Tsubine had developed a non-fatal version of it. But what was the ability? Senka. Senka is Shunpo'ing behind the opponent, spinning and directly attacking and sealing one's "Saketsu" and "Hakusui" in one strike (effectively cutting them off of their spiritual energy flow). The movement is so fast that an opponent may not be able to tell whether he was attacked from the front or the back and even an outside observer may find it impossible to tell what the movements are. Tsubine's version for this was another spinning action.

And so, part two of the play commenced. He emerged from his Shunpo behind the cluster of Misaiko afterimages. Mid-Shunpo, he had struck one. He did not feel resistance when he did so. Thus, the ability of Kuchikukan Tenson activiated. The trace of the afterimages was tracked, destroying them as he had destroyed the one from before. And this was his chance. He was close enough to the cluster that he could have struck any of them, even if the one he had struck not been an afterimage. He spun counter-clockwise, using the Shunpo's kinetic energy to create a strong centrifugal force, aiming towards the real Misaiko's right thigh.
It did was not meant to cut the leg off. Instead, it was meant to wound it. It was meant to cause an instability. And the force he had going for him was enough to make the cut (if it connected) go like a hot knife through butter. It would have been a clean cut, no resistance. So unless Tsubine saw blood spurt, he wouldn't know if it hit or not. He could only tell if it spurt, not if there was blood overall.
Why?
Because he was not quick enough.
The blades did hit above. His neck started to bleed. A surface cut, but it was a cut nonetheless. He smirked as he landed on the ground. The roles were reversed. He was on the ground, she was above him. He was ready to strike again, but she was as well.

"That was a good hit you got on me. Not surprising in the least. At least we know we both bleed red."

Tsubine made a joke with that last bit. However, he was preparing for his next move as he turned around to face her slightly. Tsubine did not do a full 180-degree turn. He did about a 130-degree turn. He could clearly see her, but she couldn't fully see his sword from her position. Tsubine had it back and ready to strike again. However, he wasn't going to strike with a large frontal shunpo to her. No, Tsubine was going to use one of his patented Iaijutsu techniques: Shibōsū.

Shibōsū is another Shunpo-infused move of Tsubine's. And as soon as he had firm footing, he took off. Instead of going in a straight line, Tsubine arced. However, he drew his sword as well. He could not control the distance or trajectory once mid-flight, so he was aiming at the last location Misaiko was at in his eyes. The arc Tsubine made was essentially one massive swing of his sword. Yes, Tsubine had just upped the ante. He had taken the flow of battle back. He was slowly regaining his spark... and with so, he was regaining his joy of battle.
