Fresh Scars, New Blood [Asuka, Lerna]
Wed Oct 30, 2024 12:32 pm
Furukawa Asuka
The Furukawa Estate was usually a quiet place, as befitting that of a library, but today it felt truly empty. She'd sent the servants home to spend time with their families, or just time away from the house if they had no desire to make such a journey, and her mother was away doing what she could to aid with rebuilding another part of the Koizumi Domain. It mattered little that they were gone, in truth, for Asuka doubted she would have heard them anyway, but the solitude brought her a strange feeling of security.
There was a chill in the air, the kind that ran right through her to her bones, which tried to steer her inside but Asuka would meet her guest at the gate. It would be unbecoming of a host to leave the door open and expect them to come in, so she waited patiently for their arrival. Perhaps it would be strange for that guest, to see her dead friend's shadow, but this was about doing right by Asami. Her sister had cared for this person enough that Asuka knew who she was, after all, and that was evidence enough of her import.
It would be a trying day. But that was par for the course now.

It had taken several days of work.
In the heat of the moment, she had been able to keep it together. She had kept herself in line, and even though those slow creeping tendrils of urge had bubbled up, her dedication kept her in line. But that was not acceptable. She wouldn't endanger someone with 'well enough'. She would not abide the notion that she would endanger people. It was why she had isolated herself in the first place.
And so, it was only after all of that effort, all of that wrestling with her urges, with her zanpaku'to, that she was standing here. It wasn't perfect. But it was enough for now.
Making her way into that familiar section of the estate, paused as she was let into the area where Asuka was, and for just a moment she paused at the threshold to regard the woman herself.
She could see the resemblance. It certainly wasn't so incredible that she'd mistake them. No.... Asami's scent was pretty different, but she still knew, instinctively, who she was standing before. "You called for me?" she asked with the slightest of sheepish smiles.

Furukawa Asuka
There were similarities between Asuka and his sister, certainly, though it would be inaccurate to call them identical. The familial resemblance remained—the same hair, the same eyes—but a different woman. It was in her scent, as Lerna quickly deduced, but there were far more differences than that. She had always felt like the chalk to her sister's cheese, not that it mattered much anymore. No one would be at risk of confusing them again.
"I did. I wondered if you had heard the news, I suppose there is no longer a Gotei to distribute it so I do not think she would blame you for looking after yourself."
Asuka's voice was soft, each word spoke like it might have been a snowflake falling upon untrodden ground. Her hair fluttered wildly in the wind as she turned, leading the way further inside this portion of the estate towards a waiting room of sorts. Much like the rest of their home, it was quite a plain and practical room rather than showing off anything fancy. With a wave of the hand, she offered for Lerna to sit if she wished. It might be better if she was sat, it would suit her better anyway.
"I am Furukawa Asuka, you may address me as Asuka if you wish."

Lerna was quiet for a few long seconds as she followed the woman. She turned her attention to their surroundings, to the room that she was being led to, before ultimately she looked back to Asuka. "I heard... about what happened. she noted softly. And for the life of her, she didn't remember what she was supposed to be in this moment. She was, after all distracted. By this weak little thing infront of her. The urge never passed even the notion of fufillment. But still, in the very edge of her thoughts. She thought how easy they'd be to chew.
It made her sick. But none of that showed on her face as she gave a gentle nod. "Lerna. Just... Lerna. It's a pleasure to meet ya Asuka. I.... well. I knew your sister. She was my instructor for a bit. And we became close friends after I graduated," She however, imagined that her own .... confessions had pushed them apart. How ... long had it been? Since she last saw Asami?
What even had been the last thing she said to her?
But that thought snared in her mind. Actually, that did beg the question, why was she here? But she was patient. The woman would probably get around to that.

Furukawa Asuka
Asuka could tell that it was probably a sore subject, that or there was something else eating at her that was much less of her business. There was certainly a look in her eye sometimes when Lerna glanced at her, but she could not place it much beyond being unsettled. Grief was a complex thing, perhaps this was that.
"I think my sister always knew that you meant well, Lerna. I suppose that is why I invited you to visit. I wanted to see how you were doing because it might make her rest just a little easier."
Her true goals were not quite so selfless, but it would have been far more awkward to voice them. They were all handling this in their own way if they were handling it at all.
"Sis wasn't exactly the type to make friends easily, but I imagine you knew that too." Was this really what she wanted to hear? "Sorry, I did not exactly plan a script for this. Would you care for some tea, or biscuits?"

Lerna paused for a moment and was quiet as Asuka asked such a thing. "I'm sorry, but I can't say... that it would put her at ease. Not yet. I'm still suffering some ...effects from the attack. But I'm working past them." She rolled her shoulder a bit, as if to give the impression that it was purely physical. Last thing she needed was this girl worrying. t
hey had enough on their plate.
At the mention of Asami's friendliness she actually raised her brows. She had always been so friendly as a teacher, it was odd to think she didnt have friends. Though the offer of a drink pulled her from her stupor. "I'd love some."

Furukawa Asuka
Asuka simply nodded when Lerna suggested she was still recovering, she was healthy enough to make the journey over here so Asuka wanted to believe it was nothing too serious. In time, perhaps, she might offer to take a look at those injuries and make sure that was the case but she was hardly going to accost the poor woman as soon as she got in the door.
"Very well. Unless you have a particular preference I will brew a pot of kukicha for us and fetch some refreshments from the pantry." Sliding open another door at the far side of the room, Asuka paused again at the threshold before turning back. "Forgive me, I have sent the help away for the day so it will take a few minutes to prepare. You may wait here or peruse the garden if you would like. Asami spent much of her time tending to it these past few months, so I think it is quite beautiful."
The door remained open as Asuka vanished inside, setting about her task with a diligent focus whilst leaving Lerna to her own devices.

Lerna blinked owlishly at the mention, she wasn't really the kinda gal who remembered all the kinds of tea. It was all just leaf water to her. But she wasn't going to say that, some of it did taste pretty interesting. "Kuchika works for me." She noted with a gentle nod of her head, though she was.... perplexed when Asuka further explained the situation. She'd ... sent away all the help? Why? She pondered the reasoning for that, did she want to be alone with her?
"That's fine. take your time. I'll make myself comfortable till you get back." She assured the woman, waiting until they departed before she turned her attention to the garden that Asuka had pointed out. For just a second, she stared at it, and she took a moment to remember the last time Asami had spoken to her about it.
Quietly, she made her way to the edge of the garden itself, and knelt down to stare over the frail little leaves and petals that it consisted of. Now and then she had even witnessed Asami caring for these little plants. She had never really understood it. The care placed in such a thing, but thinking about it now. She felt ... something. Perhaps it wasn't understanding. But these plants, as frail and as feeble as they were. Things that with just a flick of her wrist, she could destroy without a trace.
Unlike the counltess people she'd had to restrain herself around. As weak as they were, they didn't incite that same sensation inside of her. No matter how helpless these plants were, she had no urge to destroy them.
Reaching out, she gently ran her fingers along the leaves of a small shrub. she had no idea what it actually was, for all she knew it was poisonous. But still, she handled it carefully, inspecting it's leaves. It was still quite safe and intact.
It probably had nothing to do with how Asami had felt about them.
But it was ... something.

The garden was certainly somewhere that Asami had spent a great deal of her time in her final months, and it had not truthfully been her intention. Certainly, if the woman had not of her impending fate then perhaps she would have taken some time to prepare for that instead. But, beyond that, it was a hobby that she had surprised herself with how well she took to it.
Her life had been based on principles of restraint, shackling herself to her duty to the detriment of everything around her, so perhaps she had found it comforting to be able to simply sit back and watch life unfold before her very eyes. Asami had not planted the flowers with the intention that Lerna or anyone else would come here and appreciate them in her stead, this had been an entirely selfish venture, but it would be quite remiss of her memory to think that she would not take some satisfaction from drawing some level of emotive response from the mod soul.
Life was such a fragile thing, after all, and, even though Lerna was made of something else entirely, Asami had gone out of her way to look past that and into the soul beneath.
But who would tend to it all now? It was a garden that had reached its end.
The tea was brewing elsewhere in the estate, this was all just a fleeting moment of introspection, so what might Lerna make of it all? What was she in this analogy? The garden, the gardener, or the flower? Perhaps something else entirely.

She stood back up and closed her eyes, a slow and steady sigh as she .... took it all in. And she wondered what it was that had brought her here. What DID Asuka want? She turned and looked over the rest of the garden, where the girl had left her. She wondered what intent was there. To leave a snake in the garden like this.
Did she knew?
No... probably not. In all honesty, even Asami had never ... really seemed to accept that from her. And she did wonder, how she would have reacted if she ever had. Would Asami approve? Knowing the kind of monster she was? That she be near her sister? Well, there wasn't a lot of point thinking about that. She walked down the line of the garden and looked over what was planted there. Looking for ... something.
But there weren't really any answers among the bulbs.
So she kept walking.
And waiting.
