This Might Be Lupus [Unohana/Noharu]

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
Despite allying herself with Byakuya Kuchiki and Yuuto Hisakawa, Retsu Unohana maintained control of the Shin'o Seiyakuin. The actual formal details of how things were going to be organized was still up in the air, and until that happened she still had a duty. Unlike the day after the attack, the General-Director was moving around with some energy in each step. She wasn't exhausted, and there was a direct purpose to each action. Until Byakuya—for she wasn't responding to a summon from the other—announced the details, she was going to continue being a doctor. And the end goal of a doctor was to empty their hospital's beds with healthy patients.
And one such patient was someone who, like her, put the nobleborn nurses on edge. Even Retsu couldn't help but be amused. She had made a promise to this woman, but she wasn't expecting it to be called upon so soon. Trailed by two nurses, Retsu knocked and entered a cramped prep room. "Noharu Asahina." She bowed her head slightly in acknowledgement. There was no "third seat" to attach to her name anymore. "My staff informs me you have the tissue sample to begin the work on your lung, correct? Before we get started in preparing you for the surgery, there are a few routine questions that need to be answered." She waited until she heard the rustle of paper and the click of an inkpen before continuing. "How fares your hip and other injuries? And has your breathing worsened since we last spoke?"

It had been at least three days. Truth be told, she'd had no idea how long it actually took to grow tissue like this. after all, she remembered the days of seeing Mayuri grow an arm within seconds. But she supposed this was a more sensitive matter, and not quite working with that man's tools.
Still, there they were, sealed within a tight container somewhere. No doubt preserved until they could be implanted. The Pre-surgery prep had certainly been extensive. She was all cleaned up and readied, as well as given a few things that purportedly would help with the procedure. But it was when Unohana walked into her room again that she knew it was go time.
She flashed a lopsided smile to the woman as she stepped in and gave a nod. There was a notable difference in the woman that she'd seen just a few days ago. She was lookinghealthier, less tired. She was alert, responsive, and enthusiastic as she spoke with the nurses.
And as Unohana approached, she gave a nod as they offered those preliminary questions.
My Hip and Arm Feel great. Much better at least, aside from my arm being gone, heh. But the aching's subsided. The hips feeling fine, it was a bit stiff and sensitive at first, but I've really grown into it.." She noted with an enthused grin, promptly reaching to peel the blanket up and show a little wiggle of her leg, at the very least abstaining from flashing the captain and just showing the motion of her leg under the sheets.
"Breathing's... uh.. fine. A bit better after you got that shit outta my wheezers. Can even talk in full sentences now! Uh, I have been ... advised by my medical staff that I not go testing my lung capacity since then, though." Her voice became a bit flatter in tone.
Noharu had absolutely attempted a bit of physical activity, and the slight smile to her lips spoke to how that had gone.
The nurse next to her that had been keeping an eye on her peered a bit, but said nothing.

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
Retsu let a relieved breath escape. It may not seem it, but each patient's success did mean something. It wasn't a matter of pride. She knew she would succeed. She was the only one who could succeed in such an endeavour in Soul Society now. This wasn't to downplay people such as Rukia Kuchiki. Rukia had succeeded very rapidly in the past century in her Kaidō and overall medical skills. That was just one hundred years' worth of experience though.
Noharu was not as excitable as before, but that was likely thanks to not being immediately off of a battle. She examined the area briefly with only a glance. If it weren't for a slight discoloration not unlike the remnants of a tanline, she would not have been able to see it. If Noharu exposed it to the sun for a few hours, it'd be impossible to see a difference. "I imagine whatever screaming or yowling you would have been doing would have been cut short by fits of coughing."
"Let me now explain the risks of the procedure." Retsu crossed her hands in the long sleeves of the doctor's haori she wore. "Even if the operation is completely successful, you will need to have an inhaler with a bronchodilator—in layman's terms, you will need to go forward as if you had asthma. This is not saying you will be more susceptible to airborne irritants. It is for the rare chance the newer lung begins to fail."
"At the other end is a total failure—when both lungs are unable to be utilized. In that case, you would have to remain with an artificial lung—a device that will oxygenate your body. You will, effectively, be bedridden until the end of your life or until the technology allows such a device to be portable. In this case, your life as a Shinigami would be over." Retsu held out a hand and the other nurses handed her a piece of paper. She did not offer the paper to Noharu just yet. "I know how prideful some Shinigami are. If all they can do is lie in bed, then they would rather not continue living. This paper is what most people refer to as a 'DNR,' but with extra leniency. If your life would be so negatively impacted by the outcome like I described before, it authorizes me to remove your life support. Is this an option you wish to take?"

Noharu snorted softly and almost choked as she laughed at the very idea of testing her lungs like THAT. She had been thinking of a b it of excercise, but the actual mental image of her howling like a banshee in the hospital was xcomical enough to make her snicker, wheezing just a little, before settling herself down, sighing softly as she then turned her attention back to the woman as they explained the procedure and the risks involved.
Right.
She furrowed her brows slightly as she listened and for a moment, she was actually a bit startled. The notion that the operation could go so very badly to make her WORSE than she was now was a bit startling. Surely if it failed wouldn't she just be like this? But no, she hesitated in that line of thought. Much as that was her kneejerk reaction, Unohana wouldn't say something like that likely. Ah... right, she supposed rejection might actually cause damage to what little tissue she had left. OR if it got infected, and they had to remove them , she might wind up with less lung than she had now. Or, if there was some other complication,... no the list was practically endless.
There were a great many things that might go wrong. However, as Unohana came to the point for her to take consideration, she simply shook her head firmly. "I understand the risks involved. But I won't need your sheet of paper." She stated, pausing for a moment before those bright eyes of hers scanned Unohana and then offered a light smile. "Ah, which aint to say I think any little of your warning. Not that. I don't think I'm invincible. However, I'm not all that attached to my old life that I'd do somethin like that." She stated, looking off to the side, to where the window was in the room. "Even if it reaches such a state that I'll never be what I once was. I'll just find some other way to make myself useful." She stated calmly.

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
Despite everything Noharu said, Retsu's answer was simple. She handed the paper back to a nurse who filed it away. "Good." Retsu was not going to tell her that it wasn't actually such a waiver. It was a bill for the prep work. If Noharu was willing to die for this—if she was willing to bet everything on this and this alone? She wasn't strong enough to go through the surgery. To Retsu, this showed a perseverance that would help the process along. Each surgery was both physical and mental. Most times, people didn't have to worry about the so-called "will to live." But for something where a fate worse than death was on the table, it needed to be accounted for.
"We can speak more about how you can be useful after I perform the operation." Retsu did have something to bring up to Noharu, but it would truly depend on the surgery's level of success. "Before we move to the next phase of preparation, do you have any questions for me?"

Noharu just... smiled silently as she suppressed an inappropriate response about how exactly Unohana intended to find a use for her. The weight of her potential new lungs was a bit of a dampener on her lurid jokes, and she paused to wrack her brain for any questions she might have. The dangers were something she accepted, and she'd be damned if she planned on dying through all this. She simply accepted that possibility.
"Nothing comes to mind. I think I'm ready for prepping." she noted with a smile and a nod, looking around curiously to see what exactly that'd look like. Needles? An IV? Some kinda....tube thing for her neck or something? She honestly had no idea what this surgery was gonna be like. Would they put her out? Or just like... turn of the pain in her chest while they did this? So many questions, but frankly, she just wanted to see how it all went down. ONCE it was all over then she'd probably have plenty of questions. But well, there was no point beating around the bush, right?

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
Noharu was definitely being a more proper patient this time. This would help move things along smoothly. She nodded once more. "Very well. These two nurses will finish your preparations. When next we speak, it will be after the operation." Retsu turned to leave, and the nurses spread to let her pass. She hesitated at the door with her back turned to Noharu. "And please do not give the nurses too much trouble." The remark was almost similar to something she would have said as a Captain of the Fourth. It lacked the warning mirth from then.
The two nurses would begin the sedation process. It was through a combination of Kidō—there was a disturbing number of Kidō designed to knock someone out after all—and an IV-administered general anesthetic. Both of the nurses would do their best to ignore any Noharu antics before the sedation, but no matter what, they would continue through with their task.
Meanwhile, Retsu went straight to the operating room. She was soon in a disposable gown with other changes to better help in keeping a sterile environment. Noharu was wheeled in—covered and definitely unconscious. Then, a second cart was brought in. A steel cylinder with multiple valves open and seemingly steaming sat atop it. It was being rapidly-cooled, she knew. Whatever liquid it was created in was hotter than boiling water. She had treated more than one burn from someone mishandling those containers. A nurse with a thick glove twisted the top of the container and removed the lid to even more steam filling the air. She nodded to Retsu. "Then let us begin."
Hours passed before the surgery was complete. There were a few moments where it was dangerous. One time, they were even close to losing the patient. And yet... "You're finally awake." Retsu's voice would be the first thing Noharu would hear. Her back was turned, so it was hard to tell how she knew. "The surgery was a success at least on paper. How are you feeling?" Retsu turned around, and... an oddly-familiar sight would greet Noharu. It was almost like a ghost from ages ago was there...

There weren't any real antics to be had. As a matter of fact, Noharu felt a bit strange as the Nurses got her all prepped up, and she searched herself as she let the slow creep of unconsciousness wrap around her. Thinking of when she'd almost died, of the thought in her head that had kept her going.
Well, since then, she'd found out that telling Yuuto about that incident would probably not be in the cards. There had been a lot of rumors aboiut Yuuto, but few with as much staying power. That he had found someone.
What a weird thing to pop into her head, huh? She didn't feel sad, but she did feel a bit.... off. But she quickly realized that that wasn';t going to helpo, and so as she could feel the slow fuzz of anesthesia pushing her into the warm dark, she turned her focus. Thinking about all the other shit she had to live for. Ranma...Rangiku... Koga.... Kyo.... Kasha.... all the remnants of the Eighth. Erika's cute little tush. The countless students that she knew were still in the Shino Academy.
And of course, a calm, smiling face. One that despite the years that had passed, was still fresh in her mind.
The operation was a lengthy one. Working around the insides of her chest cavity certainly held its dangers, and the delicate work certainly put strain on the circumstances. But it was Unohana working on her. And it was Noharu on that goddamn table, and she wanted to live. There were a few scares, drops in blood pressure indicating little surprise bleeds, and drops in oxygen levels thanks to the damage to her lungs and the strain of being worked on. But they were prepared. Between the equipment that they haed, and the skills of the woman at the table, even the 'close calls' that could be of note were frankly not close at all.
And when her eyes finally opened it was in response to that calm voice.
She blinked a few times and took a nice, slow, deep breath. Ohhhhh that was the fuckin good shit. She could feel a tension in her chest. She wondered how many ribs... no they probably went in down the neck? Up the belly? Or had they just opened her up like a lunchbox? She couldn't quite feel any stitching, but well. She was probably still kinda out of it.
"Not paralyzed." She raised her arm and lightly flexed her fingers. "And not gaspin for air. PRetty awesome all things considered." She smirked weakly.

UNOHANA RETSU | BLOODLETTER
The nice part about Kaidō was that it was easy to close a patient up. There wouldn't be any scarring, stitching, or stapling. Noharu might be sore, but that would go away. Retsu watched Noharu's vitals while they spoke. "If you were paralyzed, then that would have meant there was something far more concerning going on. Or the nurses did something during transport." She could feel the two nurses tense with that comment. Amusing.
"You shouldn't be doing any heavy lifting for at least two weeks. There are no stitches to keep together, but your body will still need time to recover. It did undergo a strenuous ordeal after all. If there were still a Gotei, I would have issued an off-work order for you." Retsu eyed Noharu for a reaction to that. "Without the Gotei, what do you plan to do?"

Noharu slowly rolled her shoulders as she felt the energy slowly seep back into her. There was no tension in her chest, something that had annoyed her after this whole ordeal. She knew she had to take it slow, she was lucky she'd had this much improvement. But even more than that, she felt a shiver up her spine and gently clenched her hands.
"Training that doesn't require heavy lifting." She stated calmly, kido training probably. Meditation with her Zanpaku'to.And then, once she WAS able to. She'd get that perfect ass of hers on the grind. Shetook slow, deep breaths and let her eyesdrift to a close, keeping herself from... getting too excited.
"No goddamn Clue. " She closed her eyes and thought about her former subordinates. Ranma. Koga. They were getting things set up. But someone would have to make sure they didn't get themselves killed. She had to make sure Rangiku was safe too, and who knew what else was going to rear its ugly head. She sure as fuck wasn't going to waste this second chance though. "And what about you? What do you plan on doing when everyones healed up?" She turned to look at the woman.
