THE HUMAN APPLICATION

I. Basic Information

» Name: Steiner Franz
» Alias: Divine Crusader, Hero of Honor
» Age: 29
» Gender: Male

» Association: Vandenreich

» Appearance Written: Standing at about 6'4 and being of a pretty impressive build, Steiner is, at least by most standards, an above average looking human. He has a farmer's tan from working in the fields for the last three years and from his numerous hours spent working in the outdoors. He tends to wear comfortable clothing, not really leaning too far into what is stylish, or classy, but rather what is functional. These clothes tend to be patched up at times, visible to those with a keen eye, but almost seemlessly as Steiner tends to repair his own gear while refusing to acquire new things. He tends to keep himself rather cleanly, shaving and washing his hair, in an attempt to off-set his penny pinching nature when it comes to keeping his gear for far past its' expiration date. He has several weapons on his person that are kept in multiple different locations on his person as to help him remain advantageous in conflicts that may arise.

These weapons vary from daggers to axes and even throwing knives of varying degrees. Steiner is a swordsman first though, having trained with it as his primary weapon over a decade, and being quite capable with it due to his natural talents. This sword is probably the most well kept piece of gear on him, properly sharpened, and maintained as to avoid potential equipment failure in the field.

I. Personality

» Personality:To describe Stein's personality is to look beyond the hardships of his youth and dig into who he has become. Some would say due to the traumatic events in his life that Franz would exhibit some introversion, but it is the opposite. Steiner is an open, caring, and compassionate individual who sets himself above no one, and is willing to take the pain and hardships that comes his way to ensure that other's don't have to go through what he has gone through. He is the first to step in when a problem arrives and the last to leave when a problem is solved. As troublesome as that may sound, Stein doesn't seem to mind being the guy to step in when the going gets rough as he knows what could happen to other's if issues are not dealt with as quickly as possible. This tends to lead to quick judges in character however, as Stein quickly assess situations, and doesn't tend to read into the context of things. He mostly only sees right and wrong, however he can be persuaded to believe that there is a gray.

As such heroism seems to come naturally for the twenty six year old, though he is unsure how he could be described as "heroic" as he believes that doing the right thing and helping others is what should be natural human nature. According to him protecting people and helping people with their issues should come to a person just as easy as they would breathe. This leads to philosophical differences and a great deal of headbutting with those of different beliefs, but Stein stands true to what he believes which further adds to the "hero" title that is thrown at him. To him, however a hero is something that he isn't. To him a hero is someone with the power to make a difference and he, being someone without power in a world filled with individuals with the power to change the world, can never be someone like that. That of course doesn't stop him from dreaming of one day becoming someone like that.

Some would call Steiner calm and collected as well, as he tend to not freak out when a normal person would. Once again, the tragedies of his childhood lend into this state of being. He has gone through so much torture in his life that most things seem to just not phase the twenty six year old as much as they would a normal person. Yet, he is still haunted by nightmares of his life spent with his first foster parents, and those wounds still run very deep. Which is why he tries his best to remain calm and be as collected as he can, putting on an air of being much more mature than he actually is to try, and hide his own insecurities. However, behind that very same air is an twenty six year old with a great deal of insecurities.

Those insecurities, however have helped Steiner grow a great deal as a fighter, and as a person. Never believing that he is strong enough or fast enough to deal with threats that cross his path. This has allowed to Steiner to push himself very far in terms of physical training and mental conditioning. It has also helped him mold himself into the person he is today. His kindness springs from his insecurities, as his feelings of helplessness gained from years of torture at the hands of his first foster parents, has helped him learn that no one wants to be alone in this world. So, he strives to be as open, and kind as he possibly can as to have no one feel like he has and at some times still does. It is through hardship that Stein has grown into a fine young man with a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong.

I. History

» History:
What is known about Steiner's pre-Vandenreich days has been recorded over multiple documents from many hospitals and school reports of signs of physical trauma. The child, born to a family of drunken abusers, has the scars to prove the validity of such claims, and to prove that these documents are sound in their conclusion. That conclusion being that Steiner Franz didn't have much of a childhood to speak of. His parents, while sober, were extremely result driven individuals who expected Steiner to be the perfect student. Failure was not an option and when it reared its' ugly head, his parents would turn to the bottle, and then would turn the bottle to Steiner. Multiple fractures, multiple deep skin wounds, and multiple nights of immense pain faced the child before he had even reached the age of twelve.

As much as his parents failed him, the system itself failed him more as his parents were able to keep things under the rug, and fool a lax system that seemed to care very little for him. Still, Steiner endured the beatings, and in some part of his mind believed that if he was just what they wanted him to be he could avoid the pain he was in every time he failed. Thus began his mental issues and his own drive for self-improvement. He took studying and training, especially training to avoid the beatings and to endure the beatings, extremely seriously. He had little time to play with other kids his age, not that he made many friends with his attitude toward certain right and wrong situations, but that was fine with him. The only thoughts in his head were of improving and making his parents happy, nothing else mattered. But you see, life never was that simple. For every success he had, he would falter from time to time, and then the beatings would continue.

By the time Steiner had reached high school, he had just accepted he would never be able to make things better for his parents or himself. He viewed himself as a failure, a defective product brought into the world to suffer at the hands of his betters, and he had become fine with that. He still trained and studied hard, he was far too gone in trying to make himself better so that maybe one day he could at least see his parents smile at him, and congratulate him on a job well done to change now. Still, things would change one day, and not for the better. His parents, seemingly done giving a shit about him, and far too tired of just beating Steiner decided to abandon the teenager one day. Leaving him to an empty home, his personal belonging sold, and their own belongings moved to a location he had no idea where. Standing in that empty home, Steiner began to panic, and in that panic came an epiphany.

His parents had never loved him, they had never cared enough to view him as truly being a part of the family, and their ultimate betrayal was leaving him here to just find a way to survive. They had discarded him like garbage, but instead of being drowned in panic he found himself smiling, he was free, and the world which had been dyed in gray was now vibrant, and warm. He would no more suffer beatings and would no more have to hate himself for his failures. No, now he could just be himself, and be free to pursue his own passions without concern for the consequences of failure. It was on that day that Steiner Franz, the hero, was truly born, and Steiner Franz the punching bag died. Packing up anything, which was not much, that he could use, Steiner took off, and left his old life behind. Choosing to pursue a life off the grid instead of a life bound by the shackles of society.

The teenager would go and live in the woods near where his former home was at, choosing to not even live in the place he had associated with so many bad memories, and instead chose the outdoors as a better place to live. He found a little nook, hiding under a rather large tree to protect himself from the rain, and established himself a make shift base camp by scrounging up money by doing odds and ends around the town. He would never keep his money for long, using it to buy living necessities, and focusing on tools that he would need such as a fishing pole, skinning knives, and other odds and ends. He quickly found himself getting into a routine: morning training which would then lead into a visit into town to either work or head to the library for research on survival or other things he found interesting, and then he would return around mid-afternoon to begin scrounging up food and supplies.

Morning training would range from set workout plans to fighting local fauna and on occasion a wild Hollow who happened to venture into the woods. He gained a reputation as a protector of the woods and all who would find themselves walking in it unaware of what was going on around them and was offered a reward for the good work he was doing at times. He would decline, instead he would ride the dopamine of doing a good job, and having people thank him. A new and exciting experience for him who had come from an abusive family and an extremely welcome one at that. By the time Steiner had reached sixteen years old, two years after leaving his home, and choosing his new life Steiner was almost a completely different person physically and mentally. He had grown sharp in terms of combat tactics and had improved drastically in his martial skills to say the least, but unlike most 'powerful' people he heard about he did not display much more than that.

He had picked up swordsmanship on a whim, an old blade he had found at an antique store catching his eye on a particular job, and he had been offered it as payment for doing work for the man who owned the store. He had accepted and had over the last two years become something of a natural, but he was never satisfied with just simply being a natural, and his time at the library picking up different things about swordsmanship became pivotal to his development. He began to patch together a style of his own, more akin to dancing, and heavily based on speed rather than raw power, he felt confident in his fledgling style, but knew it would take a great deal more time to grow it farther. As he became more self-sufficient, the trips to town began to be pushed back farther, and farther while training became his bread and butter. He spent almost half his day training to improve in some way or another, be it stamina, speed, strength, battle field tactics, or improvements to his style, everything was on the table.

It was one day, on a long run through the woods, that Steiner would come across a group of Hollows who were attacking some kind of group of people, and he decided to stick his nose into things. It did not end well. Steiner was talented, but these Hollows were far from the mindless low level creatures he had been fighting for training, these beasts were organized, and acting like pack animals. They brutalized the travelers and quickly went to work on Steiner, who even with all of his training, was only just able to fend them off while protecting the last few survivors from harm. Their skin was thick and hard to pierce and they protected their masks well, a weak point he had learned of over his time training, and he felt that even with his impressive stamina they would over-run him soon. A survivor leapt in at one second, taking a critical blow from one of the Hollows that would have mortally wounded Steiner, and in that second Steiner's well of power finally awoke. The temperature in the surrounding area increased not just slightly, but drastically and continued to rise. The thick skin of the Hollows became a detriment as they began to feel heat exhaustion and had been fighting for a very long time at that.

By the time the shinigami had arrived on sight, according to a report, they found puddles of blackish goo, and ash scattered around with a group of humans surrounding a fallen red haired teen. Steiner had been slightly injured, but was taken to a hospital to be taken care of, and treated for the injuries he had incurred during the struggles. The survivor's testimony talked of Steiner turning the Hollows to ash with a glowing white swing from his sword and then he had collapsed to the floor from exhaustion. Steiner awoke in a hospital room a few days later, feeling still fatigued, and looking to leave the hospital without much fuss being given. He escaped without telling anyone where he was going and returned to the spot where he had fought the pack of Hollows. He had returned to look for his sword, only finding the handle, and the remnants of melted metal. He tried to utilize this power again, realizing he had discovered something that could make him truly a 'hero', but was not able to to truly manifest it at will quite yet.

For the next few months, Steiner would spend time almost exclusively focusing on trying to recreate the conditions for his power's manifestation. He took more risks, venturing outside of the areas that he had tread before, and fought stronger enemies than he had been used to fighting in the much safer areas of the woods he had used to know. This risky behavior bore fruit in terms of much better training, but also meant more begrudging trips to the hospital with injuries that he could not heal through his more modest means. Progress was slow, but there was progress, and that was more than enough to keep Steiner repeating the process over and over again hoping for the switch to just flip on. During this time, Steiner upgraded his arsenal of tools, and armed himself to be more versatile to deal with the more unknown threats in the areas he now tread. Finally after a rather harsh encounter with his first Arrancar, his powers finally clicked into place, and he, after recovering from the ordeal began to understand his capabilities.

He learned from his experience with the Arrancar, in his desperation, that he could control the power of heat, and by doing so could super heat the air creating bursts of burning and skin boiling steam. More over he could heat up objects and natural elements around him to achieve varying results, but having just discovered this power he found himself to be quite limited in his overall capabilities. So, much like he had done with his physical self-improvements, he began to train himself tirelessly to improve his own spiritual prowess. This training became quite the hardship as the limits of his reserves of spiritual energy and the amount of effort it took to just unleash his power at will were quite limiting. He tried his best to not over-exert himself through his own personal training, but at times his frustration on the lack of progress, and improvement on his potential applications of his power would cause him to overdo things. The overdoing of things usually meant a day of rest due to passing out or a day on the mend due to causing a minor injury or something of the like.

Still his training was useful and he did become more competent, but not at the speed he wished it would, as he had hoped to be on to far more challenging opponents to improve himself before long, but had had no such luck. It frustrated him to no end, but he had never quit on anything in his life so he continued on, and focused solely on that aspect of himself, forgoing further sword training or physical training. It all became about improving his spiritual power, not only in the sense of controlling heat and manipulating it, but improving his ability to utilize his power more continuously. Years passed by, training being interrupted by occasional heroics, or Hollows wandering too close to the base camp that he had set up far away from the boundaries of civilization, and while he felt like he hadn't improved substantially, he did feel progress was indeed being made. That is when the call for defenders of the Earth came and after a great deal of thought, Steiner decided that maybe it would be better to no longer isolate, but to join up with the Vandenreich.

He became one of their first human members, a notable feat in itself, and even more so he was given a bit more room to operate, not really having to answer to anyone outside of high ranking officers. As such, Cyrus himself tasked him with continuing to operate heroically, and so he continued to do so, but this time in the name of the Vandenreich. He served loyally and in return took no paycheck, but instead took his reward for his service in the form of knowledge and services. He trained with the best the Earth had to offer, researched everything that he could, and used all of his free time looking to expand his potential and fully unlock his talents. Steiner served until all of the threats, namely the demonic threat, had been dealt with, and after dealing with the horrors of war, and working within the background to fight battles that effected innocent lives on a more micro scale than World War IV, Steiner would request his retirement. Steiner would state that the war was coming to a close and the time of heroes was close to over as well and that the soldiers of the Vandenreich would be more suited to building a much more secure Earth. The Vandenreich granted his request and Steiner disappeared from public eye, privately of course the Vandenreich would keep an eye on him as they did all people who left the organization who had power of note, and would watch from afar.

Steiner would retire to a mountain village in the Alps, now armed with a vaster knowledge on how to harness and even train his powers, and would for the most part spend his years of retirement training, and defending the mountain village he called home. However, nothing is ever to remain permanent. Five long years passed and for the most part the world was calm, it was quiet, and it was fine. At least that is how Steiner viewed it, having cut off all communication with the outside world as to not distract himself from his training, or from enjoying his retirement. He built up strong relationship with the people of the village and worked hard with them to maintain their safety, but once again nothing was to last. Eventually there would be a knock on the door and eventually he would dust off the old uniform to return to service.

I. Natural Abilities

» Natural Abilities:

Peak Human Physical Traits: Steiner's form has been honed through long and strenuous training sessions, not only by necessity, but because Steiner desired to improve from the weak and pathetic version of himself that his parents abused. These driving factors: survival, desire, and will to overcome drove Steiner to become what many would consider a 'peak human'. He is not an overly muscular individual, having a runner's physique, and neither would he consider himself the strongest man in the world, but his overall physical skills have developed to the point of not necessarily having a 'weakness'. He is well rounded, except for his speed which he needed to further develop to hone his swordsmanship skills into a much more deadly form. He honed all of these tools through fighting wild beasts, Hollows, and training with the best fighters the Earth had to offer within the Vandenreich.

Unbelievable Willpower: Having suffered through abuse, mental trauma of being abandoned, and the tribulations of having to survive on his own for most of his life, Steiner has developed a sense of will that is hard to truly understand. What is simple to understand is if he puts his mind to something, he will never quit until it is achieved, it may mean risk to him, but Steiner is not one to back down. Even more so it is extremely hard to manipulate him, as those that attempt to do so will find his convictions much too hard to bend, and that his desire to do the right thing is hard to push in one direction or the other.

Valse Des Lames De Fer: Steiner's own personal style of swordsmanship is almost completely founded on the principal of quick, precise, and continuous slashes from his blades. It can be used with two blades or a single blade, but Steiner prefers to utilize a singular blade when utilizing his style. The style is much like a dance, using superior footwork, flexibility, and finesse to strike at the opponent relentlessly while utilizing spinning motions to accelerate the swings of the blade to maximize cutting force. The style does not like to block or finds its effectiveness greatly diminished when maneuverability is compromised and when used defensively focuses on parrying rather than full guarding attacks while turning the opponent's momentum of their swings with the parry into opportunities to strike out at vitals. This style has been honed through constant use and is quite formidable in open fields of combat instead of tight quarters. This style is developed through heavy research via books and other mediums and constant practice. As such, Steiner is quite skilled with the blade, having devised his own style, and in many ways might be a prodigy in a sense having developed this style at a very early age.
