Thawing Cold Veins [Lerna, Asami]
Sun Jun 04, 2023 2:39 pm
IT was warm out.
The first and foremost thought in her head as she made her way to the Furukawa estate. A calm smile on her lips and waited just outside of the estate. A brief moment to look up at .... a bunch of wood and metal. Some stone as wel, judging by the material the roof seemed to be comprised of. She was aware that it was beautiful and majestic, at least by Shinigami standards. IT was sturdy, she supposed, but still there was only a detached appreciation she could offer.
Nah, the real thing to admire had yet to be revealed. The Guard had informed her that Asami would be notified of her presence and that she could wait down here, and some small part of her wondered if this was normal. She supposed she wasn't exactly a noble. Or maybe her being a mod soul made things worse? Better? It was hard to tell with Souls. It was hard for her to follow their way of thinking. But all the same, she waited in ...well, nice lothes for her. A clean red button-up shirt with a black tie. Dark grey slacks and a black jacket. She uh... didn't exactly own any nice dresses. This outfit was the nicest thing she owned. A fancy getup she'd been given for a meetup with a particularly upscale coke dealer out in Northern France. The nice red color meant you could barely even tell there'd been blood on it even when it was fresh.
She could only wonder what Asami herself would be wearing to their outing, and she paused to look down at her own outfit, noting how much it probably clashed.
Hopefully Asami liked it.

Furukawa Asami
The woman in the mirror looked more like a stranger the longer Asami stared at her. She was a pretty little thing, with an unruly mop of black hair that seemed like it could never be tamed and pale features that were usually hidden beneath a layer or two of makeup. But those piercing eyes still revealed to her the truth; that it was indeed a reflection of herself and nothing would change that. Instinctively, she reached for a fascinator to affix atop her head, but then she stopped herself. This was something different, so she should try something different. If it did not work out then that was a lesson learned.
They were going to a fair, after all, not a formal dinner. So Asami let her hair run wild and instead focused on what to wear. A few different dresses came to mind, all her mothers handiwork, and she was still deliberating the finer points when a servant came to tell her that Lerna was waiting for her. That was to be expected, of course, as she had never intended to be punctual and instead used this to gauge Lerna’s attitude. A cruel test, but an effective one nonetheless.
After a short period of waiting, in which time Lerna was offered some light refreshments by the servants but mostly left to herself, the door to the sitting room would slide open to reveal Asami. She was garbed in a flowing summer dress, white but decorated with assorted red flowers, that hung off her shoulders and wrapped around the top of her arms. Her platformed shoes clicked against the floorboards, doing a little to alleviate the height difference between the two, whilst a pleasant aroma seemed to linger in the air from her perfume. To some, it might have seemed like she had gone all out, but to Asami this was quite a modest effort and one that suited the occasion a little more. Her cool eyes softened at the sight of Lerna, lips curling into a pleasant smile, as she approached to offer a welcoming embrace.
“Sorry for making you wait, Lerna.” She lied effortlessly, her smile unflinching as her head cocked a little to one side. “I was tending to the garden and quite lost track of time.”

Finally seeing Asami caused Lerna to perk up. A big grin flashing across her features as she made note of the woman's rather fancy attire. A glance of appreciation made as Lerna stood up and did a little bow. "Whew, you look really nice! Hah, looking pretty isn't really my thing so I went a different direction. You ready to have a blast?"" She ventured bright and warm, not even a shred of nervousness in the woman as she promptly closed the distance just a little and offered the woman her arm.
She had to admit, that a lot of the ......finesse and majesty of the situation was probably lost on her. There was probably some awe and such to be had here. IF she were normal, wold she be stunned by the sight of Asami? And a small pang of guilt hit her, but she didn't allow that to bring her down. After all, the happiness was clear on her face. She was getting to spend the day with Asami, what other reason did she need to be psyched?
"This is my first time to one of these things I admit. Got any spots in particular you wanna go to first?" She ventured with a tilt of her head. If nothing else, she seemed amped and ready to head out. Ready to hang out with her friend.

Furukawa Asami
A little surprised that her attempt at an embrace had gone without answer, Asami did not force the issue and instead quickly latched onto the offered arm to draw herself in alongside Lerna. She blushed at that opening compliment, hardly enough to suggest that she was floored by it but it was still appreciated. It did give her ample opportunity to study Lerna’s own choice of apparel too, her general appearance seemed quite unchanged but it seemed that she could change that at will anyway.
“Oh, thank you. I was not quite sure what the tone would be, but at least I am a match for you.”
Given the informality of the situation, Asami was trying to reign in those expectations that she might have about a date - which this was not - and instead focus on having a blast quite like Lerna suggested. Her smile was genuine so it deserved to be met with one of her own, the minutia of noble courting need not apply. Such rigidity would weigh her down, so she cut free and let a smile spill from her lips.
“I am hardly an expert either, I don’t even really know what will be there other than a crowd, but let’s work it out as we go. See where the day takes us.”
Squeezing in just a little, pushing her body into her companion, Asami had to admit that there was a little excitement building in her chest. This was a rare opportunity to break new ground, and she was genuinely glad to share it with Lerna.

Once Asami moved in and gently took her arm, she promptly pulled the woman into a hig, that big smile flashing on her lips as she took a moment to hug the woman, relaxing her hold and letting them settle on her arm, that warm look growing all the more genuine. She'd had .... a lot on her mind. Especially working in Africa. Not only that but .... things had been a little rough now that she'd been using her zanpakuto. Some...complications.
But right now? With this lovely friend of hers at her side?
She could forget about that, and just have fun.
"Heh, I think you're more than a match. But fair enough~ And hmmmm, guess we're both gonna be going in a bit blind. Still, I'm sure we can find everything well enough. And if not, we'll make our own fun." She reasoned, and promptly beginning to lead Asami out of the estate. And ....well..perhaps relying on the woman for directions. After all, she wasn't too familiar with this side of the Sereitei. Not like she exactly had a bunch of noble friends.
"Ahah, I gotta admit I was a little nervous about coming here. I thought that it was going to be really stuffy. But your estate seemed kinda nice. Does any of your family know you're going to the festival with me?" She ventured. Sure this wasn't a date. But she also knew that even associating with certain types was grounds for raised brows among some nobles. And admittedly she really didn't know much about Asami's own family. Not that she really knew much about ANY Noble family. She barely knew anything about the man five, other than some boring history that frankly she didn't even retain.

Furukawa Asami
And there it was. It had taken a little longer but suddenly Asami was wrapped up in Lerna's arms and just for a moment all of her problems felt a little smaller. She was a pretty simple creature when it boiled down to it, despite how sophisticated she tried to present herself, that was one of several things that she was learning about herself lately. Then, as quickly as it started, it was over and Asami was left to lean into Lerna as they headed out of the estate.
"Should I be thanking you for that backhanded compliment about my household?" She scoffed, feigning just a little indignation before she brushed that comment aside, "Anyway, the Furukawa are hardly the most impressive or highly-regarded of noble houses but I do what I can to keep a tidy home. We are a small clan, just my sister and I, and mother too. As for whether I told them, was I not supposed to?"
Some noble houses might have been concerned with their image if they were seen socialising with those of lower standing, but the Furukawa hardly had such a luxury given their position in the hierarchy of such things. Not to mention the fact that Asami would not stand for such things, she had been around long enough to know the value that anyone could have regardless of their name. Lerna was her friend, nothing else really mattered.

Lerna's smile widened just a little at that feinged offense, giving a soft chuckle as the two of them made their way, a little hum escaping her as she paused, a bit surprised that the clan was so ...small? She had assumed that shinigami clans were big things. Guess some families were on the smaller side of things. Still, kinda interesting.
"Oh...huh... no kidding. I thought....well I guess I never really thought about how big Shinigami families were." She admitted, rubbing the back of her head as the pair of them went. Really she knew so little about humans, let alone shinigami. even having spent so much time around them, she didn't really feel as if she understood them very well. She recalled Asami's reaction to some of her jokes and playful banter and she was reminded of the gulf between ....well...the things she'd learned on earth and how things happened around soul socity. Hmmm.
"Nah nothing like that. I guess I was just curious if I needed to mind my tongue about our little trip or not." She chuckled, a little sigh escaping her as she turned her attention to the path ahead of the both of them. A pause given as she rolled her shoulder a bit.
"It's still been kinda strange and surreal. Every day I half expect to suddenly have a sword to my face. I never exactly expected to be ...here. Ya know?" She noted, gesturing around the both of them as she stared ahead, letting her mind wander back to her past life. Well...lives really. As someone on earth. And then before that. That she'd wind up going out to some celebration with a shinigami. She didn't quite know how to feel about it. IT was a surprise. Well... a surprise that it wasn't just some scheme to eat them. Maybe the old her would ave been more surprised with the sincerity.
"How have things been? Stuff has been a little hectic in Seventh Division, but I can only imagine Fifth has also been a little crazy too." She ventured with a tilt of her head.

Furukawa Asami
"There are plenty of widespread, prestigious families too. They come in all shapes and sizes, after all."
Asami did sometimes wonder what it was like for all this to be entirely alien. Some of these concepts that she understood as the simple facts of life were so random and inconceivable to an outsider like Lerna. That was why they were here, after all. Had she any real figment of traditional social customs then this would never have come to pass, but Asami was glad that she was so removed from those. Spending too long in those circles was stifling, now that she had seen a little glimpse of the alternative.
"If you did not talk about it then people would see and they would talk in your stead, better to send a message than leave it to the rumourmongers." Of course, there would likely still be rumours if people cared to make them, but perhaps this way would set Lerna's mind a little at ease. "But the Gotei have enough enemies already to be running around making more. If you aren't a problem then there is no reason to make you one, I reckon."
Of course, the idea that Lerna was - in actuality - some remnant of an ancient monster from mythology was quite an outlandish suggestion. What little Asami knew of mod souls did not indicate that such a thing was practical, but it also made it hard to believe that she was so generally calm and collected. A spirited fighter, yes, but hardly a raging beast.
"Oh, you did not drag me here to talk about work." She teased, an awkward little laugh joining Lerna's chorus. "I can't believe it. Well. It has been a little busy with the appointment of a new Captain and all this Hole business, and then all the other... you know... 'stuff' I have had going on."

Lerna kinda looked at Asami as the woman explained the situation and ...well.. she understood , to some vague extent. Some of the reasoning. But there was also a sortof calm smile on her face that conveyed that she was just sortof enjoying listening to Asami rather than what it was the woman was saying. She parsed the minutia well enough, and for a moment, she very briefly considered what such a thing might be like. Going out of ones way to try and get ahead of rumors? There were rumors? Sure people kinda did that innately, but weren't nobles supposed to be like, above that kinda stuff? At least thats the impression that was imposed by some of the classmates she had. And perhaps a bit of bias from earth.
On earth, the "nobles" really did go out of their way to seem different, but in fact just seemed to caricature their less than noble counterparts. But surely the nobles weren't the same up here?
But uh.... nope. It kinda seemed to be the case. It was certainly a bit demystifying to see that rich souls were pretty much somewhat similar to rich humans. "Huh. I guess more was like...concerned that they would see it like you going out with a toaster." She chuckled. "and uh.......well true I guess we didn't. But uh, admittedly work is kinda all I really know about you. What uh....DO you do outside of work? I guess I'm kinda on the transparent side of things. I kinda just ...hang out. Go out drinking with te boys now and then. Used to get in scraps out in the rukongai, but uh, academy and stuff have kinda put a squeeze on that. what about you?" A warm, intrigued little smile making clar the sincerity. An earnest probe into the woman's more personal activities.

Furukawa Asami
"I don't think that you act much like a toaster, Lerna. Else you have been doing me a great disservice by failing to supply me with suitably toasted goodies."
Asami laughed again, but she understood well the truth that Lerna meant. The truth of the matter was that she would always be a Mod Soul and some people might never see past that were they to know, but that was not a matter that truly concerned Asami. She had already expressed her views on the matter so it felt rather flat to offer some reassurance again, but if it became a problem then she would stamp it out beneath her heel.
"As for what I do in my free time, I suppose I can offer a little insight. Hmm, I do wonder if you will find me quite boring, but you are already committed to this so I won't let you leave me." She paused, fixing the other woman with a sobering stare before she broke into another bemused smile. "Anyway, I am fond of all manner of martial arts, not just practising them myself but also watching others do so. I travel to watch tournaments and have even travelled down to Earth to watch a few Earthen fighting competitions. Recently, I have also gotten into horticulture. Started up my own little garden and everything, just to see what I could grow and what little things I might accomplish."
