“Caw! Caw!”

The sun is shining as ever on Minatumi City. The snow has since begun to melt as the days near the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. The world has been through its trials during the past, and even some at the current time, but for now, this small Oasis of a Harbour is experiencing a blissful morning unconcerned with the ailments everywhere else. Though, not everyone is out and about enjoying the cool winds combatting the warm heat.

Elyss Kishimoto finds herself contained within her quarters with the lazy sun as her source of light, book opened in hand. It has been a few days since her naked adventure through the snow, a few days since she confessed her drastic state to the woman she desperately needed in her life. Well, desperately needed may be too strong a feeling, but Ulv has proved herself to being someone Elyss should cherish instead of abuse. It only took a long while of mental degradation before the youthful redhead realized such, but everything has its way of working out in the end. However, realizing her faults come with new challenges such as figuring out how to improve herself and grow into the person she truly wishes to be. Sigh… Why is the road so long and mysterious?

At least these books provide her with some comfort. Next to her on a small dresser lies a stack of books that she has been reading through. Elyss had forgotten how much she enjoyed reading during her quest to grow, but being forced to slow down allows for one to reconcile with old hobbies. There isn’t much she can do now anyway. Her body’s still a little sore and covered in bandages, annoying bandages that itch from time to time. It’s her own fault though, so…

Bwah. She’d rather focus on the book and wonder if she’ll be receiving another visit from a certain woman. In anticipation, her stony eyes even moved to the door. Maybe today will be a solo day. Maybe not.

THE WOMAN LOST IN TIME

IORI TOKUGAWA

This Ain't A Fairytale 6EdIfMt

Sunlit mornings had often served as a hopeful indicator - a minute sign that signified one's day was destined to be a successful one. Those rays of light were meant to refresh their spirit and rid the mind of the perils from the day before.

Of course, such ideological optimism was only necessary whenever certain events turned your common sense on its head. For the woman traversing the hallways, the latter couldn't be any more fitting. Indeed, witnessing a woman walking through the severe cold in nothing but a hospital gown could do that to a girl - even girls who possessed an indomitable will and fierce disposition.

Armed with nothing but her mental fortitude - for now, at least - Iori was little more than a spectator who witnessed Ulv embracing motherhood. There was no prior experience to speak of between her and Elyss outside of their first meeting, where she had prepared breakfast and the two ended their day with a spirited jog around the serene harbor of Minatumi.

Even so, somewhere within a small part of Iori's mind, she had developed an unexplainable fondness for the fireball of a woman known as Elyss Kishimoto. Was it a crush? Yeah, she supposed that is what one would call it. She could not properly pinpoint what her desires towards Elyss were, or how they would manifest given the current state of the situation at hand. Her condition was what Iori needed to focus on. Dates and romantic encounters could come later if she was brave enough to pose the question.

As it was with their first meeting, Iori had prepared a meal - almost as if it were a habit to her - and walked towards the room, opening the door to greet Elyss and monitor her condition. Judging from appearance and the fact she happened to be reading a book, she seemed to be recovering quite well.

"Yo, Ely. I've prepared breakfast. How are you holding up in this room? I must say, for a fireball, you definitely know how to make an eventful return. A week ago, I had to bumrush Ulv's humble abode. Good to see you've recovered well, since then. Mind if I bother you for a bit?"

It was a question Iori posed for a twofold purpose. One, there was nothing for her to do today that she considered eventful. Midori was off of the radar and isolating herself from everyone to fix her mental state of mind. Ulv was off doing Ulv things. And she was here, in a room, alone with Elyss.

It was like clockwork. She estimated that Iori would appear and Iori appeared. And, of course, the woman had food with her. Ulv was correct. Elyss was correct. They could both count on the displaced woman to effectively take care of such meager things that Elyss fails at doing. She remembered her cereal adventures followed by a heartfelt mother daughter moment. She also remembers what was said moments before Ulv departed from the mansion to Soul Society. Elyss has yet to actually bring that up with Iori or even speak of her plans.

“Hi.”

That’s all she had to say before turning her attention back to her book knowing Iori would make herself comfortable. In all honesty, Elyss had little idea of how to proceed right now. She’s been trying to act normal the long while that Ulv has been gone around Iori, but the thoughts in her mind distracted her far too easily. At first Elyss just figured Ulv was talking like she always did before knowing the full story, but having the idea that someone liked her made things a bit difficult. For one, Elyss found herself accidentally checking Iori out at random: looking at the taller woman’s hair, getting fixated on her build, wondering about her day to day life. It’s all rather annoying, but it distracts her from her own issues at times which is nice, but it only causes more issues in the end.

“Mmm… What’s the meal for today?”

Focusing on something else should help. She can feel her mind wandering to thoughts that Ulv would approve of, but Elyss doesn’t want to have her mind go there again. Focusing on food should help, but she keeps her eyes on her book. Don’t look. Don’t look.

"Bacon, eggs, and buttermilk pancakes. Nothing out of the ordinary. If you would turn around and look at me, you could've noticed that, heh." Iori chuckled as she sat down beside Elyss's bed and placed the meal on the bed. Stretching her arms out to feel relaxed, she kept her eyes locked on Elyss.

She didn't seem to be too responsive yet, but neither did she seem to be against a conversation either. There was so much Iori found difficult to interpret but she didn't want to push the envelope. In truth, she found herself ruminating on her own thoughts in silence as she admired how attractive her beloved fireball was.

The long red hair, the fierce eyes, and her well-endowed body... Iori knew it was wrong to be observing her in a way that felt so perverse but... she couldn't help it! No, Iori. Speak. Say something. Stop letting your eyes and thoughts wander.

"So... the weather looks really nice today, huh?"

Goddamit...

Turn around and notice? Elyss doubted she’d simply notice the food being placed on her lap however. She’d have noticed a lot of things. And, because of that, she didn’t want to look. Well, she did, but she knew that looking would only cause Ulv’s words to echo in her mind over and over until she couldn’t bear the thought of it anymore without clarification. She didn’t desire to bother Iori with such ridiculousness.

It’s rather quiet between the two. It’s not entirely awkward, but Elyss would rather a conversation start up sooner than later. Yet, she doesn’t speak up knowing that Iori is watching her. Maybe the other is just that worried about her wellbeing, and again, Elyss thinks back to Ulv. Why is Iori so okay with coming here and servicing Elyss in such a way? Is there an ulterior motive? Is it just to get on her good side? Does Iori truly just care that much about a mentally ill woman she’s only met once? Is this the power of having a crush? At least, soon, Iori spoke up and stopped her intense staring. Elyss wasn’t sure how much more she could have taken without speaking up.

“It’s the weather.”

Her answer was as lame as the question, but there was a certain awkward humor to that small, quick, and strange back and forth. Elyss couldn’t help but let a small smile form on her lips as her eyes flicked quickly to Iori before moving to the window beside her bed. The book is closed gently and Elyss sighed as she readjusts herself.

“I’ve been noticing the small changes everyday: how only the sun is out in a clear blue sky one day, and, on the next day, how the clouds are out and about moving lazily in the sky. Sometimes it’s windy and other times the breeze is so still it feels like the world is frozen in place. It leaves room for one to think a lot and wonder. You know, I guess the mind is just like the sky sometimes…”

Her mind at least. Sometimes her thoughts are as clear as day, other times, they are foggy and dense. Then, when it’s storming… With another sigh, Elyss turns her attention to Iori fully with an inquisitive look despite the small amount of red blooming on her cheeks. Her eyes are clear and dark filled with fierce intention however.

“Ulv said you had a crush on me. I wasn’t going to bring it up, but your little quip about the weather simply inspired me into a bit of a tangent. You’re also staring at me, by the way.”

To hear Elyss finally say something was a breath of fresh air in this otherwise awkward atmosphere. Her silence was warranted, considering the chaos in her life but still, hearing her speak was enough to ease Iori's spirits as she observed the woman close her book. Readjusting herself, Elyss voiced her thoughts on the weather and its ever-shifting nature.

Indeed, it was uncontrollable and unless one possessed a supernatural grasp over the elements that comprised it, you simply had to follow the flow of what each day would bring. Sunlit skies or skies filled with clouds and storms.

In a word, there was a sense of poetic beauty in the weather and its everchanging majesty; Elyss's words seemed to magnify that notion in the crimson-haired woman's mind as she continued to gaze at Elyss from their minute distance.

...However, the subject quickly transitioned from musings on the weather and onto a subject that hit Iori like an anvil being dropped onto one's toe without warning. Elyss did not beat around the bush when she announced how Ulv had notified her of Iori's feelings towards her.

Was that why she had made the atmosphere so awkward when she entered the room? Why she didn't speak from the first moment Iori sparked a conversation? A nervous chill raced up her spine as she gulped ever so slightly, turning her head upwards to avoid being seen by the woman gazing at her.

For all the indomitable spirit and strength she showed in battle and leadership - when it came to romance and matters of the heart, she was akin to a fish on dry land with no hope of water or even the taste of hydration.

With those onyx eyes bearing down her inquisitively, Iori gathered all the courage she could muster and decided to follow Ulv's advice. If Elyss felt the same, good. Perhaps something could flourish from this. If she did not, however, well... there were other fish in the sea.

"I... well... yeah. I thought she would've offered me the chance to say that myself but I do feel an attraction towards you. It's kind of stuck with me ever since the first time we met."

What would happen now? Only time would tell.

What a stark contrast. It seems having red hair doesn’t automatically make one brash and unnaturally brutish. Elyss wondered what Ulv would say if she were in the room at this exact moment. How would she cause even more awkward air to fill the space between the two women. Yet, Elyss didn’t feel as estranged as she had thought she would after voicing her thoughts and obtaining confirmation.

“Worrying about how information is passed around is an acceptable grievance. I should have allowed you to voice your own feelings first, but I have little time to waste with unresolved situations.”

There’s a strange blankness to her words as she spoke at first which even caught Elyss by surprise. This isn’t an ordinary situation, is it? No, that’s wrong. This is ordinary for ordinary people. That’s the issue here. Elyss has been around Ulv for too long. Her subtlety and emotional tendencies have dulled from overexposure to her mother’s knack for flirtatious commentary. That’s correct. In the past, the redhead would have definitely shown more surprise to the fact that another person wanted anything to do with her beyond being acquaintances. Life has flipped everything upside down, hasn’t it? How amusing and terrifying at the same time.

Raising a hand to her lips, Elyss formed a fist and coughed in an attempt to fix her vocal cords in a way wondering if she simply had something in her throat at first making her tone more dead than usual. Moving her gaze back to the window to look out at the sky, Elyss found her gaze moving to the sun letting the blazing star burn her eyes for a brief moment. Of course, she is forced to look away, but she had also wanted to keep staring until she blinded herself and sighed as she moved her eyes to the flustered redhead sharing the room with her.

“It’s better to look at the person you're confessing to with confidence, you know? You’re not helping me think clearly. It makes it easy to say yes instead of no.”

Great. That time she sounded sad, more sad than she thought she could sound. Her lips even fell as her strong gaze faltered. Slowly, she moved her hands to her chest and sighed stronger than before. She’s not well mentally. It’s not fair to Iori. Elyss shouldn’t entrap someone in her own issues because of sudden feelings or curiosity of those sudden feelings. Yeah. It’s easy to notice how cute another is, or how you’d like to see them in more private lights, but one must factor in a lot before making such decisions. Elyss doubted she could give Iori what the other is looking for. She could barely give herself what’s needed.

“I’m leaving soon Iori. I don’t want to drag someone along as I tackle my issues. I don’t know what’s going to happen while I’m gone. Maybe I’ll become better. Maybe I’ll become worse. You’ve already seen me when I’m not particularly sane, but that wasn’t even the worst of it. I’m sure you’ve factored in something like that, but you should think more clearly if you really want to deal with someone like me.”

Yeah. This is strange for Elyss. She’s never accepted someone nor turned them down, and as badly as she’d like to say yes and try this dating thing and see a different picture to romance than what Ulv has shown her, is this really the right time for such things? With one last sigh, Elyss turned her gaze back to the window realizing that, as more people show that they care, the more it shows she has a lot to work on before thinking she’s worth such.

“You don’t really want to deal with the woman of a mess, do you?”

THE WOMAN LOST IN TIME

IORI TOKUGAWA

This Ain't A Fairytale 6EdIfMt

The atmosphere of the room was unnerving. The tension in the room had become palpable. Silence filled the room as Elyss had finished expressing her true feelings, and her subsequent plan of leaving to go on a journey.

Hearing such an important decision, Iori could do nothing but remain silent as she ruminated on the words with which Elyss used to express herself. To be certain, it was not as if her unexpected news had left the crimson-haired woman disheartened.

There was no expression on her face that seemed to indicate disappointment. No, Iori's expression seemed to belong to those who rooted themselves deep into the thought processes of their mind, as if they were soul-searching or meditating.

Though it was true that Iori was smitten with Elyss, what were the extents of those feelings? Was it a passing fancy? The so-called crush that passes by and is never remembered again? Was it true love?

The all-world, dominating affection one feels when they practically cannot live without the other person in their lives? What was the manifestation of her affection towards her? Iori was surprised that Elyss didn't mention the fact that they barely knew one another.

They had met once before in this household and shared a meal and jogged together. Loving relationships were built on a lot less and happened in unexpected moments but upon her return, she could clearly tell that there was a lot more she needed to know about Elyss Kishimoto. Even so, there was no time to do so if she planned on leaving Minatumi. As such, she was posed with a decision of her own as she contemplated Elyss's question. Somewhat shyly she scratched her head and admitted that perhaps... perhaps it was indeed a minor crush and nothing more. If she had plans of traveling, Iori was in no condition to actively follow her around.

There was still much to be desired. Much for Iori to learn about the new world that had moved on while she was in a coma. She had to restore her magical ability and martial prowess until they stood at the precipice of legends once more. As a warrior worth the mettle she expounded, she owed it to herself to reach the peak of her skill once more. As bittersweet as it was, Elyss has decided on the next step in her life. Iori owed it to herself to stay true to her own path.

"Now, ever since I've met you... not once did I ever think you were a mess. You're certainly an eccentric cookie but I'm no different myself," she added with a light chuckle to ease the tension.

"Truth be told, I'm not the best version of myself that I desire. I woke up from a coma not that long ago and while exploring the world would be something I'd love to join you in, I think it's best if I should stay here. I think that you are very attractive and I really would've loved to have a first date but if you wish to travel this vast expanse known as earth, then I won't stop you. That said..."

Iori walked over and placed a hand on Elyss's shoulder and she grinned widely, raising her thumb up as a sign of support.

"Learn from your experiences, grow stronger from them, and become the very best version of who you truly believe you are fireball. From the moment I met you, I've always felt like you were this tenacious force waiting to explode and that's probably where the schoolgirl crush started. Still, I can't wait to see where life takes you. If you learn to trust that there are those in your corner who love you and want the best for you, you'll become so much greater than you could ever imagine."
