Anastasia
BASIC INFO

NAME:Anastasia Etzel
EPITHET: Nastya Anya
AGE: c.27
SEX: Female
RACE: Human
SEXUALITY: Heterosexual

Appearance

HEIGHT: 5'6 / 168cm
WEIGHT: 119 lbs / 54 kg
EYE COLOUR: Yellow
HAIR COLOUR: Green
SKIN COLOUR: Fair
FACE CLAIM: C.C. from Code Geass

Having maintained good health and routine exercising, Anastasia possesses a fit body, albeit slender thanks to a high metabolism. Investment in physical health through proper eating and beauty products, very few being a tad holistic in practice, provides a supple skin overlaying toned and dense muscles.

Despite her efforts, the rigors of life have not gone unnoticed on her body. Most of Anastasia's scars are in easily hidden areas, but a few still span across her arms, legs, and neck. Most are faint by now, and Anya's exceptionally fair skin tone acts as a camouflage. Usually, light foundation and powder does the rest. Other than scarring, around her waist--at her lower obliques--are some stretch marks attached to what used to be burns, now grafted skin placed in during a few reconstructive surgeries.

Anastasia used to have several calluses and blisters around her feet and ankles, but her time back in civilian life have found them mostly healed, but the skin around those areas are still a bit numb. A few small calluses still exist on the tips of her fingers from playing string instruments, while the ones on her palms and knuckles are completely gone.

Fashion isn't a huge interest for the doctor, but that doesn't mean she can't enjoy looking good. Her preference in clothes aren't to the extent of chic, but still quite tasteful. Anya has a wide range of colours, usually matching them to the seasons. Summer is filled with monochromatic colours and single tone clothes, a few dark warm exceptions here and there. Autumn follows a similar pattern, but the colours are usually lighter and fluffier, like greys mixed with teal, or deep reds mixed with matte orange. Winter is always filled with contrasts of colourful accents with usually achromatic bases. Spring sees a return to lighter shades with a less contrasting pallet, but a variety second only to summer.

Winter-Wear: A black base with faded blue accents

Fall-Wear: hot pink sweater, pencil skirt and tights
(prescription reading glasses, not just fashion)

Personality

Positive Traits:

Resolute
Polite
Adventurous
Empathetic
Negative Traits:

Mischevious
Forgetful
Distant
Gullible

A moderately sociable person would be an apt description. Anya is definitely an introvert, but she isn't fully tilted towards it on the scale. In fact, Anya finds a lot of comfort in conversation, pining for some of that social engagement. The reason she finds even more comfort in the silence of solitude, as if it were her home element, is because the room where all the curtains and doors are closed is the room easiest to be herself in. Most casual conversation finds the woman going along with the flow, pleasantly contributing here and there, but mostly intently listening. In truth, Anya has a lot to say. She's a naturally outspoken individual, with loud thoughts in her head that could speak volumes in few words. But not all the things she wants to say are things people want to hear--and suddenly, the conversation isn't so casual anymore.

Anya prefers not to cause too much of a ruckus or disrupt any pleasantries, and that mentality has driven her to be on the balance between introversion and extroversion, but Anya is not typically someone that sits in the between. A reason for her excellence in leadership roles during her military career is her decisiveness. In fact, standing stagnate in rumination is something that irritates her. She's a woman of action, and though she's also a planner, someone who can take methodical steps to prepare a full-proof execution, her patience is limited. Sometimes a life-saver, sometimes a critical flaw, Anastasia acknowledges that being as decisive as she is isn't always a merit; however, as far as she's concerned, sometimes jumping the gun is going to get you further than sitting down and formulating every possible contingency.

This sort of belief comes off strong-headed, and it's true that Anya's pretty stubborn. But that strong head of hers is always trying to do what it thinks is right, and few things come in the way of that conviction bordering zealousness. Funnily enough, Anya didn't become a doctor because of some "heart of gold". Her reasons were much more selfish in the beginning; it was the process of seeing what she could do, and what she had to do, that the woman grew to love her work and embrace philanthropic, utilitarian, and eventually egalitarian ideals. So when confronted on flaws like her stubborn decisiveness, it can be pretty painful to try and hold a critical conversation with her on the subject unless you're prepared to get nowhere with it.

On the other hand, one of the only conversations that's painful for Anya instead is one on the past. One of the deepest insecurities of hers is how lost and scared she is about the gap in her heart from retrograde amnesia. When asked about it, she puts on a brave face. She confronts the past with dreamy idealism, that the person she is now isn't the person she was. That she'll look to the future to find herself, remake herself, and not be weighed down by her past. In all reality, uncovering the past is something she wants more than anything else. Who was she? What kind of things did she do, what emotions did she feel, what thoughts did she have, who were the people she left behind as a result? It's painful to think about, especially because she knows that the rational, healthy response is to let it go after all--but it's also a scary thought. To just throw away so many years of a persons life. Not just any persons life--her life. Even if she doesn't really feel like it.

History

A scandal concerning a government official running for office in France led Thomas Etzel, a member of the official's party and active participant in corrupt action, to flee the country to New York City. His associates in the U.S. guaranteed harbour, and eventually the scandal blew over. It was during his stay, he met Yuexian, a chinese immigrant going to school at NYU. Beyond education, the main reason for her stay in the city was to avoid an intense war of the Chinese Underground concerning rising gangs and the pre-existing black societies. Her father, a large figure in these societies, sent her off to the States for education and safety. Once she graduated, the two married.

James named his daughter and firstborn Anastasia, Nastya for short--eventually changed to Anya, though her mother often called her Jiqian, or Xiao Ji. The mutual affluence and education of her parents guaranteed an exceptional and low-key childhood. The small family moved upstate, and to maintain low-visibility Anya was often given private education, and as an only child and light of their lives, Anya's parents were very focused on her. This constant doting and expected excellence turned into a pressure that made the girl rebellious and independent. She didn't quite seek freedom so much as more independence and autonomy. These desires led her to join the officer training corps in college, the same school as her mother, where she studied biochemistry and biomedicine.

After university, Anastasia became an officer in the Chemical Corps due to her degree. Shortly into her first year of service, she met James Lorraine, another officer. Their relationship started in training, and eventually long distance as they were placed in different stations. After the first couple of years of long-distance, the two arranged their next duty location to be the same, and they were reunited. A few more years passed during their relationship before they were happily married, with a small wedding including their direct families and very close friends.

Three years went by until the two were deployed under the same regiment. While they were separated by unit, the two were close enough in proximity of deployment to visit one another, and Anya was assured that their love was one strengthened by distance. Frequent letters, per Anya's own personal enjoyment in the novelty of writing, were exchanged. The modern military of the 25th century meant letters were extremely archaic, but the fun of hand-writing was enough to prompt the couple to do so.

During their deployment, Anastasia was met with the unfortunate rumour of her husband's adultery. She soon confronted this in a letter. They recently spent time together over MREs and a very small fire to share intimacy, but Anya was far too afraid of the answer to ask directly, instead opting to inquire through writing. The answer she received wasn't a direct admission, but still a very vague apology. James understood he was caught, and Anya understood he was guilty. The shame, sadness, and more subliminally the stresses of depression under American (Shadow Fall) deployment into Polynesian territories--close to the Yayjuu (at the time) controlled territories (Philippines)--had Anya stagnant in her return letters. James sent several letters, but she never read them, instead escaping through her work to avoid the thoughts.

Any resolution between Anya and James was impossible. On the day the woman resolved to confront and properly discuss with her husband his disloyalty in 2014, the Australia War erupted, and James's company was immediately sent to the warzone. His passing followed soon after, and before she could find closure Anastasia was left widowed.

Her feelings were betrayed, but the love she held for James was steadfast, and the grief was thereon overwhelming. Anya took full advantage of her personal leave, briefly returning to America to visit her parents. Before then, she cut off all contact from them. but the loss of her husband made the woman reevaluate her relationship. Having lost a loved one, she craved companionship and family. Anastasia restored her relationship with her family.

Anya returned to the military, still deeply saddened, but prepaerd for her duties. The end of the Australia War sent her back to the U.S., and her next duty station was picked to be closer to family, to allow her the chance to continuously work on her family dynamic to something resembling peace and closeness, though an awkwardness always prevailed amidst dinners and small gatherings.

This period didn't last long, as she was once again deployed to Iceland following another war with the Japan-based Vanguard. It was during this deployment as a logistics and medical officer that Anastasia faced a life changing event. An attack on a nearby village, rumoured to the Vanguard leadership to be a hideout for an infiltration squad set to conduct an attack on a nearby Japanese occupation, had Anya critically wounded. The attack was indiscriminate--a result of a loose canon in the Vanguard not minding protocol--and as a result, Anastasia alongside several hospitalised civilians and combatants were critically wounded. While most died, Anastasia was fortunately rescued with major head trauma.

The woman spent six months in a coma, before modern medicine resuscitated her. Anastasia was healthy and conscious, but the spiritual effects of the attack left her with retrograde amnesia. Returned to American hospitals, once Anastasia regained consciousness, she was discharged from duty honourably. She returned to her parent's household reluctantly, as she retained no memory of their reconciliation.

With a few months of rehabiliation, Anya returned to medical work, retaining most of her training and knowledge as a doctor to be hired. She promptly left her family household without once more reconciling with her parents. Much of the past half-decade of her life was missing from her memories, though the pictures and anecdotes from close friends and family informed her of what she missed. How she joinined the military, how she adventured on her own for a while, how she had a husband, how she lost her husband. All this, Anastasia understood in the abstract. But, she could never personality understand and empathise with it. James, to her, was just a fairytale stranger.

To get away from the hopes and expectations of a return of memory, Anastasia moved away from America, and to Japan--a rival nation to the United States. It was an awkward, very strange and foreign transition, like if an American in the 2010s was to move to China or Saudi Arabia, but the modern world was so much more welcoming of foreigners than the world of many centuries past. Anstasia hoped to flee most of her past life, both out of fear and the pressure of expectations, and she aspired to start a new life.

Since then, nearly two years have passed.
