What the hell am I doing here?

Ryuzawa's inner monologue sounded downright panicked. It had taken him forty-five minutes to get here, from the Second Division barracks; he had had to stop for directions a couple times, and none of the people he asked for help had believed him when he told them what he was doing heading for the very heart of the First Division headquarters, until he had shown them the letter of summons that had set him on this most unexpected path.

Captain-Commander Suika had requested his company personally.

He didn't have the faintest idea why. Which wasn't to say that the letter hadn't told him - it read that he had been selected for some sort of training exercise - but he would've been fully prepared to dismiss it as a joke if he weren't afraid to refuse the call on the off chance that it was legitimate. He was barely out of the Academy, as rank-and-file as it was possible to be; what could the Captain-Commander possibly want with him of all people? How and when had she even noticed he existed?

Before much longer, feeling very much a fish out of water, Ryuzawa found himself approaching the requested meeting place - a bunker, hidden and quiet, which the Captain-Commander apparently used as a training ground. At least now, he reasoned, he would find the answers to his questions about why the hell he was even here.

Heavy doors groaned open, and with a deep breath to steel himself, Ryuzawa crossed the threshold to enter the cavernous space.

"Captain-Commander?" he called out, trying his best to sound as if he belonged. "Ryuzawa Hogosha, reporting to answer your summons, ma'am!"

From the Bottom to the Top? [Operation: Resolve Generation] [Mini-Event] 6EdIfMt

Artist: N/A- Song: Night Of The Flesh Eaters - Word Count: N/A

The abyss of this underground craven soon breathed in new light, life and energy. What was once cold, barren and devoid of will became devoured by a sense of warmth, determination and fire as embers of bright flames filled the depths of this underground facility. Yet, in spite of this, there would be no hostility felt toward the likes of Ryuzawa. While there was a sense of overwhelming power felt within the energy behind this burning inferno, The Captain Commander yielded a true sense of control of her powers; unlike those who came before her.

Thus, since Captain Ibiki could control this power which could decimate this entire realm in the grasp of her hands, it made her all the more resolved in her focus point of spreading this blessing toward others and embedding the flames of it's mass will toward those with enough determination to want to face her head first. It is why when she emerged out of the inferno of fire that had engulfed the craven, it appeared that she held a jovial smirk across her face. With her amber drenched eyes fixed solely on Aeternus, The Captain Commander pointed her right index finger and gave him the answer he sought right off the bat:

"I'm not one for long-winded speeches, but you were one of the candidates to be on my campaign to pass on the flames of resolve to this generation of Shinigami. So, you are here to receive just that~"

Now face to face with the male, The Suika Devil looked up at the male and held her hand for him to take.

"I don't think we've been properly introduced, but you can call me Miss Ibiki Suika~"

Speaking as gingerly as ever, the woman then let out a small laugh before getting down to the nitty gritty and using her other hand to him a playful punch to the gut.

"And, to be frank, you are here with Miss Suika to find the depths of your motivation and will. It sounds super spiritual, but we are creatures that are dead souls in a world of the supernatural. So to help you find the strength to be a pillar for the Gotei, I'll need to ask you one simple question before we start...."

Standing straight up on her tippy toes, Miss Suika squinted her eyes and leaned in real close to Ryuzawa before uttering this singular question to him:

"What is the source of your will and motivation to strive for more?"

No sooner had Ryuzawa spoken up into the darkness before him than the darkness gave way to stellar fire. The young Shinigami recoiled in fright, both from the sudden blinding light and from the overpowering intensity of the reiatsu that exploded along with it. He raised a hand to shield his eyes, waited hesitantly for them to adjust, and they did so just in time for him to glimpse a diminutive, horned figure step forward out of the flames.

That's her!

Ryuzawa felt his body straighten up to stand at attention almost before his mind could decide that he should probably stop looking so frightened of the woman. Still, in the face of such gargantuan reiatsu, anyone would be made to feel small. He drew another steadying breath and tried his best to look calm; a task made little easier by the forthcoming monologue about the purpose for which he was here. Flames of resolve? Hopefully the meaning of that hyperbole would soon be made clear.

She approached as she spoke, and was soon face to face with him, a hand extended to offer a shake in greeting. He took it, as was only polite, and managed about a shake and a half before the cheerfully smiling Captain-Commander stepped under his hand to sock him in the gut. A playful, ice-breaking strike - if she'd meant to hurt him, he would've known about it - but it pulled a surprised "oof!" from him all the same. Who the hell expects that on a first introduction?

He released her hand and held his tongue for the moment. She wasn't yet finished addressing him. He was quick to collect himself and straighten back up, keeping a level expression on his face and his eyes upon the Captain's to take in her every word. She had chosen him for this. She had chosen him. To do anything less than rise to this occasion would be unacceptable; so when she leaned up to look him right in the face and deliver her million-yen question, he only let his eyes drift aside to show that he was thinking over his answer. A brief pause hung over the pair.

"...Self-improvement," he began, and met her gaze again. "When I first entered the Academy, I felt... lost. Like I didn't quite belong. There was nothing special about me - really, there probably still isn't, not now. But when I discovered my knack for Kido? Everything seemed to fall into place. Grasping Kido is what I'm best at, I can already say that with certainty.

"So what I'm striving for is to keep reaching for new heights of skill in the use of Kido. I don't just want to be the best I can be - one day, I want to be counted among the best the Gotei has ever known."

Somewhere along the line, he had stopped sounding like he felt as if he didn't belong in this situation, and started sounding like he'd never been more certain of anything than the declaration he had just made to Ibiki.

Wew! It seemed as if the shinigami before The Captain Commander was on his P's and q's. Ibiki could sense the intense nature of the male ahead of her because of the fact that he stiffened up around her presence, felt an intense need to stay on guard and let out an almost cute sounding "oof" when the nimble Captain gave him a playful jab to the gut. Indeed, she had her work cut out ahead of her, but there wasn't much of a need to cut him off.

Observation, listening and taking mental notes were important when getting to know her subordinates. You couldn't discern the intentions of a person without paying attention to how they act, speak and carry themselves. Hence, Ibiki remained quiet for the time being and allowed the male to speak ahead of her. As, when Ryuzawa started chatting, it seemed as if he had a hunger for self-improvement. The shinigami wanted to belong, desired to have something special which made him stand out from the crowd and felt that he could find that in attaining the best kido mastery he could to make himself stand out in the depths of The Gotei.

....however, Ibiki doubt that shallow aspiration was what he truly yearned for.

There was something quite more waiting to be discovered by the depths of that desire. In order to be pushed toward serving others, wanting power and hungering to have a place to belong; certain events in his past had to have taken place to form who he is today. Therefore, Ibiki would prod him a bit more as she knew there was more to this than meets the eye.

"Then show me what you got. Fire off your best kido that you can at me."

Taking a few steps backward to gain some distance between them, The Devil Shinigami folded her arms and nodded her head forward with a bright smile on her face.

"Don't worry about killing me or anything like that, but I want you to envision and then tell me what it is that is driving you to want to be the best kido expert you can be."

Those amber-lit eyes of hers were then locked solely on Ryuzawa as her face relaxed over into a smirk.

"Everyone strives for a higher purpose in life: what is the higher purpose for your desire? Is it merely just to attain power to belong? Why do you feel you don't belong? What can this sense of self-improvement for you? What will it look like when you are the master of Kido? Put all of that into the attack and ask those important questions to your spirit."

"Fire off your best Kido that you can at me."

Sorry, what? Did she order what he thought she just ordered?

The request visibly caught him off guard. For an instant, he stared at the Captain as if she were quite mad; at her insistence, though, he collected himself, and remembered that this was the Captain-Commander he was talking to. If she couldn't brush off his most potent Kido as if he'd given her a limp-wristed slap, something had to be very wrong.

Still, that was no reason not to give it his all. After all, she chose him for this.

As she backed away from him, so too did he take a few steps back to create more distance. Should anything go awry, he at least wanted to be out of the blast radius. Ibiki continued to exposit, and he continued to listen. She meant to dig deeper - to question the response he had given her and bring to light the why of it. The idea gave Ryuzawa pause; he looked aside again, his mouth turning in a thoughtful frown.

"What will it look like..." he trailed off. That question in particular was proving to be very nutritious food for thought. What would it look like? "No doubt my name would be very well-known by then... but surely not just because of my knowledge of Kido. One does not, cannot, reach those sorts of heights of renown without distinguishing oneself as a Shinigami in all ways. When I think about it, no master of Kido was only a master of Kido. The Captains and veterans... to survive as long and improve as much as they have, they all need to be masters of every aspect of our disciplines and training, even if they have their specialisations.

"More importantly, they've all forged their own places in the hierarchy along the way, and fostered their own culture of loyalty and camaraderie among their peers and subordinates... You're all famous, in a manner of speaking, and each for your own reasons."

At last, Ryuzawa reached a pause. A look of epiphany crossed his face. "...Is that it? Do I want to use my talent for Kido to create my own place in the Gotei, where I can make the biggest difference...?" That felt right. The more he thought about it, the more right it felt; the more certain he became that Ibiki had led him to a more complete answer. At last, he raised his head to look her in the eyes, and he gave a resolute nod.

"Come to my side, piercing spear of dawn." He raised his hands in front, level with his shoulders, fingers tensed. "Drive yourself forward, and bring the judgement of the heavens with you! Hadō ten!" He clapped his hands together in a strong, decisive motion; when he pulled them apart, a flash of yellow light coalesced into a spear of radiant spiritual energy. "Hikari no Yari!"

There was barely an instant of hesitation in his motion. He raised his right hand to snatch the glowing spear from the air, reeled it back over his shoulder, and stopped just long enough to take aim at the diminutive Captain-Commander. He had to put right out of his mind the admission that this was a futile effort. He wanted to impress her - he wanted to make her feel this.

With a cry of challenge, he pitched the spear at Ibiki's chest!

From the Bottom to the Top? [Operation: Resolve Generation] [Mini-Event] 6EdIfMt

Artist: N/A- Song: One More TIme, One More Chance - Word Count: N/A

It was a tall order to receive from someone in the position of needing to assault their own Captain Commander. Ibiki wasn't a half-wit and could understand how intimidating the aspect of attacking someone such as herself could be to someone without as much raw strength as herself. However, life wasn't fair. In this aspect, if he had goals of achieving the heights that many before him had, he would have to get over this fact, discover ways to overcome his limitations and not let the immeasurable odds of these ambitions of his get snuffed out by the world. That was the only way he'd endure in her mind. If he could not find such a brilliant flame of resolve to cling to even when his whole essence, body, and mind were being crushed under the jaws of this universe; then there was no way he'd live to see through the risk his vision entailed.

"You are still uncertain of what your fully realized vision is. Without that, you will surely fail."

After taking the time to digest what her subordinate had spoken to her, Ibiki did not hesitate to unleash her blunt opinion; even despite it coming off as chipper as ever in the way her voice vibrated with its sense of jovial nature as she smiled longingly at Ryuzawa. He needed to be aware that his reality was not matching up with the world around him and the spirits of those who did make it to the top of their race and beyond. Even if they did not fully realize their ambitions at the start, when they grew to be larger than life, it was not solely because of a need. Rather, it was an immense and nearly delusional belief that their objectives would be met no matter the cost, no matter the sacrifice and no matter the pain.

Thus, with that understanding filling Ibiki's perception of Ryuzawa, she was not fully convinced he understood what this path had laid out before him.

Which -- is fine.

One does not come into existence knowing all the ways of the world from the get-go. Therefore, that was her place as his teacher to instruct him on how to best realize his vision by guiding him along the way toward being the best version of himself that he could attain. Ergo, to help him peer deeper into the resolve of his heart, Ibiki only had one question for him as she raised her right index finger in the air.

"Tell me: what exactly is this difference suppose to be once you find your place?"

...

There was a pause as the lone whisper of a passing wind echoed into the cavern around them. Once the male fully had time to realize the depth of this question, she'd carry forward.

"You have all this power, all the fame and every last skill at your disposal; but what is your reason for amassing these strengths? What higher purpose does it serve? I still see a lack of depth in your resolve and that won't cut it for the people you aspire to emulate."

Then, with an outreach of her hand, Ibiki directed her will to amass a cluster of melting hot energy in the palm of her right hand. After this transference of power took place, The Menacing Devil Girl then made a hard swipe to cut through the kido like butter to further illustrate how flimsy the depths of Ryuzawa's will appeared to be from her point of view. And, with this action, it also presented a challenge: would he lose all of his drive and hunger to advance himself in the wake of this flame being snuffed out? Could he reignite that fire inside of him? The Commander was curious to see that unrelenting passion.

"I hold no delusions that there is a world of difference of power between us that gives me an almost unfair advantage. But even so: are you going to give up in the face of this unfair world? I will not tell you that you will be able to win all your challenge, that you have a chance to become the best shinigami you can be or that you may even live to see the next day. However...."

As the tone of Ibiki's voice grew more solemn in nature, the amount of fire in her voice grew as her ember lit eyes fixed their gaze upon Ryuzawa.

"...this is the path you chose. You can just as easily quit and return back to living a peaceful life. The only way for you to move forward is to accept that this existence isn't fair, fight against it and cling to your will, reason and purpose even when it seems insane. If you do not have something to hold on to even when you are one breathe away from death's grasps, I sincerely doubt you will even make it through the training with me, Ryuzawa."

Once again, she'd point her finger toward the subordinate and asked him yet again this simple question:

"What purpose, hunger, drive or ambition will your soul cling to when your back is against the wall?"

Without warning, The Suika Devil then unleashed a dense wave of spiritual pressure to that had the capacity to send Ryuzawa hurdling backward into the cold cave walls around him. In doing so, the absolute flare, weight and atomsphere of The Suika Devil's power would weigh down on his body until he could muster up some kind of deeper purpose for his will to exist, presist and fight forward toward the future he so hungers for.

This back-and-forth was proving thought-provoking. Clearly, Ibiki had prepared not only her choice of arena, but the words she would use to interrogate her newly acquired students, and get to the heart of their reasons for being here. Her delivery was so chipper, so nonchalant; somehow it only sharpened the edge upon each of her questions, carefully aimed to strike as deep as they could into Ryuzawa's answers.

She even caused him to hesitate a beat longer before he loosed his gleaming spear, but when it left his hand, it flew true enough. At least it did until Ibiki batted it out of the air with a swipe of her hand wreathed in her own burning power. The Kido spear didn't even have time to be sent sailing off in a different direction, and merely shattered under the blow, spinning fragments of light flickering into nothing as quickly as they had been cast forth.

Ryuzawa tried his best not to look stunned. He had half expected her to just stand there, take the blow in its fullness and be no worse for wear, but to break it before it could even do that much? He couldn't lie - that stung. He shook the dumb look off his face, turned his attention back to the Captain as she delivered another indictment of his will to be here. Already his hands were tensing, incantations floating through his head in anticipation of a command to try again.

His focus, as it turned out, was split in the wrong direction. The sudden violent burst of reiatsu that filled the room caught him flat-footed, and flung him with a cry into the wall of unworked stone. He crumpled against the floor, scrambled quickly to try to get back to his feet, but found himself driven to his knees again by the sudden engulfing weight of the Captain-Commander's spiritual pressure upon him. He stared up at her almost in horror. Her reiatsu was stifling - physically suffocating. Just drawing enough breath to answer her seemed a struggle, never mind climbing back to his feet.

"Don't - ngh - think I don't know - what perseverance looks like!" he finally yelled in strained protest. "I've had Kido explode in my face more - gasp - times than I bother to count!" He braced himself against the floor, feeling as if he were pushing through treacle with every movement. "What did I do? The only thing I could do - gasp - if I want to be a Shinigami worth my salt! I picked myself up and tried again!" Gasping for solid breath almost every other word, he tried his best to climb against Ibiki's overpowering reiatsu. Whether or not he would even make it back to his feet surely depended on whether she wanted to see if he could. "And again! And again! Because amateurs practice until they get it right, and experts practice until they can't get it wrong!" He had to wonder - was it getting any easier to breathe under this pressure, or was the Captain just easing up on him?

Judging by the way his day was panning out so far, probably the former.

All the same, he continued to press back against the pressing weight upon his body, trying to get to his feet again; the better to address his Captain-Commander, the better to look her in the eye. Anything less would be unacceptable - so he kept repeating to himself, a mantra that he found to be pushing against Ibiki's overwhelming presence as much as he was.

Anything less would be unacceptable.

"Why don't I - hiss - ask you the same thing, Captain?" he ventured. "What could you have gone through... to reach this peak? Maybe what I need is the perspectives - gasp - of the people I want to emulate. From all the way down here, that might be the only way I can see things as you do. At least until I'm standing up there with you!"

From the Bottom to the Top? [Operation: Resolve Generation] [Mini-Event] 6EdIfMt

Artist: N/A- Song: Heroic Battle - Word Count: N/A
The sensation of pain was the price to pay for something great. It comes in many forms that range from the pain of time loss investing in something great, the anguish from the physical extent one pushes themselves to overcome their limitations, the mental torment of constantly striving to achieve something grand and the taxing effect it leaves on the muscles of the mind; all of this and more leads to the overbearing burden of sacrificing all that you are to achieve something beyond just your vision. Only with this sacrifice can someone from nothing turn into something as this life will always force you to pay a price to achieve what one desires.

Thus, to that end, the raw agony which came with having to present himself as a worthy student to his Captain Commander dawned on the male. To have to stand up against a force which could crush entire realms was not a task which came easily for anyone. And, to that end, it showed there was determination and fight behind his eyes even as he tried to stand the stifling atmosphere of Ibiki's spiritual presence.

"You have fight inside of you, but why are you even standing up again? Even if you only fight for yourself, how strong is that hunger to achieve your ambition?"

In one brief moment, the eyes of Ibiki widened in response to her body unleashing another shockwave of energy. With the grumbling of demonic power crashing through the air, an eruption of sound, rock, debris and raw pressure slammed into the gut of Ryuzawa as The Suika Devil kept smashing her way deeper, deeper and deeper into the core ego, spirit, and self of her subordinate.

"Aren't you certain you'll just burn off if you have nothing more than just the hunger to be the best? Everyone wants that, but they aren't willing to risk everything that they are for it. And much less do they even understand their own reasons for wanting such a thing."

After speaking her peace, The Devil Girl's solemn face turned its fiery gaze to Ryuzawa before her voice came to a cease. It appeared that he was interested in hearing why she even bothered with her own pursuits. This was not a bad question in the slightest. In fact, it got the gears turning inside of Ibiki's own head as her amber lit aura grew more intense in nature just thinking about it. As it caused her to take a pause before she finally decided to give him insight into her own mind operated.

"I come from a tribe of brutes who thrived on the brutality of combat. It's nothing special in the slightest, but I grew to understand that I wanted to do more with my power."

With the clenching of her fist, the power inside of Ibiki grew even more fierce. At this point, the whole of the cave felt like a raw inferno of fire as these flames of her aura made the whole cavern a lit with fire. For this was the raw will of her burning soul coming to life in the material realm as she sunk deeper into her own motives for daring to be the Captain Commander of the Gotei United.

"If I was giving this spiritual blessing of strength, I needed to put it to use to better myself, the people around me and aspire for something grander. I was scared to initially take the lead as being a frontliner for our people, but I saw through war, bloodshed, destruction and pure hopelessness when our realm was brought to the brink of extinction that we needed to unite our people, find our resolve and rebuild what we had lost so that this strength inside all of her hearts does not dissolve and fade into a cold oblivion, Ryuzawa."

With his request given a clear-cut answer, there was no need to peer deeper behind those layers. While many events had occurred in her life to push this pinnacle of power to be unlocked with her physical, spiritual and mental self; they were utterly not urgent to the task of training Ryuzawa. Instead, she was more interested to see if he had actually grasped her motives and to see if there was anything he learned that could be applied to himself from it.

Thus, Ibiki set her stellar eyes Ryuzawa before asking him one final question:

"Do you understand why I fight now? I have more at stake than worrying about being the strongest shinigami, Ryuzawa....."

The longer he spent in front of the Captain-Commander, the harder Ryuzawa found it to keep drawing decent breaths - and not just because of the crushing weight of her spiritual pressure. Everything about her presence in the room bore down upon him, a jackboot grinding him under its heel. Right when he felt like he might be able to struggle to his feet, there came another wave of reiatsu to shake the cavern, crashing over and through him and sending him crumpling to the floor all over again.

This time, there was hardly a thought in his head for trying to get back to his feet. How could there be? Just by willing it, Ibiki was ready to crush him flat; not for another hundred years would he have the reiatsu to even begin to put up a meaningful resistance against this overpowering strength. Even so, he still found the words to speak, to ask his pointed question. He laboured through the suffocating pressure to listen to Ibiki's answer, and when she asked him in turn if he had understood, it was all he could do to stare up at her from his feeble state upon the floor.

"I see," he groaned. "You became this strong because you - gasp - had to. It wasn't a means to its own end." He held his tongue just long enough to make another attempt to at least get up off the floor, and felt like he really was being stomped on. He managed to roll onto his knees, at least, but the suffocating weight firmly kept him there, pushing against the floor with his right hand.

His left, quite of its own accord, closed around the hilt of his katana. He spared just an instant to reflect on that. Even out of reflex, what made him think he would find any comfort in his sword? He couldn't even call it a Zanpakuto in good conscience; he had no idea of its name, try though he had to meditate upon it on restless nights. All the same, his hand seemed to refuse to let go of it.

All the same, somehow, he found a second wind within himself. He pushed anew against Ibiki's smothering reiatsu.

"You had a home to protect, I get that, but I don't - gasp - know if I can say the same. I come from the Rukongai, like so many others. Ordinary as it gets." He paused to catch his breath, continued to struggle toward finding his feet. "...I do still have friends back there, though. Neighbours, bosses... people who were excited for me when they found out I'd been invited to the Academy... Proud, even."

He paused again, his eyes unfocused as he looked away from Ibiki for an instant. "...I never did want to forget where I come from. Wanted to be someone they'd be proud of. Someone my classmates'd be proud of." He gave a nod, permitted himself a smile of reminiscence. "We all promised to follow each other's careers. Meet each other on the other side, you know? Share stories, see how far we'll have all come one day.

"...Damn, I don't even know if any of this is making sense. Do I just... sound like a silly little student with his head in the clouds, to someone who's accomplished as much as you have?"
He paused, shook his head, and pushed again to try to wrestle himself back to his feet. "All I know is I've only just gotten started! I won't be able to look at myself in the mirror if I do anything resembling giving up!"

At the rate things were going, Ibiki felt that her pupil would die if she wasn't too careful with containing the dense pressure of spiritual energy which lay within her fiery soul. Therefore, she saw to enforce her own form of meditative breathing in order to take slow, steady breaths in -- and out. Repeating this process for a few seconds caused the swelling of energy to reduce, but leave enough for the male to still struggle without fearing much for the safety of his life. When composed, Ibiki's eyes fixed on Ryuzawa before melting over into a warm smile.

"That's correct. My strength as a symbol of our races strength came not out of a want, but a need to serve a higher purpose for all those around us."

There was then a pause before that serene smile of hers changed into a mischevious smirk.

"Of course, I'm not asking you to become a hero, either. There is more than one way to meet the goal."

Holding out each of her hands, two spheres of light formed above them. On the right, an orb of blazing orange energy took shape. While on the left, a cluster of dazzling white energy forged. After giving each of these spheres a gentle tap, the woman allowed for them to gently glide over to the side of the male before explaining what exactly they entailed.

"I'm not trying to force my morals on you, but fighter for something grander than yourself will make it easier as we are still human spirits and most humans have a hunger to protect. However, that isn't the only way. If you are willing to invest, sacrifice and give up everything for a goal to the point of turning into a sheer force of absolute will; you can certainly achieve that goal."

After she was finished speaking, the white orb seemed to shimmer as Ryuzawa fumbled through the echoes of his past to figure out what it is he actually fought for and why. And, judging from the conclusion he was trying to reach, Ibiki had already figured path would be best suited for him....

"My background is rather plain as well. That part does not matter. What does matter is what you decide now and how you want to move forward."

With her hands held out, Ibiki stepped closer to the male before each of her hands were on the back of the fiery orbs which circled around Ryuzawa. Her left hand placed it's palm on the cluster of white fire, while the right held on to the bundle of orange energy.

"All you have to do is make a choice: if you go left, you are fighting for something much grander and I can teach you how to instill those values in yourself as it sounds like you still have a desire to turn yourself into a symbol of pride for the people where you came from."

Then, there was a pause before that foul smirk overcame her face once more; making the woman seem almost demon like.

"Or, you can forsake all that, fight for yourself and give up everything in the pursuit of this one goal. Transforming yourself into a monster of pure resolve to achieve your ambitions. I won't judge you either way as all I care about is seeing what your willpower will mature and develop into."

And, with a ginger laugh, the woman concluded before adding these final words.

"Ultimately: the choice of how you evolve from here is yours, Ryuzawa."
