Chasing Ghosts [Sho/???]
Wed Jan 10, 2018 7:28 pm
How many months was he going to let this go on for? How many more months would he spend wasting away in dive bars drinking away the pain till he finally reached that point to where he would no longer feel the faintest itch of despair that had become his day to day neutral? How many more women would he chase around in a drunken haze only to wake up the next morning thinking that his perfect ten was more of a three honestly as he glanced over at them from the hotel room bed? How many more nights of debauchery? How many more bottles of jack? How many more? To be honest, Sho had none of the answers that he needed, not a single damn answer, and as much as he would love to find some semblance of actual stability to his life he knew for a fact that there was none coming for him. And to be quite honest...he was beginning to get used to the idea of not having any sort of stability. He was in fact loving the feeling of throwing all caution to the wind and actually just letting the current of the world drag him along for the ride like a ship without a sail.
It was exciting to say the least. The thrill of not knowing where you might be the next day or how many shots and/or mugs of beer you could take before even a man with a high constitution like himself had to call it quits. But even that thrill was beginning to dull. The feeling of getting plastered, the women, and the thrill of the unknown were beginning to ware pretty thin for him even though he enjoyed them. It wasn't like they didn't do their job of making him forget what had happened to him or more importantly what had happened to his squad mates, but now it was taking more and more to forget. More women, more booze, more thrills. He was beginning to self-destruct and he knew that, but he knew why things were dulling. Why things weren't having that normal kick like they used to:
Zwei
The name belonged to the being who had murdered his squad, caused him deep psychological trauma, and had left him the lone survivor of a failed mission to keep the peace. Peace. What a funny word. Sho hadn't known peace for quite some time and he wouldn't know peace for even longer as long as that monster Zwei was walking around. Revenge was a dish best served cold and this particular dish had been frozen at this point and Sho just wanted to stuff Zwei's damn face with it. Yet, despite his best efforts to find the little shit, Zwei was missing. A ghost flickering out of existence, disappearing from those that sought to bring him to justice. The last Sho had heard, he was with Monsuta (not that it mattered to the man who wanted to put a gun to his head pull the trigger till there was nothing left, but a splatter of gore and bone splinters). No, what mattered was that he was gone, and with him Sho's last safety net was slowly eroding out from underneath him.
Self-destruction didn't sound bad at this point to Sho though. Maybe he would get to see his squad mates again in the realm of non-existance that awaited him when he finally punched his clock? The thought was beginning to become more and more intriguing, the bottle of pills, and a loaded gun seeming like more and more of a better chance at finally releasing him from his suffering. Yet, the need for revenge kept his will to survive firmly in charge. Every time he got close to doing the deed, the thought of Zwei standing victorious over him, and mocking him for being so weak willed filled his mind and he would stop. He couldn't let the little shit have the last laugh, oh no, he would be a wrinkled bag of flesh decaying from old age before he allowed that mother fucker the satisfaction of seeing him off himself. He would keep on living, drinking, and flirting with anyone with a nice rack until he had seen his mission complete. Once that mission was done then and only then would he decide if his life was actually worth continuing.
It was with in that state of mind that Sho had decided to dress himself up fancily. Putting on a burgundy suit and collecting his severance money from the Vanguard in hopes of enjoying himself at a high class club. He was a man who usually liked the dive bars, they were less costly, and more his style, but that particular evening he wasn't looking to drink himself under the table and hit on every girl who happened to show any interest in his old Vanguard war stories. No, tonight he wanted to relax, and try something new. Maybe a new thrill was what he needed and maybe a change in scenery while he was at it! So, as he entered the club, and took his seat at a table, he would light up a cigarette. It wouldn't take too long for a waiter to find him and before the waiter could even ask what Sho wanted he had his order:
"Bourbon shots and keep them coming...I'm pretty sure it is going to be a long night."

THE LONE SURVIVOR
Sho, who had came for a nice night of drinking, partying, and all out debauchery had not expected a compliment as soon as he had walked in the door. Especially from a clear ten who had not ingested copious of alcohol at that. "You're looking pretty fine yourself.", Sho said not skipping a beat and only turning his head slightly to take a good look at the source of the pleasant voice filling his ears. She gave him a wink and a smile, the double play of a girl that was interested in having a good time with the right guy, and tonight? Well tonight, Sho was probably the luckiest guy in the club. He knew this because a few of the other guys stopped to gawk at her as she walked on by them, which was understandable because girls like this didn't just grow on trees, and they sure as hell didn't just approach just anyone. So, he would take his seat, and order his drinks, reminding himself that he would have to go look for that girl, and get cozy with her in a bit.
At least he thought he would have to go looking for her, but low and behold she had decided to take the initiative and approach him once more. He did like a lady who took the first step, it showed courage, and to a former soldier like himself courage was an admirable quality for company. In fact it had been a while since he had actually had a conversation with a lady without being shitfaced or vice versa. So, to him this was quite the pleasant change. "You're wasting no time, eh? So you want to relax, have a few drinks, and maybe dance a bit I'm taking it? Well, I'm just gonna let you know now... I'm a horrible dancer. My old squad mates always complained when I stepped on their toes, but you can't blame me for being born with two left feet, am I right?", he said casually as he stood up from his table as the waiter arrived with the first shot of what would be many.
"Sure, I will keep you company. I would be an idiot to decline an offer from someone who has good fashion sense and knows what she wants. So what are you having? Drinks are on me this evening.", he spoke smoothly and calmly, after all even sober he was a professional lady's man. At least that is how he thought of himself. Though most people would call him an opportunist and realists would probably call him a manipulator, in reality in the presence of beautiful women, he was putty. Taking the shape of whatever they needed him to be: a friend, an ally, and in some cases a lover. Tonight, Sho would play it by ear, and allow the young lady to dictate how the evening went. If she was merely looking for a guy to talk to, then he could do that for her, and wouldn't mind it too much. If she was looking for more? Well Sho wasn't going to say no to that, was he?
"The name is Sho Fuya and what is your name, gorgeous?", he asked as he gave her a look over as only a man who could appreciate just how amazing a lady she was could before downing the shot in a single gulp.

THE LONE SURVIVOR
"Nothing quite like a lady who knows what she wants and who she wants to spend her time with.", Sho said as he folded his arms around his chest after casually putting the shot glass down on the waiters plate. The waiter nodded, knowing all too well that he wanted more shots, and knowing all too well that now that Sho was tabbing the bill for the both of them that he would be busy for most of the night. Hopefully they would tip well. "So we are both horrible dancers! That saves some time!", Sho exclaimed with a laugh as he listened to the young lady order her favorite drink. While not a fan of the fruit flavored daiquiris, he was at least happy that she wasn't ordering some small drink, and actually choosing to enjoy herself. She seemed, at least to him, to be a pleasure to be around, and somebody who would be a riot to hang out with. Guess it really was his lucky day!
"A beautiful name for a beautiful lady.", Sho said as he complimented both her name and her in a casual tone with an edge of charm. Sho may have been a broken guy deep down inside, but he wouldn't allow that to drag down his charm, or effect his personality. He would keep that side of him roped off for the time being, as if he started going off on about his past life he doubted that she would stick around for long. Such was the nature of his depression, he desperately wished for attention, but knew that if people got too close they would see him for what he really was, and leave him. It is why he had taken to one night stands so willingly, sure it would be nice to have a lasting relationship, but how could he when he was too afraid to show anyone just how damaged he was? "Its a guy's job to pay for the drinks, as misogynistic as that sounds. What sort of guy would I be if I just let you pay for your own drinks on your birthday. That wouldn't be right.", he said with complete honesty.
When was the last time he had celebrated a birthday? He couldn't quite remember the exact date. Everything was clouded by a thin veil of drunken haze. When she finally offered him a seat, he snapped out of the train of thought that he had, and took a seat not across from her, but right next to her. After all if they were going to enjoy each other's company then they might as well be close, right? "I'm not here celebrating or anything like that. I just came here to have a drink and calm my nerves, but now I will be drinking to celebrate this chance meeting.", he said as the waiter arrived with another couple of shots for Sho and a large cup, complete with umbrellas, containing the daiquiri that Kirino had wanted. "Lets have a good time and celebrate your birthday together.", Sho said as he went to down another shot of bourbon as he noted her looking at all the lights and her seemingly enjoying the music.
"Is this your first time at a place like this? If it is...well it would be a real shame if you didn't get the full experience, eh? Maybe I can afford to dance this once, I will pay for the medical bills if you buy me a new pair of shoes after.", Sho said with a slight chuckle as he downed the second shot like it was nothing. He was an experienced drinker and wasn't even close to his limit, in fact he wasn't even buzzed.

THE LONE SURVIVOR
She kept glancing at him, as if trying to read him on some deeper level, and that concerned him quite a bit because if she dug too deep she might just see his terrible secret. He was fond of her a bit, as she had chosen to spend time with him, and hadn't even required even an ounce of alcohol to make that decision. By default that made her leaps and bounds more impressive than the vast majority of the women he usually met within these sort of places. Which in itself was a blessing because as much fun as he had with the drunken degenerates, he was much more fond of having a conversation with a beautiful girl with an actual head on her shoulders. It seemed to be rare, at least to him it seemed rare, but then again it was probably because he just didn't go to the right spots to pick up a girl like this, and instead had settled for low end dive bars.
That is when she began to speak about some of the social standards that had been in place when she was alive and he found himself listening. Not checking her out, not grinning, and half paying attention to the words she had said while wondering what she looked like naked. Not that he wasn't wondering that, he was a man after all, but he found himself riveted by her speech as she babbled on wildly before she finally realized she had been going on for far too long about this. "While you may be right that the cultural shift for that particular generation may have ruined a lot of beautiful things it was still a necessary step to bridging the gap to finally getting this level of equality. That's not to say they were right or wrong...still it did throw society for a loop for a while as most social movements do before they finally right themselves and everyone adjusts. Still there were good things that came out of it too.", he spoke with ease, just being like the old him, and not the broken down man that he was now. It seemed easier to be that way with her, so much easier to just be the old him, and not the new him.
As she took the drink from the waiter, he casually brought his arm to be around the headrest above her, before sliding down until his arm was just inches away from making physical contact around her body. But that is when she surprised him by nudging into him, she had taken the initiative, and he without hesitation brought his arm down till it rested around her shoulders. The warmth of her body next to his bringing thoughts to his mind that weren't too gentlemen like. "Alright, no dancing for now...we can make fools of ourselves later. Also, don't be afraid to speak your mind on a subject. Its nice talking someone who actually has a head on their shoulders for a change.", Sho said as he tried his best to think of just how much he wanted to tell her. A part of him wanted to tell her everything. To just let all of the story come flooding out so that it would be out in the open, but the other part of him was worried about how she would react to hearing just what sort of man he was. How would she react knowing he had been hunting the monster who killed all his friends, his family, his squad mates obsessively for so many years only to turn up nothing? How would she react to him admitting that the real reason he was at the bar was to drink his pain away and keep his mind from going to a dark place?
It was the fear of being labeled by somebody he found to be attractive, smart, and interested in him that drove him to almost consider not telling her, but she needed to know. She was too nice of a person to drag her through all of this without being honest if it was going to be more than just a one night fling. "Well, you want to know about me? Its kind of boring, but I'm willing to spill the beans, especially with an incentive of getting to know you better.", Sho said with absolute honesty as stroked his chin with his other hand while his arm was draped around her. "I am Sho Fuya, as you already know, and I was born into a rich family of engineers and scientists who specialized in theoretical energy applications. I, believe it or not, was a scientist before becoming a shinigami. I am an expert in theoretical energies and their many applications and helped design the prototypes for defending cities from Hollow and Arrancar attacks. The reason I'm not known too well is because the guy...Appling took all my clout and recognition and then the Yuudeshi family one upped me.", Sho said with a wink and a nod of his head. He looked at her patiently, wondering just what story she would tell him about herself.
He found himself quite curious about her origins.

THE LONE SURVIVOR
She seemed excited that he had not just shrugged off her babbling as a sign of insanity, something he found kind of odd, but her leaning into him to share his warmth had him thinking other thoughts at the moment. He was far too enamored with the young lady to even care that she might reject him at this point. She was far too beautiful, far too smart, and far too eccentric for a guy like him to be worried about how she would take what he had to say. She would judge him, as most of the sensible ladies would, but he doubted a lady who was as educated as her would hate him for being driven by a need to get revenge against his squad's murderer. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, much like a man holding the most precious thing in the world to him would do, and kept her as close to him as he possibly could. He did wonder what her reaction would be when she learned the truth, but she would have to learn the truth about him if she was going to be something more to him than a casual meeting in a club.
"I'm really surprised you are as smart as you are, most of the intelligent women tend to have found someone for themselves, and tend to avoid me. They think I'm some kind of player and for all accounts...sometimes I am, but really...I'm just lonely. I've had so many horrible things happen in my life that...well...its hard to find someone to just talk to or be around who can take your crap. Who can understand what you are going through, you know? So I turn to the drink...", Sho uttered as he held up another shot of bourbon and downed it. "The clubs...the bars...the women... all of it is just good enough to take the edge off, to dull the knife of what I've gone through just enough to avoid killing myself with it.", Sho finished as he looked at her to see her reaction to what he had just said. He probably had came off as a bit sad, but that is because it was sad. He had lost so many people close to him and no matter the beer, no matter the girl, and no matter the setting the pain just didn't go away. That emptiness he felt from losing all those things wasn't going to be easily filled, but looking at the girl he was holding in his arms...well maybe there was a chance he could at least be semi-normal again.
Not that he was ever truly normal to begin with.
"Alright, you want to know more? Okay... it surprises me you're a noble because after I became a plus it didn't take long for me to be brought to the Rukongai. I spent some time there before joining the academy where I excelled at Kido, but was never really able to do more than that. I took leave from the academy to hone my physical skills so that I could return and become a full fledged shinigami and after twenty or so years of that? I was able to do it. I signed up with the fifth division and operated within the confines of the kido corp for a while before I decided to leave. They never really liked me there anyway, I was a thorn in my captain's side. He always reminded me that though I had the skills, I was a little too rambunctious for his tastes. Authority and I have never got along... I tend to like to do things my way or no way at all.", he said as he downed the last shot he had been given, still not even close to feeling a buzz, but none the less feeling like he didn't need the drinks to feel better. Just as long as she was by his side, he felt strong. Just like the good old days.
"So, Lady Asashima...", Sho said teasingly with a smile on his face. "What brings you down to the world of the living? Shouldn't you be locked up in some royal palace with royal suitors pledging their undying love for you and hoping to win your hand?", Sho said with a chuckle, all in good fun of course. "Just what would the other noble houses think if they saw you here with a guy like me?", he said before leaning in to whisper in her ear: "They would probably be jealous, am I right?"
