Once Upon a Time in Mexico (Open)

Steiner, after finally figuring out how his powers worked, and beginning his journey to becoming his own ideal hero found himself wondering just what he should do now that he had gotten this far. It had occured to him that staying the safest places was not the best way to cultivate his abilities or the best way for him to grow as a hero. Instead, Steiner decided to fly out using his ability to fly (it still surprised him that he was able to do that), and after what seemed like hours upon hours to days upon days of flying, then stopping to rest, and then flying some more, Steiner arrived in Mexico. Why had he chosen Mexico, why had he flown half-way across the world, exhausting himself in the process, and getting berated by his Ziamichi spirit the whole trip? It was because he got a funny feeling.
It kind of reminded him of the time that Cirno had spoken to him in his head and had called him to the mountain top to begin this magical journey he was on, but this time it was just a feeling. Like a nagging feeling at the back of his head telling him to fly here as there was something he had to do or someone he had to meet. So here he was! In Mexico with absolutely no idea of why he was here other than he felt like being here. You are a complete idiot. This feeling you got, I can tell you think that someone is calling out to you, but no one is. The voice of Valus in his head was always a refreshing feeling, kind of like a warm breeze of air tickling your senses as he spoke in his deep baritone voice. Though Mexico was warm, much to warm to think it was winter, it still was refreshing to feel that warmth. We could be training right now. Getting used to your powers, but instead here we are on a whim. This could be a trap or even worse could be absolutely nothing!
Valus wasn't completely wrong, but Steiner had to come here, he was compelled to do so, and something about this compulsion didn't make it feel like there was any maliciousness to its' nature. Calm down, Valus. I feel like we can handle any trap set for us. Besides if things get too rough we will just get the hell out of dodge. Steiner spoke to Valus inside his mind, trying his best to calm the worries of the century old spirit. He could only imagine that Valus was scowling, but none the less Steiner was in control, and they had made a pact for him to help regardless of where Steiner's journey took him. Thus, the argument had been won before it had even began. If this is a trap...I will be telling you "I told you so". And with that the voice of Valus went silent. Steiner smiled, it was nice having someone that actually cared for his well being on his side for a change. Though they didn't get along much, he knew that Valus had his best interests at heart, and was only looking out for him, so that made him feel better.
But he had to get to the bottom of things. He had to know why he had been drawn to this area, this specific area of Mexico. It confounded him and though it might be a trap, he needed to know these things. So, with Excalibur clutched tightly in his palms, drawn from its' position on his back, Steiner continued to move forward into the unknown. He, all the while would keep his eyes on his surroundings, making sure to avoid any potential nasty surprises that could be out there waiting for him. Because though he didn't think this was a trap, there was always the possibility that it was, and as such he always needed to be prepared. At least that is what Valus had said during their early morning training exercises that usually ended with Valus mentally face palming and shouting at him till he got a headache. Yep, that sounded just like a normal day of training with Valus, but he needed it truth be told. He was still young, only twenty years of age, and he wasn't the most disciplined or skilled fighter in the world (That had been proven during his training exercises with Murai), so he accepted the headaches as part of his training, and used them as motivation.
After all, avoiding being scolded for not doing something right was enough motivation in itself. As Steiner continued to walk, he began to feel like maybe Valus had been right. That this was nothing and that he was just a fool for having flown here, but he just felt like that couldn't be true. That something had to be here and that he needed to find out just what that "something" was.

"Spittin' fire like a tongue twisted dragon."
Venturing into Mexico seemed like a good idea at the time. The time before she decided to step into the garganta created before her eyes and flash step the path plotted. Kai specifically requested Rais (a companion from the days of long since past) to complete the task of his fiance's cousin. As she sips carefully from her dry pina coloda, she activates the file sent to her within the recesses of her phantom brain. Just as she begins fishing through locations and whereabouts, a silent waiter sets her bill on the table, murmuring his thanks in Spanish, then turning swiftly to bus another table. Kai sets her glass onto the table, leaves money on the smooth wood, and moves swiftly outside the door.
Her arms stretch above her head, the movement languid and drawn out. Skimming through the request file, she can very well that this is a task that will require patience, but not skill. Rais' cousin- so to speak- wanted a roster of all products that was shipping to Mexico and thus into this town. Or so he believed. He listed coordinates that she marked as points of interest using her radar technology. Each coordinate housed pieces of the material that he managed to scavenge during his own investigation. However, he couldn't continue due to his fears of the Cartel's involvement and possibly even more.
Kai tugged one hand through her hair. The closest was just about…
...in the middle of the desert. Great.
Casting her eye to the few people lingering around her, she exhaled. A small fraction of her reiatsu centered onto her feet, igniting the beginnings of the technique she would perform. In one blink of the eye Kai vanished. Her presence no longer felt other than the wind tailing after her. Her muscular frame appeared again along the edges of the town. ‘Couple of clicks from here, then..’
‘This is a set up, cupcake,’ her Zanpakutō, Zetsumetsu, growled.
‘Oh?’
Flashstepping took little to no effort as she approached the location. Prickling along the back of Kai’s neck alerted her to the presence of another spirit of some sort. She snorted at the idea of a challenge as this spirit didn’t even really show more power than her recruits, at most. Her thoughts flew to ‘Metsu, chastising him for even attempting to raise her hackles about someone as benevolent as this. Her Zanpakutō sighed. The longer they stayed within the confines of Mexico, the less he argued with her. It could have to do with the area, too. On her arm, the radar rang (a sound only heard inside the confines of her mind) as she arrived a few paces behind the boy.
Dressed in loose-fit cargo pants, mud colored hiking boots, a Johnny Cash tank top, and her cloak of enchantment- she looked like she your average spring breaker. During the month of January. Her cloak masked her spiritual pressure entirely, so unless her turned around, the boy wouldn’t have noticed her at all. Good! What a perfect opportunity to have some fun.
Kai outstretched her arm to her to allow her Zanpakutō to materialize into her palm. Zetsumetsu groaned in protest but nonetheless appeared at his wielder’s request. The hilt of her sword was gripped tightly in her palm. Without unsheathing her sword she swiftly and quickly aimed to bonk the boy on the head with an exclaim of, ”Morning sunshine!” If he turned around, he would be giving rather intimate, painful action to the her sword.

Steiner had arrived in Mexico for unknown reasons. Be it some kind of cosmic coincidence or some sort of twist of fate, it really didn't matter at that point. The only thing that mattered was that he was here and he was going to make the most of his first experience on the other side of the planet. In truth this was the first time he had ever really been in the "West", sure he had been to Europe once, but this was truly the "West", and he didn't know much about this area in general. Yet, he seemed to enjoy the brisk walk through the evening air, which was chilly, but a welcome change the to the warm climate he had been hanging out in over the last few weeks. Are we sight seeing or are we going to do something that actually matters? Like looking for the thing that called you here in the first place?
Steiner could easily discern the irritation of his partner and though he could tell that Valus was uneasy, he continued forward trying his best to ignore the frustrated Ziamichi spirit to the best of his ability. To be honest, he needed some time off. A break away from the daily grind of "slash this tree" or "run through this obstacle course" that had become his life. It wasn't that he minded training, it was just that a guy needed a break every once and a while, and this was his opportunity to not only get a real vacation, but to also get some peace of mind. After all, he had been called here for a reason, right? He kept walking forward, tightening the collar of his coat against a rather random gust of cold night wind. He shivered a bit, trying his best to bundle himself up more in his own coat, but failing to do so. It wasn't like Steiner's clothes were remarkably capable of keeping him warm. In fact, most of his clothes had holes in them from his training exercises, or rather, his failed attempts at certain exercises. He didn't mind though, it wasn't like he really cared about much more than his coat.
His prized possession was his foster father's coat, an old-world military jacket that had been handed down to him by his own father. Steiner loved this jacket and when it got scuffed up or needed stitches he made sure to give it the attention it deserved. It was the least he could do because he had been given something so precious. It was at that moment that a particularly strong gust of wind caused Steiner to have to turn his face away from the direction he was facing, and in that moment he fell victim to a dirty prank.
BAM! Steiner Franz received a face full of scabbard and fell back on to his rear, his hands instantly jumping up to grab a hold of his nose which had been the center piece of the assault. As he held his nose, Steiner's eyes filling with tears, not because he was upset, but because of the stinging of the wound, he would look to see his assailant. It was a young lady and oddly, he could not sense her energy. The trip may have been worth it after all! Shut it. Steiner got back up to his feet, rubbing his nose and glaring holes into the face of the lady who had only moments ago struck him out of the blue.
She looked like a prototypical human, but the fact that he couldn't feel her energy, and the sword in her hand made him question that logic. Just what was she? Another Arrancar? No, this girl had no bone protrusions and lacked the Hollow hole which most Arrancar showed off like a badge of honor. As his mind raced through the possibilities of what she could be, he continued to stare at her, awkwardly. A few moments passed until Steiner realized what he was doing, shook his head, and then looked away. "What was that for?", Steiner said to her, still feeling his nose, but less now than before. The pain was subsiding, but Steiner still felt that his pride was hit by the attack more than his physical body. That is what made this particular meeting even more painful. "Normally people don't hit each other out of the blue, you know?", he continued as he removed his hand from his nose.
Steiner put his hands in his pockets, mainly to try, and get any warmth that he possibly could, and secondly to try and look tougher. He had already got off on the wrong foot with his assaulter, but he was not going to allow himself to seem like he was weak. Heroes didn't look weak after all and they always had to look like they were strong even in their moments of weakness. So, Steiner decided to try his hand at bravado as he awaited her response. Smooth move.

"Spittin' fire like a tongue twisted dragon."
Wide eyes glazed over from the tears held within them. She snickered viciously as the male before her rubbed away the pain blossoming along his nose. Instead of speaking immediately, or confronting her, he studied her closely as if waiting for something. Taking a few steps back, she let herself become immersed in the world around her. In distance someone addressed by word- the boy she figured, but her attention planted onto his spiritual energy. There was potential laying beneath it all. You could on a handful of things with Kai and scouting was probably the first. Her pupils must have shrunken considerably when she stepped outside of the reality surrounding her. Those same pupils returned to the natural size as she focused on her new-found stranger.
Again, she allowed herself to take in his spiritual energy noticing how it clashed against the Arrancar-appearing energy she was familiar with, back at the base. 'Speaking of the base, I need to find the evidence before this kid does.' His shivering did not go unnoticed by her. Smirking as she had just snatched up a canary, she circled the boy, eyeing him hungrily. Not particularly in a sexual sense, but strictly like that of a predator. When she spoke, her voice was lilted, swaying along the winter air. Gusts of wind bellowed between them.
"We're definitely not normal people, you and I."
She stopped in front of him, narrowing her eyes, even going so far as to place her hands behind her back. Living up to quite a few of her nicknames, she tilted her chin upwards as if to dare him to challenge her. Another spiritual pressure raised the hairs on her neck. Realizing who it was, Kai held up a hand before Naozane- her trusty pink falcon- decided to peck the poor kid's eye out. Wrinkled claws settled onto her shoulder much to her annoyance. "I thought I told you stay behind, Naozane."
Naozane opened his beak, leaned close to her face and retorted-
"Bird-bird."
"You're a damn lie. Hey, kid," both the Colonel and her companion. "I'm Axis. The rodent on my shoulder is Naozane. Since you're not doing anything particularly extraordinary with your life at the moment-" She paused here for added dramatic effect.
"How about we make a trade, eh? If you help me, you'll get something worth a shiny penny." Kaida settled her weight onto one foot, her arms crossed casually over her chest as she awaited his answer. This wouldn't be the first time she asked for someone's help. Sure as hell wouldn't be the last, either.

Regardless of how he felt at the moment, the fact that this lady was laughing at him after she had smacked him in the face with her sword made him feel rather disappointed in himself. In fact getting laughed at shattered what little confidence he could exude from his physical stance in that moment as he reverted to a more embarrassed state almost instantly. He felt pathetic that he had been smacked in the face like that or that she had got up close to him without him having felt her presence. It made him feel like he definitely needed to train more, but more than that it made him feel like that if she really wanted to, she could have taken his life in that moment without little to no regard about him. That was concerning to say the least. Get over it kid...we will work on your sensing prowess when we get back to Karakura, for now just act as smooth as you can, and just deal with the humiliation with grace.
It was easy for him to say such things, but Steiner didn't like the feeling of humiliation he had at that moment, his cheeks red with embarrassment, and his eyes stinging from the red hot tears coming from them. Still, he straightened himself up, and tried to at least have a bit of dignity about the whole situation. He wiped the tears away quickly on his coat sleeve and then took a deep breath. As she began to circle him like a jungle cat stalking its prey, it made Steiner feel uncomfortable, but now that he knew she was there his senses were on red alert, not just his spiritual sensing, but his actual sensations such as touch and taste. He would be prepared for anything, especially if she decided to jump him, and attack him right then and there. Idly, his left hand reached for the hilt of Excalibur, which hung on his left hip already ready for action if things decided to south fast. She told him the obvious, they weren't like anyone normal people anymore, and that was the feeling that Steiner had felt for sometime after getting his powers.
He had tried to integrate himself back into society with the rest of the people in Karakura, but he just felt so different to them. It was the duality of the whole situation regarding his soul, there were two of them inside, and in that way he seemed to be a bit different than the other beings who had powers. Though that made him different, it didn't make him feel lonely, in fact he embraced the duality nature of his spirits, and didn't mind being a "special snowflake". She tilted her head up, as if daring him to keep calm, and be daring. It was the dare and the challenge that kept Steiner in motion, he wanted to be a hero, and if he was going to back down from this prankster, he wasn't going to get very far. He knew there was indeed going to be a difference in power between the two of them, anyone who could completely make their powers fade out, and fly under the radar such as she had was more than likely powerful in their own regard. Yet, he stepped forward, and grunted his reply: "So we aren't the same as the locals...that doesn't mean we can't attempt to be normal in some way shape or form does it?"
He watched as a pink falcon...wait a pink falcon? Things like this just didn't exist, right? He had never seen a pink falcon in his whole life, but there was one right in front of him, and it confounded him. Yet as the bird went for the attack, he would step back, and dodge his head around to the best of his ability to dodge the potential assault from the bird of prey. "Hey, cut it out!", he shouted at the predatory bird as he saw it fly over, and perch on its' owners shoulder. He listened to her words, wincing as he felt the areas around his eyes, and listening to every word she was speaking. "So you are doing something out here? And want me to help you for money, after you attacked me, and your bird just tried to gouge out my eyes with its' sharp beak."
For a moment Steiner just stared at Axis with a stern glare, but then his features softened, and with a deep breath, Steiner spoke up again: "If you need help, why not just ask? I don't need money or anything like that...if it is something important and you really need my help to do it, I will be more than happy to assist." As he finished saying this, he flashed the lady an thousand watt grin and then extended his hand for a handshake. "I'm Steiner Franz, crowned the Hero of Honor by Cirno Iramasha...it is a pleasure to meet you!", he said cheesily with his hand extended. It didn't feel very right to call himself that since he hadn't done anything heroic yet, but none the less, Steiner felt the need to be cheesy after the assault he had just endured.

"Spittin' fire like a tongue twisted dragon."
Well.
That was...unexpected, for lack of better vocabulary.
Scowling at the boy- Steiner Franz -Kai regarded him for a moment. She took his words with a pinch of salt, almost expecting him to attack her within that moment. When he remained staring at her with that horridly cheesy grin plastered across his face, she groaned inwardly. Had he spent the entirety life suckling on a silver spoon? Crikey. One hand carded through her multicolored mane as she racked her brain for a response. One that wouldn't warrant an insult being thrown by her. She had quite the knack for being silver-tongued even if she didn't want to be.
"Oi. You're just going to accept, without pay?" Her face softened as she considered his disposition.
To her, Stein looked so young. Too young to be grasping the hilt of his sword right now. They were recruiting young these days, she supposed. It dawned on her that she was young too, when she lost the normalcy she cherished before..
'Ooh, are you thinking of me? Imagining how sweet it would be to bruise his pretty little face? He's kind of cute, actually.~ Why not actually use him, love?' The Hollow within purred in delight as she attempted to shut her out. It was a constant battle raging with Dadakka, her inner Hollow. Alas, the witch receded into unseen portions of her mind where her Zanpakutō spirit was hopefully beating some sense into her. Unlikely, but a pleasant thought.
She flinched as she felt a tug at her inner being. Zetsumetsu (her Zanpakutō) apologized immediately as he flew into Dadakka at alarming speeds within her inner world. She gripped her head in her hand. "You should be careful about what you do around people you just met, Franz," Kaida hissed painfully.
The pain subsided for the moment as 'Metsu handled that bastard Hollow. Naozane crooned a gentle whistle in her ear. She couldn't help the smirk tugging at her lips. 'Alright, Mama Hen,' she thought woefully. Shaking her head from the momentary lapse of focus, Kaida realized something as she lifted her head and met eyes with Stein. The scowl returned to her face. In one moment, she was standing before him and in the next, she was gone from his sight.
Her flash step transported her to the space behind the young boy. "By payment, I meat a training lesson. I think you only have the basics down, Stein. I would slain you where stood for touching that sword."
The Colonel unsheathed her own Zanpakutō in cautious movements so as not to startle Stein. The blade gleamed under the sunlight of the twinkling sun of Mexico. High-noon; show down. Grumbling under her breath, she tightened her hand around the hilt of the sword.
"The moment you touch your sword, be ready to draw it. To strike with it."
'Metsu swung above her head and slashed at the ground. Rain from the previous week left the dirt of the desert soft and pliable. Chunks mud flew past her face. Kai swept her sword across the mark again to reveal a piece of metal illuminated by the rays of the warm sun. She picked it up at once and waved it in front of Stein's face.
"This is what we're looking for. I have locations marked all over this town."
She sheathed her sword at once, turning her back on him without the slightest amount of concern for his feelings in that moment. Mission first, feelings later.

Steiner was saddened that she did not accept his handshake, it was a sign of respect, and seeing her not shake his hand made him feel a bit down on the inside for sure, and he let a sigh escape his lips. No one respected him still, not even after he had been trained by Cirno, and that made things worse than one could possibly imagine. Coming up in the foster care system, being berated by his original birth parents, and now being ignored a simple hand shake after he had introduced himself. Life was rough for Steiner and he had the scars to prove that much at the slightest. He retracted his hand, thinking about how bad it had been received, and looked down in the sand for a moment. Don't worry about it, Stein...she just doesn't understand the type of guy you are. Steiner looked up and took a deep breath, collecting himself as he listened to what she had to say about his proclamation.
"Watch what I say around strangers? You could have killed me earlier if you had wanted to, so why would you do it now? Besides, you seem like a nice person.", Steiner said with little doubt in his mind, but Valus was extremely wary. Be careful alright, I don't know what is up with her, but she seems to be in some distress...don't want anything bad to happen, right? Steiner made a mental note to be wary of the Kaida, but he didn't feel like she would harm him. She seemed to be more of a jester than a killer, his nose was proof enough of that, but none the less he would remain wary. Better safe than sorry after all? She had seemed relatively surprised that he was willing to work for free and even more so, it seemed to spawn the source of her distress. Maybe she didn't want him working for free? It was possible that she believed in the sentiment that all good deeds should be rewarded?
"I know it sounds odd that I don't want a reward, but helping people is enough for...", Steiner stopped mid-sentence as she disappeared from his field of view for only a moment before his senses went on red alert as she began to speak behind him. She was fast, faster than anything he had seen before, and in the back of his mind he couldn't help, but feel that if she wanted it, he would be dead. She spoke about how she could of killed him for touching his sword and in that moment he turned around to face her, looking at her dead in the eyes. "Its a habit...I've had this sword for a good while now and it is always good to prepared if you meet someone who isn't of a...certain persuasion.", Steiner said as he took his hand off Excalibur. It wasn't like he could hurt her, at least not in a sense that he thought, and to be honest he was lacking in formal training with a blade. In fact he wanted to get better with the sword as he thought it was part of a defining feature of how he fought.
As he was about to answer, more than likely going to accept her training that she was offering, she began to slash at the floor, and as he watched her mud would begin to smack him in the face. He let out a sigh, wiping off a bit, but staining his coat, and covering his face with the foul smelling mud. He would have said something if not for his eyes picking up on the metalic appearance of what lay underneath the mud. For a moment he wondered what the hell something like that was doing out here, but then memories of what had drawn him here flooded his mind. Was this what had called him all the way out here from where he had been happily safe? The thought of that made his mind race as he looked down at the metal and then back to the lady. "So, what am I supposed to do then?", he said with a grin, letting some of the mud in his mouth, which he quickly then began to spit out in disgust. This was a horrible way to make a first impression.
Be careful, Steiner. I have no idea what is down there and more than that, we have no idea who this lady is, or who she is affiliated with. She could be leading you into a trap that could put your life in danger and it would be foolish to just blindly follow her down the rabbit hole like you are. Don't worry, I will be careful. Besides, if things get rough, at least I have you, Valus. While true, it did make him worry about what his role was in this whole thing. If she had already found what she was looking for then what exactly was he suppose to be doing for her?
