Fantasy? Escapism? Fun? Let's Explore Character And Creator

«THE BORDER BETWEEN THE CREATOR»
Ah, yes, I am rather curious on what your opinion is about when it comes to characters. More specifically, when it comes to characters and their creators. Escapism, expression or just plain free-form; what says you on this matter?
Role-playing comes in many varying forms and different people play for a multitude of reasons. If role-playing, to some, is a form of escapism, then what do you think about examples are considered "wrong" in some communities? People who can't understand the line of difference between them and the character, those who take the characters stance as the creators absolute viewpoint and some who just take it too far are mentions I want to convey on that subject.
Do you believe that there needs to be constant separation between character and creator? Are you perhaps in the camp that believes that there is a small portion of the creator in each character they craft?
Is there a border between what types of escapism are acceptable in RPing world and what forms aren't? Do you have some that you have outlined for yourself or others? What are some that you have noticed in RPing communities?
As for yourself, do you use role-play as a form of escapism to play out certain fantasies, emotions, or parts of your personality that you cannot otherwise express in "real" life?
Ever had an experience where someone just took it too far?
With these questions SAID, I'm curious as to what replies will come in this thread. So I won't express my opinion in this post.

Actually for me rp is a way to help me out in a way irl. When I was younger I talked to myself, alot. When I stumbled onto my first ever rp board I found a place I could be able to play things out on "paper" while still making myself look less crazy
