Garret Tanner [APPROVED 4-2]
Tue May 06, 2014 12:03 am
» Name: Garret James Tanner
» Titles: Gravity's Child
» Age: 19
» Gender: Male
» Affiliation/Rank: Kokuryuteshi
» Appearance Description: Garret stands about five and a half feet in height. His messy brown hair is long, hanging down to his shoulders and in his light brown eyes. He doesn't normally change his general style of dress, being used to moving in it. He wears loose green cargo pants, changing them out for black or blue slacks if he really must, and a white T-shirt underneath a dress shirt of the same color. He looks a bit younger than he is, with the appearance of a 16 year old instead of a 19 year old. This is a family trait. His reiatsu is a deep purple, almost black.

» Personality: Garret, at first glance, looks like just a lazy teenager. He doesn't really get excited about things. Pretty much every event is approached with the same sort of casual boredom. He doesn't rush unless he absolutely needs to, he doesn't get into a direct contest of wills if it's not necessary, but he doesn't roll over and let people go against him either. His quiet boredom hides an inexorable stride forward; he might not reach his goal quickly, but he will get there in his own due time and trying to stop him is like stopping a train.
His seemingly noncommittal attitude hides a sort of intuitive intellect. Garret is smart, and there's no denying this fact if he actually applies his intellect to a problem. His calm, quiet speech means he's often overridden in a conversation, a problem he addresses by making sure that whenever he speaks, it's important to the situation at hand. He's not one to mince words, but he's not rude about that. He just addresses the topic directly, skipping over euphemisms unless not doing so would exacerbate the problem. As a result, he's pretty bad at using euphemisms. He often gets his metaphors mixed up.
If something sparks his interest enough to break through the layers of boredom that surround him like a palpable aura, the effect is immediate. Garret becomes practically a different person. His eyes are alight with the joy of a challenge, focusing intently on the subject of his interest. He's been known to laugh randomly while like this, overjoyed at being able to really pit his intellect against a worthy challenge. Garret seeks out challenges like this actively, though they're fairly rare.
» Likes:
Puzzles: Garret wants to be challenged. In absence of something real and concrete to challenge him, he's been known to solve entire puzzle books in minutes just to kill time.
Training: Garret sometimes needs to do something that can distract him from the constant humming of his thoughts. Training is good for that. He can just throw himself into drilling a particular move or motion and focus on that for a while.
» Dislikes:
Losing: A core part of Garret's entire world view is that he's able to rise to meet challenges when they do show up. If he fails to do this, it eats at him. He never forgets a failure, and he spends a possibly-unhealthy amount of time working out what he did wrong and what he could've done better.
Cleaning: Garret doesn't like cleaning. It's a repetitive motion, there's really nothing about it that benefits from thought, and it takes far too long. There are thousands upon thousands of things he could be doing that aren't swinging a stick with bristles on the end of it back and forth.
_____________________________
» Background: Garret's always been too intelligent for his own good. He didn't have many friends, and he got kicked out of public school for repeated misconduct. He didn't hurt anyone, but he couldn't respect the teachers. He was too bored with the work. The child rushed through his work in the homeschool program he was a part of, graduating at the age of 15, though just barely before turning 16.
It was when the young Tanner boy was at college that his Soul State Evolution triggered for the first time. He'd been walking home from class and gotten jumped by a mugger. The boy had freaked out and ran, and the next thing he knew he was standing on the side of a building, the awestruck criminal staring from ground level and holding his knife dumbly. He didn't stick around long, running around the side of the building and back down to ground level. He didn't stop 'til he was back home, either, but this new ability definitely made things a bit more interesting.
During the course of the next year, Garret finally had something interesting to do, figuring out the way his abilities worked. But soon, he learned all he could on that subject and life was becoming the same dull monotony it had been. The now-seventeen Garret, still looking like a high school student to his own dismay, sat in a graveyard, the solitude fitting his dark mood. Except he wasn't alone.
A man from the Kokuryuteshi approached him. He'd seen the seventeen year old Garret training with his power, and that impressed him as much as Garret's intellect. He offered the kid a place in the organization. Desperate to have something to engage him, Garret joined up almost immediately. His wish; knowledge. Knowledge enough to find the truth behind Soul State Evolution, Shinigami, Demons, and Chi. Knowledge that would enable him to tackle a problem more challenging than any before or since.
Garret was in no rush, however. He spent a lot of time working on his basic skills. The K-World organization was his best bet at learning everything that puzzled him. He needed them, and he wanted to make absolutely sure that they needed him. He trained with his powers, and in more conventional methods of combat. He did the first stages of his research, though it hasn't led to anything conclusive yet. The first thing he's tackling is Soul Force. He's going to figure out for himself exactly where it comes from and why only some people have it. After that, there are many great puzzles just waiting to be solved.

» Natural Attributes:
Intelligence: By far the ability that Garret prizes most is his intellect. He's smart enough to be in college at 16, after all. His areas of expertise are in biology and physics. He doesn't think slowly, either. His thoughts are almost always racing in one direction or another. If he ends up in a fight, he turns his thoughts to figuring out how the opponent fights so that he can devise a solution.
» Racial Powers: Anima Stone Gravitas: Garret's Anima Stone is external, held inside a pentagram necklace custom made for the purpose. The small black gem allows Garret to tap into spells that compliment his Soul State Evolution powers. Namely, the ability to create planes of force ranging in size from just big enough for his feet to wide and tall enough to block a large hallway. The planes of force are just that; planes. They only have two dimensions, height and width.
» Evolution Powers:
Without going into an Evolution stage, Garret's ability to draw on his power is limited to one simple trick; the ability to alter the direction gravity is pulling on him and him alone. He can't take anyone or anything with him when he shifts gravity, and he can't fly. Shifting without a solid object to stand on means he'd fall through the air normally, just in a different direction. In addition, if Garret were carrying, say, a 50lb weight with him up the side of a building, the weight would be pulling straight down, affected by normal Earth gravity. To Garret, this would feel like he was being pulled back or pushed forward, but it's really just normal gravity taking hold of everything that isn't his own body.

» Soul State Evolution Stage 1 Appearance: In this form, Garret channels his Soul Force through his hands and feet, causing a light haze of dark energy to form around them. Otherwise, his appearance stays the same as normal. Garret refers to this as "Alpha-Gravity State". This state consumes
» Soul State Evolution Stage 1 Abilities:
Personal Gravity: Light: Garret can make himself up to 50% lighter. This allows him to fall from higher distances, jump higher, move faster, and roll with impact to lessen damage at the cost of being sent through the air. The disadvantages; he can't hit as hard and he can't keep his footing very well. Garret can switch this ability on and off as long as his feet are on a solid object. It takes a small, but noticeable, amount of energy to activate, but sustaining it costs almost nothing.
Personal Gravity: Heavy: In a similar vein to the other Personal Gravity ability, Garret can increase his weight by 50%. He moves slower and it takes a lot of energy to stay in motion in this state, but he hits a lot harder and can plant his feet more easily. He's able to deck someone bigger than him, walk up skyscrapers in Chicago, or stand in gale force winds. He tends not to use this ability for extended periods of time because of how hard it is to move. Also, falling with this ability active hurts, a lot. His body isn't made to support that much weight. Garret can switch this ability on and off as long as his feet are on a solid object. It takes a small, but noticeable, amount of energy to activate, but sustaining it costs almost nothing.
Zero Gravity Sphere: Garret generates a sphere of energy using Soul Force and hurls it forward. It stops when it hit something and pulses for a half-second before expanding outward into a sphere 10 feet in diameter. Anything in this sphere is no longer restrained by gravity, which could prove troublesome or helpful depending on the circumstances. The sphere lasts for one post, and Garret has to wait 3 posts after it ends before making another one. This ability has a moderate energy cost.
Gravity Rush: Garret can touch another character and change the orientation of gravity for them temporarily. He needs to make contact with his entire hand to activate this ability. It lasts for one post and Garret cannot use it on the same target for two posts afterwards. Also, because of the energy required, he cannot specify the direction of gravity as "up" unless there is a ceiling. This ability takes a lot of energy out of Garret. Using it more than four times in a thread will have him feeling tired. It's harder to affect other people than himself.
» Soul State Evolution Stage 2 Appearance: Garret condenses the stray energy from his first stage into a shimmering dark-purple blade, three feet long, that he holds in his right hand. He refers to this form as "Beta-Gravity Saber State."
» Soul State Evolution Stage 2 Abilities:
Garret keeps access to his Stage 1 abilities in Stage 2.
Personal Gravity Modification: In this state, Garret can switch between his Personal Gravity abilities at will, though doing so is taxing on his energy as he has to use the normal amount of energy to activate each ability.
Personal Gravity: Null: Garret can negate his own gravity, floating in midair at will. He needs a solid object to kick off of to get anywhere, he can't add his weight to the force of a strike, and he can't hold his footing. The ability costs a little energy to activate, but, unlike the other Personal Gravity abilities, takes a small cost to sustain as well.
Gravity Saber: The sword Garret uses is a manifestation of his Soul Force. It's sharp and, if broken, Garret can reform it given a little time to breathe. The sword has only slightly less durability than normal steel. As mentioned above, it's 3 feet in length, and is part of the 2nd stage of Garret's Soul State Evolution. It needs to remain in physical contact with Garret's hands or it vanishes and Garret has to reform it.
Gravity Wave: With a sweep of his sword, Garret unleashes a crescent-shaped wave of energy that wraps around the first thing it touches and doubles the pull of gravity on it. This lasts for two posts, and cannot be used again for three posts after it ends. It also cancels out a Gravity Rush on the same target. This ability is only lightly taxing on Garret's energy reserves.
Gravity Zero Wave: Garret can also launch a crescent of energy that negates the pull of gravity on the first thing it touches. Like Gravity Wave, it lasts two posts and cannot be used again for three posts after it ends. A target with alternative means of propulsion besides walking can still move, though they'll be floating through the air. This move also negates Gravity Rush. This ability is only lightly taxing on Garret's energy reserves.» Soul State Evolution Stage 3 Appearance: (Optional. This will be at least 1 to 0 tier level characters, however. You may fill this out, but the app will ultimately be up to the staff member who reviews it)
» Soul State Evolution Stage 3 Abilities: (Optional. Leave blank if you do not want powers.)

- Post as Harry Dresden from the Omniverse RP site:
The flight continued in the same silence it had for the past ten minutes before the ruins of Edinburgh came into view. Harry called out over the wind; "What's wrong with this place, anyway?" The captain turned in the saddle, calling back to the wizard in response. "Edinburgh was a forward base for Diablo's forces in the war. Honest folks don't want anything to do with anything about Diablo. Why d'you wanna go there, shorty?" Harry leveled his best glare at the back of the man's head. "Quiet. Rest. The city of Edinburgh holds a lot for wizards back where I come from, and maybe some of it's still here." The captain nodded, visibly relaxed. This Diablo character must have been bad news. "As good a reason as any. Hold on tight, I'm taking her down.
Harry thought he'd vomit up his kidneys as the pegasus kicked into a dive. He held on to the saddle for dear life, clenching his jaw shut and trying not to puke. When he opened his eyes again, the captain was looking up at his from the ground, an amused grin on his face. He slid off the flying horse with deliberate care. Before he could think of something suitably sarcastic to say to the captain, he spoke up. "We're not leaving her alone here." He jerked his head to the armored woman, still unconscious and slumped against a ruined building. They were on the outskirts of the Edinburgh ruins. Harry nodded his agreement. "Sounds good. Either of you got paper? The pair looked at him, confused. "You're a prime, just summon some. Focus on what you need, and let the Omnilium take care of the rest."
That was an interesting concept. The day was just strange enough that the wizard actually shut up to try it. Focusing on a legal-sized pad of paper, he felt something like when he'd summoned the bike earlier. "So, this works with things besides bikes. Good to know." Five minutes later, he had a pad of paper and a stack of metal stakes. He sketched a hasty note on the pad and tore off the piece of paper it was on, handing it to the captain. It read thus;
"Off exploring. You're in Edinburgh, a short ways from Minas Tirith according to the soldiers. Follow the stakes to find me when you wake up. I never caught your name.-Harry Dresden"
"Hand that to her when she wakes up, please." Without waiting for a response, the wizard strode into the ruins, driving the first stake into a ruined wall. He continued fairly deep into the city, leaving one of the metal spikes in a wall every couple blocks. They shone in the sunlight; a trail of beacons for the bounty hunter to follow. A pentacle carved into a huge trapdoor in the ground next to a building caught his attention about ten blocks into the ruined city. The door was in better shape than most of the city, and he flipped it open with his staff, leaving a spike buried in the open door and descending the stairs it revealed. Sure enough, the familiar tunnels outside the Hidden Halls of Edinburgh awaited him. He'd memorized the confusing tunnels, but he continued leaving his trail of spikes right up until he reached the end of the tunnel.
The problem that presented itself; it was just the end of the tunnel. The Halls weren't here. "What was it that that guy said, just focus on what I need?" That Omnilium stuff had power, that was for certain. Harry focused on a solid brick of it, and sure enough, the rainbow-colored substance coalesced into a shining ingot of Omnilium after about five minutes. He extended his senses towards the brick and assessed how much energy it had. It wasn't an insignificant amount, but for what Harry intended, he needed a bit more. He cast his observation inward, finding a surprising reserve of the stuff inside him, defiant of the exhaustion the rest of him felt. Harry summoned some chalk, using the time it took to calm himself in preparation for a ritual, drew and closed a circle beneath him, sat himself on the floor and began ordering his thoughts.
First thing he needed; the gate. It stood tall, taking up the entire height of the 30-foot cavern on the immediate opposite side of this wall. Then the Halls themselves; various barracks, bedrooms, meeting halls, and paths that took up the space before the High Council's chambers. The chambers and the Ostentatory were still larger, expanding into the mountainside. Harry examined his memory, calling up every detail of the Halls that he knew and quite a few that he just invented to fill in the gaps. He spent a good hour constructing the blueprint of the Halls in his mind. Then he added a small door in the back of the Ostentatory, replacing the Merlin's tower with a humble stairway down into a simple Chicago apartment. His own, to be precise. The small bedroom with his full-sized bed, his living room with its comfortable furniture, his kitchen with the wood-burning stove, Pre-WWII-icebox and pile of dry hickory, and the sub-basement lab hidden under a trapdoor hidden under a pentacle-shaped rug. It must have taken several hours to assemble all these details; when Harry finally stood, liquid Omnilium swirling around him in a dense cloud, his knees groaned in protest, reminding him that people weren't supposed to sit in that position for that long. Ignoring the familiar post-ritual protest of his leg joints, Harry broke the circle.
The effect of the summoning was immediate. The Omnilium rushed forward, boring through the tunnel walls and replacing them with the reality that he'd constructed carefully in his mind. Harry let out a low whistle as, a half-hour later, the last of the Omnilium constructed the massive gates of the Hidden Halls of Edinburgh. He knew he wouldn't be able to create wards as strong as the real Halls' own protection, but he didn't feel safe until he actually cast some protections on the gates. He walked up to them and realized that the residual Omnilium was practically waiting for him to do something like that. He took out one of the metal stakes and spent a good half hour carving distinct symbols into the door; Norse runes, mock heiroglyphs of his cat and dog, and several other images that he didn't think made any sense but were certainly distinct from one another. After a few minutes, the Omnilium seemed to anticipate what he was trying to do, creating even more symbols that Harry hadn't even thought of. Once the last of the energy from the summoning dissipated, Harry tapped out the key combination on the door with his staff; first the pentacle, then the picture of Mouse, then the one of Mister. The gates creaked open, and the wizard left them such as he stepped inside, leaving the stakes sticking out of torch brackets until he reached the Worry Room. Satisfied with his work and rather winded from the massive summoning, he sank into one of the plush armchairs with a bottle of ale that couldn't really hold a candle to Mac's, but still tasted good all the same.
