General Information
Name: Ryuuza Yaiba Sugiura
Alias: Dokuganryū (Or Dokuganryuu)
Appearance Age: 30's
True Age: Unknown, slightly older than Misaiko.
Gender: Male
Element: All of the Above.
Overall Appearance
Personality: Dogukanryuu is very proud of his own power, but unlike Sariel, possesses no physical signs of arrogance or overconfidence. He is also one of the most proficient combatants in the Soul Society, and maintains a level of honor and integrity when engaging in battle. He refuses to fight in the presence of a child or even with a child. Nonetheless, he was seen to be quite respectful, particularly to the fallen and the dead. Perhaps as a consequence of his old age, Dogukanryuu seems to enjoy sitting down and taking his time with things, especially when telling stories. He also believed that one can only be strong when one has someone they wish to protect, and that any power gained through other motives are meer trivial increases. True strength comes from inside, which was the way he abided by all his life. He is a complex person with some rather difficult to understand views. For example, he believes if two people share very different views, its better they go their seperate ways. Despite this seemingly "immature", free-spirited and carefree attitude, Dogukanryuu is sage-like and serious when the time calls for it. He has remarkable intuition at seeing the good in others in spite of their actions, though his capacity for forgiving his enemies has occasionally been criticized as excessive; Dogukanryuu, for the most part, only fights to win, and spares his enemies after defeating them only for them to attack him when his back is turned. His staggering power is simultaneously reigned in and enhanced by his fierce unshakeable conscience and indomidable spirit. His most remarkable ability is his will to succeed, pushing himself beyond his limitations, and never giving up even when the odds are stacked against him. When someone close to him is in danger, Dogukanryuu has no qualms about putting himself at risk to save them, if necessary.
Dogukanryuu's personality is now sometimes seen as comical; tongue-in-cheek, and, to another extent very serious about his family and friends. He is often seen throughout the story as helping people, mainly befriending and giving advice to Iblis, Dark Kabuto, and Matthew; among others. In the chapter that he is reintroduced, the viewer clearly sees what an eccentric character he is. He typically acts in a goofy, energetic and fun-loving manner; being able to cheer up even the depressed Dark Kabuto at times. While on the surface, he acts in such a ridiculous manner, this merely masks his true personality. Dogukanryuu appears to act mostly out of self-interest rather than any sort of philanthropy. He comes off to most as a sort of cocky layabout, shirking most of his duties, but quick to take action when it appears that his loved ones are in danger. Dogukanryuu is expertly manipulative and prone to think several steps ahead of those around him, giving him a remarkable talent for making subordinates act exactly as he wishes despite appearing not to have had a hand in their decisions. However, while these traits do have a place in his real personality, much of his outward persona can perhaps be considered an intentional facade perfectly designed to cause those unfamiliar with him to underestimate his remarkable intelligence and ability. At the core, he is a remarkably devoted commander whose primary focus and personal duty is to his friends and family. Though he hides it well behind a veil of cynicism and self-importance, Dogukanryuu is a man who cares deeply about the people who trust and support him and goes to great lengths to ensure their safety and well-being, even at the risk of his own. As a man with considerable power, Dogukanryuu considers himself a protector to those without and acts accordingly, earning the staunch loyalty of his most trusted compatriots.
Once a conflicted man, Dogukanryuu returned from his death at the hands of his son, finally released from the cage of the despair he felt. Finally coming to terms with his despair, and strengthening the bond between himself and Mouretsu, contributed to a new personality, which was considered much more unusual demeanor. At times, he was characterized by a slightly drunken stagger and wild, flailing arm and hand gestures that made him appear unfocused and possibly ataxic. Though, despite this, Dogukanryuu is noted to be quite aware of this persona, and will revert to a more serious and wise personality when the situation demands it. Iblis, however, comically stated that Dogukanryuu suffered heat stroke. Dogukanryuu initially comes off as a self-serving man, infamous among many of his colleagues and subordinates alike for the selfish and narcissistic aura he gives off, but to those who truly know him, he is a man that always attends to those who need him. Saeko also stated that Dogukanryuu never did things that would harm a friend or an innocent without just cause, and without having resolute knowledge in the welbeing of that individual. What probably distinguishes Dogukanryuu's personality from his past personas is that he seems to have retains traits from his past that have all some part in his current personality. Two things that Dogukanryuu seems to have never lost, is his indomidable spirit to always push forward, and his inability to turn down challenges, especially when it concerns a powerful opponent.
Dogukanryuu has, on more than one occasion, considered himself sensitive to the opposite sex, explaining that he has a "tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature." However, he is not one to commit to intimate relationships, most likely being a result of Shiori's disappearance and the events that transpired from it. Nonetheless, he was more than adept at sweeping women off their feet, even if it wasn't intentional.
Appearance:
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 150lbs
Natural Abilities
- Hiryuu Ontei: Literally meaning Flying Dragon Step, Hiryuu Ontei is Dogukanryuu's personal variation of Shunpo. When used, it is between Hirenkyaku and Sonido in terms of speed. However, what makes Hiryuu Ontei different from Shunpo is not the speed. Instead it is the sound it makes. While Shunpo has a "swish" sound, Hiryuu Ontei has a high-pitched sound that sounds like a katana being unsheathed rapidly.
- Sashiki Hiryuu Ontei: Literally meaning Cutting Flying Dragon Step, Hiryuu Ontei is Dogukanryuu's personal variation of Senka. The only difference between Sashiki Hiryuu Ontei and Hiryuu Ontei is the sound it makes. Sashiki Hiryuu Ontei starts with the same sound as Hiryuu Ontei, only followed by what sounds like a katana be sheathed.
- Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Dogukanryuu is a highly proficient combatant. In combat, he doesn't seem the least bit taken back by the abilities of his opponent, even when they seemingly have an advantage. He fights with seemingly no effort behind his attacks. He has shown the ability to use extreme speed mixed with a calm composure and precise attacks. However, the largest piece of evidence supporting this is how he wields his Sacred normally. He has, albeit arrogantly, stated that he wields his swords in between his fingers to give his opponents a "fighting chance."
- Master Kendo Specialist: Dogukanryuu is said to be a master in Kendo, matched only by Kenpachi Zaraki and Kirio Hikifune. However, he has yet to show his skill in it, as he prefers to fight with six blades instead of one.
- Taiyou no Mannakahe (たいようのまんなかへ, lit. "To the Center of the Sun"): Taiyou no Mannakahe is a high-power long-range energy attack. It has no "element" but rather is made of pure reishi. It is fired from the user's index finger of their dominant hand. If ambidextrious, it can be fired from either hand. Only one can be fired per 5 posts. It is the Sugiura equivalent of a Cero Oscuras in terms of power.
It is broken down into two stages. The first stage is the "aiming" stage. After pointing at the target, a one-inch-diameter circular beam will be emitted from the finger. Anyone who has not seen or heard of the attack will believe that the beam itself is the attack. However, that is false. Instead, it acts as a laser sight for the actual attack. The longest range ever recorded was 5 miles.
After one post, the true attack will be fired. Instead of being something like a large circular attack, this technique takes the form of a long, tall, thin, blade-like attack. The highest ever recorded height was 10 miles high. However, all Taiyou no Mannakahes are EXACTLY one inch thick at their thickest point. Because of the immense power required to fire just one, only Suguiras of 1-1 or 0 tier can learn this technique. It can only be fired when unreleased or when in Kyuu Kyou. The attack will most likely damage the user's hand in the process as well.
Guardian Beast
Sacred Weapon: Dogukanryuu has six katana for his Sacred. This is due to the constant-release of his Sacred.
Guardian Beast: Mouretsu (lit: Rage) takes the form of two beings.
The first of which is a suit of armor that is as tall as two Dogukanryuus. It speaks in a harsh voice that can scare even the mightiest of warriors.
Inside of the armor is the true form of Mouretsu. It takes the appearance of a young girl with grey skin and piercing yellow eyes.
Guardian Beast's World: Oddly enough, Mouretsu's inner world has started to vanish. It is currently nothing more than glass boxes hovering in midair.
Techinques:
Magic: Other than Musou, Dogukanryuu has refused to learn any of the Sugiura's magic. This does not include the Taiyou no Mannakahe.
Guardian Beast Unsealed
Joushou: Gekijin (lit: Violence)
- Spoiler:
Dogukanryuu's Sacred is in a constant state of Joushou. It can never return to its sealed form, unless Dogukanryuu or Mouretsu is killed. Gekijin takes the shape of six identicle white katana. Dogukanryuu can wield his katana between his fingers, as if they were claws. He has no real abilities during Joushou, as he is in a constate state of release. The only ability that he is confirmed to have is a form comparable to Shunko. He calls it his Sensou Odori (lit: War Dance) and when activated, it surrounds Dogukanryuu in a teal-colored light. The light acts as a shadow outline, mimicking his every movement. This allows him to move at speeds far greater than most Captains. It would also appear as though Dogukanryuu has a telekinetic link to his swords, as if he drops and/or throws one or more of his katana, he can recall it back to his hand at a moment's notice.
Sensou Odori
Zenou: Gekiretsu (lit: Violent Action)
After saying the name of his Zenou, a bright blue orb will surround Dogukanryuu. After exactly seven seconds, a blue katana will rip open the orb. It should be noted that he has no blue katana in Joushou. After emerging, he will be encased in armor. The armor has a large, vertically elongated head that is missing its right eye. However, the armor's most visible piece is its back, or to be more precise, what is attached to the back. On the back of the armor is a set of armored pieces that resemble coffins. They are about the same height of Dogukanryuu, and there are three on each side. However, they are not just there for show. Instead, Dogukanryuu can have them spread out and open, revealing the fact they are not empty on the inside. The outer four "wings" have two katana in each of them. They are all blue and look almost identicle. The only difference is the symbol on their blades. Each pair has a different symbol. The symbols are like the wings, they are not just for show. Instead, each symbol represents what the blade's abilities are. Each pair controls a different element or force. The blade abilities can be combined into different attacks, which are listed below. When not combined, each blade will have a Getsuga-like attack that is made of the element or force. Unless otherwise stated, each technique lasts for 3 posts.
- Spoiler:
- Fire+Earth=Tokeizara ( とけいざら, lit: Glass): This attack will create a large sheet of glass that will reflect most incoming energy attacks. The shape and color varies.
- Fire+Ice=Dekishi (できし, lit: Death by Drowning): This attack creates a small, controlled flood. Dogukanryuu mostly will have the ice above the opponent and have the fire melt the ice, causing a rain storm. Lasts for 2 posts.
- Fire+Lightning=Tenka (てんか, lit: "Fire Caused by Lightning"): This attack is an especially dangerous one. By causing a fire underneath the opponent's feet in the air, it makes falling and landing down-right suicidal. However, that is only half of the technique. He will then cause lightning to strike from above, in order to force the opponent to fall to the ground.
- Fire+Magnetism=Jishaku Ekijou ( じしゃくえきじょう, lit: "Magnet Liquid State"): Dogukanryuu has no real need for this technique, other than for assassinations or sneak attacks. This creates a liquid ore that is highly magnetic. It lasts for two posts.
- Fire+Metal=Juunou (じゅうのう, lit: "Fire Shovel"): This is a technique Dogukanryuu uses frequently. By superheating his blades, it allows for the blade's cutting ability to be increased fivefold.
- Fire+Water=Kemuru (けむる, lit: "Smoke"): An escape technique for Dogukanryuu. This will create a large smokescreen around him and his opponent, allowing for Dogukanryuu to escape. Lasts for two posts.
- Fire+Wind=Kouryuu Kaji (こうりゅうかじ, lit: "Fire Rain Dragon") Another favorite of Dogukanryuu. This attack creates a single, large burst of fire that is in the shape of a Chinese-style dragon. It does not home in on its target, due to it being dumb-fired. Lasts for a single post.
- Ice+Earth=Kuromeru Hyougen (くろめるひょうげん, lit: "Black Ice Field") A technique that is mainly effective in closed spaces. This creates a thin, almost invisible sheet of ice on the walls, floor, ceiling, doors, and windows. It does not crack when stepped on, unless the person is unusually heavy. It is mainly there to prevent speed-based ground attacks and is a good way to knock an opponent off of his or her feet. Lasts for five posts or until he steps outside.
- Ice+Lightning=Arare Arashi (あられあらし, lit: "Hail Storm") A technique that requires open space. When used, large golfball-sized hail will fall from the sky at high speeds. This is mainly a distraction technique. Lasts for two posts.
- Ice+Metal=Katai (かたい, lit: "Hard Metal") A defense technique. This hardens Dogukanryuu's armor and increases his defense to be able to match that of a top-ranking Espada's hierro. It lasts for two posts.
- Ice+Water=Gachigachi (がちがち, lit: "Frozen Solid") Another defense technique. By sending a large wave of water and freezing it soon after, Dogukanryuu can create a large wall to get between him and his opponent. Lasts for remainder of release or until broken.
- Ice+Wind=Ice Darts=Hyouchuu (ひょうちゅう, lit: "Icicle") One of Dogukanryuu's few attacks involving ice. This creates large darts the size of a pool cue that are sent towards the opponent at high speeds, like a spear. Lasts for a single attack.
- Lightning+Wind=Yoarashi (よあらし, lit. "Night Storm") This is one of Dogukanryuu's stronger, and least favorite techniques. He will create a small tornado around an opponent, trapping them unless they can get out of the way before it completely forms. Once entrapped, he will cause many lightning bolts to strike at the center of the tornado. Lasts for two posts, but needs one to ensnare the enemy.
- Lightning+Metal=Hiraishin (ひらいしん, lit: "Lightning Rod") This technique plays on the blades that control metal's ability to increase their length. After stabbing an opponent, Dogukanryuu can create a large bolt of electricity to travel down the length of the blade and shock the insides of the opponent. Lasts for a single attack.
- Lightning+Magnetism=Denjishaku (でんじしゃく, lit: "Electromagnet") By implanting one of his Magnetism swords into an object larger than himself, Dogukanryuu can cause most metallic objects (except for himself) to stick to the object the blade is implanted in. As long as the blade is implanted, and he wields no other blades other than Lightning blade, he can turn the ability on and off as he pleases.
- Lightning+Earth=Funkakou (ふんかこう, lit: "Crater") Dogukanryuu will cause lightning bolts to hit the ground, causing massive craters to appear. It is mainly used as an escape or evasion technique. Lasts for a single attack.
- Lightning+Water=Jiheki (じへき, lit: "Magnetic Domain") A technique mainly used as an ambush-type. It works best in enclosed locations. By creating a thin layer of water on the ground, Dogukanryuu can cause it to become electrified at will.
- Magnetism+Earth=Jikifujou (じきふじょう, lit: "Magnetic Levitation") This is a technique that Dogukanryuu hates using, as he never knows how it will work. There are two ways it will work. Either the opponent(s) will be drawn to the ground and not able to leave it until the effects wear off OR they will be pushed away from the ground and not able to land.
- Metal+Earth=Mushashugyou (むしゃしゅぎょう, lit: "Samurai Drill") Dogukanryuu will create a large drill and send it towards the opponent. It lasts for a single attack, but can only be used once per three posts.
- Metal+Magnetism=Jijou (じじょう, lit: "Magnetic Field") This is a more permanant version of his Denjishaku ability. The blade MUST be in an actual metal object for it to work. The effects last for one post.
- Metal+Water=Suishinki (すいしゅんき, lit: "Propeller") Dogukanryuu will create a large propeller-like weapon and send it towards the enemy. Effective in clearing out larger enemies or large groups of opponents. Lasts for a single attack, but can only be used once per three posts.
- Water+Earth=Yamakuzure (やまくずれ, lit: "Landslide") Another ambush-style attack. This requires either an open area with no artificial covering of the ground or a cliff, plateau, or mountain. After sticking the Water blade in the ground, Dogukanryuu can create quicksand or cause a landslide, depending on the terrain. Before the actual attack, the effects last for as long as the Water blade is in the ground. Attack lasts for a single post though.
- Water+Magnetism=Imbalance=Futsuriai (ふつりあい, lit: "Imbalance") Once again, an ambush-style attack. By creating a thin layer of water over the ground and by then creating a magnetic reaction underneath the water, Dogukanryuu creates a special "field" for the water. The field allows for the opponent to walk on the water. However, as soon as they step on it, it will make them feel as if they are on a boat in rough water. Lasts for two posts.
- Wind+Earth=Sand/Dust Storm=Kokufuu (こくふう, lit: "Sky Darkening Dust Storm") Another escape technique. This creates a sand or dust storm, depending on the terrain. It is half of a mile wide and half of a mile tall. It lasts for four posts.
- Wind+Magnetism=EMP=Denpa (でんぱ, lit: "Electromagnetic Wave") This is a pre-emptive strike technique. By swinging both swords at the same time, Dogukanryuu can knock out most, if not all, electronic devices within a half-mile radius.
- Wind+Metal=Windmill=Kazaguruma (かざぐるま, lit: "Windmill") By creating a propeller-like shape and by then increasing the wind behind it, Dogukanryuu can stop or slow down most projectile attacks. It lasts for two posts.
- Wind+Water=Namigashira (なみがしら, lit: "Wave Crest") A simple technique, Dogukanryuu can create a large tsunami-style wave. However, it can only travel half of a mile and is only half of a mile tall. Width is dependant on many factors. Lasts for one post.
Combination/17th Sword: Dogukanryuu can condense all sixteen blades into a single katana. This katana has NONE of the abilities listed above. Instead, it increases his speed by a small bit.- Ama-no-Habakiri (あまのはばきり, lit. "Slash of Heavenly Wings"): Dogukanryuu will swing the katana eight times, in an asterisk formation with a horizontal line through the middle. The area of where the blades were swung will light up in that pattern. The attacks will then shoot off in each direction of the slashes and then home in and surround the target's location. When they converge on the target, they will create an explosion of bright white light. Can only be used once per release.
- Fire+Earth=Tokeizara ( とけいざら, lit: Glass): This attack will create a large sheet of glass that will reflect most incoming energy attacks. The shape and color varies.
Kyuu Kyou: Abaremawaru (lit: Rampage)
The final stage of Dogukanryuu's Sacred takes the form of a suit of bone-colored armor. The armor has no "face" like its Zenou predecessor. Instead it appears a helmet with a visor with many lines across where the face should be. From where the base of the nose should be to the forehead, there is an angelic figure that extends from the face a few inches. The main feature of the armor, however, is its "Kagemusha" armor. The armor is made of black reishi and reiatsu. It is as hard as a top-level Espada's hierro, however it can be ejected.
However, the weapons from the previous form do not return. They are replaced by a completely new set of weapons, with nearly the same abilities. The main difference is that the blades cannot be combined into different techniques anymore. Instead each blade has its own specific powers, including the final blade.
Kagemusha (かげむしゃ, lit. "Shadow Warrior"): Dogukanryuu is surrounded by a black reishi/reiatsu mixture that looks like leather.
Dogukanryuu also has a technique that involves actually using the special coating around the armor. It can only be used within a closed space. The coating will be ejected, providing Dogukanryuu with no extra defense. However, the coating will spread throughout the area. This will, in turn, turn the area pitch black. Even with a light source, the maximum anyone can see is one foot ahead. Even those with enhanced eyesight like Tsubine and Shadin can only see a maximum of three feet ahead. The only person who can still see perfectly fine is Dogukanryuu. The only way to cancel out the effect is to strike Dogukanryuu. The effects last for five posts and can only be used twice per release. It also requires a five post recharge period.
- Spoiler:
Blades:- Jigabachi (じがばち, lit. "Digger Wasp"): Jigabachi allows for Dogukanryuu to easily manipulate the ground around him. This allows him to dig deep holes within seconds as well as create walls that can stop a massive tsunami.
- Shougekiha (しょうげきは, lit. "Shockwave"): Shougekiha allows for Dogukanryuu to be able to knock out anything giving off an electrical signal within a two mile radius. It is highly effective against cities.
- Hinomoto (ひのもと, lit. "Origin of the Blaze"): Hinomoto allows for Dogukanryuu to control flames that rival Ryuujin Jakka in heat. He can burn down an entire forest within minutes as well as razing a city within an hour.
- Shimitsuku (しみつく, lit. "Frozen to Death"): Shimitsuku is known as the sacred version of Hyorinmaru. It can freeze a lake by being within a football field's length from it.
- Makaze (まかぜ, lit. "Storm from Hell"): Makaze resembles Misaiko's powers, but not as strong. Be forwarned, if Misaiko and Dogukanryuu were to use their wind powers at their maximum, it is unknown what will happen.
- Jiseisou (じせいそう, lit. "Magnetic Tyrant"): Jiseisou allows for Dogukanryuu to be able to draw and repel metallic objects. This can include swords, bullets, axes, etc.
- Inryousui ( いんりょうすい, lit. "Pure Water"): Inryousui allows for Dogukanryuu to heal minor wounds and some deep cuts. He prefers not to use it.
- Kanagata (かながた, lit. "Metal Pattern"): Kanagata allows for Dogukanryuu to extend his blade's length to that of half of Gin's bankai. However, it takes a while to do this.
- Konseki (こんせき, lit. "Past and Present"): Konseki allows for Dogukanryuu's senses to become much more heightened. It will create a one-foot radius from any section of Dogukanryuu's body that if anything enters, he will be alerted of it.
- Suezue (すえずえ, lit. "Distant Future"): Suezue allows Dogukanryuu's speed to increase drastically.
- Toshigashira (としがしら, lit. "Beginning of a New Era"): By channeling all of his energy into the blade, Toshigashira is almost unstoppable. It has no ranged attacks, no special abilities other than its cutting power, and nothing that increases Dogukanryuu's stats. Instead, after using it, he is put in a weakened state.
- Totsuka-no-Ama-no-Habakiri (とつかのあまのはばきり, lit. "Ten-Handed Slash of Heavenly Wings"): This can only be used when using Toshigashira. Dogukanryuu will slice the air in front of him in a circular manner. This is followed by the asterisk from his Joushou. After that, another circle followed by a diamond is "sliced." It will then be complete. A massive burst of Reishi and reiatsu that can make a Captain gasp for air will sweep across the battlefield. It can only be used once every five releases, and it will leave Dogukanryuu comatose.
- Jigabachi (じがばち, lit. "Digger Wasp"): Jigabachi allows for Dogukanryuu to easily manipulate the ground around him. This allows him to dig deep holes within seconds as well as create walls that can stop a massive tsunami.
History/Roleplay Sample
Character Background:
- Spoiler:
Dogukanryuu was born in the early days of the Suguiras, as one of Shimura's bodyguards. As the first Sugiura's bodyguard, he was trained heavily by Shinigami and Saga himself. This put Dogukanryuu as the strongest Sugiura other than Shimura herself. Dogukanryuu's powers put him in league with most captains at the time and the fact that he had developed a reishi-based energy attack that could easily outpower most Kidō. Then there was his version of Shunpo, which all Suguiras were being trained in. His version, known as Hiryuu Ontei, was much faster than the others' Shunpo. At this time, he was known by his birth name, Ryuuza Yaiba Sugiura.
Dogukanryuu was born again as Date Masamune on September 5, 1567. The Date clan had built alliances with neighboring clans through marriages over previous generations. However, there were many disputes over the lands during the 15th and 16th centuries. Shortly after Masamune's succession, a Date retainer named Ōuchi Sadatsuna defected to the Ashina clan of the Aizu region. Masamune declared war on the Ashina for this betrayal, but his army was halted by the Ashina general Iwashiro Morikuni, who forced Masamune to retire from the campaign. Masamune took control of Obama Castle after this.
With the rise of Masamune, formerly amicable relationships were cast aside as he began to attack and conquer all of the surrounding lands, even those of his kin in Mutsu and Dewa Provinces. Shocked by his ruthlessness, a neighboring family, the Hatakeyama, desperately appealed to Date Terumune to rein in his son's military campaigns. Invited to dinner by the Hatakeyama, Terumune said that he was unable to control his son. In an unheard-of act of desperation, the family kidnapped Terumune and attempted to take him back with them. Masamune, who was out hunting, received word of the kidnapping. When he and his men closed in on the kidnappers as they were about to cross a river, Terumune ordered his son's men to kill all the enemy, even at the cost of his own life. Masamune's men did as they were told and killed everyone, including Terumune. Masamune continued the war and tortured and killed the families of his father's kidnappers.
After defeating the Ashina in 1589, he made the Aizu domain his base of operations.
Meanwhile, his relationship with his mother, Yoshihime, continued to deteriorate. Yoshihime insisted Masamune resign the succession to her second son, Kojiro. According to some historians, she tried to poison him one night while serving him dinner. Masamune consequently killed his own brother in order to come to power. After this tragedy, his mother fled to her brother's home, the Mogami clan.
In 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi seized Odawara Castle and compelled the Tōhoku region daimyos to participate in the campaign. Although Masamune refused Hideyoshi's demands at first, he had no real choice in the matter since Hideyoshi was the virtual ruler of Japan. Masamune still delayed, infuriating Hideyoshi. Expecting to be executed, Masamune, wearing his finest clothes and showing no fear, faced his angry overlord. Not wanting further trouble, Hideyoshi spared his life, saying that "He could be of some use".
After serving Hideyoshi for a time, he was given Iwatesawa castle and the surrounding lands as his home domain. Masamune moved there in 1591, rebuilt the castle, renamed it Iwadeyama, and encouraged the growth of a town at its base. Masamune stayed at Iwadeyama for 13 years and turned the region into a major political and economic center. He and his men served with distinction in the Korean invasions under Hideyoshi and, after Hideyoshi's death, he began to support Tokugawa Ieyasu — apparently at the advice of Katakura Kojūrō.
Tokugawa Ieyasu awarded Masamune the lordship of the huge and profitable Sendai domain, which made Masamune one of Japan’s most powerful daimyo. Tokugawa had promised Masamune a one million koku domain, but, even after substantial improvements were made, the land only produced 640,000 koku, most of which was used to feed the Edo region. In 1604, Masamune, accompanied by 52,000 vassals and their families, moved to what was then the small fishing village of Sendai. He left his fourth son, Date Muneyasu, to rule Iwadeyama. Masamune would turn Sendai into a large and prosperous city.
Although Masamune was a patron of the arts and sympathized with foreign causes, he was also an aggressive and ambitious daimyo. When he first took over the Date clan, he suffered a few major defeats from powerful and influential clans such as the Ashina. These defeats were arguably caused by recklessness on Masamune's part.
Being a major power in northern Japan, Masamune was naturally viewed with suspicion, as any potential rival would be viewed. Toyotomi Hideyoshi reduced the size of his land holdings after his tardiness in coming to the Siege of Odawara against Hōjō Ujimasa. Later in his life, Tokugawa Ieyasu increased the size of his lands again, but was constantly suspicious of Masamune and his policies. He was particularly suspicious of foreign missionaries, whom he perceived as a threat to his power. Because of this, he ordered the execution of Padre Sotelo after his journey around the world.
It was soon after that that Masamune became a spirit due to a large battle in Akihabara, where he lost one of his eyes. Something happened in the travel back to the Rukongai. This put him back in the Sugiura Realms instead of the Rukongai. He started to train with some of the younger Sugiura, including Shimura's daughters. He took a fond liking to Misaiko. When Shimura retreated to her mountain, she left Dogukanryuu in charge of security. When Misaiko took the throne with his brother, Otoya, as the king, Dogukanryuu swore to protect them. However, Otoya screwed around on Misaiko, and thus was thrown out of the throne. By this time, Misaiko's oldest daughter, Saeko, had been banished.
Dogukanryuu actually took more than just a liking to Saeko. It was rumored that he had even trained her in the past. It was also rumored that the two were more than just friends, but that was never proven. Recently, Dogukanryuu was relieved of his duty due to newer Suguiras basically taking all of the spots. Dogukanryuu retains all of his passcodes and access to the town and the castle. Dogukanryuu also allied himself with Saeko, adding a major physcial strength boost to her already growing army...
