Appearance: Appearance: The most glaringly obvious things about Akihiko are: His caucasian skin, tight against his lean muscles yet boasting no signs of malnutrition, his navy blue hair, that, while remaining short near the front of his head (his bangs long enough to touch the bridge of his nose), actually extends down just between his shoulder blades, the black shinigami outfit that he wears, as is standard for all shinigami, and of course, the black sandals and white socks on his feet.

Upon closer inspection, one is capable of noticing the finer details such as: his green eyes roughly the shade of jade, the way his hair curls around his face as if framing it, the worry lines on his forehead generally hidden by his bangs, and the everpresent smirk of superiority, yet goodnatured will on his face. This look manifests itself as a sparkle in his eyes, a small curl of his lip, and relaxed eyebrows. Akihiko has no tattoos or marking on his body, a point of pride and purity.

Clothing: Preferring to wear the standard Shinigami Shihakusho, Akihiko is generally decked out in a black robe-and-legging combination with white under-garments underneath. Finishing the outfit are his black sandals revealing bare feet and a simple blue chord around his right shoulder and left hip. Of course, this chord holds the scabbard for his Zanpakutō across hi back.

PERSONALITY
Who are they on the inside?

Personality: Akihiko is a very pleasant person to be around. Always the first to offer his assistance, he is generally as helpful as can be. This is because Akihiko is a very prime believer in Karma. While at first, he was simply trying to bank points, he has actually gained a very compassionate personality and genuinely cares for those around him. To go with this attitude, Akihiko generally has a smile on his face or a joke on his lips. However, like other shinigami, Akihiko has a high passion for combat, despite his upbeat personality.

Speaking of combat, Akihiko is a very proficient figher. In fact, he is unrivalled as a battle tactician. Having dedicated his life to the study and practice of kenjutsu, including kendo, hakuda, and archery, he has mastered every form of martial art and weaponry available. Of course, in having done this, Akihiko has no skill with the demonic arts, although he doesn't actually care. He believes it's more important that he can move himself than chant some voodoo when the time comes.

When not in combat, Akihiko enjoys looking at the stars. A fan of astronomy and astrology, he has done vast research on the outer regions of space. To better this intelligence, he has also studied massive amounts of physics and gained a very high knowledge of those subjects. Included in his science research is chemistry and biology, although his physics takes precedence of both of them. After all, proper physics can be the difference in battle. A smarter man is a better fighter, after all.

He wishes to prove that power comes from intelligence, not musculature. While having a wide range of techniques and generally being prepared for every situation is a pretty solid way to becoming "strong", Akihiko believes that he can overcome any situation presented to him with what he has.

BACKGROUND
What is there past like?

History/Background: Birth

When Akihiko was born as a human in Karakura Town, it was the year 1706. The Edo period in Japan (although they didn't know that) was just beginning, although that actually made no difference to Akihiko's life. With the coming of Akihiko, there was a great tragedy. His mother had, unfortunately, died in childhood. Because of this, he grew up being raised solely by his father who, despite choosing not to find another wife, took out his frustration on his son. Resentment slowly turned to visible abuse, which turned into neglection and eventually even progressed into physical abuse.

All of this happened before the age of six. At school, he was frequently questioned by his teachers about the many bruises and cuts generally found on his body, but the boy remained elusive. His studies suffered from his troubled home life, and when he went home with a failed test and returned to school the next day, a concerned teacher called the proper authorities. Being put in a foster home, the last remnant he has of his father is a cut-out of his obituary, suicide, which he kept in his wallet.

Akihiko grew up alongside kids who shared similar experiences. In them grew a powerful trust and bond. Together, they proved that determination and hard work, as well as a balance of enjoyment and mischief, were the keys to finding happiness in life, no matter the tragedies they've been through. Unfortunately, this newfound happiness and love would all come to a tragic end, and history would repeat itself.

First Encounter

The foster home that Akihiko and his friends lived in was utterly destroyed one night by a Hollow. Of course, he couldn't see the attacker, and the media called it "freak earthquake", but it happened. The masked beast had devoured several of his friends, including his two best, before turning its sights on him. In the nick of time, a Shinigami arrived to save him. As a spiritually-unaware boy, he was ignorant to all of this. However, he still remembers a strange flash of silver in the air in front of him which he can't quite place. The shinigami's final blow.

Spiritual Awakening

The year was then 1716, and it was the day of Akihiko's 10th birthday. He was celebrating it with his new foster family at a family picnic, when suddenly, his new father droppd dead. The smiling face was frozen in time as his corpse turned cold and he fell on his back. The reason for this sudden loss of life occuring? A large, spiked tentacle was protruding from his back. This appendage was attached to a squid-like Hollow, which roared to announce its arrival.
Still not able to see the creature, he was once again saved by a shinigami. As the battle was happening, he was very busy crying over the man's body. The mother, having been less commited to the father than she thought, ran like Hell. Perhaps she could see the Hollow. Who knows? Regardless, as Akihiko held the body tightly to his chest, the end of the Hollow's tentacles was pressing against his body.

Suddenly, he heard the clash of metal on metal. Looking up toward the sound, he saw blurs of color flash in the air. Wiping away his tears, he focused and finally, he could see. He made out the images of the shinigami and Hollow fighting, sword versus claw. As he watched, the authorities arrived once more to take him away. Being led away by policeman, he was questioned for the death of his second foster father. After his conviction and a lack of evidence proved that he was innocent, he was reffered to a third family.

Death

This family was a little luckier. Akihiko's life was Ghost Free for four years. It was only when the year 1720 rolled around that his perpetual secret was reinstated. His foster mother and father were away at a play one night when the roof was suddenly lifted off of his house by a pair of massive, black hands. Laying on his bad at the time with his hands behind his head, his eyes widened and the Hollow roared in his face.

But this was no ordinary Hollow. It did not attempt to kill Akihiko. At least, not right away. It simply stared at him with familiar eyes. Akihiko made no attempt to move. If the beast wanted him dead, he would be. He wouldn't be able to get anywhere without it killing him, so there was no point in trying. As it stared at him, its mouth opened and closed several times before sound came out. When it finally did, it said his name, albeit a little slowly.

And then suddenly, a third shinigami saved him. Because Karakura Town was the centerpoint of reiatsu on the entire planet*, it wasn't that surprising that there were shinigami always ready to assist him. As the shinigami purified the soul, it reverted back into that of his father. Watching the entire precedings, he stared first at hatred toward his father, and then at admiration for the shinigami, who konso'd the spirit before turning to the boy. He knew that Akihiko had seen him.

"Hey Kid... I don't know how you're going to explain this one." He laughed as he pointed at the roof. "Want to just come with me instead?" Nodding, the shinigami floated down beside him and told him to close his eyes. Raising the Zanpakutō up, he dropped it hard, and cut clean through Akihiko's living flesh. As the corpse fell around his soul, the shinigami buried his soul. After he was given the order to, opened his eyes. When he did, he was facing the grand view of Soul Society from Monument Hill.

Rukongai Life

District 23 was actually pretty decent. Crime was at a low rate, although still slightly noticeable, but life was good. Going to school to finish his studies, Akihiko discovered that his life of malnutrition and abuse had given him a very feminine appearance when he filled out thanks to a better life. That, coupled with his studious record, led to a lot of beatings from other boys. This, in turn, lead to Akihiko learning self-defense. It was the final straw. He wouldn't be beat on anymore.

For ten years, Akihiko egged on those bastards, forcing them to fight him in order to grow stronger. As he got better and better, it became a daily challenge. Bullying became rivalling, which grew into a sick, twisted friendship as the boys formed a bond similar to that seen in the novel and film Fight Club. As their spiritual power only grew from such exuberant work-outs, a few of them were suggested for the Shinigami Academy. Although some decided to apply, Akihiko opted to wait a few more years, opting for more physical training before mental.

Academy Life

But finally, the time came for him to join the Academy. It was now Earthyear 1736, and Akihiko was technically 30 years old, despite his appearance of that of a fifteen year old. Joining the academy, his physical strength allowed for him to skip by the more basic classes, allowing for him to join advanced swordsmanship and battle tactics classes, his already-developed, studious nature allowed for him to graduate two years before the full six year average.

During his time at the academy, Akihiko was generally the second-in-command of his class, used often as a sparring partner for demonstration and left in charge when the teacher had other business to attend to. Because of that, nobody was surprised when his reports came back with high praises. Except, of course, for Kidō. For some reason, Akihiko could never fully grasp the concept of Demonic Arts. This is probably because of his already-maxxed physical training.

Shinigami Life

After graduation, Akihiko was immediately placed in squad 1 as a recruit. This was because he had such high organization skills and battle strategy that he was actually an asset to the squad. Spending his free time cleaning the barracks and making sure everything was in tip-top condition, as well as performing to his maximum on every mission he went on (the few that he was allowed as a recruit), he became a favorite of his captain. Over time, he jumped ahead quite a bit, becoming fourth seat without a shikai. But finally, it was time for him to learn his first release.

And apparently, he's been training ever since.

ZANPUKTO
What is this characters power?

Zanpakutô Spirit Name: Katta
Appearance:

Katta:

Katta is simply a baby griffin. Once more, we'll go from top to bottom. There is a large tuft of red hair that sticks up from his skull, positioned between his firm, triangular ears. These ears are covered in a much shorter layer of red fur, almost to the point of being dander, except for the tips, which extend roughly two inches. The insides of Katta's ears are a soft pink. Beneath the crest of the brow are Katta's gorgeous green eyes and sharp, prominant yellow beak. Beginning beneath the forehead crest, the fur changes into feathers, which continue down to the neck.

Running down his front, Katta possesses another line of fur. This fur, the same color red as his above feathers, tufts around his neck and then down his chest and stomach, but stops at his navel. Around this area is black feathers. The soft down is used primarily for warmth. Katta's back is the holder of two wings, colored similarly to his down, although there is a heavy portion of white on the insides of them, similar to the in-between of his chest fur and feathers.

As for his paws, his front legs are coated with the same black feathers, but is ended with the miniature paws of a lion, golden in color and capable of extending to reveal sharp claws, hidden in the pads of his toes. His back legs are similar in design, although they do not change color at the paws to the same golden color, and instead remain a simple black.

Finally, ending the lovely creature is his tail. Coated in black fur but tipped in white, the simple, foot-long appendage is usually wrapped around Katta's legs when he sits. For generic measurements, Katta is twenty-two inches tall and nearly nine pounds. His hollow bones and premature stature are the basis for such a low weight, as well as most of his mass being comprised of feathers and fur.

Inner World:

Akiho's inner world is very complex, despite appearing to be simple at first glance. Let's start from the top and run our way down it, shall we? The sky is generally completely black, due to it being night time, of course. The stars, for some reason, cannot be seen, which is incredibly odd considering it's a very clear sky. The moon, however, hangs full and majestic over the black banket. Traveling down from the sky, the landscape is bordered by massive skyscrapers, the steel usually only illuminated by the light of the moon, but enough to keep the city in a perpetually-visible state.

Aside from the skyscrapers, there is also an abundance of buildings such as offices, a hospital, and some apartments. All-in-all, the world behind the city is not viewable. It's like a curtain of silver. Going even lower, the streets of the city are always completely clear of any traffic or people milling about. The only mention of civilization in the city are the shadows that flit about behind the windows, unable to be seen fully. Every street light is displaying all colors, an oddity in itself. When Akihiko enters this world, he's usually standing in the middle of a street.


Sealed Zanpakutô Apperance :

Sealed Form:

The standard katana that is Katta's sealed form is usually placed on his back. The black scabbard is around his right shoulder and left hip with a red chord, as is standard for most shinigami. The hilt of the sword is wrapped in a simple black fabric, and its guard is also black. A simple, golden sheet of metal (as is standard), extends from the hilt over the blade, but disappears after two inches. Extending a maximum length of two feet, the silver blade is kept polished and gleaming through consistent care.

Release: Shofu, Katta!

Shikai Description:

Shikai:

After calling out his release command, Akihiko holds his sword vertically with one hand on the hilt and the other at the top. Pressing his flat palm against the tip, he pushes down and the blade disappears. Continuing this even down past the hilt and handle, the entire sword disappears and Akihiko is left with his palms together. Pulling his palms apart, his new sword forms from a spiralling column of black and red feathers.

Why not switch things up a bit and start from bottom to top this time? Yeah. Let's do that. The pommel of the sword is a large black orb, completely opaque, that is connected to the rest of the sword by three talon-shaped pieces of metal folding over the sphere. The handle from there is a simple steel, although it is painted black and perfectly cylindrical.

At the handguard, there is a large red eye with a black pupil crafted into the steel, and the handguard itself is a set of black wings that extend from the eye's edges four inches. From there, the blade changes from the curved nature of a japanese sword to a double-edged, european style and extends to a new length of three and a half feet.


Shikai Abilities: Akihiko actually has very little to do with his Zanpakutō ability. It is merely to mix his reiryoka with the air particles around them and control them as well, as long as they are within the range of his spiritual pressure. This does not mean Akihiko is an airbender. There is a very heavy limitation on what he is allowed to do with this air. He must, absolutely must use it in concord with his sword, although this may be in any fashion that he wishes.

Name of Tech: Richi

Description of Tech: By focusing reiatsu onto his blade as quickly as he can, Akihiko traps the air that is already around it naturally. By doing this several times (yet so quickly it is unnoticable), he compounds several layers of air and spiritual pressure onto his sword. This wind and energy infusion is then concentrated along the blade to conform to it's general width, yet extends well past the blade to give it a new length. Of course, Ahikiko is perfectly capable of manipulating this size as freely as he wishes, but he cannot exceed the maximum length of Fifteen Feet. Because his reiatsu is what makes his Zanpakutō, and his reiatsu and air is what makes up this new sword, it is easily understandable why this new, longer, translucent, whispy blade is just as strong as his Zanpakutō, and does the exact same damage his Zanpakutō would if it did the damage personally.

Bankai Description:

Bankai:

Akihiko has no actual physical movements required for activating his Bankai, unlike Shikai. Instead, after he calls out his release phrase, a whirlwind of feathers appears over the handle and runs up it, hiding it from view for a moment before transforming it. The handle loses its pommel and steel, instead being replaced by bone. The bottom of the hilt thickens at the end to act as a pommel, and the bare bone handle is long enough for it to be considered a "hand-and-a-half" sword.

The hand guard is now invisible thanks to a large clump of brown fur. From it grows the blade with seemingly no warning. Having a distance of four inches between the edges, this is slightly modified toward the head of the sword, where it extends to six inches and is capped with a sharp hook-like, arching protusion. Midway down the blade, there is a wooden plug fitted into it. From that plug up are several large sections missing from the blade, and the entire top is colored red. Going down from that plug are similar sections missing. The lower half of the blade at the bottom (the same side as the edge) is also colored red.


Bankai Abilities: Bankai Abilities: Akihiko's Bankai does not grant him any new abilities. Instead, it simply grants him a higher precision and control over his shikai skills.

Name of Tech: Tsuisuto
Description of Tech: he same process is used as was in shikai, with the wind and reiatsu being compressed against the blade. However, instead of lengthening the blade's reach, it actually causes the wind to rotate around his sword's blade at high speeds. By releasing this compressed, rotating wind, it rotates on the ground and spins toward the direction the sword was swung. Inside of the tornado, countless blades of reiatsu have been formed from the pressure of the wind on top of it. This provides serious laceration damage to whatever is trapped inside, except for Akihiko, considering it is his own reiatsu and he can dispell it at a whim.

The farther the twister travels, the larger it becomes; however, it also becomes weaker. After 45 feet, the twister will have completely disappated. Within the first fifteen feet, the twister is roughly 8 inches in diameter and six feet tall. It will continue to grow at a rate of doublature for every 15 feet it travels, reaching 32 inches wide and 24 feet tall before disappearing.

Roleplay Sample:

Akihiko stood, with his blade drawn, above the city of Karakura town. How did he do this? Simple. By concentrating his own reiatsu beneath his feet, he is capable of suspending himself as if on a solid structure. In his right hand, the adjoining arm completely extended, the simple hand-and-a-half sword style of Katta's shikai reflected the sunlight off of its silver blade. The red eye that was positioned in the middle of its hand-guard flinted with a crimson hate, despite it not actually seeing. Katta, in question, was pointed directly at Akihiko Hideo's opponent.

An arrancar. In fact, it wasn't just an arrancar. It was an Espada. "What number are you, anyway?" Grinning toward his opponent, who was holding a scythe in similar fashion toward him, Akihiko addressed the espada in a friendly manner. "I suppose I can inform you of what number shall be your end!" Reaching toward his shirt collar, the arrancar pulled down his shirt to reveal a large, black 3 tattooed onto his chest, the top arc of the three spilling from his chest to his neck slightly.

"Good. I'm just making sure I'm not about to kill a wimp." Laughing, the shinigami suddenly used Shunpo. Appearing behind his opponent, as cliche as it was, Akihiko took a brutal slash toward his opponent. Reacting as one of such level would, the espada used his Sonido to get out of the apparent range of his Zanpakutō. "Heh... you can't hurt me with such slow moves." Suddenly, a red line appeared across his back, cutting open flesh and clothing alike.

"Think again. The range of my Zanpakutō isn't what it appears to be, little kitchen knife." Pointing Katta at him again, the jade-eyed Shinigami extended the full length of his sword, rerouting death and sending him to the third's door. "By the way... my name is Akihiko. I feel you should know the name of your color." Closing his eyes with laughter, Akihiko shot forward at high speed, refusing Shunpo as to not alert the Espada of his exact location, instead opting to make him watch.

Slashing with his sword again, the arrancar attempted to block, despite a decent gap between the two. Still, a flurry of sparks rose as the espada's scythe clashed against a translucent wind. "Akihiko, eh... I don't think you have what it takes, kid. But to return the favor, my name is Giro Cobista." Adding some weight to his block, Giro pushed back Akihiko's sword and shot forward himself, slashing his scythe toward the Captain's midsection.

"The problem with long range is a useless close combat front!" Roaring out Akihiko's apparent weakness, the shinigami grinned. Retracting the length of his blade simply by dispelling the wind around it, he shoved it toward Giro's gut. Extending it once more, he penetrated the espada's stomach before he could react. As the arrancar gaped, his momentum suddenly wrenched from its original course and held in place by Katta, as if it were a thumbtack on the universe, the shinigami dispelled the blade once more.

As he started falling, Akihiko began to glow a standard-reiatsu blue color. "Bankai." Suddenly, his sword erupted in a flurry of feathers. When they had cleared, he was no longer holding a hand-and-a-half, european-inspired sword, but something new entirely. However, its appearance wasn't going to be seen for long. Akihiko had no interest of letting it progress to the point that his Bankai could be recorded.

Pointing it at his falling opponent, he extended the blade once more. Catching him with the longer range that his bankai provided, Akihiko suddenly spun his arm around, twirling the espada and throwing him forward. Suddenly, a shunpo. Appearing behind him, Akihiko inhaled deeply. Roaring the name of his attack, he dispelled the wind extending his blade and slashed the air with his bare steel. "Tsuisuto!"

From his blade, a wind began to spin around the entire length of it. Overcoming the blade, this miniature tornado began to whirl through the air toward the espada. Striking him dead on, the tornado engulfed the broken mask, slashing at him from the inside with the reiatsu-blades forged within the wind. When it cleared, nothing remaine. The Arrancar must have died and, henceforth, disappeared as a black dust.

Sheathing his sword, the blade reverted to Sealed Form as it passed through the opening of his scabbard. Turning from the area, he smirked. Beginning a slow walk, Akihiko Hideo was perfectly content with relaxing after the battle instead of rushing back to Soul Society to give a report. Such things could wait until he was refreshed.
